Start by finding out whether the failure affects one page, one browser, or your whole connection. Check the address, reload once, try another known website, and record the exact error. If several sites fail, investigate Wi-Fi, Ethernet, the router, or a sign-in portal. If other sites work, isolate the browser with Incognito, extension-free browsing, another browser, and—when necessary—cleared site data. When a page is visible but buttons do nothing, use the same isolation tests; developers can then inspect click handlers and network requests in DevTools.
Use this order to narrow the fault
A website that will not open and a page whose controls do nothing can look similar, but they often have different causes. A blank error page points toward the address, connection, browser state, security software, or the site itself. A fully rendered page with dead buttons more often involves JavaScript, an extension, stale site data, a blocked request, or a problem in that site’s code.
Work from the least disruptive test to the most disruptive. Do not repeatedly refresh while you are trying to diagnose the problem: repeated requests can hide the original message and make a temporary server or network problem harder to recognize.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm the URL and reload once.
- Open another known website to establish whether the problem is local or site-specific.
- Read and record the exact browser error code.
- Compare a normal window with Incognito or private browsing.
- Compare another browser and, if possible, Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet.
- Reduce tabs and applications, then restart the browser and device.
- Only after those checks, clear the affected site’s data or investigate developer-level behavior.
First check the address and reload
Verify the URL
Look at every part of the address: spelling, punctuation, the domain ending, and any path after the domain. A typo can produce a hostname-resolution error that looks like an outage. If you followed an old bookmark, type the site’s main address manually and navigate from there.

Reload once and capture the result
Use the browser’s reload button once. If the page still fails, write down the complete message and code before trying anything else. Keep the URL, the time, and whether the page was previously working. Those details are useful if you ultimately need to contact the site owner.
Find out whether one site or many sites fail
Open a dependable, unrelated website in a new tab. This single comparison separates the most important branches of the diagnosis.
| Comparison | What you observe | Most useful next area |
|---|---|---|
| One site versus another | Only the original site fails; other sites load | Browser isolation, stored site data, extensions, or a fault at that site |
| One site versus another | Several unrelated sites fail | Device connectivity, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, router, modem, captive-portal sign-in, or security software |
| Normal window versus Incognito/private window | The site works privately but not normally | Extensions, cookies, cache, or other stored browsing state |
| One browser versus another | The site fails in one browser but works in another | That browser’s version, settings, extensions, or profile data |
| Wi-Fi versus wired Ethernet | Wired works while Wi-Fi fails | Wireless signal, network authentication, or router configuration |
| Multiple browsers on the same connection | The site fails everywhere, while other sites work | A site-side outage, maintenance event, or a network path specific to that site |
These comparisons narrow the possibilities; none proves a root cause by itself. For example, a site can fail in several browsers because of an outage, but a local firewall can also affect every browser.

