Transferring a Pokémon to Professor Willow is permanent. Pokémon GO says you cannot get a transferred Pokémon back, so treat the final confirmation as an irreversible deletion of that Pokémon from your collection. From the Map View, open the Main Menu, choose Pokémon, select a Pokémon, open its Pokémon menu, and tap Transfer. You receive Candy in exchange, but the Pokémon itself cannot be recovered.
The safest approach is to inspect each Pokémon first, mark anything worth keeping as a favorite, and review the complete selection before confirming a batch transfer. This guide explains the exact process, the built-in safeguards and restrictions, and why sending a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME or trading it is not the same as transferring it to Professor Willow.
What “Transfer” means in Pokémon GO
A transfer sends a Pokémon from your Pokémon storage to Professor Willow. Once the transfer completes, that Pokémon is removed from Pokémon GO permanently. Niantic’s Help Center states that “you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.” There is no documented recovery window or undo command.

The game gives you Candy in exchange for a transfer. Candy can be useful for powering up or evolving other Pokémon, but it does not preserve the transferred Pokémon, its moves, its appraisal, its costume, or any other property. Decide that the Pokémon is expendable before selecting the command, not after.

Transfer, Pokémon HOME, and trading are different actions

If your goal is to give a Pokémon to another person, use trading when the Pokémon and both players meet the trading requirements. If your goal is to keep it outside Pokémon GO, consider HOME only after checking eligibility and the one-way consequences. Neither option can restore a Pokémon already transferred to Professor Willow.
Before you transfer: a safety check that prevents mistakes
Storage pressure can make a transfer feel routine, especially when many duplicates are visible together. Use a deliberate check for every individual Pokémon and for every batch.
1. Identify why the Pokémon might matter
Open the Pokémon’s detail screen and look at the information you normally use to make retention decisions. Check its species, form, CP, appraisal, moves, evolution stage, and any event or costume details that matter to your collection. Review labels and personal notes if you use them to record raid teams, PvP roles, regional catches, or future evolution plans.

A lower-CP Pokémon may be reserved for a particular league, evolution requirement, collection goal, or trade. If you cannot explain why you would never need that specific Pokémon again, leave it in storage until you can.
2. Favorite anything you are keeping
Favoriting is a useful in-app guardrail: the documented transfer process will not let you transfer a favorited Pokémon. Apply the favorite before you begin a cleanup session, then verify that the favorite indicator is present when you inspect the details.
Favoriting is not a substitute for reviewing a batch. It protects the Pokémon through the transfer restriction, but you should still check the final selected set because a valuable Pokémon can be overlooked for other reasons, such as an important form or a note that you did not recognize.
3. Check whether the Pokémon is blocked for another reason
Some Pokémon cannot be transferred while they are being used by the game. You cannot transfer:

- your active Buddy Pokémon;
- a favorited Pokémon; or
- a Pokémon currently defending a Gym.
These restrictions are safeguards, not evidence that the Pokémon is safe to delete later. If a Pokémon is defending a Gym, for example, it may become transferable after it returns; make your keep-or-transfer decision then.
4. Separate “storage cleanup” from “destination choice”
Before tapping Transfer, decide whether you really want the Pokémon gone or whether you want it somewhere else. Transfer is for removal and Candy. HOME is for moving an eligible Pokémon to a separate service. Trading is for giving a Pokémon to a nearby player. Choosing the wrong destination cannot be corrected by reversing the transfer.
How to transfer one Pokémon safely
Use the individual method when the Pokémon has any possibility of being important or when you are unfamiliar with the current interface.
- From the Map View, open the Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon to open your Pokémon list.
- Select the Pokémon you want to evaluate.
- Inspect its details, labels, notes, and status. Confirm that it is not something you intend to keep, trade, or send to HOME.
- Open the Pokémon’s menu and choose Transfer.
- Read the confirmation prompt. Continue only when you accept that the Pokémon cannot be recovered.
The exact wording and placement of a confirmation control can change with an app update, but the decision is the same: once confirmed, the transfer is final. If you hesitate, close the prompt and keep the Pokémon while you investigate its value.
What you receive
Pokémon GO gives you Candy for a completed transfer. The Candy is the compensation for releasing the Pokémon; it is not a token that allows a later recovery. Record or screenshot any information you need before confirming, because the transferred Pokémon’s details will no longer be available in your Pokémon storage.
How to transfer multiple Pokémon at once
Batch transfer is faster for genuine duplicates, but it increases the cost of a single selection error. Use it only after you have made your keepers unmistakable.
- Open the Pokémon list through Main Menu → Pokémon.
- Press and hold the first Pokémon until it becomes selected.
- Tap each additional Pokémon you want to include.
- Review the selected group. Look for a keeper that slipped into the selection, an unexpected form, or a Pokémon you intended to trade or send to HOME.
- Tap Transfer and confirm only after the review is complete.
Do not treat the first long-press as a confirmation. It begins a selection; the irreversible action happens when you confirm the transfer. If the set is large, review it in smaller groups instead of selecting everything that appears in a search result.

Batch-transfer restrictions
Batch transfer has rules beyond the normal favorite, Buddy, and Gym restrictions.

