GTA Online supports one-way migration from PS4 to PS5 and from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. On the newer console, sign in with the same Rockstar Games account, open GTA Online, and choose Migrate Profile from the Landing Page or from Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile. PlayStation profiles cannot move to Xbox, Xbox profiles cannot move to PlayStation, and console profiles cannot move to PC.
Migration is a one-time continuation rather than an ongoing sync. Your old-generation profile stays available, but progress made separately on the old and new generations will not synchronize afterward. Purchased GTA$ follow stricter rules than earned GTA$, and Story Mode saves use a separate transfer process.
Which GTA Online transfers are supported?
Rockstar’s current migration system is limited to the two console-family upgrades shown below. The source and destination must be in the same family for a standard generation upgrade.
| Source profile | Supported destination | Cross-family transfer |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 4 | PlayStation 5 | Not supported to Xbox or PC |
| Xbox One | Xbox Series X|S | Not supported to PlayStation or PC |
Rockstar’s January 29, 2025 transfer overview says players can migrate Story Mode and Online progress to either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. The detailed console procedure updated February 24, 2026 describes the in-game migration prompt and the conditions that can prevent a profile from moving.

What “same console family” means
A PlayStation 4 profile moving to a PlayStation 5 is a same-family migration. An Xbox One profile moving to an Xbox Series X|S is also same-family. Moving from PlayStation to Xbox, Xbox to PlayStation, or either console family to PC is not an available profile-migration path, even if the same Rockstar Games account is used on both systems.
What to check before you start
Most failed migrations are caused by using the wrong Rockstar Games account, opening the wrong edition of the game, or assuming that an ineligible profile can be moved. Complete these checks before launching GTA Online on the destination console.
- Identify the source profile. Confirm whether your character is on PS4 or Xbox One and note the console account that currently launches it.
- Verify the Rockstar Games account. The destination console must be signed in to the Rockstar Games account associated with the old profile. If you use a different account, the migration prompt may not offer the character you expect.
- Install the current-generation edition. Use the GTA V/GTA Online edition made for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. The older PS4 or Xbox One edition is not the destination edition for this process.
- Check account status. Rockstar may reject profiles that are suspended or banned, contain illegitimate progress, or do not have enough qualifying progress to migrate.
- Separate Online from Story Mode. Decide whether you need only your GTA Online character or also a Story Mode save. Story Mode has its own transfer workflow and does not automatically behave like an Online profile migration.
- Plan for a one-time move. Once you confirm migration, treat the newer generation as the active continuation. Do not plan to alternate between generations expecting changes to merge.
How to migrate your GTA Online profile
The following procedure follows Rockstar’s detailed console instructions. Menu wording can change with game updates, but the Landing Page and Pause Menu routes are the two supported entry points described by Rockstar.
1. Use the correct Rockstar Games account
On the destination PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, sign in to the Rockstar Games account that owns the source GTA Online profile. This account identity is the link Rockstar uses to locate the eligible character. If several people use the console, check the signed-in Rockstar account before starting GTA Online rather than relying only on the console user name.
2. Open the current-generation game
Launch the current-generation GTA V/GTA Online edition on the new console and enter GTA Online. Do not begin by loading the old-generation edition on the destination hardware; the migration controls are presented in the current-generation experience.
3. Choose the migration command
Look for the migration prompt on the GTA Online Landing Page. If it is not displayed there, open the Pause Menu and select Online > Migrate Profile. The option may be unavailable until the game has connected to the Rockstar account and finished loading the Online service.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →5. Read the warning and confirm
Rockstar displays a warning before migration. Read it completely, especially the statement that GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced after migration. Confirm only when you understand that the new-generation profile becomes the continuation you will use going forward.
6. Review the character screen
After confirmation, review the resulting character screen before entering GTA Online. Check the character name, rank or other visible progress, and the profile you intended to move. If something appears wrong, do not spend transferred funds or replace the character while you investigate the account and source selection.
7. Enter GTA Online and establish your new baseline
Load into GTA Online on the destination generation, allow the session to finish saving, and verify the items and balances that Rockstar makes available under its currency rules. From this point, use the newer-generation profile as your main continuation. The original old-generation profile remains, but later activity on the two generations is not merged.
What happens to characters, progress, money and assets?
Migration moves a qualifying GTA Online profile, but not every type of value follows identical rules. The most important distinction is whether GTA$ were purchased or earned.
| Value or feature | Same-family move PS4 → PS5 or Xbox One → Series X|S |
Cross-family move PlayStation ↔ Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| GTA Online character and qualifying progress | Eligible profile can migrate | No supported profile migration |
| Purchased GTA$ | Transfer within the same console family | Do not assume transfer; Rockstar’s rule is family-limited |
| Earned GTA$ | Transfer | Earned GTA$ transfer across platform families when the applicable migration path exists |
| Story Mode save | Separate workflow | Separate workflow and edition requirements apply |
Purchased GTA$ versus earned GTA$
Purchased GTA$ are currency obtained through a real-money purchase. Rockstar limits these funds to the same console family, so a purchase made for PlayStation should not be treated as transferable to Xbox, or vice versa. Earned GTA$, such as money generated through gameplay, follow the broader transfer rule described by Rockstar and can transfer across platform families when a supported migration is available.

