Keep your current carrier service active until Mint Mobile confirms that the transfer is complete. During Mint activation, select the option to keep your existing number, enter your number and billing ZIP code, select your current carrier, and submit the account number and PIN or number-transfer PIN that carrier requires. Canceling the old line first can prevent the carrier from releasing your number.
Before you start, confirm that your phone is unlocked and compatible with Mint, verify that your number can be transferred, and decide whether your device will use an eSIM or a physical SIM. Most mobile transfers finish in a few hours, but Mint says incorrect information can extend the process to 48 hours; landline transfers can take up to five business days.
What to prepare before starting
A number transfer, also called porting, moves your existing telephone number from one carrier to Mint. The number itself is released by your current carrier only while its account is active, so preparation matters more than the order in which you cancel services.

Leave the old line active
Do not cancel the old carrier before submitting the transfer. Mint states: “Your service must be active with your original carrier in order for them to release your number.” If you cancel early, the number may be disconnected or become difficult to recover. Keep the account current while the request is pending. When the transfer succeeds, the old line will typically stop working as the number moves, but the exact billing and cancellation treatment depends on that carrier.

Check the phone, number and coverage
Use Mint’s compatibility and eligibility checks before ordering. The phone should be unlocked and compatible with Mint’s network. Check the number’s transfer eligibility as well as service coverage in the places where you use the phone. A compatible handset does not by itself guarantee that every number is eligible to transfer.
Collect the current-carrier credentials
Have these details ready:
- Your current mobile account number.
- The account PIN, transfer PIN or number-transfer PIN requested by the carrier.
- The billing ZIP code on the account.
- The telephone number you want to move.
There is no universal PIN format or retrieval method. Some carriers display a transfer PIN in account tools, while others require a request through support. Mint’s carrier-specific credential guide, updated April 1, 2026, is a starting point; contact your current carrier if its instructions or terminology differ.

Do not substitute the phone’s IMEI, a device passcode or a general customer-service PIN unless your carrier specifically identifies it as the transfer credential. If you have several lines, verify that the account number and transfer PIN apply to the line you are moving.
Step-by-step: move the number during Mint activation
1. Confirm the device is ready
Check the phone with Mint’s compatibility tool and confirm that it is unlocked. If the phone is locked to the current carrier, ask that carrier about its unlock requirements before beginning. Also review Mint coverage for your regular locations. Finish these checks before buying or activating a plan so that a transfer is not submitted to an unusable device.
2. Check number-transfer eligibility
Run Mint’s number eligibility check with the number you intend to keep. Eligibility can differ by number type and location. If the tool indicates that the number cannot be moved, resolve that issue with Mint or the current carrier before canceling anything; leave the existing line active while you investigate.
3. Obtain the account number, PIN and billing ZIP
Sign in to the current carrier’s account or contact its support team. Ask specifically for the information required to port or transfer a number to another carrier. Record the values exactly, including leading zeroes if the carrier uses them, and confirm the billing ZIP shown on the account. A normal account password or device unlock code may not be the transfer PIN.
4. Choose a Mint plan and SIM method
Prepare a Mint plan and select either eSIM or physical SIM. Mint’s switching guide describes both routes. eSIM is available only on compatible unlocked devices; a physical SIM is the alternative when the phone does not support eSIM or when you prefer a removable card.

5. Start Mint activation
Follow Mint’s activation instructions. Use the Mint app where supported, or follow the supplied QR-code flow for an eSIM. For a physical SIM, insert the Mint card as directed; the package includes a SIM-ejector tool according to Mint’s FAQ.
6. Select “keep your current number”
When activation asks whether you want a new number or an existing one, choose the option to keep your current number. Enter the number and billing ZIP code, select your present carrier, and provide the account number and PIN or number-transfer PIN. Review every field before submitting. A single incorrect digit can delay completion.
7. Keep the old account active while the request is pending
Do not close the old account, remove the line or request a cancellation while Mint is processing the transfer. Continue using the old SIM if it still connects. This preserves the carrier relationship needed to release the number.
8. Wait for Mint’s completion notice
Mint says it sends text and email confirmation after a successful transfer. Once that notice arrives, use the Mint SIM or eSIM and test an outgoing call, an incoming call, an SMS message and a message sent from the phone. If the old SIM loses service at the same time, that is consistent with the number moving; the confirmation is the decisive indication that activation completed.
How long the transfer takes
Mint describes timing as an estimate rather than a guarantee. Its Help Center says most transfers complete in “just a few hours.” The same guidance says incorrect information can make a mobile transfer take up to 48 hours, while landline transfers can take up to five business days.

