Favorite every Pokémon you intend to keep before transferring anything. Pokémon GO blocks transfers of favorited Pokémon, but a transfer you confirm is permanent: Niantic says the Pokémon cannot be recovered. For the lowest risk, use the single-Pokémon transfer flow when you are uncertain, and inspect every Pokémon in a bulk selection before confirming.
What a Pokémon GO transfer actually does
The ordinary Transfer command sends a Pokémon to Professor Willow. You receive Candy and the Pokémon leaves your Pokémon storage. This is different from moving a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME, which is a separate service flow with its own restrictions and no route back to Pokémon GO.
Transfer is not a temporary archive, trade, or recycle bin. Niantic’s Pokémon GO Help Center states that “you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.” Treat the final confirmation as permanent, even if you transferred the wrong Pokémon or changed your mind seconds later.
The safest sequence before you transfer
- Mark keepers as Favorited. Open each Pokémon you want to retain and use the Favoriting control on its detail screen before you start sorting. Niantic’s documented rule is that favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred.
- Separate uncertain Pokémon from the discard group. If you are still deciding whether a Pokémon is useful, leave it out of the transfer rather than relying on memory during a large selection.
- Check special categories. Look for an active Buddy, a Gym defender, Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, Shiny Pokémon, Lucky Pokémon, and Pokémon at Good Buddy status or above. These categories affect which transfer options are available.
- Choose single or bulk transfer deliberately. Single transfer gives you one final review. Bulk transfer is faster for clearly unwanted Pokémon but makes a mistaken selection easier to overlook.
- Read the confirmation screen. Confirm only after the number and identity of the selected Pokémon match your intention. Once you confirm, there is no in-game undo command.
Favoriting is the primary in-game safety lock. It does not replace a review: a Pokémon that is not favorited remains eligible for transfer, including one you may have intended to keep.

How to transfer one Pokémon safely
Use this route when a Pokémon has sentimental value, unusual stats, a rare form, or any other reason you would regret losing it.
- From the Map View, open the Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon to open your Pokémon list.
- Select the Pokémon you intend to transfer.
- Open that Pokémon’s Menu.
- Choose Transfer.
- Review the warning and confirmation details, then confirm only if the selected Pokémon is definitely the one you want to send to Professor Willow.
If the Pokémon is Favorited, is your active Buddy, or is defending a Gym, the game prevents the transfer under Niantic’s documented restrictions. Those blocks are useful safeguards, but they should not be treated as a substitute for favoriting every keeper.
How to transfer several Pokémon at once
Bulk transfer is useful when you have a group that you have already reviewed, such as clearly unwanted duplicates. The selection gesture is different from the single-Pokémon flow.
- Open the Pokémon list from Main Menu > Pokémon.
- Tap and hold one Pokémon until it becomes selected.
- Tap each additional Pokémon you intend to include.
- Before continuing, inspect the complete selected group. Remove any Pokémon you are not completely certain about by tapping it again, or abandon the bulk operation and use the single-Pokémon flow instead.
- Tap Transfer.
- Read the confirmation prompt and confirm only when every selected Pokémon is expendable.
The transfer is irreversible after confirmation. A large selection saves time, but the game’s documented flow does not provide a recovery step for an accidental selection. The practical safety rule is simple: never confirm a bulk transfer without checking the entire selected group.
Single transfer versus bulk transfer

