Your Nintendo Switch save for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can move to the matching Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Choose Nearby-console Save Data Transfer when both consoles are available, Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud when the old save was backed up, or System Transfer when you are replacing the entire console. A nearby transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but both consoles must be online and use users linked to the same Nintendo Account.
What can be transferred
Nintendo supports carrying save data from the Nintendo Switch versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom into their corresponding Nintendo Switch 2 Editions. The destination must be the same game: a Breath of the Wild save goes to the Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and a Tears of the Kingdom save goes to the Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

This is an upgrade path between versions of the same title, not a way to combine Zelda games. A Breath of the Wild adventure will not appear inside Tears of the Kingdom, and transferring a save does not turn the standard Switch release into a Switch 2 Edition.

The transfer is a console feature. A game card, a physical copy, or a Zelda amiibo does not perform the transfer. You need the compatible game available on the Nintendo Switch 2, but the save-data move itself is handled through the system settings or Nintendo Switch Online cloud storage. Nintendo lists amiibo support for the games, but an amiibo is optional and has no role in copying save data.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
What you need
- A Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED/Lite containing the original Zelda save, unless you are restoring from an existing cloud backup.
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with the matching Zelda Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. The physical Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is one example of the compatible destination release.
- A user on each console linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- An internet connection for both consoles when using nearby-console transfer.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an earlier cloud backup when using cloud restoration.
If you are buying a Nintendo Switch 2 system or a physical Zelda edition, those products provide the destination hardware or game, but they do not replace the account and transfer steps below.
Choose the right transfer method
| Method | Old console required? | Nintendo Switch Online required? | What moves | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nearby-console Save Data Transfer | Yes | No | A selected Zelda save | The save is moved from the source console; verify the destination before resetting or selling the source. |
| Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud | No, if a backup already exists | Yes, with an active membership | The Zelda save stored in the cloud | It works only when the save had been backed up. |
| System Transfer | Yes | No membership requirement stated | Compatible digital games, save data, and settings across the system | Nintendo warns that transferred information is deleted from the original console. |
Use nearby transfer if you only want to move one Zelda adventure and both machines are in front of you. Use cloud restoration if the old console is unavailable but the save was backed up. Use System Transfer if the Nintendo Switch 2 is replacing the old console and you want broader system data moved at once.
The deciding questions are simple: Is the old console present? Was the save uploaded to Nintendo Switch Online? Do you want one game moved or a wider set of system information? Must the old console retain its data? Answering those questions prevents choosing a method that cannot work, especially trying cloud restoration without a backup or starting a full transfer when you intended to keep the source system unchanged.

- Update both systems. Install available system updates on the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 before starting. This reduces interruptions caused by mismatched software and ensures the transfer tools are available.
- Connect both consoles to the internet. Nearby-console transfer requires both systems to be online, even though it does not require Nintendo Switch Online membership. Keep the connection active until the transfer confirmation appears.
- Check the account-linked user. On each console, select the user that is linked to the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo restricts save transfers to users linked to the same account; selecting a different user can make the Zelda save unavailable for transfer. Do not assume that two users with similar names are interchangeable.
- Confirm the destination game. Install or insert the matching Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Do not expect a Breath of the Wild save to appear in Tears of the Kingdom, or a save from one edition to appear in the other game.
- Check the source save before beginning. Launch the original game and confirm that the adventure you want is present. If several users play Zelda on the old console, identify the user and title that contain the intended progress before opening the transfer menu.
- Decide whether the original console must retain the save. Treat a nearby transfer as a move rather than a backup. If you may continue playing on the original Nintendo Switch, keep that console and its original save until you have confirmed exactly how you will use the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
- Make room for the destination game. The matching title must be available on Nintendo Switch 2 before you test the result. A transfer can move save data, but it does not supply a missing game license or physical game card.
Method 1: Nearby-console Save Data Transfer
This is the direct method when both consoles are available. Nintendo says Nintendo Switch Online is not required. Both systems must be online, and the source and destination users must be linked to the same Nintendo Account.
Start the transfer on the old Nintendo Switch
- Turn on the original Nintendo Switch and open System Settings.
- Open Data Management, then choose the option for Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose the command indicating that this console will send or transfer save data to another console.
- When the list of games appears, select The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, depending on the save you want to move.
