To move one Resident Evil save while you have both consoles, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data. The nearby-console transfer requires both systems to be online and the same Nintendo Account linked to the users involved, but it does not require Nintendo Switch Online. It moves the save off the original Switch, so check which save you want to keep before starting.
If the original Switch is unavailable, the alternative is Save Data Cloud—but only when the exact Resident Evil release supports Nintendo’s cloud service and the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. A full System Transfer is broader still and is intended for moving console information during Switch 2 setup, not simply for copying one game save.

Choose the right transfer method
There are three Nintendo features that can sound interchangeable but have different requirements and consequences. Choosing the right one first prevents an unnecessary console migration or an accidental overwrite.
Recommended Free Tools
| Method | What you need | What happens to the save or console | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer Your Save Data | Both consoles, internet access on each, nearby systems, current system software, and the same Nintendo Account linked to the users involved. Nintendo Switch Online is not required. | The selected save moves to Switch 2 and is removed from the source Switch. It is a move, not a copy. | One Resident Evil save when the original Switch is available. |
| Save Data Cloud download | An active Nintendo Switch Online membership and Save Data Cloud support for that specific Resident Evil game. | The backup downloads to Switch 2. If a local save already exists there, the download can replace it, and overwritten data cannot be recovered. | Recovering a compatible cloud-backed save when the original Switch is unavailable, or using a cloud copy by choice. |
| System Transfer | A broader console migration performed during Switch 2 setup. Nintendo describes local and server-upload routes. | Moves broader console information. The local route removes source data after completion; the server-upload route initializes the source console. | Moving the console environment rather than just one Resident Evil save. |
For most readers moving a single game, the first row is the simplest path. It avoids a Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement and does not ask you to migrate unrelated console information. It does, however, require access to both systems at the same time.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. A successful save transfer therefore does not prove that every Resident Evil release will run identically on Switch 2. Check the game’s compatibility information if the software does not launch, displays an error, or behaves differently after the move.
Transfer an individual save with both consoles available
What to confirm before opening the menus
- Both consoles are online: Connect the original Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 to the internet. Internet access is part of Nintendo’s nearby-transfer requirements even though Nintendo Switch Online is not.
- The systems are close together: Keep the two consoles near one another while the transfer is being arranged and completed.
- System software is current: Update both consoles to the latest available system software before trying to pair them.
- The user accounts match: The relevant user on each console must be linked to the same Nintendo Account. Selecting a different local user can make the expected save appear to be missing.
- You have identified the correct save: If more than one user has played the Resident Evil title, confirm which user owns the progress you want to move.
- You understand the destination state: Check whether Switch 2 already contains a save for the same software. Be ready to leave it alone if it is the progress you actually want to keep.
Do not start by deleting a local save manually. The transfer menu is designed to move the selected save and handles removal from the source as part of the process. Manually removing files first can leave you with less information to compare when a prompt appears.
Send the save from the original Switch
- On the source Nintendo Switch, open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Select Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the user associated with the Resident Evil save.
- Choose the Resident Evil save data you want to move, then continue through the on-screen instructions.
Use the source console’s user selection carefully. Save data is associated with a user, so choosing the wrong profile is a common reason for transferring the wrong progress or concluding that no save exists.
Receive it on Switch 2
- On Switch 2, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Receive Save Data.
- Follow the prompts so Switch 2 can receive the save being sent by the original console.
- If Switch 2 reports that save data already exists for the software, read the overwrite prompt instead of accepting it automatically.
- Proceed only when replacing the target’s current save is what you intend. Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered.
- After the transfer finishes, open the Resident Evil game on Switch 2 and verify that the expected user and progress are present.
The final check matters because the operation moves data rather than creating a permanent duplicate. Confirm the campaign, profile, or other progress you recognize before you reset, sell, or give away the source console.
What the nearby transfer does—and does not do
Nintendo’s nearby-console feature does not require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. There is no membership purchase needed solely to use this route. The requirement is access to both consoles, an internet connection on each, compatible software, and matching Nintendo Account links for the users involved.
The source save is removed after a successful move. This means the feature is not a way to keep two independently progressing copies. If you want to continue playing on both consoles, understand that the transferred save is no longer left behind on the original Switch by this process.
The operation concerns save data, not a promise that the game license, download, update, or compatibility status will be identical on both consoles. Make sure the Resident Evil software is available on Switch 2 through the appropriate Nintendo account and that the release is supported there.
Use a cloud backup if the original Switch is unavailable
Save Data Cloud is a separate route. It can be useful when the old console cannot be accessed, but it is not a universal fallback for every Resident Evil game on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo requires both an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and support for Save Data Cloud in the exact game release.
Do not infer eligibility from the Resident Evil name alone. Different releases can have different feature support. Check the individual game’s Nintendo product information or open its Save Data Cloud menu while signed in to the relevant user. If the game does not offer the feature, a cloud download cannot replace the nearby-console transfer.
Requirements for a cloud download
- The Nintendo Account used on Switch 2 must correspond to the user whose backup was created.
- The account must have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- The specific Resident Evil software must support Save Data Cloud.
- A backup must already exist for that user and title; membership by itself does not create a historical save that was never uploaded.
- You must be willing to replace the local save if Switch 2 currently has one for that game.
The last point is especially important if you have already started the game on Switch 2. A cloud download replaces the local save for that title. Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered, so compare the local and cloud versions before confirming.
Download the backup on Switch 2
Nintendo documents two ways to reach the download command:
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- From the game icon’s software menu, choose Save Data Cloud, select the relevant user, and choose Download Save Data.
- From settings, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select the user, choose the Resident Evil game, and select Download Save Data.
Check the title, user, and displayed backup before downloading. If the menu shows no backup, verify the Nintendo Account, membership status, and game-specific cloud support rather than assuming the save was transferred successfully. If a local save is present, stop at the confirmation screen unless you have decided that the cloud version is the one to keep.
Nearby transfer versus cloud download
Use these questions to decide between the two individual-save routes:
- Is the original Switch available? If yes, nearby transfer is available. If no, cloud is only possible if a compatible backup already exists.
- Does the exact Resident Evil release support Save Data Cloud? If you have not verified this, do not promise that cloud recovery will work.
- Do you have Nintendo Switch Online? It is unnecessary for nearby transfer but required for cloud backup access.
- Are you willing to move or replace data? Nearby transfer removes the source save. Cloud download can replace the target’s local save.
Nearby transfer is generally preferable when both consoles are in front of you because it avoids title-specific cloud uncertainty and does not add a membership requirement. Cloud is the practical option when the source is gone, but only after eligibility and the existence of a backup are confirmed.
When a full System Transfer makes sense
Nintendo’s System Transfer is designed for a wider move from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2. It is performed during initial setup of the target and can move broader console information. It is therefore different from selecting one Resident Evil save in the Transfer Your Save Data menu.
Nintendo describes a local route when both systems are present and a server-upload route for a situation in which the source console will not be available. The consequences are substantial: the local route removes source data after completion, while the server-upload route initializes the source console. Treat either option as a console migration, not as a reversible way to experiment with one game.
If your only objective is to continue one Resident Evil campaign, use the individual-save menu instead. Choose System Transfer when you intentionally want the broader console move during setup and have reviewed what happens to the source system.
Common problems and safe checks
- The consoles do not find or connect to each other: Confirm that both are connected to the internet, close to one another, and updated to the latest system software. Reopen the transfer menus after correcting those conditions.
- The expected user is missing: Check the local profile selected on each console and confirm that both users are linked to the same Nintendo Account. A different user can have a different save or no save at all.
- The game does not appear in the list: Verify that you selected the user who actually played that Resident Evil release. Also check that the software is installed or otherwise available on the destination as appropriate.
- Switch 2 already has progress: Do not approve an overwrite simply to clear the prompt. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered.
- A cloud backup cannot be found: Confirm the exact game’s Save Data Cloud support, the active Nintendo Switch Online membership, the Nintendo Account, and the selected user. A cloud menu cannot restore a backup that was never created.
- You expected a duplicate on the old console: Nearby transfer removes the selected save from the source. It is not a copy operation.
- The save arrives but the game will not run correctly: Check compatibility for that specific Nintendo Switch release. Save-data movement does not guarantee complete software compatibility on Switch 2.
- You are considering a full migration for one title: Stop and review the individual transfer option first. System Transfer affects broader console information and has source-initialization or source-removal consequences.
After the save arrives
Launch the Resident Evil software on Switch 2 and choose the same user whose save was transferred. Load the expected file and check recognizable progress rather than relying only on the title appearing in the menu. If the target had an existing save, make sure you are looking at the intended version.
Once the result is confirmed, remember that future play on Switch 2 changes that destination save. If you later need to move it again, the same individual-save process can be used when both consoles are available, subject to Nintendo’s compatibility and account requirements. A cloud route remains dependent on the title’s Save Data Cloud support and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Do I need the same Nintendo Account on both consoles?
Yes. The relevant user on the original Switch and the user receiving the data on Switch 2 must be linked to the same Nintendo Account for the nearby transfer.
Is Nintendo Switch Online required to transfer a save directly?
No. Nintendo Switch Online is not required for the nearby-console Transfer Your Save Data feature. It is required for Save Data Cloud, provided the particular game supports that service.
Can I transfer a Resident Evil save if I only have Switch 2?
Only if a compatible Save Data Cloud backup exists for the exact game and user, and the Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Without the old console or an eligible cloud backup, these instructions cannot create missing save data.

