Use The Witcher 3’s in-game Cross Progression feature. Update the game, link the same CD PROJEKT RED account on both platforms, create a new save after enabling the feature, and verify that a cloud icon appears beside the save. On the destination platform, link that same account through My Rewards, then choose the uploaded save under Load Game. This is an account-and-cloud transfer; you do not copy a PC save file directly to a console with a USB drive.
What actually transfers
Cross Progression makes your current The Witcher 3 save available through the CD PROJEKT RED account connected to the game. The official guide describes the feature as providing the latest save for every save type. The save is uploaded from inside the game and retrieved from inside the game on the other platform.
Your game ownership does not move with the save. You must have The Witcher 3 installed on the destination platform, and the destination edition must contain the expansions or downloadable content required by the save. Cross Progression also does not merge two independent playthroughs. Treat the destination copy as another client accessing the cloud-uploaded save.
Before you start
- Install the latest available game update on the source platform. The installed version is shown on the game’s main menu.
- Have access to one CD PROJEKT RED account and use that exact account on both platforms.
- Install the game on the destination platform before attempting to load the save.
- Check whether the save uses Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, other downloadable content, or mods.
- Make sure the destination edition can read that content. A Complete Edition can read a base-game save, but a Complete Edition save requires the corresponding expansions and DLC on the destination.
- Keep an internet connection available while linking the account and uploading or downloading the save.
Cross Progression is enabled by default after you link the game, but confirm the setting before making the upload. You can find it at Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression.

PC to console: exact transfer procedure
1. Update the source installation
Start The Witcher 3 on the PC that contains the save. Confirm that the game is fully updated, then look at the main menu to note the installed version. Updating first prevents an older client from creating a save that the destination build cannot interpret.
2. Open the save-management screen
Choose Load Game. At the bottom of that screen, look for the Cross Progression control. Depending on the state of your account, the game may instead direct you to connect through My Rewards. Follow that prompt rather than trying to browse to a local save folder.
3. Link your CD PROJEKT RED account
Sign in to the CD PROJEKT RED account that you will also use on the console. If you have more than one account, record which email or sign-in method you selected; using a different account later is the most common reason an apparently successful upload is not visible.

4. Confirm Cross Progression is enabled
Open Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. Leave the feature enabled. Linking normally turns it on automatically, but a previous change to the setting can leave it disabled.
5. Create a fresh save
Do not rely only on an older save made before account linking. Return to the game, create a new manual save after Cross Progression is enabled, and wait for the upload to finish. A cloud icon should appear beside that save’s name. That icon is your confirmation that the save has been published to the Cross Progression service.
6. Start the destination copy
Launch The Witcher 3 on the console. Open My Rewards and sign in to the same CD PROJEKT RED account used on the PC. If the console asks you to connect an account during startup, complete that connection before opening the load list.
7. Load the uploaded save
Choose Load Game. The cloud-uploaded save should appear with the same identifying information as the source save. Select it and allow the game to finish loading before closing the application or disconnecting from the network.

The direction does not change the method. A console save can be uploaded by enabling Cross Progression, making a new save, checking for the cloud icon, and then retrieving it from Load Game on the PC after linking the same account. The same sequence applies when moving between a console and another supported platform: link first, save second, verify the cloud marker, and load last.
Do not confuse this account workflow with platform backup tools. PlayStation cloud storage, Xbox saved-data synchronization, and a USB storage device are platform-family mechanisms. They are useful in the cases below, but they are not a way to copy a PC save directly to a console.
Which transfer method fits your platform pair?
| Platform pair | Recommended route | Account or service | Network dependency | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC to PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo console | In-game Cross Progression | Same CD PROJEKT RED account on both devices | Internet connection for account linking and cloud upload/download | Edition, expansion, DLC, and mod compatibility still apply |
| Console to PC | In-game Cross Progression | Same CD PROJEKT RED account on both devices | Internet connection for the cloud workflow | A new save must be made after enabling the feature |
| PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 using backward-compatible play | PlayStation Plus cloud upload, LAN or Wi-Fi transfer, or compatible storage-device transfer | Same PSN account | Depends on the selected PlayStation transfer method | This is a same-family transfer, not a PC-to-console procedure |
| Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S | Smart Delivery with internet-connected cloud-synced saves, or the consoles’ network-transfer option | Same Xbox account | Internet or local network, depending on the route | Use Xbox’s saved-data and network-transfer process rather than treating it as a PC transfer |
If your move is PC to any console, use the first route in the table even if both devices are made by the same company. If your move is PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, the platform-specific route can be more appropriate because those systems provide their own backward-compatibility transfer tools.

