If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II shows a black screen on PC, start with low-risk checks: let shader preloading finish, install available Windows and graphics-driver updates, repair the game through its launcher, and test with overlays and other background utilities closed. No official guidance reviewed identifies one confirmed cause or guaranteed black-screen fix, so work through the checks in order and note what changes.
First, work out whether the problem is the game or the whole PC
Note when the screen goes black: during launch, after reaching a menu, or during a match. Check whether game audio continues and whether the display returns when you exit the game or restart Windows. If the screen remains blank outside MWII, treat that as a broader Windows or display problem rather than assuming the game is the cause.
This triage is a practical way to narrow the issue, not an Activision-provided diagnostic flowchart. Record what you observe, along with your launcher and recent changes, in case you need to contact support.
Try these checks in order

Let shader preloading finish
At first boot, stay on the Main Menu until shader preloading is complete. Activision describes this as important to first boot and warns that navigating away from the Main Menu stops preloading and can lead to performance issues. This does not establish that incomplete shaders cause every black screen, but it is a sensible first check. Activision’s MWII PC troubleshooting guide explains the process.

Update Windows and your graphics driver
Activision recommends current Windows updates and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 for MWII. Check Windows Update, then check your graphics-card maker’s current driver instructions; Activision also maintains a PC video-driver update guide. Follow the instructions for your GPU and avoid treating an older game-specific driver value as current advice.

Repair the installation in your launcher
Use the option for the launcher where you installed the game. A repair checks or replaces game files; it does not prove that damaged files caused the display problem.

- Steam: Open your Library, right-click Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, select Properties, choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Battle.net: Select MWII in the launcher, open the gear icon beside the Play button, then choose Scan and Repair and start the scan.

Test with overlays and background utilities closed
Before launching, close overlays, recording tools, input-remapping utilities, and other nonessential background applications. Activision names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as examples of software that can conflict. Those examples are candidates to test, not confirmed causes of your black screen. If closing one changes the result, relaunch and test one utility at a time to identify a possible conflict. Activision also suggests a clean boot when problems persist.

Check the published PC requirements without buying hardware as a guess
Activision’s system-requirements page, last updated September 1, 2023, gives a published baseline rather than a current hardware-buying guide. It specifies DirectX 12-compatible systems. Its minimum tier lists 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 960 or Radeon RX 470 with 2 GB video memory; the recommended tier lists 12 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 1060, Radeon RX 580, or Intel Arc A770 with 4 GB video memory. Meeting these older published thresholds does not guarantee that MWII will run without a black screen, and buying a listed component is not an established fix. Activision’s MWII Known Issues page was updated February 27, 2026. Its displayed list included PC performance loss but did not identify a PC black-screen issue. Because the list can change, check the live page for current status rather than assuming the displayed entry is still current.

If the problem persists, use Activision’s MWII support hub to find the appropriate contact or reporting route. Include when the screen turns black, whether audio continues, whether Windows remains usable, your launcher, and what you have already tried. Activision’s known-issues guidance asks affected players reporting PC performance loss to provide a DxDiag file; support may also use diagnostic information to investigate other persistent PC problems. A DxDiag report records system details, but it does not itself diagnose the cause.