Because the game does not present every balance as a simple “move everything” operation, record which funds were purchased and which were earned if your account has a substantial balance. This helps you interpret the post-migration result without assuming that a missing purchased balance indicates a character-transfer failure.
Cars, properties, rank and other Online progress
Rockstar describes the operation as migration of an eligible GTA Online profile and its progress. Review the character screen and your in-game holdings after loading the destination profile rather than assuming that every item has identical treatment. If a specific vehicle, property, cosmetic item or balance is important, confirm its presence before making new purchases or deleting anything on the old generation.
What does not stay synchronized after migration?
Migration does not create a shared, continuously synchronized character. Rockstar’s warning states: “GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced after migration.” In practical terms, the old-generation profile remains, but it becomes a separate state once you begin playing on the new generation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Progress made on PS4 after a PS4-to-PS5 migration will not flow into the migrated PS5 profile.
- Progress made on PS5 will not flow backward into the PS4 profile.
- The same rule applies between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
- Do not use the old console as a second copy of the active character unless you accept that its later activity will remain separate.
This is why it is sensible to complete important activities, allow the old console to save, and then choose one generation as your primary platform before confirming migration.
Player-created missions and ratings
User-created content has an additional caveat. For same-family moves, edits to player-created missions can remain shared. For cross-family copies, a copied mission or rating does not continue reflecting later edits made on the old platform. The copy therefore represents the state available at the time of the move rather than a permanently linked version.
If you publish or maintain player-created missions, take screenshots or keep a written record of titles, descriptions and settings before migrating. After the move, open the relevant creations on the destination generation and verify that the version and ratings shown are the ones you intend to maintain.

Story Mode saves are a separate transfer
Do not confuse a GTA Online profile migration with a Story Mode save transfer. Rockstar treats Story Mode as a separate workflow with separate-save behavior. Moving your Online character does not automatically mean that a Story Mode save, campaign progress or local save slot has been moved in the same operation.
Recommended Free Tools
If you need both, handle the Online migration first only if that matches your plan, then follow the current Story Mode transfer instructions presented by Rockstar for your edition and console pair. Keep the original save until you have opened the destination save and confirmed the expected campaign progress. The exact prompts and available save slots can change between editions, so follow the labels shown by the game rather than selecting an Online migration option for a Story Mode task.

The “Migrate Profile” option is missing
- Confirm that you launched the current-generation PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition, not the PS4 or Xbox One edition.
- Check that the console is signed in to the Rockstar Games account connected to the old profile.
- Enter GTA Online and wait for the Landing Page to finish loading before opening the Pause Menu.
- Open Pause Menu > Online and look again for Migrate Profile.
- If the option remains absent, review the profile’s eligibility status and consult Rockstar’s live support article, because menu availability and account checks can change.
The wrong character or source profile appears
Stop before confirming. Sign out of the incorrect Rockstar Games account, then sign in with the account that owns the source character. If the console user account was changed recently, verify the linked Rockstar account rather than assuming that the console’s current profile is the one used on PS4 or Xbox One.
Rockstar says the profile cannot be migrated
Rockstar identifies suspended and banned accounts, profiles with illegitimate progress, and profiles with insufficient progress as examples of accounts that can be rejected. There is no legitimate in-game setting that bypasses those checks. Confirm that you selected the intended source profile, then use Rockstar Support for an account-specific explanation.
The balance is different after migration
First distinguish purchased GTA$ from earned GTA$. Purchased GTA$ are limited to the same console family, while earned GTA$ follow the broader transfer rule. Then allow the destination profile to finish loading and saving before comparing balances. Do not buy replacement currency until you have checked the account identity and the migration result.
You played on both generations after migrating
Those sessions are not automatically combined. Choose the generation you want as the active continuation and keep the other profile as a separate historical state. Contact Rockstar Support if you believe the wrong profile was selected or that the migration itself did not complete; do not attempt repeated migrations as a workaround.

Practical decision guide
You are moving from PS4 to PS5
Use the same Rockstar Games account, install the PS5 edition, start GTA Online, and migrate the PS4 profile. Purchased GTA$ remain eligible within the PlayStation family, subject to Rockstar’s account checks. Afterward, continue on PS5 because later PS4 progress will not synchronize.
You are moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S
Use the same Rockstar Games account, install the Xbox Series X|S edition, and migrate the Xbox One profile through the Landing Page or Online > Migrate Profile. Purchased GTA$ remain within the Xbox family, and the same one-time, non-synchronizing behavior applies.
You want to move from PlayStation to Xbox, or Xbox to PlayStation
There is no supported profile migration between these console families. Earned GTA$ are described as transferable across platform families when a supported migration exists, but that rule does not create a cross-family character transfer. You will need to start a new profile on the destination family.

Console profiles cannot migrate to PC under the supported paths. Treat the PC version as a separate starting point rather than purchasing it expecting your console character to appear.
Post-migration checklist
- Confirm the destination edition is the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version.
- Verify the Rockstar Games account and source platform shown during migration.
- Check the character screen before entering a long session.
- Review GTA$ with the purchased-versus-earned distinction in mind.
- Open important vehicles, properties and user-created missions to verify the destination state.
- Keep the old console profile intact until you are satisfied with the migration.
- Choose one generation for future play because progress on separate generations will not sync.
- Handle Story Mode saves through their separate transfer workflow.
Official wording and support timing
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s transfer overview states: “You can migrate your Story Mode and Online progress to either the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.” Its migration instructions also state: “GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced after migration.” The overview was dated January 29, 2025, and the detailed console procedure was updated February 24, 2026. Because Rockstar can change eligibility checks and menu labels, use the live support guidance shown for your account if the in-game path differs.
