First, copy the transaction hash into a block explorer for the exact Ethereum network you used. The explorer—not the wallet’s “pending” label—will tell you whether the transaction is still waiting, has been confirmed, or was included and failed. A genuinely pending transaction can be left alone, replaced with a higher-fee speed-up, or targeted with a same-nonce cancellation attempt. A confirmed transaction cannot be canceled.
Start with the transaction hash, not the wallet notification
Wallet activity screens can lag behind the network or show a generic pending state after the chain has already produced a result. Locate the transaction hash (also called a transaction ID), then open it in a block explorer that serves the network on which you submitted it. Ethereum mainnet, layer-2 networks and sidechains have separate explorers; a hash opened on the wrong network may appear missing or misleading.
- Copy the complete hash from the wallet’s activity or transaction-details view. Do not use an address, block number or token-transfer identifier in its place.
- Select the exact network used for submission. Check the wallet’s network name and chain details before searching.
- Read the explorer status and receipt. Record whether it says Pending, Success/Confirmed, or Failed, and note the transaction nonce.
- Compare the explorer record with the wallet: sender address, recipient or contract, value, nonce and fee fields should describe the same transaction.

Ethereum.org describes a transaction as stuck when its gas fee is lower than what the network currently requires. That description applies only while the transaction remains unconfirmed. Once a block contains it, the problem is execution outcome—not a queue that can still be canceled.

Ethereum’s fee market changes with demand. For type 2 (EIP-1559) transactions, the base fee is the minimum per-gas amount needed for eligibility for inclusion, while the priority fee is a tip offered to validators. Your max fee per gas is a ceiling: it must be high enough to cover the base fee plus the priority fee if the transaction is to execute at the offered terms.

A fee estimate is a snapshot, not a promise. If demand rises after you sign, a transaction that looked competitive can sit behind newer bids. Conversely, raising a fee when the network is already clearing quickly only increases what you offer without necessarily improving the result. Use the wallet’s current estimate or a reputable, network-specific fee tracker instead of copying an old fixed gwei value. There is no universally sufficient gas price and no guaranteed waiting period after which Ethereum automatically cancels a transaction.
Fee fields to check
- Base fee: set by the protocol for each block and driven by block demand.
- Priority fee: the tip intended to influence inclusion order.
- Max fee: your cap for the total fee per gas; it is not necessarily the amount ultimately paid.
- Gas limit: the maximum units of computation the transaction may use. It is different from the price paid per unit.
A low fee can delay an otherwise valid transaction. A gas limit that is too low can prevent a contract call from completing, producing a failed transaction after inclusion. Changing the fee does not repair a contract call that would revert for another reason.
Check the nonce queue before touching the fee
Every account sends transactions with sequential nonces. The nonce identifies the next transaction in that account’s order: a later nonce cannot be processed while an earlier nonce is still unresolved. This is why a transaction that appears unrelated can remain blocked behind an older one.

- On the explorer, list transactions sent by the same address and sort or inspect them by nonce.
- Find the smallest nonce that is still pending. That is the oldest outstanding transaction.
- Resolve that transaction first. Only then should you attempt to replace a later nonce.
MetaMask’s support guidance specifically recommends resolving the smallest pending nonce before later ones. Attempting to speed up nonce 12 while nonce 11 is still pending may fail or have no useful effect, because the account’s sequence remains blocked.
Choose between waiting, speeding up and attempting cancellation

When waiting is the sensible choice
Leave the transaction alone when the explorer confirms it is pending, the fee is within your budget, and the action is not time-sensitive. A low-fee transaction may be included when demand falls. Avoid repeatedly submitting replacements just because the wallet animation has not changed; each replacement can create a new fee authorization and complicate your nonce history.
How a speed-up works
A speed-up is not a second transaction with a new sequence number. It is a replacement carrying the same nonce and the same intended operation, but with a higher fee bid. Nodes and wallets may require the replacement to exceed the original by a sufficient margin before accepting it. The exact threshold is implementation- and network-dependent, so use the wallet’s offered control rather than guessing a percentage.

- Confirm on the explorer that the original transaction is still Pending and identify its nonce.
- Open the pending transaction in your wallet and choose its speed-up or equivalent replacement control, if offered.
- Review the new max fee and priority fee against your budget and current network estimate.
- Approve the replacement and save its new hash.
- Track the replacement hash on the same network’s explorer. If it confirms, the original operation is the one that took effect; the superseded transaction will not execute separately.
Wallet labels differ. MetaMask’s current post-transaction detail flow for Extension version 13.30 and later covers Ethereum, Linea, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Base and Polygon. Its documentation says that change does not apply to Mobile or Portfolio. Treat those menus as one wallet/version example, not a universal path; other wallets may place speed-up controls elsewhere or use different wording.

