Switching to AT&T involves two separate jobs: porting your existing telephone number and moving the content stored on your old phone. Start the number transfer through AT&T’s activation process, using your current carrier’s account details, and keep the old line active until AT&T confirms activation. Then migrate contacts, photos, messages and other content with the method that matches your old and new phones.
If you are bringing a phone purchased elsewhere, it must be unlocked and compatible with AT&T’s network. Check compatibility before you order or begin setup; a successful number port does not make an incompatible phone work.
What you need before switching
Prepare the account and device information before you start. AT&T’s number-transfer guidance says to have the name associated with your current cellular plan, your current account number and, when required, a number-transfer PIN or account code. Your existing carrier may use different names or additional security checks, so confirm its requirements first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Gather the porting details
- Write the account holder’s name exactly as it appears with the current carrier.
- Locate the current carrier account number; do not substitute the phone’s IMEI or your billing telephone number unless the carrier specifically says to.
- Obtain the carrier’s number-transfer PIN, transfer code or account code if one is required.
- Check that the number is eligible to move to AT&T and that there are no account restrictions you need to resolve.
- Keep a copy of your latest bill or online account page available in case the information must be rechecked.
Keep the old service active
Do not cancel the old line before the transfer finishes. AT&T’s Prepaid transfer instructions explicitly say not to cancel current service before activation. Keeping the line active lets the carriers complete the port and keeps your old phone usable if a verification text or call is needed.

Check the phone you plan to use
AT&T allows customers to bring a phone bought from another seller when it is unlocked and compatible with the AT&T wireless network. Use the current compatibility check in AT&T’s Activate and Use Your Device instructions rather than assuming a particular model will work. Compatibility can vary by exact model, software and network support.
How long the number transfer can take
Transfer time depends on the number type and how you start the service. AT&T’s estimates below are service-processing estimates, not guarantees.
| Situation | AT&T estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless number added to an AT&T account | One to five days | Estimate on AT&T’s Add a Line or Device page, last updated June 3, 2025; account details and the current carrier can affect completion. |
| Non-wireless number | Five to seven days | Estimate on the same AT&T page, last updated June 3, 2025. |
| AT&T Prepaid transfer started in a store | One to three business hours | Process-specific estimate in an AT&T Prepaid article last updated August 23, 2023. |
| AT&T Prepaid transfer started online or by phone | Up to three to five business days | Process-specific estimate in the August 23, 2023 Prepaid article. |
| AT&T Prepaid transfer of a non-wireless number | At least five to seven business days | Estimate in the same Prepaid article; it is not a promise of completion by a particular date. |
Because these figures come from different AT&T pages and processes, do not combine them into one universal deadline. If the transfer is still pending after the applicable estimate, check the order or activation status with AT&T while leaving the old service connected.

Step-by-step: transfer your number to AT&T
- Confirm eligibility and choose the AT&T service. Review the number-transfer requirements at AT&T’s switch page. If you are using Prepaid, follow the Prepaid-specific process and timing rather than assuming a postpaid workflow applies.
- Start AT&T activation before turning on the new phone. AT&T’s activation instructions direct customers transferring a number from another provider to begin in the activation flow. Have the old carrier’s account name, account number and transfer PIN or code ready.
- Enter the port details exactly. A mismatch in the account name, number or security code can require correction. Use the spelling and formatting shown by the current carrier, and respond to any verification request from that carrier.
- Wait for the transfer to complete. Leave the old line active and keep the old phone powered on if it is receiving calls or messages needed for verification. Do not repeatedly cancel and restart service while the request is pending.
- Activate the AT&T phone or SIM. Follow the on-screen or order instructions after AT&T indicates that activation is ready. Restart the phone when prompted so it can register on the AT&T network.
- Test the transferred number. Place an outgoing call, receive a call from another phone, send and receive a text message and test mobile data with Wi-Fi temporarily disabled. If any function still reaches the old carrier, allow the stated processing window and contact AT&T with the order or transfer reference.
Move contacts, photos, messages and other data
Number porting changes where calls and texts for your telephone number are delivered; it does not copy the contents of your old phone. AT&T’s content-transfer guidance lists different methods for iPhone, Android and Samsung devices. Connect both phones to Wi‑Fi first, charge them, and keep the old phone available until you have checked the new one.
| Old and new phone platform | Recommended method | Connection options stated by AT&T or Samsung | Content examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone to iPhone | Apple Quick Start | Wi‑Fi; both iPhones should run the latest iOS version | Use Quick Start to set up the new iPhone and choose the transfer option shown on screen. |
| Android to Android | Restore from Google backup and sign in, or use the manufacturer’s transfer tool | Wi‑Fi; exact choices depend on the phones | Contacts, photos and other backed-up content; verify app and account data separately. |
| Samsung Galaxy to Samsung Galaxy | Samsung Smart Switch | USB cable, Wi‑Fi or a computer, according to the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE guide hosted by AT&T | Contacts, photos, music, videos, messages, notes, calendars and more. |
| Eligible AT&T Prepaid devices | AT&T Personal Cloud | Service-dependent; check your plan | Contacts, photos and videos when the feature is included. |
iPhone to iPhone with Quick Start
- Update both iPhones to the latest available iOS version before starting.
- Place the phones next to each other, turn on the new iPhone and connect both to power if possible.
- Follow the Quick Start prompt on the old iPhone, authenticate with the requested Apple account or device passcode and select the direct-transfer option.
- Keep the phones close together and on Wi‑Fi until the progress indicator finishes. The duration depends on how much data is being moved and the connection.
- Open Photos, Contacts, Messages and the apps you rely on. Some apps may require a new sign-in or may download their data after setup.
Android transfer with Google backup
- On the old Android phone, confirm that the Google backup you intend to use has completed and that you know the Google account credentials.
- During setup of the new Android phone, connect to Wi‑Fi and sign in with that same Google account when prompted.
- Choose the available restore option and wait for contacts, photos and other backed-up items to return.
- Open the Google Photos, Contacts and Messages apps, if used, and check that synchronization is enabled. Reinstall apps that are not restored automatically and sign in to each service.
AT&T’s general instructions identify Google backup and sign-in as an Android option, but they do not promise that every app, setting, message history or account will transfer automatically. Treat the restore as a starting point and verify the data that matters to you.
Samsung Smart Switch
For Samsung phones, Smart Switch can move a broader set of content. The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE guide hosted by AT&T lists contacts, photos, music, videos, messages, notes, calendars and more, with transfer by USB cable, Wi‑Fi or computer. The exact screens and supported items can vary by device and software version.

