Start with Firefox’s built-in Troubleshoot Mode before reinstalling an extension, changing advanced preferences, or resetting your profile. It temporarily disables extensions and themes and turns off hardware acceleration, so the result narrows the cause without deleting your data. If the symptom disappears, return to normal mode and isolate the extension by selectively disabling add-ons. If it remains, investigate Firefox preferences and broader browser problems instead.
1. Establish exactly what failed
“The extension stopped working” can describe several different faults: the add-on is disabled, its button is missing, a feature works on one website but not another, or an action now produces an error. Define the symptom before changing anything.
- Record whether the failure started after a Firefox update, an extension update, or a change in the website.
- Test more than one website and, where possible, more than one feature of the extension. Note the exact page and action that fails.
- Open Firefox’s Extensions and Themes area and record whether the extension is listed and marked enabled.
- Write down the Firefox version, extension name and version (if shown), operating system, exact error text, and the time the problem began.
- Keep one repeatable test, such as “open this page, click the toolbar button, and perform this action.” Use the same test after every change.
These details distinguish an extension problem from a website restriction, a compatibility issue, or a general Firefox problem. They also make a support request actionable.

Mozilla Support’s Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox guidance (updated September 19, 2025) says this mode temporarily disables extensions and themes, turns off hardware acceleration, and changes some other customizations. Restart Firefox normally to leave the mode; those diagnostic changes are temporary.
“If the problem does not happen in Troubleshoot Mode, the most likely cause is an extension, theme or hardware acceleration.” — Mozilla Support, Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox
That conclusion identifies a group of possible causes, not a particular extension. Because Troubleshoot Mode disables or changes more than add-ons, a disappearing symptom does not prove that the extension you suspected is responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Interpret the Troubleshoot Mode result
If the symptom disappears
At least one of the items disabled or changed by Troubleshoot Mode is involved: an extension, the active theme, hardware acceleration, or another customization. Return to normal mode, then narrow the result to an individual extension rather than guessing.
If the symptom remains
Mozilla’s guidance treats the disabled add-ons, theme, and hardware acceleration as unlikely causes when the same problem continues in Troubleshoot Mode. Move to broader Firefox troubleshooting, including preferences and other browser-level causes, and collect technical details with about:support. Do not repeatedly reinstall the extension as a substitute for this wider diagnosis.
4. Isolate the extension in normal mode
Use selective disabling only after the Troubleshoot Mode test points toward the group of disabled items. This prevents you from changing many settings before you know which class of cause matters.
- Restart Firefox normally.
- Open the Firefox menu, choose Add-ons and themes, and open Extensions.
- Disable the extension you suspect, then run the same repeatable test. If the symptom disappears, you have strong evidence that this extension is involved.
- If the symptom continues, selectively disable other extensions and retest after each change. Re-enable an extension before testing the next one when you need to keep the test focused.
- When one extension changes the result, leave it disabled temporarily while you update and review its configuration.
Keep the theme and hardware-acceleration caveat in mind: if disabling every extension makes no difference, the original Troubleshoot Mode result may have been caused by one of those other changes.

5. Update the extension and restart Firefox
An extension can remain enabled while an outdated build fails against a changed website or Firefox component. Mozilla’s Troubleshoot issues related to add-ons article (updated September 19, 2025) recommends checking for updates and restarting Firefox before further changes.
- Open Add-ons and themes from the Firefox menu.
- In the Add-ons Manager, open the gear menu.
- Choose Check for Updates and install any update offered for the affected extension.
- Restart Firefox.
- Return to the extension’s listing, enable it if necessary, and repeat the original test.
Firefox checks for new add-on versions once a day and also permits a manual check. If the manager offers no update, consult the extension developer’s own site for a compatible release or choose an alternative extension. Do not assume that an enabled status means the installed version is compatible with the current browser.
6. Check the extension’s settings
Many apparent failures are configuration changes rather than damaged installation files. In Add-ons and themes, open the extension’s details or options and inspect settings related to the feature that no longer works. Look for changed domains, disabled rules, keyboard shortcuts, blocked content types, or an option that controls whether the extension runs automatically. Change only one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the same test.
Mozilla specifically lists extension settings as a possible source of altered Firefox behavior. If the extension has its own reset or default-settings control, note the current values before using it so you can restore a deliberate configuration.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7. Review permissions and data access
Open the extension’s Permissions and data section in the Add-ons Manager. Optional permissions may be requested only when an extension first attempts to use additional functionality, so an extension can appear enabled yet lack access required for a particular feature.
- Read the permission request in the context of the feature you are trying to use.
- Grant optional access only when it matches the intended function and your trust in the extension.
- If you previously denied an optional permission, manage it from the extension’s Add-ons Manager entry and retest.
- If a permission concerns website data, expect behavior to differ on pages for which access has not been granted.
Mozilla’s Manage optional permissions for Firefox extensions guidance (updated June 5, 2026) explains that users can manage these optional permissions in Add-ons Manager. Avoid granting broad access merely because it might make troubleshooting easier.
8. Check compatibility after a Firefox update
If the failure began immediately after Firefox updated, inspect the extension’s version and compatibility information in Add-ons Manager. Mozilla explains that Firefox can turn off add-ons when they cannot be updated to a compatible version.

