When a standing desk will not move, starts and reverses, or forgets saved heights, begin with the simple causes: outlet power, loose cables, an obstruction, or an overloaded frame. Only after those checks should you initialize the controller. A reset usually teaches the control unit where the desk’s lowest position is; the button sequence is specific to the desk and controller.
Stop immediately for a burning smell, hot power brick or control box, grinding, damaged insulation, spontaneous movement, a leg that moves differently from the others, or an uneven frame that remains after the approved reset. Unplug the desk and contact the manufacturer with the exact model, serial number, displayed code, and steps already attempted.
Start with the symptom, not a replacement part
Use this quick triage to choose the first safe check. Error labels and reset sequences vary by controller, so treat the table as a starting point rather than a universal diagnosis.
| What the desk does | First check | Likely area |
|---|---|---|
| No display or movement | Test the outlet and reseat the power, handset, control-box, and motor/leg cables | Power path, control box, or handset |
| Moves briefly, then reverses | Clear contact points and free tight cables; check that the control box is firmly attached | Anti-collision sensor or cable trigger |
| Stops with an error code | Record the code and controller model before changing settings | Model-specific fault or connection |
| Legs are uneven or one leg does not move | Stop using the desk; inspect for a loose or damaged leg cable | Leg, motor, cable, or control box |
| Desk moves normally but presets are gone | Initialize the desk, then save the heights again | Controller memory or lost calibration |
| Desk starts by itself | Disconnect power immediately | Electrical or control fault requiring support |
Make the desk safe before diagnosing it
Keep the travel area clear while testing. Remove chairs, filing cabinets, wall shelves, CPU holders, and anything stored under or beside the frame. Look above the desktop as well: a shelf, window trim, or cabinet can be an obstruction when the desk rises. Do not push, pull, or force a jammed frame; the motors and lifting columns can be damaged and a forced movement can defeat the desk’s collision protection.

Remove enough equipment from the desktop to rule out an overload. Heavy monitor arms, batteries, printers, and stacked equipment can exceed a frame’s rated load even when the desk still appears stable. If the desk reports an overload, follow the manufacturer’s removal-and-reset procedure rather than repeatedly pressing the direction button.
Keep hands and cables away from moving joints. During initialization, stand where you can release the buttons immediately and do not press other controls unless the manual specifically instructs you to do so.
1. Confirm outlet power and identify the controller
Test the outlet independently
- Unplug the desk and plug a lamp or another known-working device into the same outlet.
- If that device also fails, reset the room’s breaker or use a confirmed working outlet. Do not diagnose the desk until power is restored.
- If the outlet works, reconnect the desk’s power cord or power brick firmly at both ends.
Reseat every connection
With the desk unplugged, check the power input on the control box, the handset cable, and every cable running from the control box to a lifting column or motor. Push each connector fully home; a plug can look connected while its locking tab is only partly engaged. Inspect the cable for crushed sections, pulled strain reliefs, exposed conductors, or a connector that rocks in its socket. Never reconnect a visibly damaged cable.

Record identifying information
Before changing settings, photograph the handset display and write down the desk brand, exact model, controller model if printed, serial number, and any code. The same code can mean different things on different controller families. This information lets support identify the correct reset procedure and replacement part.
2. Remove contact, cable tension, and overloads
A desk that starts and then stops or reverses often has detected resistance. Check the entire frame travel, not just the floor directly beneath it.
- Look for a cabinet, wall, modesty panel, drawer, or cable tray touching the frame.
- Make sure monitor, power, USB, and network cables have enough slack at the highest and lowest positions. A taut cable can pull the desktop or handset and look like a collision.
- Verify that the control box is securely mounted rather than dangling from its cables. Movement of a hanging box can tug a connector and create a false trigger.
- Remove heavy or newly added equipment and retry only after the frame is unloaded enough to exclude an overload.
Collision protection is designed to stop and move the desk in the opposite direction when it meets an obstacle. That behavior is useful, but a cable pressing against the frame or a loose control box can activate it even when no obvious object is present. Clear the path and provide cable slack before attempting a reset.
3. Understand a brief movement followed by reversal
If the desktop moves an inch or two and then backs away, do not keep tapping the button. The usual first suspects are an anti-collision trigger, a tight cable, a control box that is not firmly fixed, or a frame that is carrying too much load. After clearing those conditions, test a short movement in the opposite direction. If both directions reverse immediately, disconnect power and continue with the model-specific initialization instructions.