Use the exact error code as a clue
Browser codes describe what happened at one stage of the connection, not necessarily why it happened. Treat them as directions for the next check rather than as a final diagnosis.
| Code | What it indicates | Checks that fit the clue |
|---|---|---|
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED |
The device is not connected to the internet. | Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, reconnect, complete any public-network sign-in, and test another site. |
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED |
The browser could not resolve the hostname to an address. | Recheck the spelling, try the site’s main domain, compare another network, and consider a DNS or site-side problem. |
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT |
The connection took too long to complete. | Check whether other sites work, test another browser or network, and consider congestion, filtering, or an unavailable server. |
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET |
The connection was interrupted or reset. | Look for an unstable connection, an outdated browser, VPN interference, or security software that is interrupting traffic. |
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED |
The destination did not accept the connection, or something blocked it. | Compare another network and browser. If only this site is affected, the site’s server or a network filter may be refusing the connection. |
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE |
No data was sent back to the browser. | Reload once, test another site, and check whether the site may be down or under maintenance. |
The same code can arise from different layers. For instance, a timeout may be caused by the server, a router, a VPN, or a filter between you and the site. Preserve the code and the surrounding text when reporting the issue.
When several websites will not load
Check the active connection
Confirm that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network or that the Ethernet cable is seated at both ends. If the device shows a Wi-Fi connection but no pages open, disconnect and reconnect to the network. On a wired connection, check that the network port or adapter shows a link.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
An Ethernet cable is useful as a diagnostic comparison when the computer has a compatible port or adapter: if the same pages load over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, concentrate on the wireless signal, access point, or router rather than the website. It is a test, not a remedy for a single site’s outage or broken buttons.
Complete a public-network sign-in
Hotels, airports, libraries, and cafés may require a browser sign-in page before allowing normal traffic. Open a new tab and visit a simple, non-sensitive website to trigger the portal. Do not enter passwords or payment details into a page whose address or certificate you cannot verify.
Restart the network equipment safely
If every browser and device on the same network has trouble, restart the modem or router using its normal power procedure, then wait for the connection and Wi-Fi indicators to stabilize. A restart can clear a temporary connection state, but it will not repair a downed website or a defective cable. If only one device is affected, investigate that device before resetting the whole network.
Check filters without removing protection
Firewalls, antivirus web shields, VPNs, and managed-network policies can block or interrupt connections. Review their recent alerts and the allowed-app or blocked-site entries. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a troubleshooting shortcut. If you test a change, make the smallest temporary change permitted by the security product or your administrator, record it, and restore protection immediately after the comparison.
Isolate browser state
Update and restart the browser
Install the browser’s available updates, close all browser windows, and reopen it. Then retry the exact URL. An old browser can interact badly with modern site code, and a clean restart releases memory held by a stalled tab or process.
Compare with Incognito or private browsing
In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito window, then enter the address manually. Private windows generally start without the extensions and stored session state used by a normal window, making the comparison useful even when you do not know which setting is wrong.

If the site works in Incognito, return to a normal window and disable extensions. Turn them off, reload the site, and then re-enable them one at a time, reloading after each change. The extension that makes the failure return is a likely conflict; update, reconfigure, or remove it according to its publisher’s guidance.
Clear only the affected site’s data first
Before clearing anything, understand the trade-off. Removing cookies and site data can sign you out, erase preferences, discard shopping-cart state, or reset a web application. Clear data for the affected site rather than wiping the entire browser profile when the browser provides that choice, then reopen the site and sign in again if required. Clear cached files only when the Incognito and extension tests point toward stale local content or when the site owner specifically asks you to.
Try another browser
Open the same URL in another current browser on the same device. If it works there, the problem is probably confined to the first browser’s profile, extension set, cookies, cache, or settings. If it fails in multiple browsers while unrelated sites work, stop changing browser data and treat a site-side or network-path issue as more likely.
When the page opens but buttons or links do nothing
Start with nontechnical comparisons
- Reload the page once and wait for visible loading indicators to finish.
- Open the page in an Incognito or private window.
- Try the action in another browser.
- Disable extensions in the normal window and test again.
- Check whether every control is affected or only one form, menu, or link.
If controls work in a private window, an extension or stored site state is the leading isolation result. If they work in another browser, focus on the first browser’s profile. If the same controls fail in several browsers but other sites work, the site’s script, API, or service may be malfunctioning. That is an inference from the comparison, not proof of a particular defect.
Distinguish a frozen page from a single broken control
Click another link, select text, or scroll. If the entire tab is frozen, close unused tabs and applications and stop downloads that consume substantial memory or bandwidth. Then reload, restart the browser, and restart the device if necessary. Insufficient available memory can contribute to crashes and loading problems. If the rest of the page responds and only one control fails, resource pressure is less likely than a control-specific script or data problem.
Report a reproducible site problem
When one site’s controls fail in multiple browsers, contact its owner rather than repeatedly deleting your browser data. Describe the exact page, the control you selected, what should have happened, what actually happened, the time, browser and device, whether other sites work, and the shortest repeatable sequence. Do not include passwords, payment details, session cookies, or private account information.