- Confirm the source user and follow the on-screen instructions until the console asks you to prepare the receiving Nintendo Switch 2.
Receive the save on Nintendo Switch 2
- On Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings, go to Data Management, and choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose the command indicating that this console will receive save data from another console.
- Select the same Nintendo Account-linked user used on the old console.
- Keep both systems close, powered on, and connected until the transfer finishes. Select the Zelda title when prompted and accept the transfer.
- Start the matching Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and load the transferred adventure to verify that your progress, equipment, and world state appear correctly.
Work through the send and receive screens as a pair. Starting only one side and leaving the other at the home screen can make it look as though the game is unsupported when the consoles simply are not in matching transfer modes. If the consoles stop communicating, reconnect them to the internet and restart the transfer prompts rather than deleting the source save.
Because this process moves the selected save, do not erase, reset, or sell the original console until the destination copy opens successfully. If the destination does not show the expected progress, stop and resolve the account, game, or transfer issue before making any changes to the source system.
Method 2: Restore from Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud
Cloud restoration is the option for a lost, unavailable, or otherwise inaccessible old console, but only if the Zelda save was backed up before the console became unavailable. Nintendo confirms that both Zelda Nintendo Switch 2 Editions support cloud saves.
Check the requirements
- The old save must already exist in Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud. A membership started after the console disappeared cannot create a backup retroactively.
- The Nintendo Switch 2 user must be linked to the same Nintendo Account that owns the cloud backup.
- Your Nintendo Switch Online membership must still be active while you restore the save.
- The matching Zelda Nintendo Switch 2 Edition must be available on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Cloud storage is useful when the source hardware is gone, but it is not an emergency archive for every unbacked-up save. The cloud copy is the version available to download; any progress made after the last successful backup will not be present in that copy.
Restore the backed-up Zelda save
- Sign in on Nintendo Switch 2 with the Nintendo Account-linked user that created the backup.
- Open the system’s save-data cloud controls from the user or data-management settings.
- Select the Zelda game and choose the command to download or restore its cloud save to the console.
- Wait for the download to complete before launching the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
- Open the game and load the restored adventure. Check the save’s progress before beginning new play.
If the Zelda title does not appear in the cloud list, the account may be wrong, the membership may have expired, or no cloud backup may have been created. Cloud restoration cannot recover a save that was never uploaded. If more than one console has used the account, carefully select the Zelda entry associated with the intended backup rather than assuming the newest console has the newest file.

Method 3: Transfer the whole Nintendo Switch system
Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer process can move compatible digital games, save data, and settings from a Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2. It is broader than moving one Zelda save and is appropriate when the new console is replacing the old one.
When a full transfer makes sense
- You want compatible game data and console settings moved together.
- You are setting up Nintendo Switch 2 as the primary replacement for the old Nintendo Switch.
- You have both consoles available and can leave them connected for the entire process.
- You prefer one guided migration instead of selecting Zelda and other saves individually.
What to do
- Update both consoles and connect them to the internet.
- On the Nintendo Switch 2, open the system-transfer setup and choose the option to receive data from a Nintendo Switch.
- On the original console, open the corresponding transfer option and choose to send data.
- Use the same Nintendo Account-linked user on both systems and follow the prompts to select the data covered by the transfer.
- Allow the process to finish before launching Zelda or disconnecting either console.
- Open the matching Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and verify the transferred save.
A full System Transfer is not a duplicate operation. Nintendo warns that transferred information is deleted from the original console. Make sure the destination is ready and that you no longer need the original copy before confirming a full transfer. If preserving the old console’s Zelda save matters, use nearby-console transfer only after understanding its move behavior, or maintain an eligible cloud backup separately.
The second save slot has a one-way limitation
Both Zelda Nintendo Switch 2 Edition pages advertise two save files. That lets you continue an existing adventure while keeping a separate slot for a new one. The slots do not provide unlimited two-way compatibility.
Nintendo explicitly warns that the second save file created in a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to the original Nintendo Switch version of that game. The warning applies to both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
How to avoid losing round-trip flexibility
- Use the transferred original save as the working file if you might return to the Nintendo Switch version.
- Use the second Nintendo Switch 2 Edition slot for a separate new adventure only when you accept that it cannot go back to the original Switch version.
