Yes. Reverie in the Moonlight is officially supported on Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo’s nearby save-data transfer moves the existing save from an old Switch to the new console. You need both consoles, internet access, nearby placement, and the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user on each system. Nintendo Switch Online is not required for this direct transfer.

Start the transfer on the old console at System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console. On Switch 2, choose System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Receive Save Data. The operation moves the save rather than copying it: after a successful send, Nintendo deletes that save from the source console, and choosing to overwrite an existing target save also permanently removes the target file.

What you need before moving the save

The game’s Nintendo listing identifies Reverie in the Moonlight as supported on Nintendo Switch 2, with game behavior described as consistent with the Nintendo Switch version. The listing estimates the game’s download size at 550 MB on each platform. That compatibility status means the Switch save can be used on Switch 2; it does not require a separate, incompatible progression track.

Both consoles and a working internet connection

Nearby transfer uses communication between the source and target consoles. Keep the original Switch and Switch 2 close together, power them on, and connect both to the internet before opening the transfer menus. Nintendo’s procedure is designed for two consoles that are available at the same time.

The same Nintendo Account on the matching user

Create or select the user on Switch 2 that is linked to the same Nintendo Account as the user who owns the save on the old Switch. Nintendo restricts save-data transfers to users linked to the same account. If the account relationship is different, the game may be installed on both systems yet the save will not be eligible for this transfer.

Current system software

Update both consoles first. On each system, open System Settings > System > System Update and install any available update. Updating before the transfer avoids a menu or compatibility mismatch caused by one console running older system software.

Enough storage for the game on Switch 2

The game listing gives an estimated 550 MB file size for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Make sure the game is installed or otherwise available on Switch 2 after the save arrives. Save data itself is separate from the game application, so transferring the save does not by itself install the game.

Nearby transfer after Switch 2 setup

Use this route when Switch 2 has already completed its initial setup and both consoles are still in your possession. It transfers the selected user’s save for the selected title rather than performing a full console migration.

  1. Update both systems. On each console, go to System Settings > System > System Update, then complete any update and restart if requested.
  2. Place the consoles near each other and connect them to the internet. Keep both systems awake and close enough for the local transfer process to remain connected.
  3. Verify the user account. On both consoles, select the user linked to the same Nintendo Account. The user on the old Switch must be the one that created or used the Reverie in the Moonlight save.
  4. Open the send menu on the old Switch. Choose System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console.
  5. Select the source user and game. Choose the relevant user, select the Reverie in the Moonlight save file, choose Next, and then select OK when the console asks you to confirm.
  6. Open the receive menu on Switch 2. On the new console, go to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Receive Save Data.
  7. Handle an existing target save carefully. If Switch 2 already has a Reverie in the Moonlight save, the receive process will require you to cancel or approve an overwrite. Keep the existing file only if it is the one you intend to discard; Nintendo warns that deleted or overwritten save data cannot be recovered.
  8. Wait for completion on both systems. Do not close the settings screens or power off either console while the transfer is in progress. When both consoles report completion, launch the game on Switch 2 and select the transferred user.

What the transfer changes on the two consoles

The old Switch no longer retains the sent file

Nintendo describes this feature explicitly: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” Treat the operation as a move. If you want to continue playing on the original Switch, do not use nearby transfer as a way to keep two independent versions of the same progress.

An existing Switch 2 file can be replaced

The receive process can replace a save already present on Switch 2. Nintendo’s warning covers both sides of the operation: the sent file disappears from the source, and a target file selected for overwrite is deleted. There is no recovery step in the transfer tool for either deletion, so stop and cancel if you are unsure which file is newer or more valuable.

The game remains the same supported software

Nintendo lists Switch 2 compatibility as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” The compatibility statement concerns the game’s operation on the new hardware; it does not promise that two consoles can maintain synchronized saves after a move.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?

No membership is required for the nearby, console-to-console procedure. Nintendo Support states: “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use this feature.” Internet access is still required for the transfer conditions described above, but that requirement is different from paying for Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo Switch Online matters for the separate Save Data Cloud feature. The game listing identifies Save Data Cloud support through Nintendo Switch Online, so a member can use the cloud as a backup and as an alternative way to obtain supported save data on another console. Cloud storage is not what powers the nearby send-and-receive screens.

Nearby transfer versus Save Data Cloud

Choose the method based on whether both consoles are available and whether you need to preserve a backup copy.

