To trim a Minecraft world with MCA Selector, stop Minecraft or the server, make a complete backup and a separate working copy, open that copy in the MCA Selector build that matches the save’s Minecraft data version, select only expendable chunks, delete the selection, and test regeneration before replacing the live world. MCA Selector edits Java Edition save data outside the game; it is not an in-game command.
Chunk deletion removes everything saved in those chunks, including terrain, entities, containers, structures and portals. When Minecraft later visits the deleted coordinates, it can generate replacement terrain. Treat the operation as irreversible on the working copy and keep the untouched backup until you have verified the result.
What trimming with MCA Selector actually does
MCA Selector is an external utility for exporting, deleting or editing selected chunks and regions in Minecraft Java Edition saves. It works directly on the world’s save data, so the game does not need to be running and cannot protect you from an incorrect selection. There is no command you can enter in the Minecraft chat to invoke it.
A deleted chunk no longer contains its previously saved blocks and objects. That can include buildings, underground rooms, chests and other containers, mobs and item entities, redstone machinery, farms, rails, roads, portals and temporary supplies. If the location is visited again, Minecraft may create fresh terrain there according to the world seed and the version used to open it. Regeneration is therefore useful for reclaiming explored land before a major update, but it is also a destructive reset of that location.

Minecraft stores each dimension’s terrain separately. Plan and inspect the Overworld, Nether and End as distinct maps rather than assuming that one selection applies to all three.
Safety rules before you edit
Stop every process that can write to the save
Quit Minecraft completely. If the world is hosted on a server, stop the server process and wait until it has finished saving. Do not leave a launcher, backup job, map renderer or other utility writing to the same folder while MCA Selector has it open. Concurrent writes can leave a save in an inconsistent state even when your selection is correct.

- Copy the entire world folder to a separate backup location. Include all files and subfolders, not just the region directory.
- Make a second copy for editing. Open only this working copy in MCA Selector.
- Leave the untouched backup alone until the edited world has been opened, explored and accepted.
The project README states: “MCA Selector modifies and deletes chunks in your Minecraft world. Please make backups of your world before using.” That warning applies even when you intend to remove only empty-looking land.
Confirm that the edition and version match
MCA Selector’s documented scope is Minecraft Java Edition. A Bedrock world is not a suitable input for this workflow. Before opening the save, identify the Minecraft version that last wrote it and select an MCA Selector release whose supported data-version table covers that save.

The supported-version table is the authority for a particular release. If your save falls outside it, the safest choice is to postpone trimming until a compatible build is available rather than guessing.

Download the official MCA Selector build
Use the Querz/mcaselector project repository identified by its maintainers as the official and safe download source. The repository publishes version 2.9 packages for Windows, macOS arm64, macOS x64, Debian and RPM-based Linux systems, plus a universal JAR. Select the package that matches your operating system and follow that package’s normal installation or launch process.
- On Windows, use the published installer or application package.
- On an Apple Silicon Mac, choose the arm64 package; on an Intel Mac, choose x64.
- On Debian- or RPM-based Linux, use the corresponding package format.
- Use the universal JAR when that is the appropriate option for your Java setup.
Do not download a repackaged executable from an unrelated mirror. A current package does not automatically mean that every Minecraft data version is supported, so perform the version check separately.
Open the copy and choose the right dimension
- Launch MCA Selector after Minecraft and any server process are stopped.
- Open the working copy of the world, not the backup and not the live server folder.
- If you are cleaning a dimension-specific area, open the relevant dimension data and treat it as its own map.
- Allow the map to load, then orient yourself using known coordinates, builds and travel routes.
Before selecting anything, write down or otherwise preserve the coordinates of every area that must survive. A map view can make an apparently vacant region look safe even when an underground base, portal link or transport line is present.
Decide which chunks are expendable
Manual map selection
Manual selection is the safest choice around irregular settlements. Draw a boundary around land you have inspected and deliberately exclude the chunks containing valuable work. Leave a generous buffer where a build sits near the edge of your proposed deletion; the visible footprint may not match the chunks that contain its underground rooms, redstone or access paths.
Chunk Filter for repeatable rules
The Chunk Filter feature can identify candidates using repeatable properties, such as lightly inhabited or otherwise expendable chunks. Filtering is useful when a large world needs a consistent first pass, but it is not a substitute for reviewing the resulting selection against your own coordinates. A chunk can satisfy a filter and still contain the only portal, farm, rail junction or storage room in that area.

