Start with the transaction hash, network, and submitting provider. Query starknet_getTransactionReceipt, then read finality_status and execution_status separately. A transaction that was rejected or never observed needs submission and mempool investigation; a transaction included with execution_status: REVERTED needs execution and account-validation investigation. Do not retry until you know which branch you are in, because a reverted transaction still advances the account nonce and charges a fee for resources consumed before failure.

1. Collect the facts before changing anything

Write down the exact transaction hash, the Starknet network (for example, the specific testnet or mainnet), the wallet or dApp that submitted it, the RPC provider or full node used, the submission timestamp, and the complete error text. Preserve the original capitalization and error code. Provider responses can differ, and a transaction may be visible from one node but not another while it is propagating.

  • Transaction hash: the identifier used for receipt queries and block explorers.
  • Network: a hash is meaningful only in the network where it was submitted.
  • Submitting provider: the node that accepted the JSON-RPC request may have information another provider has not received.
  • Wallet or dApp message: this can reveal whether the failure occurred during signing, account validation, submission, or contract execution.
  • Time: timing helps distinguish propagation delay from a definitive rejection.

Never send a seed phrase, private key, or signing backup to support. A receipt and the non-secret submission details above are sufficient for protocol-level investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Query the receipt first

The first protocol-level check is the JSON-RPC method starknet_getTransactionReceipt. Use the same provider that received the transaction before checking a different endpoint. In a shell, set the endpoint and hash as variables and send the request:

curl -sS -X POST "$RPC_URL"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  --data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"starknet_getTransactionReceipt","params":{"transaction_hash":"'"$TX_HASH"'"},"id":1}'

Replace the shell variables with your own endpoint and hash. If the response contains a receipt, save the complete JSON before interpreting individual fields. If it returns no receipt or a “transaction not found” style error, that does not by itself prove that execution failed: the transaction may have been rejected before inclusion, may not have reached that provider, or may still be propagating.

The official Starknet transaction documentation defines the receipt and status behavior, including changes described for Starknet v0.14.0. Wallet labels and third-party explorers can lag behind the node that actually received the request, so use the receipt from the relevant provider as the primary evidence.

3. Keep finality and execution status separate

A receipt has two independent ideas of status:

  • finality_status: where the transaction is in Starknet’s submission and finality lifecycle, such as whether it has reached an L2 or L1 acceptance stage according to the status vocabulary for your protocol version.
  • execution_status: whether an executed transaction succeeded or reverted.

Do not call a transaction “failed” merely because it has not reached L1 finality. An L2-accepted transaction can be executable and valid while its L1 acceptance is still pending. Conversely, a transaction can be included in a block and still have execution_status set to REVERTED. Read both fields and record the exact values returned by your provider.

Receipt observation What it establishes Investigation branch
No receipt from the submitting provider Inclusion is not yet demonstrated; the request may have been rejected, dropped, or not propagated. Check the original RPC error, nonce, balance, fee limits, validity, and provider mempool view.
Receipt with an execution status of REVERTED The transaction was included and execution reached a failing condition. Inspect receipt fields, account validation, called-contract logic, and state before retrying.
Receipt with execution success but incomplete finality Execution succeeded; the lifecycle has not reached the finality stage shown by the provider. Monitor finality separately from execution and verify the network’s current status rules.
Receipt with both statuses populated The node has protocol-level evidence for lifecycle position and execution outcome. Use the two fields independently in support requests and recovery decisions.

The exact status vocabulary is version-sensitive. For the complete enum and its meaning in the release you are using, consult the transaction reference rather than assuming that a wallet’s “pending” or “failed” label maps to one protocol field.

4. If execution is REVERTED, examine the receipt in detail

A reverted transaction is not an unsubmitted transaction. It was included and ran far enough for the protocol to record an execution outcome. Capture these fields from the receipt:

  • actual_fee: the fee charged for resources consumed up to the failure.
  • Block hash and block number: proof of where the transaction was included.
  • Events and messages: evidence emitted during validation, fee charging, or execution, interpreted with the stage that produced them.
  • Execution resources: resource consumption that can explain a fee-limit or execution-capacity problem.
  • Execution status and any available revert information: the application or account condition that stopped execution, when the provider exposes it.

