For a complete move to Switch 2, use Nintendo’s System Transfer during the new console’s initial setup. Choose local communication when both consoles are together and you want to transfer directly. Choose server transfer when the old Switch is being traded in or will not be available during setup. If you want to move only particular games while leaving the old console usable, use Transfer Your Save Data instead.
The choice matters: a full transfer moves every user and can remove data from the source console, while an individual save transfer moves selected games and does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Decide which result you need before turning in, selling or initializing the old system.
Choose the right transfer method first
There are four realistic migration paths. Your choice depends on whether the old console is available, whether every user should move, whether the game supports Save Data Cloud, and whether you need to keep a copy of a save on the original Switch.
Recommended Free Tools
| Method | Both consoles available? | What moves | What happens to the old Switch? | Nintendo Switch Online required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| System Transfer: local communication | Yes, nearby during Switch 2 setup | All users, settings, linked Nintendo Accounts, friends, activity, screenshots and videos, plus eligible saves and registrations | Some saves are deleted from the source; the transfer cannot be reversed | No membership is needed for the local transfer itself |
| System Transfer: server transfer | No; useful when the old console is being sold or traded in | Source-console data uploaded to Nintendo’s server for the Switch 2 setup process | The source console is initialized after upload | A Nintendo Account is required for the upload |
| Transfer Your Save Data | Yes, nearby and connected to the internet | Only the selected game save or saves | The transferred save is removed from the source | No |
| Save Data Cloud recovery | No; the old console can be unavailable | Cloud backups for supported games only | No source console is involved | Active membership and an existing cloud backup are required |
A full system transfer is the normal replacement-console procedure. The individual tool is better when the old Switch must retain its other users and data, or when you need to move a title that does not support Save Data Cloud. Cloud recovery is a fallback, not a substitute for transferring a save that was never backed up.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What a full System Transfer moves
Nintendo’s transfer process is designed to move the console’s user environment rather than merely copy game files. It transfers:
- All users on the source console
- User settings and signed-in Nintendo Accounts
- Friends, Play Activity and the “Users You Have Played With” list
- System screenshots and videos
- Eligible save data and related system information
The scope is console-wide. You cannot use a full transfer to select only one family member while leaving another user behind. Confirm that every profile owner is ready, particularly on a shared household console.
Digital software normally needs to be downloaded again on the Switch 2. Virtual game-card registrations may require a separate step, and the Parental Controls app may need to be linked again. A transfer therefore gets your accounts and records into place, but it is not a guarantee that every installed download is immediately playable without follow-up.
Important warning for shared consoles
A system transfer includes every user on the source Switch. Confirm that each person who uses the console is ready before you begin. A local system transfer from Switch to Switch 2 cannot be reversed back to the original Switch. Treat the target as the new primary console for the transferred environment, and do not start until you have checked the source for anything that must be retained.
Prepare both consoles
- Install system updates. Update the old Switch and the Switch 2 before starting. Nintendo’s legacy user-transfer documentation required both systems to be on system menu version 4.0.0 or later; current transfer screens may impose newer requirements, so install the latest offered update rather than relying on the old minimum.
- Charge or connect both systems to power. A shutdown during transfer can leave you unable to complete setup.
- Connect to the internet. The local process uses nearby-console communication, but internet access is still needed for account, software and follow-up operations. Server transfer needs an internet connection for the upload, and individual save transfer requires both consoles to be online.
- Check the source console. Open the games you care about and verify that the expected users are present. Note which profiles are linked to Nintendo Accounts and which games are important. Do not factory-reset, sell or ship the old Switch until the target saves have been checked.
- Decide whether any source save must remain. If you need a copy on the old console, do not use a full local system transfer for that save. Use the individual save-data tool instead, understanding that it moves the save rather than creating a duplicate.
- Plan for media and downloads. Screenshots and videos are part of the system-transfer content, while downloaded software may need to be retrieved again. If you use removable storage for compatible Switch 2 content or media, have a suitable microSD Express card available, but do not treat it as a save backup.