Edition, expansion, and DLC compatibility
Base-game save to Complete Edition
CD PROJEKT RED says a save created in the base game can load in the Complete Edition. This is the least restrictive direction: the newer edition can read a save that does not depend on expansion content.
Complete Edition save to base game
A save made in the Complete Edition will not load in the base game unless the destination has the required expansions and DLC. If the load list is present but the save refuses to open, verify the destination’s installed content before changing account settings.
Regular, GOTY, and Complete Edition console products
The official support information treats local console saves for the regular game and the GOTY or Complete Edition as separate products; they are not interchangeable as ordinary local files. Cross Progression is the supported route for continuing from a base-version save when moving to a different compatible product. Owning both products does not by itself convert one local save into the other.
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine
A recent CD PROJEKT RED FAQ says Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included in the Base Game, that the save files remain compatible, and that Cross Progression remains functional. Edition naming and upgrade policies can change, so check the current official FAQ if your installation has recently been upgraded or reclassified.
Future or remastered editions
The same FAQ described a planned remastered upgrade for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with Nintendo Switch owners intended to receive that upgrade free once released. That statement is time-sensitive. Confirm the current release status, edition requirements, and save-compatibility notes before moving a save into a newly released version.
Modded saves require matching setups
A modded save is not automatically portable simply because Cross Progression can see it. CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-platform mod guidance says the same set of mods must be enabled on both platforms for the save to remain compatible. The destination must also have versions of those mods that it can run.
For a reliable transfer, write down the exact mod list and versions used to create the source save. Install and enable the matching set on the destination before loading. A missing or incompatible mod can prevent the save from loading correctly or can produce broken quests, items, or character states.
Console achievements and trophies are disabled on modded saves according to the same support guidance. If earning console achievements matters, create and transfer an unmodded save instead of removing mods from a save that depends on them.
Troubleshooting when the save is missing
The destination shows no cloud save
- Return to the source platform and confirm the game is updated.
- Check that the source and destination are signed in to the same CD PROJEKT RED account, not merely accounts that use the same console profile name.
- Verify Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression is enabled on the source.
- Create another manual save after enabling the feature.
- Wait for the cloud icon to appear beside that new save before switching platforms.
- Restart the destination game, open My Rewards, reconnect the account if prompted, and check Load Game again.
The official troubleshooting material does not document every account or network error state, so an error message may require the platform’s sign-in or connection support in addition to these checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe save appears but will not load
- Check whether the save was created with Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, or other DLC that is not installed on the destination.
- Confirm that a Complete Edition save is not being opened in a base-game installation without the required expansions.
- Check whether the source save is modded. The destination needs the same compatible mod set.
- Confirm that the two installations are compatible products. Regular and GOTY or Complete console editions do not behave as interchangeable local-save products.
- Install the latest available update on both systems, then try loading the freshly uploaded save again.
The cloud icon never appears
A save created before linking or before enabling Cross Progression is not the correct test. Make a new save after the account connection and setting have been confirmed. If the icon still does not appear, check the internet connection and account sign-in, then restart the game and repeat the save operation.

You linked the wrong account
Sign out only after noting which account currently owns the uploaded save. Reopen My Rewards on the destination and connect the account used on the source. A different CD PROJEKT RED account creates a separate cloud view, so the destination can look empty even when the source upload succeeded.
You are trying to use a USB drive
A PC save copied to removable storage is not the supported PC-to-console method. The console expects the in-game Cross Progression record, not a Windows save-file path. Use the cloud upload sequence instead. Storage-device transfer is documented for certain PlayStation same-family moves, not as a general PC-to-console conversion.

PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5
For backward-compatible PlayStation play, CD PROJEKT RED lists three system-level options: upload the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, transfer it over a LAN or Wi-Fi connection, or use a compatible storage device. These options operate under the same PSN account. They are distinct from moving a PC save to a PlayStation console, where Cross Progression is the relevant route.

The Xbox support procedure uses Smart Delivery with internet-connected cloud-synced saved data, or the consoles’ network-transfer option. Keep the consoles connected to the appropriate Xbox account and network while the saved data synchronizes. This is an Xbox-to-Xbox migration, not a replacement for linking a CD PROJEKT RED account when the source is a PC.
How to protect the original save
- Keep the original source installation until the destination save has loaded successfully.
- Make a clearly named manual save immediately before enabling or testing Cross Progression.
- After the first successful load, create a new destination save rather than overwriting every older copy.
- If you use mods, preserve the source mod list and do not update or remove individual mods between creating and loading the transfer.
- Do not assume that buying a second copy of the game transfers saves; ownership and save synchronization are separate.
What you should expect after a successful transfer
The destination’s Load Game screen will contain the newly uploaded save, and selecting it will resume the same playthrough. The process does not provide a local, manually browsable copy of the PC file on the console. Future progress can be moved back by repeating the same pattern: enable Cross Progression, make a new save, confirm its cloud marker, and load it on the other platform.
Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer a Witcher 3 save without a CD PROJEKT RED account?
No. The PC-to-console workflow depends on linking the same CD PROJEKT RED account on both platforms through Cross Progression.
Do I need to buy the game again on the destination?
A game copy on the destination is required if you do not already own it there, but purchasing a copy does not itself transfer saves. The save becomes available through Cross Progression after the account and content requirements are satisfied.
Why should I create a new save instead of uploading an old one?
The supported procedure uploads a save made after Cross Progression is enabled. The cloud icon beside that fresh save confirms that it reached the service.
Can a modded PC save be loaded on a console?
Only when the destination can use the same compatible set of mods. A missing or incompatible mod can stop the save from loading correctly, and console achievements or trophies are disabled on modded saves.
Is PlayStation Plus the way to move a PC save to PlayStation?
No. PlayStation Plus cloud upload is one of the documented options for PS4-to-PS5 backward-compatible transfers. A PC-to-PlayStation move uses the game’s Cross Progression account-and-cloud workflow.