Neither method can transfer a Favorited Pokémon. The difference is how much selection you must verify before the irreversible confirmation.
Transfer restrictions and special cases
Niantic’s help guidance distinguishes between Pokémon that cannot be transferred at all through the documented flow and categories that cannot be transferred multiple at once. Keeping that distinction prevents an overly broad assumption about what the game permits.
Pokémon blocked from transfer
- Favorited Pokémon: A Favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred.
- Your active Buddy: The active Buddy cannot be transferred. If you are trying to clear storage, select a different Pokémon rather than assuming the Buddy is available.
- Gym defenders: A Pokémon currently defending a Gym cannot be transferred.
- Certain Legendary and Mythical Pokémon: Niantic’s help page says certain Pokémon in these categories, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected for transfer.
Categories restricted during multi-transfer
- Legendary and Mythical Pokémon: To transfer multiple Pokémon from these categories, first enable the relevant option in the app’s settings. The setting is a deliberate extra confirmation because of the value players commonly place on these Pokémon.
- Shiny Pokémon: Niantic says you cannot transfer multiple Shiny Pokémon at a time. That statement concerns the bulk operation; do not turn it into a claim that one Shiny Pokémon can never be transferred.
- Lucky Pokémon: Multiple Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred at once. Again, this is a restriction on multi-transfer.
- Good Buddy status or above: You cannot transfer multiple Pokémon at Good Buddy status or higher in one operation. The restriction is specifically about transferring multiple such Pokémon together.
If a Pokémon does not appear selectable, check whether one of these conditions applies. Do not try to work around a warning by selecting a larger group; switch to a permitted, individually reviewed operation when the game allows it.
What to do when Pokémon storage is full
An orange-dot indicator in Pokémon GO can mean that either Pokémon storage or the Item Bag is full. If the full category is Pokémon storage, Niantic lists two remedies: transfer Pokémon or purchase a storage upgrade in the in-game Shop.

Storage expansion is an in-game purchase, not a physical product or an external service. If you are full because of Pokémon you may later value, upgrading storage avoids forcing an irreversible transfer while you decide. Check the Shop’s current listing for the price and the amount of capacity offered, since those details can change.
Also confirm that the orange dot refers to Pokémon storage rather than the Item Bag. Buying or using an Item Bag solution will not create Pokémon slots, and transferring Pokémon will not resolve an Item Bag limit. Identifying the full category first prevents an unnecessary deletion.
Professor Willow transfers are not Pokémon HOME transfers
Do not confuse the normal Transfer command with sending a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME.

Transfer to Professor Willow
This is the standard in-game storage action described above. The Pokémon leaves Pokémon GO, you receive Candy, and the Pokémon cannot be recovered.
Send from Pokémon GO to Pokémon HOME
Niantic’s Pokémon HOME guidance describes a separate outbound process. Pokémon sent from GO to HOME cannot be sent back to GO. The guidance also lists Favorited Pokémon among those that cannot be sent through this path, and says the confirmation screen indicates whether a Pokémon’s form changes during the journey.
Therefore, a Pokémon that is safe from an accidental Professor Willow transfer because it is Favorited is not automatically eligible for HOME transfer. Check the applicable confirmation screen and restrictions for the destination you are using.
These two actions solve different problems. Professor Willow transfer is a permanent way to reduce Pokémon GO storage and receive Candy. HOME is a one-way move out of GO for compatible Pokémon, not a backup system for restoring a mistaken Willow transfer. If your goal is simply to make room, do not choose HOME assuming it creates an archive you can later return to GO.

Can you transfer a Favorited Pokémon?
No. Under Niantic’s documented Pokémon GO transfer rules, Favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred. If the Transfer command is unavailable for a Pokémon you marked to keep, check that you are viewing the intended Pokémon and that you are not confusing the standard transfer flow with another destination such as Pokémon HOME.

Favoriting does not restore a Pokémon that was already transferred. It protects the Pokémon before the transfer; it is not an undo history. You can remove the Favorite status later if you deliberately decide to transfer that Pokémon, so treat un-favoriting as a separate decision that deserves the same review.
Can you get a Pokémon back after transferring it?
No recovery option is documented for an ordinary Pokémon GO transfer. Niantic explicitly says that you cannot get Pokémon back after transferring them. Candy awarded by the transfer does not create a restoration record, and changing your mind after confirmation does not reverse the action.
If you transferred a Pokémon by mistake, you can contact Pokémon GO support, but the available guidance does not establish that support will restore a transferred Pokémon or make an exception. Do not wait for a support response before treating the Pokémon as permanently gone.
How to contact Pokémon GO support
Niantic says the in-app support system is generally the best way to contact Pokémon GO support.
- Open the Main Menu from the Map View.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Help.
Use this route for a transfer-related question, a restriction you do not understand, or an account issue. Describe what happened accurately, including whether the action was a transfer to Professor Willow or a send operation involving Pokémon HOME. The published support guidance does not promise recovery, so keep your expectations limited to getting assistance and an explanation.
Menu labels can shift after an app update, but the support path remains under the game’s Main Menu and Settings. If you cannot find a transfer article, use the in-app help search and explain the exact action and approximate time. Avoid claiming that a restoration is guaranteed; the documented rule is that completed transfers cannot be recovered.
A repeatable storage-cleanup routine
For regular cleanup, use a routine that makes the irreversible step the last and smallest decision.