Complete move with local communication
Use this route when the old Switch and Switch 2 are in the same place. It is the most direct option for replacing one console with the other and lets you verify the result immediately.
- Turn on the Switch 2 and begin its initial setup.
- When setup presents the transfer option, choose the system-transfer path.
- Select local communication when asked how to connect to the source console.
- On the old Switch, open the transfer instructions shown by the setup process and approve the source-console operation.
- Keep both consoles close together, powered on and untouched while the users, settings, accounts and eligible data are copied.
- Wait for the Switch 2 to finish setup. Do not remove a game card, disconnect power or force either system to sleep.
- After setup, open the Switch 2 user profiles and launch several important games to confirm that the expected saves load.
- Redownload digital games and complete any virtual game-card or Parental Controls steps shown by the system.
How local transfer affects saves
Save behavior depends on the user and the game:
- For users linked to Nintendo Accounts, saves for games supported by Save Data Cloud are copied to the Switch 2 and remain on the old Switch.
- Saves belonging to users who are not linked to a Nintendo Account are deleted from the source as part of the transfer.
- Saves for games that do not support Save Data Cloud are also deleted from the source during the full transfer.
This distinction is easy to miss because the transfer is presented as one operation. Before confirming, identify unsupported titles and any unlinked profiles. If either category must remain on the old console, stop and use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data for that game before committing to a full system transfer.

Use server transfer when the old Switch is leaving you
Server transfer is intended for a trade-in, sale or any situation in which the source console will not be available beside the Switch 2. The old console uploads its data to Nintendo’s server, and the Switch 2 retrieves it during setup. A Nintendo Account is required for the upload.
- On the old Switch, start the system-transfer process and choose the server-transfer option.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account required by the upload process.
- Allow the source console to upload its transfer data completely.
- Understand that the old Switch is initialized after the upload. This removes its local users and data, so do not begin until you have made a final backup decision.
- During Switch 2 setup, choose the option to receive the server transfer and sign in with the relevant Nintendo Account.
- Let the Switch 2 download and apply the transfer, then redownload digital software and complete any registrations requested on screen.
Server transfer is not a way to preserve a working second copy of the old console. Once the source is initialized, unsynced saves that were not included in the transfer cannot be recovered from that device. If you are uncertain whether a save is eligible, use individual save transfer while both systems are still available or confirm a cloud backup first.
Move selected saves with Transfer Your Save Data
Use the individual tool when you are keeping the old Switch, moving only certain games, or dealing with a title whose saves are not covered by Save Data Cloud. Both consoles must be nearby and connected to the internet. This is also the safer route when other household users should remain on the source system.
- On the source Switch, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console on the source and the receiving option on the Switch 2.
- Choose the user and game save to move.
- Confirm that the same Nintendo Account is linked to the corresponding user on both consoles.
- Approve the transfer on the target console and wait for it to finish.
- Launch the game on Switch 2 and verify the save before changing or deleting anything on the source.
Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for this nearby-console feature. The important restrictions are that the consoles need internet access, they must be close enough to communicate, and the same Nintendo Account must be linked to the source and target users. An individual save transfer does not migrate the entire user profile, friend list, screenshots or digital purchases.
This is a move, not a copy: after a successful individual transfer, the save is removed from the source console. If you need two independent copies, the transfer tool does not provide that duplication. Verify the target first, because the source copy is no longer available after completion.

Save recovery is more limited. Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud can restore a save only when all of the following are true:
- The game supports Save Data Cloud.
- A cloud backup was created before the old console became unavailable.
- The Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for the cloud route.
Signing in alone does not recreate saves that were never backed up. A save that existed only in the old console’s system memory cannot be recovered after that console is gone or initialized. Cloud recovery also does not help with games excluded from Save Data Cloud.
Games, game cards and downloaded software
Digital games
A system transfer moves the account and purchase relationship, but the Switch 2 may still need to download the software again. Use the eShop account that owns the purchase, then allow the download to complete before judging whether the transfer worked. If a title is absent from the home screen, check the eShop redownload area and any virtual game-card registration screen.