“A few hours” is Mint’s typical-duration description, not a measured average or a promise that every transfer will finish within that time. Weekends, carrier verification and mismatched account records can affect the actual result.
eSIM or physical SIM: which should you use?
The choice affects setup, not the basic number-porting rules. In either case, the phone must be compatible and unlocked, and the old carrier account must remain active until the transfer finishes.

If the phone supports both, choose the method you can complete reliably. An eSIM can be convenient when the phone is already in your possession and compatible. A physical SIM provides a tangible replacement and can be moved to another compatible phone, but it must be available before activation.

What to do if the transfer is pending or fails
Recheck the three most common data mismatches
For a request that remains pending, first compare the submitted information with the current carrier’s records:
- Account number: use the number for the carrier account that owns the line, not a separate billing or device identifier.
- Transfer PIN: obtain a fresh PIN if the carrier issues time-limited credentials or if the first one was entered incorrectly.
- Billing ZIP: enter the ZIP attached to the account’s billing address.
Also verify that the selected carrier is the one currently providing service to that number and that the number itself was entered correctly.
Contact Mint when the information is correct
If the credentials and ZIP match the current account but the request is still pending, contact Mint support and provide the transfer status and the exact information you submitted. Keep the old service active while support investigates. Do not start a second transfer or cancel the original line unless Mint or the current carrier tells you how to proceed; duplicate requests can make it harder to identify the active case.
When the phone works but a service does not
After Mint reports completion, test calls and texts in both directions. If calls or messages fail, confirm that the Mint SIM or eSIM is selected for cellular service and that activation finished on the intended phone. If the number still appears attached to the old SIM, contact Mint with the completion message rather than canceling or discarding the old SIM immediately.

- Place an outgoing call and ask another phone to call you.
- Send an SMS and receive a reply.
- Check that the Mint line, rather than another SIM in a dual-SIM phone, is selected for calls and messages.
- Save Mint’s confirmation email or text until calling and messaging have worked normally.
- Review the old carrier account for its final billing and cancellation treatment. The number transfer generally ends service for that line, but carrier policies determine whether any remaining account or billing action is required.
Keep the old SIM until these checks pass. It can help identify whether a problem is with the transfer or with the new SIM configuration.
Special cases and limits
Landline numbers
Landline transfers follow a longer timeline than typical mobile transfers. Mint says they can take up to five business days. Plan for the old service to remain active throughout that window and do not treat the absence of an immediate confirmation as a failed request.

Numbers with uncertain eligibility
Run Mint’s eligibility check before ordering. If the result is unclear, ask Mint support and the current carrier which account information applies. A number that is active and correctly documented can still require carrier-specific handling.
Phones using dual SIM
On a dual-SIM phone, the transfer moves the telephone number, not every line or profile on the device. During testing, select the Mint line for outgoing calls and messages so you can tell whether the transferred number is working. Leave any second line configured separately if you intend to keep it.
A practical no-service-gap checklist
Schedule the switch when you can monitor both phones or SIM profiles. Before submitting anything, save important account details and make sure you can receive the current carrier’s verification messages. Do not remove the old SIM, erase its eSIM profile or close the account while Mint still shows the request as pending.
- Run Mint’s phone-compatibility, coverage and number-eligibility checks.
- Write down the current carrier’s account number, transfer PIN and billing ZIP exactly as shown in its records.
- Have the Mint app, eSIM QR code or physical SIM ready before starting activation.
- Submit the request with the keep-current-number option and review each entry before confirming.
- Continue using the old service while waiting for Mint’s text and email confirmation.
- After confirmation, test calls and SMS in both directions, then review the old account for any remaining billing action.
This sequence reduces avoidable delays, but Mint’s timing is still an estimate. A transfer can remain pending while carrier records are checked, so keep a way to reach the current service until the new line works.
Questions to answer before you submit
- Is the phone unlocked and listed as compatible by Mint?
- Does Mint’s tool show that the number is eligible to transfer?
- Is the old carrier account still active and paid according to that carrier’s requirements?
- Do you have the exact account number, transfer PIN and billing ZIP?
- Have you chosen a compatible eSIM or obtained the physical SIM?
- Can you remain reachable through the old service while the request is processed?
If any answer is no, resolve it before submitting the port request. The safest sequence is to verify the device and number, obtain the carrier credentials, activate Mint with the keep-number option, and only then let the old line close as the transfer completes.