The protocol reference does not provide one universal mapping from every revert message to a remedy. A message such as an application assertion, authorization failure, invalid parameter, or insufficient resource limit must be interpreted against the contract and account code involved. Preserve the exact message; paraphrasing it can remove the detail needed by the dApp developer.

5. Understand what a revert changed

“Reverted” does not mean that nothing happened. Starknet still accounts for the transaction’s nonce and resources:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The account nonce increases. Do not automatically resubmit an old nonce; first query the account’s current nonce and let the wallet or provider construct the next transaction correctly.
  • A fee is charged for resources consumed before the failure. There is no general promise that a reverted transaction’s fee is refunded.
  • State changes made during the execution stage are reverted.
  • Execution-stage events and L1 messages are reverted along with execution-state changes.
  • Changes made during validation are not treated the same way as execution changes. Events can also originate in validation or fee charging, so an event in a receipt is not proof that the requested contract call completed.

This distinction matters when deciding whether to retry. A retry may require a new nonce, a corrected call argument, a different fee limit, or an account-specific fix. Replaying the same calldata with the same assumptions can consume another fee and produce another revert.

6. Separate account validation from requested execution

For an INVOKE transaction, the account contract’s __validate__ logic decides whether the account approves the transaction. The account’s __execute__ logic then initiates the requested calls. These are separate phases, and account contracts can implement their own validation rules.

A failure therefore does not automatically implicate the target contract. Investigate both sides:

Account-validation checks

  • Was the signature produced for the correct chain and transaction data?
  • Does the account contract accept this transaction version and nonce?
  • Does the account’s validation logic reject the fee, nonce, or calldata format?
  • Is the account funded sufficiently for the fee and any token transfer performed by validation or execution?

Requested-execution checks

  • Are the target contract address, entry point, calldata length, and argument encoding correct?
  • Does the target contract’s current state satisfy its preconditions?
  • Does the call require authorization, an allowance, a particular caller, or a nonzero balance?
  • Did resource consumption exceed the supplied fee limit or another execution constraint?

The Starknet operating-system explanation describes the protocol’s validation and proof semantics in more detail at SNOS documentation. Use the account contract and called-contract source or developer documentation to interpret a revert; there is no protocol-wide error-to-fix dictionary.

7. If there is no receipt, investigate rejection and mempool behavior

Nonce

Confirm that the transaction used the account’s current nonce and that earlier transactions are not blocking it. A future nonce may be held or rejected according to the node’s rules. Query current account state from the same network and provider rather than copying a nonce from a stale wallet screen.

Balance and fee limits

Verify that the account can cover the required fee in the fee-payment token and that the transaction’s fee limits are valid for its type and version. A wallet may estimate a fee successfully and still submit a transaction whose balance or limit is no longer sufficient when the node checks it.

Transaction validity

Check the transaction version, signature, calldata encoding, sender address, and required fields. For DECLARE and DEPLOY_ACCOUNT, also verify the class or account-deployment data expected by that transaction type. Do not apply an INVOKE-specific diagnosis to a declaration or account deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provider visibility

Query the same full node or RPC provider that received the request. A different provider may legitimately return no transaction while propagation is incomplete. If the submitting provider gives a request identifier or error payload, include it when asking for help.

Mempool and replacement rules

Starknet’s documented mempool behavior is release- and configuration-sensitive. The v0.14.0 transaction reference describes sequencers maintaining mempools, constraints on future nonces, replacement transactions, and a transaction time-to-live currently configured to five minutes in that discussion. Treat five minutes as that documented configuration, not as a universal guarantee for every network or future release. Verify the relevant network documentation before concluding that a transaction has expired or that a replacement is allowed.

If you submit a replacement, use the provider’s current rules for matching nonce and fee conditions. Do not send repeated replacements blindly: one may be accepted while another is still shown as pending by a lagging interface.