Advanced branch: inspect a failed click with Chrome DevTools
Use this section if you maintain the site or are comfortable inspecting browser developer tools. The labels can vary slightly by Chrome version, and the procedure is not necessary for ordinary browsing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reproduce the action consistently
Open the failing page, note the exact control, and perform the same click with the same inputs. Record whether the page changes, a spinner appears, a dialog opens, or nothing visible happens. Consistent reproduction makes it possible to separate a handler problem from an intermittent network failure.
Check Console and Sources
Open DevTools, inspect the Console for JavaScript errors, and use Sources to examine the code involved in the control. An exception thrown before the click handler completes can leave a button apparently dead. Treat console messages as evidence to interpret in context; a warning unrelated to the interaction is not automatically the cause.
Pause on the click handler
Set a click event-listener breakpoint, then activate the control. If execution pauses, a handler is registered and you can step through it to see where it exits or throws. An extension can register its own click listener, so the debugger may pause in extension code or at a listener you did not expect. Repeat the test in an Incognito window with extensions unavailable to determine whether that changes the pause location.
Inspect the Network panel
Keep DevTools open, reproduce the click, and filter the Network panel for requests associated with the action. If no request is created, investigate the event handler, validation logic, disabled state, or script error. If a request is created, inspect its status, response, timing, and console errors. A successful network response can still be mishandled by the page; a failed or blocked request points toward the server, authentication, policy, or connectivity path.

Reduce resource pressure and interference
Close competing work
Close unused tabs, large web applications, video streams, and unnecessary desktop apps. Pause downloads and retry after the system becomes responsive. If the browser crashes or hangs repeatedly, restart it before reopening all tabs so the test starts with available memory.
Check security and network software methodically
VPN clients, antivirus web inspection, firewalls, parental controls, and corporate filters can alter or block requests. Look for a logged block or policy notice, then ask the network administrator to review it when the device is managed. Never infer that a blocked request is malicious merely because it was blocked; likewise, never bypass a policy on a managed device without authorization.
Choose the next action from the comparison
| Result after testing | Action |
|---|---|
| Several sites fail on one network | Check connection status, captive-portal sign-in, router or modem, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, and security or VPN interference. |
| Only one site fails in every browser | Check the exact error, test another network if available, and contact the site owner if the problem persists. |
| Only one browser fails | Update and restart it, test Incognito, disable extensions, and clear the affected site’s data if the evidence points there. |
| Normal window fails but Incognito works | Disable extensions and re-enable them one at a time; clear affected cookies or site data only after noting the sign-out and state-loss consequences. |
| Page is visible but controls fail everywhere | Report the reproducible behavior to the site owner; developers should inspect the click handler and associated network request. |
| Page or browser freezes | Close tabs and apps, stop downloads, reload, restart the browser, and restart the device if needed. |
What to include when you escalate
Contact the website owner after the page still fails in another browser or the same control remains broken across browsers. Send a compact, actionable report:
- The complete URL, including the path where the failure occurs.
- The date and approximate time, including your time zone when relevant.
- The exact error text or code, copied rather than paraphrased.
- Browser name and version, operating system, and device type.
- Whether unrelated websites load normally.
- Whether the issue occurs in a normal window, Incognito/private browsing, and another browser.
- For a click failure, the control’s label and repeatable steps from page load to failure.
- For a developer report, a redacted console error and the relevant network request status.
This information lets the owner distinguish a site-wide outage from a browser-specific conflict without asking you to repeat basic tests.
Important limits of browser troubleshooting
Chrome’s support steps and menu names are the basis for the user-level sequence above. Firefox, Safari, Edge, and mobile browsers use different labels and may handle private browsing, site-data deletion, extensions, and developer tools differently. The diagnostic logic—compare scope, browser state, and connection—still applies, but do not assume that a Chrome menu path exists on another platform.
An error code, a successful Incognito test, or a working Ethernet connection narrows the field; none alone identifies the underlying owner of the fault. Stop changing settings when the evidence points outside your device, preserve the details, and escalate with the reproducible facts.