How a cancellation attempt works
Cancellation is also a replacement, not a command that reaches backward in time. Wallets commonly construct a zero-ETH transaction from your address back to your own address, using the original nonce and a competitive fee. If validators accept that replacement first, the original operation becomes impossible to execute because its nonce has been consumed.
- Verify the original hash is still Pending on the correct explorer.
- Check that no earlier nonce from the same sender remains pending.
- Use the wallet’s cancel option, if available, and inspect the proposed recipient, value, nonce and fee before signing.
- Approve the replacement and monitor its new hash.
The original and cancellation compete for one nonce. If the original reaches a block first, the cancellation cannot undo it. If the replacement is rejected, underpriced or never propagated, the original may still confirm. Therefore describe cancellation as an attempt, never as a guaranteed reversal.

Do not use a different nonce to replace a stuck transaction
Submitting an ordinary new transaction with another nonce does not replace the pending one. Etherscan’s guidance warns that a different nonce creates an additional transaction. It may itself wait behind the earlier nonce, and it does not cancel or accelerate the original. Replacement requires the same sender and same nonce, plus a fee bid the network will accept as a replacement.
This rule also explains why creating several transactions in quick succession can make recovery harder. If nonce 20 is stuck and you submit 21 and 22, those later transactions remain ordered behind 20. Resolve the oldest pending nonce first.
If the explorer says “failed,” diagnose it separately
A failed transaction was included in a block but did not complete successfully. It is not waiting for a higher fee, and a speed-up or cancellation cannot change its recorded outcome. Open the receipt and inspect the failure information before trying again.

- Gas is still consumed: Ethereum charges for computation performed even when execution fails. Do not assume every fee is refunded.
- Contract conditions may have changed: a swap, mint or other contract call can revert because a deadline passed, a price limit was missed, a balance changed, or a contract rejected the call.
- Gas limit may be insufficient: a contract operation that needs more computation than the supplied limit can fail. Increasing the limit may help only when the underlying call is otherwise valid.
- Retry only after checking inputs: confirm the recipient contract, calldata, token allowance, balance, slippage or deadline settings and current network state as applicable.
The explorer’s receipt is the authority for whether the transaction was included and failed. Do not promise that the transferred amount or all fees will be returned without examining the specific contract and receipt.
A complete recovery procedure
- Record the hash and network. Keep the original hash, sender address and wallet network visible.
- Open the correct explorer. Search the hash and read the status, nonce, block information and fee fields.
- Classify the result. Stop calling it pending if it is Confirmed or Failed.
- Inspect nonce order. Find the smallest pending nonce from the sender before acting on a later transaction.
- Evaluate urgency and cost. Compare the current fee estimate with your budget and decide whether waiting is acceptable.
- Choose one action. Wait, use the wallet’s speed-up replacement, or attempt a same-nonce cancellation. Do not submit a different-nonce transaction as a substitute.
- Track the replacement hash. A wallet may continue showing the old entry until it refreshes; the explorer status of the active hash determines what happened.
- For a failure, inspect before retrying. Correct the transaction or contract inputs rather than merely increasing the fee.
Common symptoms and their causes

Safety rules while troubleshooting
- Never share a seed phrase or private key. Ethereum.org warns that people claiming they can recover a wallet may use that request to steal funds. Legitimate support does not need your secret recovery material.
- Sign only after checking the replacement. Confirm the nonce, recipient, value, max fee and priority fee on the wallet confirmation screen.
- Use official support for interface problems. If a wallet control is missing or an extension behaves unexpectedly, contact that wallet provider through its official channel rather than handing credentials to a stranger.
- Do not trust a fixed “safe” gas price. Fee conditions change by network and time; current estimates are essential.
Preventing future stuck transactions
- Verify the selected network before signing and keep the resulting hash until the receipt is final.
- Use the wallet’s current EIP-1559 estimate, with a max fee that covers the expected base fee and priority fee while remaining within your budget.
- After sending several transactions, monitor nonce order so an old low-fee transaction does not silently block later work.
- For contract interactions, review gas-limit warnings and application parameters; a higher fee cannot correct an invalid call.
- Keep a record of both the original and replacement hashes when using speed-up or cancellation, because the wallet may display both entries during synchronization.
The practical decision is simple: verify the hash and status first, resolve the oldest pending nonce, then choose between waiting, a same-nonce higher-fee replacement, or a same-nonce cancellation attempt. If the receipt says Failed, stop treating it as a queue problem and diagnose the execution error instead.