When Firefox disabled the add-on
Look for a notice explaining that the extension is incompatible or was disabled during the update. Install a newer compatible version when one is offered. Mozilla’s Re-enable add-ons that were disabled when updating Firefox article (updated June 16, 2025) recommends checking for a compatible release; if none exists, update Firefox where appropriate, find a compatible extension version, or use an alternative.
When the extension is still enabled
Compatibility can still be partial: the extension may load but fail on a changed browser interface or website. Compare its installed version with the developer’s compatibility information, install any available update, and test again. If the developer has not produced a compatible version, keeping the extension enabled will not restore functions that depend on removed or changed browser capabilities.
9. When it works on some websites but not others
A site-specific pattern points away from a universally broken installation. Firefox can restrict an extension on particular websites, including for security reasons. Mozilla documents this behavior in Why aren’t my add-ons working on some websites? (updated July 9, 2023).
- List the working and failing sites and compare the exact page types, not just the domain names.
- Check the extension’s toolbar panel and Add-ons Manager entry for any indication that access is unavailable on the current site.
- Review the extension’s permissions and settings for website-data access or domain-specific rules.
- Test the same action on a simple page from a different domain to confirm whether the restriction follows the site.
Some pages are protected or use browser surfaces where extensions cannot run. A failure limited to those pages is not evidence that the entire extension is broken.
Do not treat edits in Firefox’s Configuration Editor as a routine fix. Mozilla warns that changing advanced configuration can affect stability, security, and performance. Use documented extension permissions and ordinary Add-ons Manager controls first.

Review general browser changes
Consider recently changed preferences, privacy controls, proxy or network settings, and interface problems that affect the task independently of the extension. Test the browser’s built-in behavior where possible; for example, determine whether the same page or download fails without invoking the add-on.

Use the Troubleshooting Information page
Enter about:support in the address bar. Mozilla’s Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues guide says this page contains installation details and technical data such as installed extensions and modified preferences. Use it to identify unusual settings and to provide accurate information when requesting help.
Consider the startup-cache remedy for interface problems
Mozilla’s general troubleshooting guide describes clearing Firefox’s startup cache for broader user-interface problems and says that this does not change profile data or add-ons. Treat it as a browser-level step, not as a first-line extension repair, and use it only when the symptom is consistent with a startup or interface problem.