Game saves are stored in Switch system memory and generally follow the selected user, not the game card. Playing a compatible title from a card does not move the save onto the card. Insert the card into Switch 2 after the user and save have been transferred, then start the game with the matching profile. Moving the card itself does not transfer a save or create a backup.
Save location and microSD Express
Switch 2 save data is stored in system memory. Nintendo states that save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card. A microSD Express card is for compatible downloaded software, screenshots and videos, and Nintendo’s transfer instructions may ask you to insert one temporarily when moving media. It is not a save-transfer device and cannot substitute for System Transfer, Transfer Your Save Data or Save Data Cloud. A card may be useful for storage capacity, but buying one is not a prerequisite for moving saves.
Common problems and the safest fix
The Switch 2 cannot find the old console
- Bring the consoles close together and remove obstacles that may interfere with local communication.
- Confirm both systems are powered on, updated and connected as requested.
- Exit unrelated menus and restart the transfer screens on both consoles.
- If the old console will not be available again, stop trying local transfer and use the server route before initializing it.
A game starts without the expected save
- Check that you selected the correct user profile on Switch 2.
- Confirm that the game save was included in the full transfer or was selected in Transfer Your Save Data.
- For a cloud restore, verify that the title supports Save Data Cloud and that a backup existed under the same Nintendo Account.
- Do not delete the old console’s data until the target save has launched successfully.
A digital game is missing
Check the eShop’s redownload area while signed in to the purchasing Nintendo Account. A missing icon after transfer does not necessarily mean the purchase was lost; software downloads and virtual game-card registrations can require separate follow-up.

A user or account is missing
Review the transfer scope. A full system transfer includes all source users, but an individual save transfer does not create or migrate an entire user profile. Add or sign in to the correct Nintendo Account on Switch 2, then repeat the appropriate account or save procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I transfer Switch games to Switch 2?
For a complete replacement, start System Transfer during Switch 2’s initial setup and choose local communication when both consoles are together. The account and purchase relationship moves, but digital software may need to be downloaded again. Use Transfer Your Save Data instead if you want to move only selected games.
Will my save data transfer?
Eligible saves move with a full system transfer. With local transfer, saves for Nintendo Account-linked users and games supported by Save Data Cloud are copied and remain on the old Switch. Saves for unlinked users and games without Save Data Cloud are deleted from the source, so use individual save transfer first if they must be preserved.
Can I move my Nintendo Account to Switch 2?
A full System Transfer moves signed-in Nintendo Accounts and the associated user environment. An individual save transfer requires the same Nintendo Account to be linked to the source and target users, but it does not move the entire profile, friends or settings.
What if I already sold my old Switch?
Sign in on Switch 2 with the Nintendo Account used on the old system and redownload purchased digital games from the eShop. Saves can be restored only from an existing Save Data Cloud backup for a supported game with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Saves that existed only in the old console’s memory cannot be recreated.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to transfer saves?
No for nearby-console Transfer Your Save Data and no membership is needed for the local System Transfer itself. Nintendo Switch Online is required for the cloud-recovery route, and that route also needs an existing backup for a supported game.
Can I keep a copy of a save on both consoles?
The individual save tool is a move, not a copy, so it removes the selected save from the source. A local full transfer preserves some eligible cloud-supported saves on the old Switch, but it does not preserve unlinked-user saves or saves from games without Save Data Cloud.
Can I use a microSD Express card to move saves?
No. Switch 2 save data is stored in system memory, and Nintendo says it cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card. The card supports compatible software, screenshots and videos, not save-file transfer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does transferring a game card transfer its save?
No. Saves are stored in system memory and generally follow the selected user, not the physical card. Transfer the user and save through Nintendo’s system or individual save tools, then insert the card into Switch 2.
The Bottom Line
Use System Transfer during Switch 2 setup for a complete move: local communication when both consoles are together, or server transfer when the old system is being traded in. Use Transfer Your Save Data for selected games, especially unsupported or unlinked saves that must be handled deliberately. Verify every important game on Switch 2 before initializing or surrendering the old console, and remember that microSD Express storage cannot carry save files.