- Favorite keepers. Mark anything you intend to retain, including Pokémon you are keeping for reasons that are not obvious from their species or combat role.
- Check protected states. Identify the active Buddy, Gym defenders, and special categories that have bulk-transfer rules.
- Create a narrow discard group. Include only Pokémon you can confidently identify as unwanted. If one entry makes you hesitate, leave it out.
- Use bulk transfer only for the verified group. Press and hold to select, tap the remaining entries, and inspect the full selection.
- Confirm once. Read the warning and submit the transfer only after the selection is correct.
- Recheck storage. If the orange indicator remains, determine whether Pokémon storage or the Item Bag is full before taking another action.
This routine separates judgment from the destructive action. It also means a storage warning does not pressure you into making a permanent decision about a Pokémon you have not reviewed.

Common mistakes and the safer response
“I selected a whole page and assumed my favorites were included.”
Favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred, but selection behavior should never be assumed. Inspect the selected entries and verify that every intended discard is present before confirming.
“I transferred it and expected an undo button.”
There is no documented undo or recovery for a completed transfer. Treat the confirmation as final and contact in-app support only if you need assistance, without assuming restoration is available.
“The game will not let me transfer several special Pokémon.”
Check whether the group contains Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-and-above Pokémon. Multi-transfer has additional restrictions, and Legendary or Mythical multi-transfer requires enabling the relevant setting first.
“My storage is full, so I transferred something I had not reviewed.”
Stop and review before confirming. Niantic lists a storage upgrade in the in-game Shop as an alternative when Pokémon storage is full. The upgrade lets you postpone a permanent decision.
“I meant to send the Pokémon to HOME.”
Stop before confirming and identify which flow you are using. A HOME send is separate from Professor Willow transfer, cannot send the Pokémon back to GO, and has its own eligibility and form-change information on the confirmation screen.
“A Pokémon is not selectable, so I assumed it was Favorited.”
Several conditions can block selection, including an active Buddy, a Gym defender, or a special Legendary or Mythical restriction. Open the Pokémon’s details and check its status instead of relying on the selection result as proof that it is protected for every possible action.
Final pre-transfer checklist
- Every Pokémon I want to keep is Favorited.
- The Pokémon is not my active Buddy or a Gym defender.
- I know whether I am sending it to Professor Willow or using the separate HOME flow.
- I have checked the special-category restrictions for a bulk transfer.
- I have inspected every selected Pokémon, not just the first one.
- I understand that the confirmation is irreversible.
- If storage is the only pressure, I have considered the in-game storage upgrade before discarding anything uncertain.
If all seven checks are true, confirm the transfer. If even one is uncertain, cancel the selection and review the Pokémon individually.

Can you transfer a favorited Pokémon in Pokémon GO?
No. Niantic says favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred. Favorite keepers before sorting, and remember that favoriting protects a Pokémon only before a transfer; it cannot restore one already sent to Professor Willow.

Can I get a Pokémon back after transferring it?
No recovery or undo option is documented. Niantic states that you cannot get Pokémon back after transferring them, so treat the confirmation as permanent. You may contact in-app support, but restoration is not promised.
How do I transfer multiple Pokémon safely?
In the Pokémon list, tap and hold one Pokémon, tap the others, inspect the complete selection, then tap Transfer and confirm. Deselect anything uncertain or use the single-Pokémon flow instead.
Why can’t I transfer several Shiny or Lucky Pokémon?
Niantic restricts multi-transfer of Shiny Pokémon, Lucky Pokémon, and Pokémon at Good Buddy status or above. This does not mean that every individual Pokémon in those categories is permanently untransferable.

What is the difference between Transfer and Pokémon HOME?
