First identify which Apple workflow is failing: a Feedback Assistant report, automatic Mac analytics, or a System Diagnostics file you plan to send to Apple Support. They use different prerequisites and produce different local evidence. A SubmitDiagInfo entry in Console can show analytics transmission, but it does not prove that a separate Feedback Assistant report was submitted.
Identify the workflow before troubleshooting
“Diagnostic logs” can mean three different things on a Mac. Choosing the wrong fix can leave you believing a file was sent when it was only created locally, or looking for a Feedback Assistant submission that was never eligible to be made.
| Workflow | What is sent | Who can use it | What confirms progress |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feedback Assistant | A software-feedback report, with diagnostics collected from your answers and any attachments you add | Apple Developers, people enrolled in the current Apple Beta Software Program, and AppleSeed for IT | The report moves from Drafts to Submitted in Feedback Assistant |
| Mac analytics | Consent-based analytics such as crash, freeze, kernel-panic, event, usage, and hardware/software information | Mac users who have enabled analytics sharing | Console may show a SubmitDiagInfo process entry |
| System Diagnostics report | A report assembled from logs already stored on the Mac | Any Mac user who can open Activity Monitor; the saved file can be sent to Apple Support | The report is created and saved locally; saving it is not proof of an upload |
If you are not an Apple Developer and are not enrolled in the current Apple Beta Software Program or AppleSeed for IT, Feedback Assistant is not the general consumer route. Use Apple’s Product Feedback route instead. If Apple Support specifically requested logs, create a System Diagnostics report in Activity Monitor and follow the support case’s upload instructions.

These routes can overlap in time, which is why they are easy to confuse. A report can be sitting in Feedback Assistant’s Drafts while macOS separately generates analytics. Activity Monitor can create a diagnostics archive even when no feedback report exists. Always write down which action you took before interpreting a log entry as proof of delivery.

Fix a Feedback Assistant report that will not submit
1. Confirm account eligibility and the correct app
Feedback Assistant on Mac is intended for Apple Developers and participants in the current Apple Beta Software Program or AppleSeed for IT. Sign-in failure is therefore not necessarily a macOS fault; it may indicate that the account is not entitled to use that service. If you are outside those programs, switch to Product Feedback rather than repeatedly attempting to sign in.
Feedback Assistant is for reporting Apple software issues. It is not a general-purpose upload portal for every Mac log. It may ask for information about the affected Apple software, reproduction steps, and diagnostics associated with that report. If Apple Support asked for a report, use the support channel or a locally generated System Diagnostics report instead.
2. Reopen the draft and check its required fields
- Open Feedback Assistant and select the report in Drafts.
- Verify that the selected topic or team matches the problem you are reporting.
- Review every question in the form. Required unanswered questions are flagged by the app.
- Open Attachments and check that each intended diagnostic, screenshot, or existing file is listed.
- Remove and add an attachment again only when the item is missing, invalid, or clearly incomplete; do not delete useful evidence merely to retry the upload.
- Save the draft, then use the app’s submit control and wait for the report to leave Drafts.
A report that remains in Drafts has not been submitted, regardless of whether its diagnostic files were successfully collected. Keep the draft while troubleshooting instead of starting several near-identical reports; duplicate drafts make it harder to tell which one, if any, was sent.

3. Understand how diagnostics are selected
Feedback Assistant can collect diagnostic files based on the answers you give in the report. The resulting collection is not necessarily created before you complete the form, and it may differ between topics. The Attachments area can also contain device diagnostics, screenshots, or files you select yourself.
Do not assume that an empty-looking attachment area means the app is broken. First complete the questions that determine which diagnostics apply, then inspect Attachments again. Conversely, do not assume that a visible attachment means Apple has received it; receipt is established by the report’s submitted state, not by the existence of a local item.
If a prompt asks whether the issue is a crash, freeze, or another event, answer from what actually happened. The answers can influence which diagnostic files the app requests. Guessing simply to make an attachment appear can produce a report that describes the wrong failure.
4. Complete the information-and-consent screen
Apple’s documented send flow asks you to read information about sending information to Apple and click Accept. If you close, cancel, or bypass that step, describe the report as unfinished rather than sent. Read the notice carefully before accepting because diagnostics can contain details about your Mac, software, and activity.