8. Use transaction type and lifecycle stage to narrow the cause

Transaction type or stage Questions to ask Evidence to collect
INVOKE account validation Did the account’s __validate__ logic approve the signature, nonce, version, and fee? Wallet error, account type, nonce, fee fields, and any validation-related receipt events.
INVOKE execution Did the requested contract call satisfy its authorization, arguments, and state preconditions? Calldata, target entry point, revert information, execution resources, events, and messages.
DECLARE Was the class declaration valid for the declared version and account? Class hash, declaration error, account validation result, and provider response.
DEPLOY_ACCOUNT Did account deployment validation and address derivation match the submitted transaction? Contract class, constructor data, derived address, nonce, signature, and provider error.
Submission or mempool Did the node accept, retain, replace, or expire the transaction before block inclusion? Original RPC response, timestamp, provider identity, nonce, balance, fee limits, and visibility checks.
L2 versus L1 acceptance Is execution complete but finality still progressing? Both status fields, block information, and the network’s current finality rules.

Comparing these axes prevents a propagation problem from being mistaken for a contract bug, and prevents an execution revert from being “fixed” by resubmitting an obsolete nonce.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. A practical decision sequence

  1. Record evidence: save the hash, network, provider, timestamp, wallet message, and full RPC response.
  2. Query the receipt: call starknet_getTransactionReceipt through the submitting provider.
  3. Branch on visibility: if there is no receipt, investigate submission, nonce, balance, fee limits, validity, propagation, replacement, and TTL; if there is a receipt, continue.
  4. Read both statuses: treat finality progress and execution outcome as independent values.
  5. For REVERTED: capture actual fee, block data, events, messages, resources, and revert details; identify whether validation or execution produced the relevant evidence.
  6. Check current account state: confirm the nonce and balance after the transaction, rather than assuming the pre-submit values still apply.
  7. Review the correct transaction phase: inspect account validation for INVOKE approval problems and called-contract behavior for execution problems.
  8. Retry only with a corrected transaction: use a fresh nonce and corrected calldata, fee limits, or account state as appropriate.
  9. Escalate with a complete evidence packet: send the network, hash, exact error, receipt fields, transaction type, and submitting provider to the wallet, dApp, or RPC support channel.

10. Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

  • Calling every pending transaction failed: pending finality is not the same as reverted execution.
  • Checking only an explorer: an explorer can use a different provider or lag behind the submitting node.
  • Retrying the same nonce after a revert: the account nonce has advanced.
  • Assuming a fee is refunded: resources consumed before failure are charged.
  • Blaming the target contract immediately: INVOKE account validation can reject the transaction before requested execution.
  • Ignoring version differences: status, mempool, replacement, and TTL behavior can change between releases and network configurations.
  • Sharing secrets with support: transaction inspection requires the hash and public protocol data, not a seed phrase or private key.

11. What to send when escalating

Support can investigate much faster when the report is reproducible and contains no secrets. Include:

  • Network name and, if relevant, whether it is a testnet or mainnet.
  • Transaction hash and transaction type.
  • Submitting wallet or dApp and the RPC provider or full node.
  • UTC timestamp and the exact wallet/provider error text.
  • Complete receipt, or the complete “not found”/rejection response.
  • finality_status, execution_status, actual_fee, block hash and number, events, messages, and execution resources when available.
  • Current account nonce and balance, checked after the submission.
  • Whether another provider can see the transaction and which protocol version or network release the provider reports.

Do not claim that a transaction is permanently lost until the submitting provider, the network’s documented mempool rules, and an independent visibility check all support that conclusion. If the receipt proves inclusion and reversion, the correct escalation target may be the dApp or contract developer rather than the RPC provider.

The Bottom Line

Use the receipt to decide which problem you actually have: an unobserved or rejected submission, an included transaction with reverted execution, or successful execution still progressing through finality. Then investigate the matching stage—provider and mempool rules for the first, account validation and contract execution for the second, and finality status for the third—while preserving the nonce, fee, and receipt evidence.