- Approve the connection on both devices, select the categories to copy and start the transfer.
- Leave the devices connected until Smart Switch reports completion, then inspect messages, media, notes and calendars on the new phone.
AT&T Personal Cloud for eligible Prepaid plans
AT&T describes Personal Cloud as a way to transfer contacts, photos and videos, but says it works only with select AT&T Prepaid plans. Check your specific plan details before relying on it. If it is unavailable, use the phone-platform method above or another backup already supported by your devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat may not move automatically
Official AT&T pages describe transfer methods and examples of content, not a guarantee that every application, account, setting or type of data will be copied. Before wiping or trading in the old phone, verify:
- Contacts appear in the phone’s address book and in any account you use for synchronization.
- Recent photos and videos open at full resolution, including items stored locally rather than in a cloud service.
- Important message threads, notes and calendars are present.
- Authenticator apps, banking apps, password managers and other security-sensitive services have been re-enrolled or signed in.
- Downloaded music, offline maps and files stored only on the old phone are available or backed up.
- You can access the Apple, Google, Samsung and other account credentials needed to download apps and restore data.
Keep the old phone charged and connected to Wi‑Fi until these checks are complete. A number transfer can finish even when content migration is incomplete, so do not treat successful activation as proof that your data is safe.

If you are bringing your own phone
An unlocked phone can be used only if its exact model is compatible with AT&T’s network. Check the device through AT&T’s current compatibility and activation guidance at KM1008711 before moving your number. If the checker does not approve the device, use an AT&T-compatible phone rather than attempting to troubleshoot a port on unsupported hardware.
Have the phone’s operating system updated, back up its contents and make sure you can open the SIM or eSIM settings required by your model. AT&T’s cited pages do not establish one connector, SIM type or setup sequence for every device, so follow the instructions shown for your specific phone and order.
Troubleshooting common problems
The transfer is rejected or remains pending
- Recheck the current account name, account number and number-transfer PIN or code against the old carrier’s records.
- Confirm that the number is eligible and that the old line has not been canceled.
- For Prepaid, verify whether you started in a store, online or by phone; those paths have different estimates.
- Contact AT&T with the transfer or order reference if the request exceeds the applicable estimate. Keep the old carrier service active while the case is investigated.
The new phone shows no service after activation
- Restart the phone and follow AT&T’s activation prompts again.
- Check that the SIM or eSIM assigned to the order is installed or enabled for the intended line.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi and test a call, text and mobile data. If none works after activation is confirmed, contact AT&T rather than canceling the old line yourself.
Calls work but data or messages do not
- Restart the phone and verify that mobile data is enabled.
- Check Messages and the phone number shown in the device settings; an account or app may still need sign-in.
- Test again away from Wi‑Fi. If only a particular app fails, update or sign in to that app after confirming the line itself works.
Some content is missing
- Compare the old and new phones category by category instead of assuming the transfer was complete.
- Run Smart Switch again for selected categories, restore the correct Google backup or repeat Quick Start if the setup allows it.
- Recover items from the original cloud account or a computer backup, and do not erase the old phone until recovery is confirmed.
Final verification before retiring the old phone
- Confirm the ported number on the new phone and make a test call in both directions.
- Send and receive SMS or RCS/iMessage messages as applicable, and test mobile data without Wi‑Fi.
- Check contacts, photos, videos, messages, notes, calendars and files you cannot replace.
- Open essential apps and complete any security or two-factor authentication setup.
- Save any remaining files and verify that backups run from the new phone.
- Only after these checks should you factory-reset, recycle or return the old device. Keep the old cellular service active until AT&T confirms the transfer and you have completed testing.
Avoid confusing an incoming switch with a port away from AT&T
Instructions for obtaining an AT&T Number Transfer PIN apply when moving a number away from AT&T, not when bringing a number into AT&T. The outbound page says consumer PINs expire after four days and business PINs after fourteen days, but those rules should not be used for an incoming transfer. For a switch to AT&T, use the current carrier’s transfer requirements and AT&T’s incoming activation flow instead.
The reliable sequence is therefore: verify eligibility, gather the old carrier’s port details, start AT&T activation, keep the old line active, wait for the number to complete, and separately migrate and verify your phone data.
