If crashes begin immediately after you add or replace memory, start with the RAM installation and its settings—but do not assume the DIMM is defective. Power off, reseat the modules in the motherboard’s recommended slots, confirm the expected capacity in BIOS, load default memory settings, and temporarily disable XMP or EXPO. Then verify motherboard-and-CPU compatibility, test each module and slot separately, and run a memory diagnostic. This sequence distinguishes an unseated module or unstable profile from a bad DIMM, incompatible combination, or fault elsewhere in the platform.

Identify exactly when the crash occurs

Record the failure before changing settings. The point in the startup process narrows the possible causes and gives you a way to compare each test.

Failure before or during POST

A system that powers on but never reaches the firmware screen, repeatedly restarts, emits a memory error code, or shows no display may not be initializing the DIMMs. A module may be in the wrong slot, not fully latched, incompatible with the board, or unable to train at its current settings. If the firmware cannot detect the expected memory, concentrate on physical installation, slot selection, compatibility, and a default-settings reset before troubleshooting Windows.

Freeze or restart while Windows is loading

Windows may begin loading and then hang, restart, or show a blue screen when the memory subsystem is unstable. Write down the stop code and any “What failed” module name. Microsoft explains that stop-code errors can result from hardware, drivers, or software, so a code is evidence to investigate, not proof that RAM is the failed component.

Crash only after Windows has loaded

Delayed crashes can still be memory-related, particularly when a profile applies higher speed or tighter timings after boot. They can also involve a driver, power problem, CPU or motherboard issue, or software. Note whether the crash occurs during a specific workload and whether returning to the old kit changes the behavior.

Before opening the case

  • Shut down Windows completely. Turn off the power supply, unplug the cable, and press the case power button briefly to discharge residual power.
  • Work on a non-carpeted surface and touch the chassis metal before handling a DIMM. Hold memory by its edges; do not touch the contacts.
  • Keep a written record of the original BIOS settings, installed modules, slot positions, and any stop codes. This prevents repeated changes from obscuring the cause.
  • If the machine is stable long enough to copy files, back up important data before extended testing. A failing or unstable system can corrupt data.

Step 1: Reseat the DIMMs in the correct slots

Consult the motherboard manual for the recommended arrangement. On many two-channel boards, a two-module kit belongs in the second slot of each channel rather than in adjacent slots, but the labeling and required positions vary by model.

  1. Remove the side panel and locate the DIMM slots. Open the retaining latches specified by the board manual.
  2. Align the notch in the module with the key in the slot. The notch is offset, so the module should fit in only one orientation.
  3. Press the module vertically downward until the latch or latches lock into place. ASUS’s installation guidance describes this as pushing the memory vertically downward into the socket.
  4. Repeat for every module, then check that both ends are fully engaged and that no latch remains partly open.
  5. Reconnect power and enter BIOS/UEFI. Confirm that the total capacity and the number of installed modules match what you installed.

If BIOS reports less memory than expected, power down and repeat the seating check. A module that is not recognized should not be diagnosed with Windows tools yet; the firmware must first see it.

Step 2: Establish a stable baseline in BIOS

If you can enter BIOS, remove overclocking variables before judging the hardware.

  1. Choose the board’s option to load optimized defaults, setup defaults, or factory defaults. The exact wording differs by manufacturer.
  2. Disable XMP, EXPO, DOCP, or any manually configured memory overclock. These profiles can apply speed, voltage, and timings beyond the platform’s basic standard.
  3. Save and reboot at the default memory speed and timings. Do not change several unrelated settings at the same time.
  4. If an unsuccessful profile prevents startup, use the motherboard manual’s CMOS-clear procedure. The location of the jumper, button, or battery procedure is board-specific; follow that manual rather than guessing.

MemTest86 documents that aggressive timings can produce errors even when a kit is otherwise functional and recommends trying standard timings or another profile. A system that becomes stable at defaults has demonstrated a settings or compatibility problem, but it has not proved that the advertised profile is safe for your particular CPU, board, and module arrangement.

Step 3: Verify motherboard, CPU, and kit compatibility

Check the exact motherboard model and revision, the CPU generation, and the memory kit’s part number. Compatibility is a combination of the memory technology, capacity, module count, supported speed, timings, rank arrangement, firmware, and the CPU’s integrated memory controller.

Item to verify Why it matters Where to check
Memory type DDR generations are not interchangeable, and a module must match the board’s slot type. Motherboard specifications and the kit label
Total capacity and module count Some boards support a capacity only with particular DIMM densities or arrangements. Board manual and CPU/platform specifications
Supported speed and timings The profile speed may exceed the platform’s guaranteed standard. Motherboard memory-support page and CPU specifications
Slot and channel arrangement Using the wrong sockets can prevent dual-channel operation or stop training. Printed slot labels and motherboard manual
Qualified Vendor List (QVL) A listed kit has been validated in a stated board configuration, but inclusion is not a guarantee for every CPU, BIOS, mixed kit, or overclock. Exact-board QVL from the motherboard maker
Firmware version BIOS updates can improve memory compatibility and training behavior. BIOS information screen and the board maker’s support page

Do not combine separate retail kits merely because their labels show the same speed and capacity. Even modules with similar specifications can use different memory chips or subtimings. For diagnosis, use the modules from one matched kit whenever possible, at default settings.

Step 4: Test one module and one approved slot at a time

Isolation is more informative than immediately buying another kit. Use the single-module slot specified by the manual, usually the slot recommended for a one-DIMM configuration.