Consent is a separate checkpoint from choosing files. Selecting an attachment does not substitute for accepting the information notice, and accepting the notice does not demonstrate that an upload completed. Check both the consent action and the resulting report status.
5. Check the report state after sending
After submission, look for the report under the app’s submitted reports rather than relying on a spinner, a disappearing window, or a local log entry. If it still appears in Drafts, record any displayed error and keep the draft intact while you investigate. A preserved draft may contain answers and attachments that would be difficult to reconstruct.
When documenting the attempt, note the approximate time, the exact wording of any alert, and whether the app returned to the form. Those details distinguish an incomplete form from an account or connection problem without requiring you to discard evidence.
When Device Diagnostics is unavailable
The required prerequisites
For a Device Diagnostics attachment, Apple states: “The device must be online, and you must be signed in to your Apple Account on that device.” The selected device must therefore have working internet access and an Apple Account session. A device that is powered off, offline, or signed out may not appear as available.
- Wake the device and confirm that it is connected to the internet.
- Check that the Apple Account is signed in on that device.
- Return to the report’s device-diagnostics attachment step and refresh or reopen the selection.
The account requirement applies to the device being selected, not merely to the Mac on which you are filling out the report. If you are signed in on the reporting Mac but not on the device whose diagnostics you want, the device may still be unavailable.
If the device is absent from the list, Apple’s documented alternative is to continue filling in the form and add the device later, or collect diagnostics manually. Do not treat the missing device list as proof that the Mac has no logs.
Use manual collection when the device cannot be selected
Continue the report with the information you can provide, then create a local System Diagnostics report in Activity Monitor (the procedure below). Keep the generated file unchanged unless Apple Support gives you different instructions. If Feedback Assistant later permits a normal file attachment, attach the saved report there; otherwise provide it through the Apple route associated with your case.

Manual collection is a fallback for obtaining an artifact, not a workaround that proves the original Device Diagnostics request succeeded. Tell support that the file was created locally and explain why the device could not be selected.
Create a Mac System Diagnostics report locally
Activity Monitor can assemble a System Diagnostics report from different logs on the Mac. This is useful when Feedback Assistant cannot collect Device Diagnostics or when Apple Support requests a file. It is a local artifact first; creating or saving it does not establish that Apple received it.
- Open Activity Monitor from the Applications folder or Spotlight.
- Open the System diagnostics options menu.
- Choose System Diagnostics.
- Wait while Activity Monitor gathers the report from the Mac’s logs.
- Save the resulting report in a location you can find again, such as a temporary support folder.
- Send the saved report only through the Apple Support or Feedback Assistant instructions that apply to your case.
The report is assembled from logs available on the Mac at the time you run the command. If the problem is intermittent, record when it occurred before creating the archive so support can relate the contents to the event. Do not repeatedly regenerate it while testing unless asked; each new archive represents a different point in time.
Keep the original file until Apple confirms it is no longer needed. If an upload fails, the saved copy lets you retry without generating a different report and losing the time context of the original problem. Store it privately because diagnostic archives can include identifying device and software information.
What this report can and cannot prove
- It proves that Activity Monitor created a report from logs available on that Mac at that time.
- It does not prove that Feedback Assistant transmitted a report.
- It does not prove that Apple Support downloaded the file.
- It may contain device and software details, so treat it as private support material.
Use Console to check local analytics evidence
Console can show what the Mac recorded locally, including analytics activity. This check applies to automatic Mac analytics, not to confirmation of a separate Feedback Assistant submission.
- Open Console.
- In the Devices section, select the Mac you are investigating.
- Click Start to begin viewing log messages.
- If prompted, provide an administrator name and password to view the messages.
- Open Mac Analytics Data and inspect the process column.
- Look for a row whose Process value is
SubmitDiagInfo.
A SubmitDiagInfo row indicates when analytics information was sent to Apple. It is not a delivery receipt for a Feedback Assistant report, a manually attached file, or a System Diagnostics archive. Keep those workflows separate when documenting what happened.
The absence of a visible row is also not proof that a Feedback Assistant submission failed. It may simply mean you are looking at the analytics category for a manually submitted report, or that the relevant analytics record is no longer retained. Use the report’s own Drafts or Submitted state for Feedback Assistant.

Analytics retention and timing
Apple says a Mac keeps analytics information for one month after it is generated and then deletes it. If you are investigating an older event, the relevant local entry may no longer be available. Capture the date and time of any entry you do find, along with the macOS version and the workflow you were using.
Check connectivity without guessing at a universal fix
For Mac analytics, Apple says transmission uses the Mac’s internet connection. If the Mac is offline, analytics information waits and is sent the next time the Mac connects. Confirm that the Mac has ordinary internet access, reconnect it, and allow time for the next transmission attempt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a Feedback Assistant report, being online is a sensible prerequisite to check, but Apple’s cited instructions do not identify a universal router, DNS, firewall, or VPN repair for every upload failure. Do not present one of those changes as an Apple-verified fix. Avoid changing several network variables at once because doing so makes the eventual cause harder to identify. Instead, record whether the Mac was online, the exact message shown, and whether the report stayed in Drafts.
When a managed Mac is involved, an administrator may control account access, network filtering, or analytics consent. Note that management context for Apple Support rather than assuming that a local log entry can reveal which policy blocked an upload. A successful general web connection does not by itself prove that a particular Apple submission was accepted.
Review privacy before sharing diagnostics
Analytics sharing is consent-based. Apple says analytics may include crash, freeze, and kernel-panic details, event and usage information, and hardware and software specifications. Review the Analytics & Improvements settings in System Settings to see the sharing choice on your Mac.
- Send logs through the Apple workflow that requested them, not through a public forum or paste site.
- Do not publish screenshots that expose account identifiers, device names, file paths, IP addresses, or unrelated log lines.
- Preserve the original archive privately and make a separate copy if you need to redact material for a support conversation.
- Tell Apple Support if the report may contain information from another user or a managed organization.
Do not infer from the presence of sensitive details that a report must be rejected; follow the disclosure notice and the support case instructions. The important distinction is knowing what the archive contains and sharing it only with the intended Apple channel.