Consideration Nearby save-data transfer Save Data Cloud
Both consoles available at once Yes. The old Switch and Switch 2 communicate during the operation. Not necessarily. The source can upload before the target is available.
Nintendo Switch Online Not required for this feature. Required for the game’s Save Data Cloud service.
What happens to the source file The selected source save is moved and removed from the old console after a successful send. The cloud copy can serve as a backup; the cloud workflow is separate from the nearby move.
Best use case A direct move when you have both systems beside you. Changing consoles when the old system will be unavailable, or restoring a supported backup.
Timing Available after Switch 2 setup through Data Management. Upload and download are performed through Nintendo’s cloud-save controls for supported software.

Because cloud support is listed for this title, a Nintendo Switch Online member can use that route when a direct local transfer is impractical. Verify that the latest progress has been uploaded from the old Switch before relying on the cloud copy; progress made after the last upload will not be represented by that earlier backup.

If Switch 2 has not finished initial setup

Nintendo also provides a broader System Transfer during Switch 2’s initial setup. This route can move save data together with settings and other console information by local communication. It is appropriate when Switch 2 is still being configured and you want to migrate more than one game’s save.

Use System Transfer for a whole-console move

Follow the transfer choices shown during Switch 2’s first-time setup and keep the original Switch nearby. The setup flow is different from the post-setup Send Save Data to Another Console menu, because it is intended to migrate broader user and system information. Select the original Switch as the source when prompted, then allow the process to finish before starting games on the new console.

Use Nintendo’s temporary server-upload path when the old Switch is leaving

Nintendo documents a temporary server-upload option for owners who will give up, sell, or otherwise lose access to the old Switch before receiving the data on Switch 2. In that situation, upload the eligible data from the old console using Nintendo’s transfer instructions, then retrieve it on Switch 2 during setup. This is a contingency for separated consoles, not a reason to choose the cloud-save feature for every title: the temporary server process and Save Data Cloud are separate Nintendo transfer mechanisms.

Does the Switch 2 Edition use your existing save?

Nintendo’s Reverie in the Moonlight Nintendo Switch 2 Edition listing says the edition has no differences in game content, supports Nintendo Switch 2, and can be obtained with an upgrade pack when you own the Nintendo Switch version. It also lists Save Data Cloud support through Nintendo Switch Online.

The practical sequence is to move or restore the save to the Switch 2 user first, then launch the compatible game or its Switch 2 Edition under that same user. The edition information does not describe a separate progression system; the relevant requirement remains that the save belongs to the matching Nintendo Account user.

Troubleshooting transfer problems

The game does not appear in the send list

  • Confirm that you selected the user who actually has the save. A different local user, even on the same console, may have no eligible file.
  • Check that the game is installed or recognized on the source Switch and that the save exists under that user.
  • Install pending system updates through System Settings > System > System Update, then reopen the transfer menu.

Switch 2 cannot receive the save

  • Check that the receiving user is linked to the same Nintendo Account as the sending user. Nintendo does not permit a transfer between unrelated accounts.
  • Connect Switch 2 to the internet and keep it close to the old console. The nearby process expects both systems to be available together.
  • Open the receive command on Switch 2 before confirming the send on the old console. If the receiving screen is not ready, cancel and begin the menu sequence again rather than repeatedly confirming on the source.

You are asked to overwrite a save

Stop if you cannot identify which file contains the progress you want. Approving overwrite removes the target save, and Nintendo’s warning says deleted or overwritten data cannot be recovered. If the target file is valuable, cancel the nearby operation and consider whether a supported cloud backup provides a safer recovery point before trying again.

The old console will not be available afterward

Do not start a nearby transfer unless you accept the source-file move. If the old system is being sold or returned before Switch 2 arrives, use Nintendo’s documented temporary server-upload path during the old console’s transfer process, or use Save Data Cloud if you have Nintendo Switch Online and the title’s cloud support is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You expected Nintendo Switch Online to be required

Separate the two workflows. The nearby Data Management transfer works without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The game’s listing includes Save Data Cloud, which is the membership-based backup and restore option. Paying for the service does not change the nearby transfer’s source-deletion behavior.

Important limits to understand

  • The compatibility designation is specific: Nintendo lists the game as supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with the Switch version.
  • The listed 550 MB size is an estimated game file size for each platform, not a measure of the save file itself.
  • A nearby transfer is a one-way move for the selected save, not a synchronization service that keeps both consoles current.
  • Save Data Cloud availability depends on the game’s support and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; the listing confirms support for this title.
  • The same Nintendo Account must be linked to the corresponding user on both consoles for the nearby transfer.
