To shrink a Minecraft world with the WorldBorder plugin, define the border, make a verified backup, and run the plugin’s trim operation. The trim command removes generated chunks outside the selected border and its padding; those chunks are permanently deleted, so a backup is not optional.
What WorldBorder trimming actually does
A normal WorldBorder limits where players can travel, but it does not automatically remove terrain that has already been generated. WorldBorder’s trim operation goes further: it scans the named world and deletes chunks beyond the configured border, subject to the padding value.

It does not compress individual chunks, remove entities inside the retained area, or make the remaining terrain smaller. The operation targets terrain outside the effective trim boundary.
Trimming is destructive. Once chunks are deleted, the plugin has no built-in “undo” that restores their original contents. Recovery requires restoring a backup or copying the affected world from another known-good copy.

Prerequisites and safety checks
Use the correct server and world
Run the commands on the server that contains the world you intend to change. A multi-world server may have separate folders for the main world, a Nether world, and an End world. The trim command accepts a world name, so identify the exact name used by your server before starting.
WorldBorder documentation and third-party guides do not establish identical behavior for every current Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper build. No 2026-specific release behavior is established here. Check the plugin’s release notes and the in-game /wb help output before relying on syntax that differs from the examples below.

Make and test a backup
- Stop the server, or follow your hosting panel’s documented live-backup procedure if it supports a consistent snapshot.
- Copy the complete world folder, including the region files and the world’s
level.dat, to storage outside the live server directory. - Record which world was backed up, the date, the border size and center, and the plugin version.
- For important worlds, test that the copy can be opened by a separate server instance before trimming the live copy.
Do not treat a panel’s “backup started” message as proof that a usable backup exists. Confirm that the archive or snapshot completed and contains the world data you would need to restore.
Choose a maintenance window
Trimming scans many region files and can create disk and CPU activity. A live server may remain responsive at a low check rate, but players can still notice pauses while chunks are examined or removed. For a large world, schedule the operation when fewer players are online, and consider stopping the server if your environment cannot tolerate additional load.
WorldBorder trim command and parameters
The documented form is:

Because published defaults conflict, an explicit command is safer than relying on omitted arguments. For example, /wb world trim 20 208 requests a 20-checks-per-second rate and a padding value of 208 for the world named world. Those values are a conservative starting point, not a guarantee that every release interprets them identically.
Step-by-step: trim a world
1. Set the border first
The trim operation uses the border already configured for the target world. In the server console, an example is:

wb world set 5000 0 0This example sets a border with a 5,000-block size centered at X 0, Z 0 for the world named world. Replace the size, center coordinates and world name with values that match your map. Confirm the intended area in-game before deleting anything; a border that is too small cannot be repaired without restoring data.
2. Stop and verify the backup
Complete the backup procedure before issuing the trim command. Keep the backup separate from the live world so that a failed server disk or mistaken deletion does not remove both copies.
3. Start trimming with an explicit rate and padding
From chat or the console, run the syntax shown above with your chosen values. A typical example is:
/wb world trim 20 208If you run the command from in-game chat, you need the leading slash. Console command formatting varies by panel; many consoles accept the same command without the slash.

One guide describes a second command, /wb trim confirm, before deletion begins. The official documentation cited for the command does not establish that this confirmation is universal. If your server reports that confirmation is required, enter the exact confirmation command shown by the plugin. If the command is rejected, use /wb help rather than repeatedly guessing variants.
5. Let the scan finish
Do not restart the server, remove the plugin, or edit region files while a trim is active. Watch the console for progress, warnings and a completion message. Keep sufficient free disk space for temporary work and logging; deleting data still requires the server to read and update region files.

6. Recheck the world after completion
Join the world as an operator and test several locations near the border. Confirm that the border is where intended, that retained terrain loads normally, and that players cannot move outside the permitted area. Compare the world-folder size only after the operation has completed and the server has closed its files cleanly.
7. Refresh DynMap if it is installed
If the server uses DynMap, restart the server after trimming and run a full render. Its stored map tiles can otherwise continue to show terrain that no longer exists in the world files.
Choosing a safe freq value
freq controls how aggressively the plugin checks chunks. A higher value can finish sooner, but it increases the amount of work competing with player activity. A lower value spreads the work over a longer period and is generally gentler on a live server.