12. What to include in a support request
If none of the branches resolves the problem, provide enough information for someone else to reproduce it:
- Firefox version and operating system.
- Extension name, installed version, and whether Firefox marked it enabled or disabled.
- The website URL or page type where the failure occurs, plus a working comparison site if one exists.
- The exact error message and the precise action that triggers it.
- Whether the issue began after a Firefox or extension update.
- The result of the Troubleshoot Mode test.
- Which extensions were selectively disabled and what changed.
- Relevant information from
about:support, including unusual modified preferences.
Remove passwords, authentication tokens, personal URLs, and other private data before sharing diagnostic information. This record separates an extension defect from a compatibility, permission, website-restriction, or Firefox-preference problem and prevents repeated blind resets.
13. Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid
- Changing several variables at once: If you update, reinstall, change permissions, and edit preferences together, you cannot tell which action changed the result. Use one controlled change followed by the same repeatable test.
- Treating “enabled” as proof of health: Enabled only describes the current switch. The extension can still have outdated code, incompatible APIs, missing optional access, or settings that exclude the page.
- Assuming Troubleshoot Mode names the culprit: It disables themes and hardware acceleration as well as extensions. A successful test narrows the class of causes; selective disabling supplies the next level of evidence.
- Testing a different scenario after each change: A website can change its own interface or content. Keep the page, account state, and action as consistent as possible so the comparison is meaningful.
- Granting every permission: Optional access should correspond to the feature you need and your trust in the developer. Broad access is not a harmless diagnostic shortcut.
- Editing the Configuration Editor first: Advanced preference changes can affect security, stability, and performance. Use Add-ons Manager controls and documented browser diagnostics before considering advanced configuration.
- Deleting profile files prematurely: The built-in tests and
about:supportpreserve useful evidence. Destructive cleanup can remove settings needed to identify the cause.
14. A quick, ordered checklist
For a short version, follow this order and stop when the evidence identifies the cause:
- Describe the exact failure, affected sites, Firefox version, extension version, and start date.
- Run Troubleshoot Mode and repeat the same task.
- If the symptom disappears, return to normal mode and disable extensions one at a time; keep the theme and hardware-acceleration caveat in mind.
- For the extension that changes the result, check updates, restart Firefox, and retest.
- Review the extension’s options, domain rules, and optional permissions.
- If Firefox recently updated, verify compatibility and look for a newer release or alternative.
- If only certain websites fail, investigate site-specific restrictions and protected pages.
- If the symptom survives Troubleshoot Mode, inspect Firefox preferences and use
about:support; consider startup-cache guidance only for matching browser-interface symptoms. - Share the test results and sanitized technical details when asking for help.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Firefox extension stop working even though it is enabled?
An enabled switch does not guarantee compatibility or access. The extension may need an update, have changed settings, lack an optional permission, or be restricted on the current website. Run Troubleshoot Mode first, then check updates, options, permissions, and compatibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What does Firefox Troubleshoot Mode actually disable?
It temporarily disables extensions and themes, turns off hardware acceleration, and changes some other customizations. The changes are temporary when you restart Firefox normally. Because several variables change together, a successful test points to a class of causes rather than proving one extension is responsible.

How do I find which extension is causing the problem?
Restart Firefox normally after the diagnostic test, then disable one extension in Add-ons Manager and repeat the same task. Re-enable it before testing another when you need an isolated comparison. The extension whose state changes the symptom is the strongest suspect.
Why does my add-on work on one website but not another?
Firefox can restrict extensions on particular websites, including for security reasons, and some protected pages do not permit normal extension access. Compare working and failing pages, review website-data permissions and domain rules, and test a simple page on another domain.
What should I do if Firefox disabled my add-on after an update?
Open Add-ons Manager and look for a compatible version or update. Firefox may turn off an add-on when it cannot update it to a compatible release. If no compatible version exists, check the developer’s site, update Firefox where appropriate, or choose an alternative extension.
Should I reinstall the extension immediately?
No. Start with Troubleshoot Mode and a controlled test. Reinstalling before identifying whether the cause is an extension, theme, hardware acceleration, permission, website restriction, or Firefox preference can erase useful clues without fixing the underlying problem.
What is the safest way to handle optional permissions?
Open the extension’s Permissions and data section, read what the requested access enables, and grant only access that matches the feature and your trust in the extension. If access was previously denied, manage the optional permission from Add-ons Manager and retest.
What information should I send to Mozilla or the extension developer?
Include the Firefox and operating-system versions, extension name and version, exact error and triggering action, affected and working sites, whether an update preceded the failure, the Troubleshoot Mode result, selective-disabling results, and relevant sanitized details from about:support. Remove passwords, tokens, and private URLs.
The Bottom Line
Use Troubleshoot Mode as an evidence-gathering test, not a cure. If the symptom disappears, isolate the responsible extension, then update it and review its settings and permissions. If it happens only on certain sites, check Firefox’s site restrictions and the extension’s domain access. If it persists in Troubleshoot Mode, investigate Firefox preferences and broader browser issues, and use about:support to provide precise, sanitized details.