- Whether the Mac and any selected device were online.
- Whether the Apple Account was signed in on the device used for Device Diagnostics.
- The route: Feedback Assistant, Mac analytics, or Activity Monitor System Diagnostics.
- Whether the report remains in Drafts, appears under Submitted, or was never created.
- The approximate time of the attempt and whether Console showed a
SubmitDiagInfoentry. - Whether you created and saved a System Diagnostics report, and where it is stored.
This record prevents a common diagnostic error: presenting evidence that the Mac generated or attempted analytics as evidence that a particular feedback report reached Apple. Ask Apple to confirm receipt through the route you actually used.
A practical decision path
- Need to report an Apple software problem? Use Feedback Assistant only if your Apple Developer, Apple Beta Software Program, or AppleSeed for IT status allows it; otherwise use Product Feedback.
- Feedback Assistant report stuck? Open Drafts, complete required questions, inspect Attachments, complete the Accept step, and verify that the report appears as submitted.
- Device Diagnostics missing? Put the device online, sign in to the Apple Account on that device, then try again. If it remains unavailable, continue the form and collect diagnostics manually.
- Apple Support requested a file? Create and save a System Diagnostics report from Activity Monitor and send that saved file through the support instructions.
- Checking automatic analytics? Review Analytics & Improvements and Console’s Mac Analytics Data. Treat
SubmitDiagInfoas analytics evidence only.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Using Feedback Assistant without eligibility. Repeated sign-in attempts will not turn a consumer Apple Account into an eligible developer or beta account.
- Confusing an attachment with a submission. A file listed under Attachments is still part of a draft until the report leaves Drafts.
- Reading analytics as a support receipt.
SubmitDiagInfoidentifies analytics activity, not delivery of a manually prepared archive. - Deleting the only copy. Keep the draft, archive, and any error details until Apple confirms receipt or tells you to remove them.
- Changing unverified network settings at random. Apple does not document one universal router, DNS, firewall, or VPN remedy for this problem.
- Posting raw logs publicly. Diagnostic material can expose hardware, software, usage, account, or organization details.
What to verify before you close the case
You have a reliable endpoint only when it matches the workflow you used. For Feedback Assistant, the report should be visible as submitted. For a System Diagnostics request, you should have the saved archive and confirmation from the Apple Support channel that received it. For analytics, Console’s SubmitDiagInfo entry is evidence of a recorded analytics transmission, while the Analytics & Improvements setting documents consent. None of these states substitutes for another.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Feedback Assistant keep a report in Drafts?
A report remains unfinished if required questions are unanswered, the send information-and-consent step was not accepted, or submission did not complete. Reopen Drafts, check the topic, required answers, and Attachments, accept the information notice, and verify that the report moves to Submitted.
Who is eligible to use Feedback Assistant on a Mac?
Apple Developers and people enrolled in the current Apple Beta Software Program or AppleSeed for IT can use Feedback Assistant on Mac. If you are outside those programs, use Apple’s Product Feedback route instead.
Why is Device Diagnostics not available?
Apple requires the selected device to be online and signed in to an Apple Account. Wake it, confirm its internet connection and account sign-in, then reopen the attachment step. If it remains absent, continue the form and collect diagnostics manually.
Does a SubmitDiagInfo entry prove Apple received my feedback report?
No. The entry in Console’s Mac Analytics Data relates to automatic analytics transmission. It is not a receipt for a Feedback Assistant report, a manually attached file, or a System Diagnostics archive.
How do I create a Mac system diagnostics report for Apple Support?
Open Activity Monitor, open the System diagnostics options menu, choose System Diagnostics, wait for collection to finish, and save the resulting report. Send that saved file only through the Apple Support instructions for your case.
Can I find an old analytics transmission in Console?
Apple says a Mac keeps analytics information for one month after generation and then deletes it. An older event may therefore no longer be present. Record the time and macOS version for any entry you do find.
The Bottom Line
First identify whether you are using Feedback Assistant, automatic Mac analytics, or Activity Monitor’s System Diagnostics. Check eligibility, required answers, consent, and the online Apple Account device prerequisite where applicable. Confirm Feedback Assistant through its Submitted state, use SubmitDiagInfo only as analytics evidence, and keep a saved local report for Apple Support when needed.