Will the original save remain on my old Switch?
No. Nintendo’s nearby transfer moves the selected save and removes it from the source console. It does not leave a second copy there.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if Switch 2 already has a newer save?
Do not accept the overwrite prompt unless the incoming save is the one you want. Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered, so compare the progress before proceeding.
Does every Resident Evil game support Save Data Cloud?
Do not assume so. Cloud eligibility is title-specific. Check the exact release’s product information or its Save Data Cloud menu before relying on a cloud download.
Can I use System Transfer for just Resident Evil?
You can, but it is usually unnecessary for one save. System Transfer is a broader migration performed during Switch 2 setup. The individual Transfer Your Save Data menu is more targeted.
Will transferring the save make every Resident Evil release compatible with Switch 2?
No. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible Nintendo Switch games but cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Verify the individual release if you encounter a software problem.

Does buying Switch 2 automatically move my saves?
No. You must choose an individual save transfer, a supported cloud download, or a broader System Transfer. Simply owning the destination console does not select or move a Resident Evil save.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to move one Resident Evil save?
With both consoles available, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data. It does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it removes the save from the original Switch.
Can I keep playing the same save on both consoles?
The nearby transfer is a move, not a copy, so the source save is removed. Cloud downloads can also replace an existing target save.

Check the exact game’s Save Data Cloud support, the active Nintendo Switch Online membership, the Nintendo Account, and the selected user. A backup must already exist.
Should I choose System Transfer instead?
Choose it only when you want a broader console migration during Switch 2 setup. For one Resident Evil save, the individual transfer menu is the more targeted option.
The Bottom Line
When both systems are available, connect them to the internet, link the same Nintendo Account users, and use Transfer Your Save Data on the original Switch and Receive Save Data on Switch 2. No Nintendo Switch Online membership is required, but the save leaves the source console. If the old system is unavailable, use Save Data Cloud only after confirming that the exact Resident Evil release supports it and that you have an active membership; downloading can overwrite the destination save.