- Do not assume that moving a second-slot adventure back will work simply because the original save moved forward successfully.
- Explain the limitation to anyone sharing the console so a new game is not started in the slot that needs to remain compatible with the original Switch.
This is a direction-specific restriction. It does not prevent the original Switch save from moving forward to the matching Switch 2 Edition; it prevents a newly created second-slot file on Switch 2 from making the return trip.
Verify the transfer before changing anything
Verification is especially important after a nearby transfer or a full System Transfer because those processes move data away from the source console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Launch the correct Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, not the other Zelda title.
- Select the transferred save and confirm that the expected number of hearts, equipment, quests, map progress, and recent location are present.
- Load into the world and make sure the game saves normally on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Quit and reopen the game once to confirm that the progress persists after a normal save cycle.
- Only after this check should you reset, trade in, or sell the original Nintendo Switch.
Troubleshooting transfer problems
The transfer option cannot find the Zelda save
- Check that you selected the user linked to the same Nintendo Account on both consoles.
- Confirm that the old console contains the save locally if you are using nearby transfer.
- Confirm that you selected the matching game title and not the other Zelda game.
- Update both systems, reconnect them to the internet, and restart the transfer process.
- Check that the game has actually been launched under the user whose save you intend to move.
The old console is gone and no cloud save appears
Cloud restoration requires an existing backup and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If the save was never backed up, Nintendo’s cloud method cannot recreate it on Nintendo Switch 2. A full System Transfer also cannot be started without the original console because it is designed to move data between the two systems.
The game opens but shows the wrong progress
- Check the Nintendo Account-linked user on Nintendo Switch 2; another user can have a separate save location.
- Check whether you selected the correct Zelda title and edition.
- If you restored from the cloud, confirm that the downloaded file is the intended backup rather than a newer or older cloud state.
- Do not create a new second-slot adventure until you have located and verified the original transferred save.
You want to keep playing on the old Switch
Nearby Save Data Transfer is intended to move the save, not maintain two independent working copies. Keep the original console untouched until you have decided which system will hold your active adventure. If you need a second adventure on Nintendo Switch 2, use its second save slot only with the one-way limitation in mind.
You bought a physical edition but nothing transferred automatically
That is expected. The physical copy supplies the game, while the save remains associated with the console user and transfer service. Insert or install the matching edition, then perform Nearby-console Save Data Transfer, cloud restoration, or System Transfer as appropriate. Swapping game cards or scanning an amiibo does not copy progress.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my Breath of the Wild save to the Switch 2 Edition?
Yes. Nintendo supports moving the Nintendo Switch version save to the matching Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Use Nearby-console Save Data Transfer, Nintendo Switch Online cloud restoration, or a full System Transfer.
Can I transfer my Tears of the Kingdom save to the new game?
Yes. A Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch save can move to the matching Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It cannot move into Breath of the Wild.
What if I no longer have my old Switch?
Use Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud only if the Zelda save was backed up before the old console became unavailable and the membership is active. Without an existing backup, the cloud method cannot recreate the save.
Do both consoles need Nintendo Switch Online for a direct transfer?
No. Nearby-console Save Data Transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online membership. Both consoles do need an internet connection, and their users must be linked to the same Nintendo Account.
Will a full System Transfer leave my old console’s save intact?
No. Nintendo warns that transferred information is deleted from the original console. Verify the Nintendo Switch 2 copy before resetting or disposing of the old system.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can the second save slot on Switch 2 go back to the original Switch game?
No. Nintendo states that the second save file created in either Zelda Nintendo Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to that game’s original Nintendo Switch version.
Does buying the physical Zelda Switch 2 Edition transfer my save?
No. The physical game provides access to the title, but the save move is performed through console transfer or Nintendo Switch Online cloud controls.
The Bottom Line
For one Zelda adventure, use Nearby-console Save Data Transfer when both systems are available: keep the same Nintendo Account-linked user on both consoles, put both online, and verify the destination before touching the old system. If the old console is gone, cloud restoration works only from an existing Nintendo Switch Online backup with an active membership. Choose full System Transfer for a broader migration, remembering that Nintendo says transferred information is deleted from the original console. Finally, reserve the Switch 2 Edition’s second save slot for a new adventure only if you accept that it cannot return to the original Switch version.
