Work from the appliance outward: confirm that the model supports app connectivity and is in its documented pairing mode, check the required Wi‑Fi band and exact network credentials, follow the manufacturer’s phone and app setup instructions, measure signal where the appliance sits, then verify router internet access and the app’s status. If the router or password changed, replace the appliance’s saved network through its model-specific setup flow. Restart or reset Wi‑Fi only as the manual directs.

The sequence below separates credential mistakes, incompatible router settings, weak coverage, pairing errors and cloud/app outages so you do not buy equipment or erase settings unnecessarily.

Start with the exact appliance and its setup method

Write down the brand, full model number and appliance type before changing anything. Connected ovens, refrigerators, washers, microwaves and air conditioners can use different pairing controls even within one product family. Find the model’s manual and the manufacturer’s current companion-app instructions. The app may require a QR-code scan, a permission prompt, a dedicated Wi‑Fi or remote-start mode, or a temporary network created by the appliance.

Do not assume that a setup instruction for one appliance applies to another. Samsung explicitly says that “Network requirements vary between devices” in its SmartThings connection guide. Use that principle throughout troubleshooting: a setting that fixes one model can be unsupported on another.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence

1. Confirm that the appliance is Wi‑Fi capable and ready to pair

Check the specifications and manual for your exact model. Some appliances that look similar have no network radio, while others require a separate connected-appliance option to be enabled. Make sure the appliance is powered, its display is awake and it is not in a cycle or safety state that blocks setup.

Put it into the documented pairing mode before opening the app. Depending on the model, this can mean holding a Wi‑Fi button, selecting a network option in a settings menu, enabling remote start, scanning a code or joining an appliance-generated temporary network. Follow the on-screen timer and prompts; leaving pairing mode and then entering a password will not work. Allow the app’s requested Bluetooth, local-network, camera or location permissions when the manufacturer says they are part of discovery. Do not grant unrelated permissions simply to make a prompt disappear.

2. Check the required Wi‑Fi band and router settings

Look up the model’s network requirements instead of treating 2.4 GHz as a universal rule. For example, Whirlpool’s connected-appliance guidance lists 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n, WPA2 and IPv4 as basic requirements, and its microwave setup page states that “Connection will not work with a 5 gigahertz (GHz) network.” That statement applies to the Whirlpool flow described on its Connect Your Smart Appliance page, not to every appliance. LG’s ThinQ guidance says its appliances use 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi for improved stability; see LG’s setup article, published April 28, 2025.

If your manual requires 2.4 GHz, make that band available on the router and select the appropriate network during setup. Many routers broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name. In that arrangement, the phone may automatically choose 5 GHz while the appliance needs 2.4 GHz. Use the router maker’s instructions to separate the names temporarily or otherwise ensure that the setup follows the appliance’s requirement. Do not change security, encryption or IP settings blindly; use the values listed for the model. Samsung’s support documentation warns that requirements vary, so a different model may support another combination.

Keep the network name visible during initial pairing unless the manual specifically supports a hidden SSID. A guest network, captive-portal network or enterprise authentication can prevent a household appliance from completing registration even when a phone can browse the web.

3. Re-enter the SSID and password exactly

Select the intended home network and type its password again rather than relying on a stale saved value. Check uppercase and lowercase letters, spaces, punctuation and characters that look alike. Confirm that you did not choose a neighbor’s similarly named network or a guest SSID.

If you are unsure of the password, connect another device to the same network using the exact text. Whirlpool explains that its “Unable to Connect” message means the appliance failed to connect to the home router and that an incorrectly entered passphrase or password normally causes that result; its explanation is specific to that support flow. A successful test on another device does not prove that the appliance supports the router’s band or security mode, but it rules out a simple typing error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Keep the setup phone and appliance in the required state

Use the phone, account and app version specified by the manufacturer. During setup, follow the order shown in the manual: some flows have the phone remain on the home network, while others temporarily move the phone to the appliance’s network and then return it to the home network. If the app asks you to switch networks, do so and return to the app without manually improvising a different sequence.

Disable phone features that automatically abandon a network without internet access if they interfere with the temporary appliance network. Reopen the official app, sign in to the correct household or location, and confirm that you are adding the right model. A phone can have internet access while the appliance is still waiting for pairing mode, so do not interpret a functioning phone as proof that setup has completed.

5. Measure signal at the appliance

Check Wi‑Fi where the appliance is installed, not only beside the router. A phone that shows a strong signal in the next room may receive a weak or unstable signal behind a metal appliance, inside cabinetry or through several walls. LG notes that distance and obstacles can weaken the connection, and Samsung suggests a repeater when signal strength is the problem.

For a quick test, move the router or, where safe and practical, temporarily move the appliance closer and repeat pairing. If setup succeeds only in the closer position, coverage is implicated. Improve placement or use a compatible Wi‑Fi extender or repeater after confirming the coverage diagnosis. An extender cannot correct a wrong password, an unsupported band or a failed appliance radio. Position any extender where it still receives a reliable signal from the router; placing it in the dead zone simply repeats a poor connection.

6. Verify that the router itself reaches the internet

Connect a phone or computer to the same home network and open several ordinary websites. If those devices also fail, restore the router’s internet connection before troubleshooting the appliance. Check the router’s status indicators and any outage notice from your internet provider. A local Wi‑Fi network can remain visible while the broadband connection is down, so a visible SSID does not guarantee that cloud registration will finish.