A reversal that occurs only near one height points to a physical contact at that point in the travel. A reversal at every height, accompanied by a code, points more strongly to a controller, cable, or sensor issue. Do not disable collision protection unless the manufacturer’s manual explicitly provides a safe, temporary procedure.
4. Initialize the desk with the exact model procedure
Initialization, often called a reset or calibration, teaches the controller the desk’s lowest position. It can restore movement and clear lost height references, but it is not a repair for a failed motor, damaged wiring, or a control box that is overheating. The button sequence is not standardized across brands.
Common pattern: hold Down at the bottom
Many controllers require you to hold the Down button while the desk is already at its lowest safe position. Continue holding until the handset display changes or the frame makes a small bounce. Release only when the manual says the sequence is complete. Keep the travel path clear and do not press other buttons during the process.
UPLIFT quick reset
UPLIFT Desk support advises trying its Quick Desk Reset because it often resolves a desk that will not move. Use the sequence in the manual for your specific UPLIFT controller; do not substitute a sequence from another handset generation. Confirm that all cables are secure and that the desk has power before starting.

ASSMANN initialization
ASSMANN describes initialization as a reset of the control unit and recommends trying it first when the desk will not operate correctly. Follow the controls and timing in the instructions supplied with the particular frame and control panel.
Stand Desk procedure
Stand Desk documents a power-cycle and initialization sequence. Power the desk off, reseat the column and control-box cables, reconnect power, and continue holding the specified controls until the desk reaches its lowest height and moves slightly back up. The slight upward movement indicates that the controller has completed its reference routine. Keep your hands clear and stop if the frame binds or remains uneven.
LUMI procedure
LUMI’s documented reset requires unplugging and reinserting the column and control-box cables, then holding Up and Down together. Use the exact LUMI controller instructions for the order and timing; a different LUMI handset or firmware revision may use a different sequence.

If the reset does nothing
Verify once more that the desk is at its true lowest position, the outlet is live, and every connector is seated. If the display remains blank, an error returns immediately, or only one leg responds, stop repeating the reset. Repeated cycles will not correct a failed leg or a damaged control box and can add heat to an already stressed component.

Presets are stored in the controller, not in the tabletop or lifting columns. A reset or controller power loss can erase the saved values, so restore normal movement and complete initialization before programming them again.
Save a preset
- Move the desk to the desired height and wait for the display to stop changing.
- Use the handset’s save command. On the documented Stand Desk sequence, press M, then within five seconds press 1, 2, 3, or 4.
- Test the stored number with a brief press. Keep a hand near the stop control the first time and watch for cable or furniture contact.
Vari states that its control panel can program up to four height settings. That is a capability of the specified Vari panel, not a universal limit for all standing desks. If a number will not register, check for a stuck key, a display or data error, and a loose M1 or M2 connection before replacing the keypad.
6. Read error codes in the context of the controller
Write the complete code exactly as shown, including leading zeroes or letters, and pair it with the manufacturer and controller model. The following examples come from specific systems and must not be generalized to every desk.
| Code or indication | Meaning in the cited system | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Vari E01 or E02 | Leg failure | Stop; inspect the affected leg connection and contact Vari support if it persists |
| Vari E03 | Overload | Remove equipment, clear the frame, and perform the approved reset |
| Vari E04 | Data error | Reseat the handset and control-box connections, then use the model reset |
| Vari E07 or E08 | Loose M1 or M2 connection | Power off, reseat the named connection, and stop if the code returns |
| LUMI memory-read indication | Memory fault indication in LUMI documentation | Record the display and follow LUMI’s reset and support instructions |
| LUMI collision-avoidance indication | Collision-protection event or related fault | Clear contact and cable tension before retrying movement |
Codes can change with firmware, handset type, and frame revision. A code that appears after a successful reset is more useful to support than a code reported without the preceding steps.
7. Isolate the failing part without unsafe swapping
Handset or keypad
A handset is suspect when the display is blank or individual buttons fail while the desk otherwise has power. A stuck key, failed display, or memory-registration problem can prevent presets from saving. Do not assume that a keypad with the same plug will work; its communication protocol and firmware must match the controller.
Control box
The control box is a stronger suspect when it receives power but does not drive either leg, repeatedly reports a data error, or becomes hot. A persistent E08 on a supported UPLIFT system may lead to a replacement control box and, in some cases, one or more legs. Support should make that determination from the model and symptoms.

