To transfer contacts from a Samsung Galaxy phone to Google, first identify where they’re stored. Contacts already tied to a Google account can be synced from Samsung Contacts; contacts saved only on the phone or SIM may need Google’s separate device-and-SIM backup setting. Check the destination account before changing sync settings, then verify the contacts at Google Contacts.
Choose the right method for where your contacts are stored
Samsung’s Contacts app can sync a Google account, but account sync and converting local or SIM contacts are different tasks. The right route depends on the label or account associated with the contacts:
- Google account: Sign in to that account on the Galaxy and enable contact sync. Google contacts sync to Android after sign-in, and changes sync across devices. If multiple Google accounts are signed in, contacts from each may appear on the phone; select and verify the account you intend to use. Google’s sync guidance.
- Phone, Device, Local, or SIM: Try Google’s device-and-SIM backup setting, if it is available for your phone and account. This saves eligible contacts as Google contacts. Google’s device and SIM backup instructions.
- Another cloud service: Contacts synced from services such as Exchange or Yahoo are not automatically saved as Google contacts by the device-and-SIM backup feature. Use an import workflow instead. Google’s device and SIM backup guidance.
- Moving to a new Galaxy: Smart Switch can transfer contacts and other supported data between devices. It is intended for broader device migration, not required to sync contacts to Google on your current phone. Samsung Smart Switch Mobile on Google Play.
Sync Google-account contacts in Samsung Contacts
- On the Galaxy, open Contacts.
- Tap Menu (three horizontal lines), then Manage contacts > Sync contacts.
- Enable the Google account where you want the contacts and tap Sync.
The phone needs an internet connection and a Google account. Samsung notes that menu names or locations can vary by model and software version. Contacts already in the selected Google account may also appear in Samsung Contacts after syncing. Follow Samsung’s Galaxy contact sync instructions.
Save local or SIM contacts as Google contacts
If a contact is marked Phone, Device, Local, or SIM, enabling account sync alone may not move it into Google. Google documents an Android setting for automatically backing up device-only and SIM contacts. The route and availability vary by device and Android version.

- Open Settings > Google > All services > Backup & restore > Google Contacts sync. Depending on Android version, you may need to start from your Google profile icon.
- Select the destination Google account and open View settings.
- Under Sync options, enable Backup device-only & SIM contacts automatically.
Google says the setting backs up existing and future device-only or SIM contacts as Google contacts. It supports only one destination Google account, is unavailable for child and Google Workspace accounts, and depends on the device make and model. If the setting does not appear, that device or account may not support it. See Google’s eligibility and setup details.
Check that the contacts reached the intended account
- Before syncing, sign in to the intended Google account in a browser and check its contact list. Make a backup if the contacts are important. Samsung warns that contacts can be deleted because of sync errors.
- After syncing or enabling backup, open that same account’s contacts on the web and confirm the expected names and details are present. Samsung’s guide directs users to the Google account’s People and sharing > Contacts area; Google may change its site navigation.
Do not rely only on what appears in the phone’s Contacts app: it can show contacts from several accounts and storage locations. Samsung’s instructions for checking the account and contacts include this verification step.

Troubleshoot sync problems without losing changes
- Contacts appear on the phone but not online: Check their storage label and the Google account selected. Local or SIM contacts may need the device-and-SIM backup setting rather than ordinary account sync.
- The backup option is missing: Google says device-and-SIM backup depends on the phone and account. It is not available for child or Workspace accounts.
- Sync seems stalled: In the Google Contacts app, pull down to trigger a manual refresh. Google documents this refresh method.
- You are considering turning sync off: Wait until pending changes have reached the Google account. Google warns that disabling sync removes Google contacts from the device and can lose local changes that have not synced. Read Google’s sync warning.
- You are transferring to another Galaxy: Smart Switch may help with a broader migration, but confirm compatibility and transfer support for both devices. Its Google Play listing says some features may not work on certain devices and states Android eligibility beginning at Android 6.0. Smart Switch listing.
Galaxy S23-specific import and account-sync routes
For the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung’s April 2024 user manual describes importing contacts from other storage through Contacts > Manage contacts > Import contacts. It also documents account sync through Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > [account] > Sync account > Contacts, and merging duplicates through Contacts > Manage contacts > Merge contacts.
