If a Steam Deck game stops at an anti-cheat error, the most likely problem is missing or disabled developer support for Proton—not a setting that you can repair locally. Anti-cheat compatibility is enabled separately for each game. Work through the checks in order: record the exact failure, confirm the Deck compatibility category, install updates, verify the game files, test the Proton build documented by the publisher, and remove launch options or overlays. If the game’s anti-cheat has not been configured for Proton, changing Proton versions cannot create that support; a supported Windows or streaming route, a publisher fix, or waiting for an update are the realistic options.

Why anti-cheat stops a Steam Deck game

Steam Deck runs most Windows games through Proton, a compatibility layer that translates the game’s Windows calls for SteamOS. Anti-cheat middleware is part of the game’s trust and launch process, so it must work correctly through that compatibility layer as well. The game developer or publisher has to enable and configure support for each title. Proton can provide the technical capability, but it cannot add a game’s missing server-side or build-level configuration.

That distinction explains why installing a different Proton release sometimes helps one game and does nothing for another. A newer Proton build may contain a fix for an already-supported anti-cheat implementation. It cannot make an unsupported implementation supported. Treat Proton changes as a controlled diagnostic test, not as a universal anti-cheat repair.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC): Valve says Proton can support it without recompiling the game, but support must be manually enabled for the specific build by the developer.
  • BattlEye: Valve says every BattlEye title requires a manual configuration step. Enabling BattlEye for one game does not enable it for another.

“Proton supports Easy Anti-Cheat without requiring any recompilation, but it does require you to manually enable support for your build.” — Valve, Steamworks documentation, “Steam Hardware and Proton”

Because those actions occur on the developer side, a Deck owner cannot substitute a hidden launch option for the missing configuration.

Start by capturing the exact failure

Do not begin by cycling through random Proton versions. First create a short record of what actually happens. The difference between an anti-cheat service refusing to initialize and a game that never reaches its launcher determines which later checks are useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record these details

  • The complete wording of the anti-cheat or launch error. Photograph the screen if the message disappears quickly.
  • Whether Steam reaches the game’s launcher, reaches a menu, or closes before any game window appears.
  • Whether the failure happens every time or only after several launches.
  • The game version shown by Steam and the SteamOS version installed on the Deck.
  • Whether the problem began immediately after a game update, a SteamOS update, or a Proton change.
  • Any custom launch option, overlay, injected mod, trainer, reshade-style tool, or other compatibility tweak currently enabled.

Keep the original error text while troubleshooting. If a later change makes the game launch, you will know which change mattered instead of losing the evidence.

Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility category

Open the game’s store or library page and check its current Steam Deck category before changing compatibility settings. Valve uses four categories:

Category What Valve’s label means How it affects anti-cheat troubleshooting
Verified The game works out of the box on Deck under Valve’s criteria. Valve’s system-support criterion includes support for all middleware, including anti-cheat, when the game uses Proton. A new game update can still change behavior, so check the game’s recent update history.
Playable The game works but may require manual adjustments. Follow the publisher’s documented settings and expect a compatibility step, but do not assume that a Proton swap can supply missing anti-cheat enablement.
Unsupported The game is currently not functional on Deck. An anti-cheat block is a likely hard limitation. Local tweaks are unlikely to overcome absent developer support.
Unknown Valve has not yet checked the game. Use the game’s own documentation and current reports cautiously; the Unknown label is not proof that anti-cheat works or fails.

The category is a starting signal, not a promise that every build behaves identically forever. Read the publisher’s current Deck or Proton notes and look for a recent game update that mentions anti-cheat, Linux, SteamOS, or Proton.

Install updates before changing compatibility

Anti-cheat runtimes, game files, Proton components, and SteamOS fixes can all arrive through updates. A stale component can produce an error that disappears after a normal update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the Deck to reliable power and Wi-Fi.
  2. In Steam, open Downloads and install every pending game update.
  3. Open the Deck’s system update screen and install any available SteamOS update.
  4. Restart the Deck after the updates finish, even if Steam does not request a restart.
  5. Launch the game once with its normal compatibility setting before making additional changes.

If the failure began immediately after an update, keep the update date in your notes. That timing is valuable when you contact the publisher or Steam Support, and it helps distinguish a newly introduced regression from a long-standing incompatibility.

Verify the game’s files

A damaged or incomplete anti-cheat runtime can stop the game before its main executable opens. Steam’s verification process replaces files that do not match the installed build; it does not enable developer-side support, but it rules out a local installation problem.

  1. Open your Steam Library and select the affected game.
  2. Choose the gear icon, then Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to complete.
  5. Restart the Deck.
  6. Launch the game without adding a new launch option or overlay.

Verification can report that all files are valid and the anti-cheat error can still remain. That result means the local files are consistent with Steam’s copy; it does not prove that the title’s Proton anti-cheat configuration exists.

Test Proton deliberately, not randomly

Use the Proton build named in the publisher’s support instructions whenever one is documented. A title may depend on a particular Proton release or on a fix that has not reached another branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to select a Proton build

  1. Open the game’s Properties from the Steam Library.
  2. Select Compatibility.
  3. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  4. Choose the exact Proton version documented by the publisher.
  5. Close Properties and launch the game once from a clean session.

If no version is documented, you can use Proton Experimental or a community Proton build as a diagnostic comparison. Test one build at a time, record the result, and return to the publisher’s documented version when the test is complete. A community build may alter symptoms, but a changed symptom is not evidence that the developer has enabled anti-cheat support.

Changing Proton is useful when the game already has Proton support and a compatibility regression is suspected. It is not a workaround for an unsupported EAC or BattlEye configuration. If the same anti-cheat message appears across the documented build, Proton Experimental, and a clean launch, stop spending time on version roulette and investigate support status instead.