Some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon cannot be selected for transfer at all. The official help material names Mew and Celebi as examples. If the app prevents selection, do not try to work around the restriction with a different menu; it is an eligibility rule.
A practical storage-cleanup workflow
When you need to free a large amount of space, separate evaluation from deletion. This keeps a rushed storage problem from becoming a permanent collection mistake.
Pass 1: protect clear keepers
- Favorite Pokémon you definitely want to retain.
- Keep active Buddies and Gym defenders in a separate mental category until their status changes.
- Check event costumes, unusual forms, and personal labels before marking anything as expendable.
- Identify Pokémon intended for trading or HOME rather than Professor Willow.
Pass 2: create a transfer group
Use the Pokémon list to find obvious duplicates or other candidates, then inspect each candidate’s details. If your labels or notes identify the reason to keep a Pokémon, remove it from the transfer group. A candidate belongs in the group only when you have made a positive decision to release it; “I do not remember why I kept this” is not a positive decision.
Pass 3: review the final selection
Before confirmation, pause and scan the entire selected set. Check species, forms, Shinies, Lucky status, costumes, and any label that signals a future use. This review is especially important when a list contains similar-looking Pokémon or when you selected many at once.

Pass 4: confirm and verify the result
Confirm the transfer only after the review. The Pokémon should disappear from your storage and the game should award Candy. If you are unsure whether the transfer completed, check your storage and Candy total rather than tapping Transfer again on another selection.
Why a favorite cannot be transferred
Favoriting is designed to prevent accidental releases. A favorited Pokémon is excluded from the documented transfer action, so the game requires you to remove that protection before it can become a transfer candidate. This extra step creates a deliberate pause between “I want to keep this” and “I want to release this.”

If you cannot transfer a Pokémon because it is favorited, return to its details and decide whether the favorite is intentional. Removing the favorite does not itself transfer the Pokémon; it only makes a later transfer possible. After removing it, perform the same evaluation you would perform for any other Pokémon.

Pokémon HOME uses a separate in-app process. First link your Pokémon GO account to Pokémon HOME. Then select the HOME option and use the GO Transporter. The Transporter requires energy, and the amount depends on the Pokémon.

Niantic says a Pokémon sent to HOME cannot return to Pokémon GO. After the transfer, the receiving Pokémon must be accepted in Pokémon HOME before it appears in one of that service’s Boxes. Do not choose HOME as a temporary holding area if you expect to bring the Pokémon back into GO.
Pokémon that cannot be sent to HOME
Eligibility is narrower than many players expect. The documented exclusions include:
- favorited Pokémon;
- Buddy Pokémon;
- Pokémon defending Gyms;
- costumed Pokémon;
- Shadow Pokémon; and
- Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
Check the send screen for the specific Pokémon before committing. The app may also show consequences for a form or status. The confirmation screen indicates whether a Pokémon will change form.
Status and form changes
Lucky and Purified Pokémon lose those statuses when sent to HOME. Some forms can change as part of the move, and the confirmation screen identifies whether a change will occur. If a Lucky or Purified status is part of your collection goal, sending the Pokémon to HOME does not preserve that status.
These consequences make HOME a destination decision, not a backup mechanism. Compare the Pokémon’s eligibility, the Transporter energy requirement, the one-way movement, and any form or status change before confirming.

Is trading a safer alternative?
Trading is separate from transferring. It requires the two players to be physically near one another, and the received Pokémon can have different CP, HP, and other stats. Certain Pokémon cannot be traded; the official trading guidance gives Mythical Pokémon such as Mew and previously traded Pokémon as examples.
A trade can move a Pokémon to another player, but it is not a recovery method. Once you have transferred the Pokémon to Professor Willow, another player cannot trade it back to you because it no longer exists in your Pokémon GO storage. If your real intention is to give the Pokémon away, arrange the trade before considering transfer.
Troubleshooting common transfer problems
“Transfer” is unavailable
Check whether the Pokémon is favorited, your active Buddy, or defending a Gym. Those statuses block the documented transfer process. Some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi as named examples, may be ineligible altogether.
I cannot transfer several Legendary or Mythical Pokémon
Multiple Legendary or Mythical transfers require the relevant setting to be enabled. Open the app’s settings and look for the option governing transfers of these categories. Enable it only when you understand that the batch will still be permanent, then return to the Pokémon list and repeat the selection process.
The game will not let me batch-transfer Shinies or Lucky Pokémon
That behavior is expected under the documented restrictions. Multiple Shiny Pokémon and multiple Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred at one time. Process any such Pokémon individually, with a full detail check and a separate confirmation.
I sent a Pokémon to HOME but cannot see it there
Sending and receiving are separate steps. Pokémon HOME must accept the incoming Pokémon before it appears in a HOME Box. Check HOME for a pending receipt and confirm that the linked account is the one you intended to use. The Pokémon cannot return to Pokémon GO while you resolve the receipt.
I transferred the wrong Pokémon
There is no documented undo or recovery process for a completed transfer. Check that the Pokémon is truly absent from storage, but do not expect support or a later menu to restore it. The only available result of the transfer is the Candy awarded by the game; the original Pokémon cannot be recovered.
Final pre-confirmation checklist
Use this short checklist immediately before any transfer, especially a batch:
- Have I opened the correct Pokémon and checked its form, status, labels, and notes?
- Is it definitely not a Pokémon I want to keep for collection, evolution, PvP, raids, or a planned trade?
- Is Professor Willow really the intended destination, rather than Pokémon HOME or another player?
- For a batch, have I reviewed every selected Pokémon instead of assuming the group is safe?
- Do I accept that the transfer is permanent and that only Candy will be returned?
If any answer is uncertain, cancel the operation and leave the Pokémon in storage. Storage management can wait; a completed transfer cannot be reversed.