The MCA Selector wiki documents both Selections and Chunk Filter. It does not publish a universal safe distance or time threshold for deciding that a chunk is disposable, so do not use an arbitrary “older than” or “farther than” rule as your only safeguard.
Protect these areas explicitly
- Your spawn area and every player base, including outbuildings and underground sections.
- Villages or other structures that you rely on for trading, transportation or future projects.
- Farms, storage rooms, smelters and redstone machinery, even when they are not currently running.
- Nether portals and the Overworld, Nether or End routes that connect them.
- Rail lines, ice roads, bridges, paths and other transport links between bases.
- Map-art areas, event builds and temporary staging zones that still contain supplies.
- Chunks adjacent to a protected build when deleting them could remove its access, power or supporting terrain.
Delete the reviewed selection
- Stop and recheck the selection boundary on the map. Compare it with your coordinate list and each dimension’s protected areas.
- Use MCA Selector’s Selection delete command on the working copy.
- Wait for the operation to finish before closing the program or copying files.
- Do not reuse the backup as a shortcut if you discover a mistake; keep it untouched so it remains a recovery point.
Deletion is effectively irreversible for that working copy. The old terrain and saved contents are not held in a recycle bin by the workflow described here. If you selected a base or portal by mistake, close the edited copy, discard it and make a fresh working copy from the untouched backup.
Test terrain regeneration before going live
Open the edited copy in the same Minecraft version used for the compatibility check. Visit several coordinates that were deleted, including locations near the edge of preserved builds. Minecraft should generate replacement terrain when those coordinates are visited again.
- Confirm that the new terrain appears at each test coordinate.
- Walk across deletion borders and look for unexpected seams, abrupt height changes or missing access routes.
- Enter preserved bases and verify that blocks, containers, entities and redstone components remain intact.
- Travel through portals and along rails, roads or ice routes that cross the edited area.
- Check farms, storage and other critical systems after the world has been saved and reopened once.
Generation can make a formerly explored area look new, but it does not reconstruct anything that was deleted. If a border is unacceptable or a protected feature is missing, stop testing that copy and restore from the untouched backup.

When the edited copy passes your checks, stop Minecraft or the server again before deployment. Preserve the original backup, then replace the live world with the verified edited copy using the same folder name and dimension structure expected by your installation. Start the game or server and perform a final check at the main base, spawn and the most important transport links.

Keep the old backup for a meaningful rollback period rather than deleting it immediately. If a player later discovers a missing farm, portal or hidden room, the backup is the only reliable way to recover it.
Repeat the process for the Overworld, Nether and End
Dimension data is separate, so a successful Overworld cleanup does not trim the Nether or End. Make a separate selection plan for each dimension:

- Overworld: protect bases, villages, farms, storage, roads and portals, then remove only inspected expendable areas.
- Nether: preserve every portal approach, tunnel, rail or ice route and the terrain around junctions; a seemingly empty chunk may be part of a fast travel corridor.
- End: protect gateways, farms, platforms and any route used to reach projects or structures. Treat isolated islands and staging areas as valuable until verified.
Use the same stop, backup, selection, deletion and test sequence for each dimension. A backup of one dimension is not a substitute for a backup of the complete world folder.

Trimming is often used to reset old explored terrain so that a newer Minecraft release can generate updated features when players return. The reset works only for chunks you actually delete. Preserved chunks retain their saved terrain and structures, while deleted chunks are eligible for new generation when visited.
Do not open the edited save in a different Minecraft release merely to test it unless that release is the one you intend to use and MCA Selector’s supported data-version table covers the save. The project currently lists 1.21–1.21.11 and development 26.1–26.3+; old snapshots are not guaranteed. Make the compatibility decision before selecting or deleting anything.

Optional scripted maintenance with CLI Mode
The MCA Selector wiki includes a CLI Mode page for administrators who need repeatable or headless cleanup. A scripted workflow can make recurring maintenance consistent, but command-line flags and syntax can change between releases. Read the current CLI documentation that accompanies the installed build, and test the command against a disposable copy before applying it to a valuable world.

Troubleshooting and recovery
The world will not open
Confirm that you selected a Java Edition save, that the folder is a complete world rather than a parent directory containing several saves, and that no Minecraft or server process still has files open. Recheck the MCA Selector supported-version table. If the save is from an unsupported snapshot or development build, work only on a disposable copy and do not promote the result to production.
A dimension appears empty or missing
Check that you opened the intended dimension data rather than assuming the Overworld view represents every map. Close the tool, verify the folder structure against the original backup and reopen the working copy. Never “fix” a missing dimension by editing the backup in place.
Deleted terrain has an unexpected border
Stop exploring that copy and inspect the boundary in a controlled test. A border may be acceptable, but a seam that cuts through a base, road or portal route indicates that the selection was too close to protected content. Restore from the backup, redraw the selection with a wider buffer and test again.
A build or item is gone
Discard the edited copy and restore the untouched backup. Deletion removes saved contents; regeneration cannot recreate a custom build, chest inventory, redstone system or portal arrangement.
The folder is still large
No universal storage-reduction figure is published for MCA Selector. The result depends on how much terrain was removed and how the world’s region files are laid out. Measure the copy after deletion and after Minecraft has saved it, but do not delete the backup just because the size change is smaller than expected.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- Is Minecraft and every server process stopped?
- Do you have a complete untouched copy of the entire world folder?
- Are you editing a second working copy?
- Is this definitely a Java Edition save?
- Does the installed MCA Selector build support the save’s data version?
- Have you recorded protected coordinates for all three dimensions you plan to touch?
- Did you review manual selections or Chunk Filter candidates against bases, farms, portals and transport routes?
- Have you accepted that deletion removes terrain and contents permanently from the working copy?
- Did you test deleted coordinates, borders and preserved infrastructure in the edited copy?
- Is the untouched backup still available before you replace the live save?
If any answer is no, stop before deleting. Trimming is safest when it is treated as a controlled file-editing operation with a rollback copy, not as routine in-game maintenance.