Remove custom variables and retry from a clean launch

Anti-cheat software can reject an altered launch environment even when the underlying game is supported. Remove variables before drawing a conclusion about compatibility.

Clear launch options

  1. Open the game’s Properties.
  2. On the General tab, find Launch Options.
  3. Delete every custom entry temporarily.
  4. Close the window and launch the game normally.

Disable overlays and injected software

  • Turn off nonessential performance or monitoring overlays for the test.
  • Disable injected mods, trainers, reshade-style tools, and custom DLL replacements.
  • Remove compatibility tweaks that are not part of the publisher’s instructions.
  • Use the game’s standard executable and launcher rather than a third-party shortcut.

Once the game launches cleanly, reintroduce one customization at a time. If the error returns after a particular overlay or mod is restored, leave that component disabled and contact its author rather than changing Proton again.

Apply the correct guidance for EAC and BattlEye

Easy Anti-Cheat

EAC support is a per-build developer decision. Valve’s documentation explicitly says that Proton can run EAC without recompilation, while also requiring the developer to manually enable support for the build. Therefore, an EAC dialog that persists after updates, file verification, a documented Proton test, and a clean launch usually requires publisher action. There is no Deck-side switch that can enable an unconfigured build.

When contacting the publisher, include the exact EAC message, the game build, the Deck category, the Proton version tested, and whether file verification changed anything. Ask specifically whether the current build has EAC support enabled for Proton rather than asking generally whether the game “works on Linux.”

BattlEye

BattlEye also requires a manual configuration step for each title. A different BattlEye game working on the same Deck does not demonstrate that the failing title is configured. Check the publisher’s instructions for the individual game, apply only the documented Proton version or launch setting, and then retest without overlays or injected modifications.

If the publisher confirms that its BattlEye configuration is absent or disabled for Proton, local troubleshooting has reached its limit. The practical choices are a supported Windows installation on the Deck, remote or cloud streaming where available, or waiting for the publisher to add support. Use those options only in ways allowed by the game’s terms and account rules.

Compare the evidence before deciding what to do next

Use this comparison sheet for the specific title. It prevents a generic “anti-cheat does not work” conclusion when one required detail has not been checked.

Evidence to compare Where to check What a useful result looks like
Deck category Steam store or library page Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown, recorded with the date you checked.
Developer anti-cheat enablement Publisher’s current support or Deck documentation A statement that the game’s current build enables EAC or has the required BattlEye configuration for Proton.
Required Proton build Publisher instructions or the game’s support notes An exact Proton release, if one is specified, tested without additional tweaks.
Update status Steam Downloads, SteamOS update screen, and the game’s recent patch notes Game and SteamOS fully updated, with the last update dates recorded.
Supported fallback Publisher’s supported-platform information A permitted Windows installation on Deck or a supported remote/streaming route, if offered.

If the category is Verified but the publisher’s latest notes describe an anti-cheat regression, treat the current update information as the more actionable clue. If the category is Unsupported and the publisher has not announced Proton anti-cheat support, repeated local changes are unlikely to alter the result.

Use the failure pattern to choose the next branch

The game never reaches its launcher

Verify files, clear launch options, disable overlays and injected software, and test the documented Proton version. If the same anti-cheat dialog appears from a clean launch, check whether the developer has enabled the middleware for Proton before trying more builds.

The launcher opens, then the game closes at anti-cheat initialization

Record the exact middleware name and error, then perform the clean-launch test. This pattern is especially important for distinguishing a local overlay or mod conflict from a title whose anti-cheat configuration is missing. Do not infer support from the fact that the launcher itself runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game worked until a game or SteamOS update

Install all pending updates, restart, and test the publisher’s documented Proton version. Note the update that preceded the failure and send that timeline to the publisher and Steam Support. A regression may require a future game, Proton, or SteamOS update rather than a setting change on your Deck.

The game works on another computer but not on Deck

A Windows desktop result does not establish Proton anti-cheat support. The relevant question is whether the developer enabled the middleware for the Deck’s Proton path. Check the title-specific documentation and category, then provide the Deck and Proton details when requesting support.

One Proton build works and another does not

Keep the working build selected and report the difference to the publisher or Steam Support, including both versions. Do not add unrelated launch options simply because the game now launches; first establish a stable, documented configuration.

When local troubleshooting is finished

Escalate after you have a current game and SteamOS installation, verified files, a clean launch, and a documented Proton test. Send the publisher:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact anti-cheat message and a screenshot if possible.
  • The game version, Deck category, SteamOS version, and Proton version.
  • The date the failure began and whether it followed an update.
  • The result of file verification.
  • Confirmation that launch options, overlays, mods, and injected tools were disabled.

Ask whether the current game build has EAC enabled for Proton or has completed the required BattlEye configuration. Also contact Steam Support when the failure appears tied to Steam’s installation, downloads, or compatibility tooling. Support teams can tell you whether the issue is a known regression; they cannot enable a publisher’s missing anti-cheat configuration themselves.

Supported alternatives when Proton support is absent

If the publisher confirms that the game’s anti-cheat is not supported on Proton, use a supported Windows installation on the Deck or a permitted remote/cloud streaming path if either is practical for you. Check the game’s terms and the provider’s rules before using an alternative, because anti-cheat policies can restrict remote or modified environments. Otherwise, the only durable fix is a developer update that enables and maintains support for the title’s current build.

There is no authoritative general percentage for how often Steam Deck anti-cheat failures can be fixed locally. The outcome depends on the specific game, middleware, developer configuration, and current updates, so a title-by-title check is more reliable than a blanket success-rate claim.