Cables and connectors
A loose M1 or M2 connection, a pulled handset lead, or insulation damaged where a cable bends can produce intermittent movement or an error that clears temporarily. Replace a damaged cable with the model-approved part; do not splice a motor lead or rely on connector shape alone.
Lifting columns or motors
If one side does not move, the frame becomes uneven, or you hear grinding, stop operating it. Continuing to run a single working column can twist the frame and turn a replaceable component into a larger repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. When to stop troubleshooting and call support
Disconnect power and contact the manufacturer when any of these conditions appears:
- Burning smell, smoke, melted plastic, damaged insulation, or a power brick or control box that is unusually hot.
- Grinding, clicking under load, visible bending, or a leg that remains out of sync.
- Repeated error codes after the approved reset and cable check.
- Movement that starts without a button press.
- An uneven frame that does not correct during the manufacturer’s initialization routine.
- A desk that reverses at every height after all obstructions and cable tension have been removed.
Give support the model, serial number, controller and handset labels, exact code, outlet result, load condition, and a chronological list of checks. A short video of the display and movement can help, but do not keep filming if the desk is overheating or moving by itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Choosing a replacement control box or keypad
Replacement electronics are a last step after diagnosis, not the first response to a desk that will not move. A replacement control box must match the desk model, motor count, voltage, firmware family, and electrical connectors. Connector shape alone does not prove compatibility. The same caution applies to a replacement keypad or control panel: it must communicate with the control box and support the frame’s preset functions.
Ask the manufacturer or an authorized parts channel to confirm the part number against the serial number. If a replacement is approved, photograph the original cable routing before removal, unplug the desk, and test only after all connections are secured and the frame is clear. Cable-management accessories can prevent cords from pulling on the frame, but they cannot cure a failed motor, controller, or damaged cable.

10. Prevent the problem from returning
- Leave slack in every cable through the full sitting-to-standing range and secure cables so they cannot catch a moving joint.
- Keep the control box firmly attached instead of hanging from its wiring.
- Keep the floor and the area above the desktop clear of objects that could become collision points.
- Stay within the frame’s stated load rating, including monitor arms and accessories.
- After moving the desk to a new room or changing its load substantially, check cable routing before operating it.
- Save presets only after a completed initialization and test each stored height while watching the frame.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my standing desk move an inch and reverse?
That pattern usually means collision protection detected resistance. Check for furniture or a shelf touching the frame, tight monitor or power cables, a dangling control box, and excessive load. If the reversal happens at every height or an error appears, stop and use the model’s support procedure.

Will a reset erase my height presets?
It can. Presets live in the controller, and initialization or a controller power interruption may clear them. Re-create the settings only after the desk completes initialization and moves normally.
Can I use another brand’s reset sequence?
No. Hold-button timing and the controls used differ by controller. Use the manual for the exact desk and handset; a sequence that works on one model may do nothing or create a new fault on another.
What does a blank display mean?
First test the outlet and reseat the desk power, handset, and control-box connections. If the outlet works and the display stays blank, the handset, power brick, or control box may have failed. Do not install a generic keypad without model confirmation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why will a preset not save even though the desk moves?
Check that you are using the controller’s save command and timing, then look for a stuck key, display or data error, or a loose M1/M2 connection on systems that use those labels. A replacement keypad is appropriate only after those checks and model verification.
Is it safe to keep trying if one leg is slower?
No. A slower or stationary leg can twist the frame and worsen the fault. Stop, disconnect power, and have the manufacturer identify whether the problem is the leg, motor, cable, or control box.
The Bottom Line
Work from the outside in: verify power, reseat cables, remove obstructions and excess load, then perform the exact model reset. Reprogram presets only after normal movement returns. Persistent codes, heat, noise, uneven legs, damaged wiring, or self-starting movement require the manufacturer—not repeated resets or an unverified replacement part.