The figures above are plugin settings and recommendations, not benchmark results. There is no reliable completion-time estimate without knowing the world’s explored area, storage speed, server hardware and plugin version.
Choosing the pad value
Padding keeps a strip of generated chunks beyond the visible border. Without enough padding, players approaching the border can cause new terrain to generate immediately outside the area you just trimmed. That can reduce the space savings and create repeated trim-and-regenerate cycles.
The official documentation lists 208 as the default padding value. A larger pad preserves more chunks and provides a wider cushion, but it also reduces the amount removed. A smaller pad deletes more data but leaves less protection against new generation near the edge.

- Use the documented default when you have no specific reason to change the buffer.
- Increase the pad when players frequently travel along the border or when movement plugins can approach it closely.
- Reduce it only after confirming how your version measures padding and accepting the increased regeneration risk.
Padding is not a replacement for a correctly sized border. Set the border to the playable area first, then use padding to provide an outer safety margin.
How to keep the border from growing again
Control travel and teleportation
Review teleport commands, portals, random-teleport plugins and administrator tools. A player who is moved outside the intended region may load or generate chunks there even if ordinary walking is blocked.
Watch automated generation
Map renderers, exploration tools and scripted entities can load chunks without a player walking through them. After trimming, check scheduled tasks and map-render settings that might request terrain beyond the border.
Trim only after the map’s shape is stable
If you expect the playable area to expand soon, postpone trimming or retain a larger border and pad. Repeatedly deleting and regenerating the same outer area increases administrative work and can produce different terrain if the seed, generator or version changes.

Troubleshooting common failures
The command says the world is unknown
Check capitalization and spelling, then list the worlds loaded by your server or consult the plugin’s help output. The folder name, display name and internal world name are not always identical. Run the command from the correct world context or specify the exact name explicitly.
The plugin rejects freq or pad
Your installed release may use different argument ordering, names or defaults. Run /wb help, inspect the plugin’s current documentation and test syntax on a disposable copy of the world. Do not substitute values from an unrelated guide simply because the command looks similar.

Nothing appears to happen
Check the console rather than relying on a chat message. The operation may be waiting for confirmation, may be scanning a world with few eligible chunks, or may have been denied by permissions. Verify that the border is set for the same world named in the trim command and that the server account has permission to run WorldBorder commands.
The server lags during trimming
Lower the check rate, pause the operation if your version provides a documented pause or stop command, and remove players from the affected world. If lag continues, stop the server cleanly and restore the backup before trying again with a lower rate or an offline maintenance window. Do not kill the process while it is writing region files unless there is an immediate risk to the machine.
Terrain is missing inside the border
Stop further changes and compare the live world with the backup. An incorrectly sized border, wrong center coordinates or wrong world name can remove the wrong chunks. Restore the verified backup rather than attempting to regenerate the missing area; regeneration may not reproduce player builds or the exact prior terrain state.
DynMap still shows deleted terrain
Restart the server and run DynMap’s full-render operation. The map image cache is separate from the world’s region files, so deleting chunks does not automatically erase every previously rendered tile.
Offline trimming versus trimming while players are online

Choose the method based on the value of uninterrupted access versus the cost of lag and recovery. The plugin’s numeric settings do not predict a universal runtime.
Post-trim validation checklist
- Confirm the intended world border size and center in the affected world.
- Travel to several retained areas, including locations close to the border, and verify that terrain and builds load.
- Test a teleport, portal or other travel system that players commonly use.
- Check the server console for region-file, permission or serialization errors.
- Confirm that your map renderer, if present, has been restarted and fully rendered.
- Record the trim date, world name, border settings, frequency, padding and plugin version with the backup.
Version and compatibility cautions
The available documentation is several years old, and no 2026-specific plugin release notes establish that every command, default or server-platform combination remains unchanged. A third-party claim that the plugin is limited to a particular platform is not independently verified here. Treat Bukkit, Spigot and Paper compatibility as version-dependent: check the release page for your build, read the installed plugin’s help output and test on a copy before touching a production world.
In particular, verify three behaviors in your own installation: whether omitting worldname selects the current world, whether a confirmation command is required, and whether the documented defaults for freq and pad apply. Explicit arguments and a tested backup remove much of the ambiguity.
When trimming is the right solution
Trimming is useful when a world has a large explored perimeter that no longer serves the server and storage usage is a concern. It is less suitable when players still expect to revisit old outposts, when the border will soon expand, or when you cannot maintain a tested backup. In those cases, a border-only restriction leaves existing terrain intact and avoids irreversible deletion.