  1. Power off and remove all but one DIMM.
  2. Install that DIMM in the prescribed single-module slot and boot at default settings.
  3. Run the same diagnostic or workload long enough to reproduce the failure, then record the result.
  4. Repeat with the other DIMM in the same slot.
  5. If both modules pass individually, test the pair in the recommended two-module arrangement. If a problem appears only with both installed, suspect channel loading, a profile, firmware, or platform compatibility rather than automatically blaming one stick.
  6. If needed, repeat a single-module test in another slot to determine whether the symptom follows the module or the slot.
Observed pattern Most useful interpretation
One module fails in multiple known-good slots while the other passes That module is a leading suspect; retest at defaults before returning it.
Either module fails in one slot but passes in another The slot, channel wiring, motherboard, CPU socket contact, or memory controller may be involved.
Each module passes alone, but the pair fails with XMP/EXPO enabled The profile or platform’s ability to sustain those settings is suspect.
Both modules fail in every tested slot at defaults Broaden the investigation to compatibility, board firmware, motherboard, CPU, power, or another component.

MemTest86 cautions that a reported memory error does not always identify a single defective module unambiguously. Electrical or controller problems can make a good DIMM appear to fail, which is why changing one variable at a time matters.

Step 5: Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a built-in test. It is useful when the computer can boot, although a clean run does not rule out every intermittent or profile-specific fault.

  1. Save your work and press Windows + R.
  2. Enter mdsched and press Enter.
  3. Select Restart now and check for problems if you can interrupt the next reboot, or choose the option to schedule the test for the next startup.
  4. The Standard test runs by default. For a more extensive pass, press F1 in the diagnostic screen, select Extended, and press F10 to apply the choice.
  5. Allow the test to complete and let Windows restart.
  6. Read the result notification after sign-in. If it does not appear, open Event Viewer and browse to Windows Logs > System, then find the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry.

An error at default settings is significant, but use the one-module and one-slot comparisons to decide what to replace. A clean Standard run lowers suspicion without proving that a rare, heat-related, or profile-only fault cannot occur.

Step 6: Use an independent bootable test when Windows cannot be trusted

If Windows will not boot, or you want a test outside the operating system, create bootable MemTest86 media on another computer and start the affected PC from it. A USB flash drive is required for this route. Select the USB device from the firmware boot menu, then let the test complete multiple passes. Follow the utility’s current instructions for creating and booting its media.

Test with BIOS defaults first. If errors appear, power down and repeat the controlled module and slot comparisons. If the errors disappear only when XMP or EXPO is disabled, treat that as evidence of an unstable profile or platform limit rather than immediate proof of physical damage.

Step 7: Compare the old and new memory

If the original kit is available, reinstall it using the same slots and default settings. Keep every other variable unchanged.

  • Old kit stable, new kit repeatedly fails at defaults: the new kit is a leading suspect, especially if it also fails in a compatible slot and the capacity is correctly detected.
  • Both kits fail in the same slot or channel: investigate the motherboard, CPU socket contact, memory controller, firmware, power delivery, or another component.
  • Old and new kits both pass alone but fail together: mixed-kit operation, capacity, rank loading, or profile settings may exceed what the platform can sustain.
  • Only a demanding workload crashes: continue testing memory, but also check temperatures, power, drivers, and other recent hardware or software changes.

Repeat a failed test before arranging a return. A loose latch, wrong slot, or still-enabled profile can produce a misleading result.

What to do when the PC still crashes

It crashes after defaults and compatible memory pass

Recheck motherboard firmware, CPU seating, power connectors, cooling, and recent driver or software changes. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance lists hardware, drivers, and software as possible causes, and its basic blue-screen troubleshooting recommends removing newly added hardware. If the machine is stable after removing the new kit, leave the system in that known-good state while you investigate the replacement.

One memory channel remains unreliable

Persistent failure limited to a channel or group of slots points beyond a single DIMM. Inspect the CPU socket for contamination or bent contacts only if you are comfortable doing so and the platform manual permits it; otherwise seek qualified hardware assistance. The board, socket connection, or CPU memory controller can all affect a channel.

BIOS cannot detect any installed memory

Return to the physical checks: correct memory type, fully closed latches, prescribed slot, and CMOS reset. If a known-good compatible module is also invisible in the same slot, the board or CPU path is more suspect than the new kit alone.

Errors appear only with XMP or EXPO

Keep the system at standard settings while checking the QVL, BIOS release notes, and the CPU’s supported memory specifications. You can try a less aggressive profile only after recording the stable baseline. Do not repeatedly change voltage or timing values without a documented recovery path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When replacement or escalation is justified

Consider returning or replacing the kit when one module fails repeatedly across known-good compatible slots at default settings, the expected capacity is correctly installed, and the old kit remains stable under the same test. Contact the motherboard or system manufacturer when known-good compatible memory fails, a channel is dead, BIOS behavior is abnormal, or defaults do not restore stability. Provide the exact board and CPU models, BIOS version, kit part number, slot arrangement, settings, and diagnostic results; that information is more useful than reporting only “it crashes.”

Diagnostic checklist

  • Failure stage, stop code, and “What failed” text recorded.
  • Modules reseated with latches locked and installed in the manual’s recommended slots.
  • Expected capacity confirmed in BIOS.
  • BIOS defaults loaded; XMP, EXPO, DOCP, and manual overclocks disabled.
  • Motherboard, CPU, memory type, capacity, speed, and QVL checked together.
  • Each DIMM tested alone in the prescribed slot, then compared across slots.
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic run with results checked in Event Viewer, or an independent bootable test completed.
  • Old-versus-new comparison performed with the same slots and default settings.
  • Results recorded before any return, BIOS change, or escalation.