Restart the router only according to the router maker’s normal procedure, allowing it to complete boot-up before trying the appliance again. Avoid changing multiple router settings at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result.

7. Reconfigure after a router, SSID or password change

A replaced router or changed credentials usually leaves the appliance holding the old network information. It will not automatically learn the new password just because your phone has joined the new network.

Open the companion app, select the appliance and look for a network, Wi‑Fi or change-network option. LG ThinQ support directs users with a replaced router to change the product network registered in the app and follow the on-screen Wi‑Fi reset steps; see LG ThinQ Support. Other manufacturers may require a button combination or a menu sequence in the appliance. Use only the instructions for your model, then repeat pairing with the new SSID and password.

8. Distinguish an app “offline” message from a failed Wi‑Fi connection

An appliance can associate with your local router yet appear offline in the app. The local connection may be working while communication with the manufacturer’s cloud service is interrupted, the app session is stale or the account is pointed at a different household.

Refresh the app, sign out and back in only if the manufacturer’s support flow recommends it, and check whether the appliance display shows a connected indicator. Whirlpool’s connected-appliance app troubleshooting guidance notes that an offline status can mean either no Wi‑Fi connection or no interaction with Whirlpool Cloud. If local controls work and the router lists the appliance, repeating the entire pairing process may not address a cloud-side problem.

9. Restart equipment carefully; reset only with model instructions

After correcting a credential, coverage or router issue, close and reopen the app, allow the router to finish restarting and power-cycle the appliance only when its manual permits it. Unplugging an appliance during a heating, cooling, draining or motor cycle can create a safety or service issue.

Do not apply a universal “hold these buttons for 10 seconds” Wi‑Fi reset. Controls differ by model, and a factory reset may erase schedules, preferences, user accounts or other settings. Use the manual’s Wi‑Fi-reset procedure, follow every confirmation prompt and then perform a fresh pairing. If the manufacturer’s documented reset is unavailable, contact its support team rather than guessing.

Credentials: the network is visible but authentication fails

  • Re-enter the SSID and password manually.
  • Test that password on another device.
  • Check that you selected the intended household network, not a guest or similarly named SSID.

Do not buy a range extender for an authentication error. Better coverage leaves an incorrect password incorrect.

  • Note: To use Alexa and Google Home, please note that this product cannot be connected directly. You need to connect the product to the network and the GHome APP first.

Compatibility: the appliance cannot use the router’s configuration

  • Read the model manual for band, security and IP requirements.
  • For a model documented as 2.4 GHz-only, expose or select the router’s 2.4 GHz network.
  • Use the router manufacturer’s help for band-selection or SSID-separation steps.

Whirlpool’s listed 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n, WPA2 and IPv4 requirements are an example, not a universal specification. LG’s 2.4 GHz ThinQ guidance is another model-family-specific example.

Coverage: the signal is inadequate at the installation point

  • Test beside the appliance and compare with a location nearer the router.
  • Reduce distance and obstacles where practical.
  • Consider a compatible repeater or extender only after the closer-location test points to weak coverage.

Configuration: pairing mode or saved-network data is wrong

  • Exit and re-enter the appliance’s documented pairing mode.
  • Follow the app’s QR-code, permission or temporary-network sequence in order.
  • After a router or password change, use the app’s change-network flow or model-specific Wi‑Fi reset.

Service fault: other devices see the network but the appliance does not

If Wi‑Fi is enabled, the network meets the manual’s requirements and a nearby phone can see it, but the appliance never lists it, the appliance radio, firmware or setup state may be at fault. Record the exact message and contact the appliance maker. Samsung’s home-appliance SmartThings troubleshooting guide provides the escalation path for a device that cannot connect.

Common mistakes that prolong the outage

  • Assuming every smart appliance uses 2.4 GHz. Many do, but requirements vary by model; verify before changing the router.
  • Changing several router settings at once. Make one controlled change, test, and record the result.
  • Testing signal only beside the router. The relevant measurement is at the appliance’s installed location.
  • Treating “offline” as proof that Wi‑Fi pairing failed. Check local connectivity and cloud/app status separately.
  • Resetting before recording the current setup. A reset can erase schedules and account associations; use the model’s documented procedure.
  • Using an extender as a universal fix. It addresses coverage, not credentials, incompatible security, unsupported bands or hardware faults.
  • Following instructions for a similar-looking model. Pairing buttons and network requirements can differ within one product line.

When to contact support and what to prepare

Escalate to the appliance manufacturer when the appliance cannot detect a suitable network that other nearby devices can see, when its documented pairing and reset steps fail, or when it repeatedly drops off after a confirmed compatible setup. Contact the router manufacturer or internet provider when multiple devices lose internet access, the router cannot expose the required band or security mode, or you need help changing network settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Have these details ready:

  • Exact appliance model and serial information, if requested.
  • Phone operating system, companion-app name and app version.
  • Router model, network name, security mode and whether the network combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one SSID.
  • The appliance’s location relative to the router and any walls, cabinets or metal surfaces between them.
  • The precise on-screen error, when it appears and whether another device can connect at that location.
  • What changed immediately before the failure, such as a new router, renamed SSID, changed password or internet outage.

Do not share your Wi‑Fi password in a public support forum. If a support agent needs network information, use the manufacturer’s authenticated support channel and provide only what it requests.
