You cannot move a Pokémon directly from a Game Boy Advance cartridge into Pokémon HOME or a current Switch game. The documented route is Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen → Pal Park in a compatible Generation IV game → Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, or White 2 → Poké Transporter → Pokémon Bank → Pokémon HOME → an eligible newer game. It requires legacy hardware, several handoffs, and irreversible decisions. Pokémon Bank currently lists its service end as February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. PST, so anyone planning this journey should verify the current official notice and allow time to finish the move.

The transfer route at a glance

Think of this as a chain of storage systems rather than one transfer. Each stage accepts only particular games, and a Pokémon must pass through every stage in order.

Stage What you use What happens
1. GBA to Generation IV One of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen; a Nintendo DS-family system with a GBA Game Pak slot; a compatible Generation IV game Use Pal Park to migrate selected Pokémon, then catch them in the Generation IV game
2. Generation IV to Generation V A Generation IV game and Black, White, Black 2, or White 2 Use the Generation V game’s Poké Transfer facility
3. Generation V to Bank Black, White, Black 2, or White 2; Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter on a compatible 3DS-family system Transporter sends supported Pokémon into Bank
4. Bank to HOME Pokémon HOME Premium and the Nintendo Account/Nintendo Network ID arrangement required by your setup Move boxes from Bank into HOME; the move is one-way
5. HOME to a newer game A game shown as compatible for each individual Pokémon Deposit or withdraw the Pokémon only where HOME marks it as eligible

What you need before starting

  • Original cartridge: Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen. The documented Pal Park procedure names these five games.
  • DS hardware with the correct slot: The first handoff needs a Nintendo DS system that has a physical GBA Game Pak slot. A Nintendo DS Lite is an example of the required form factor; confirm the slot on the exact console you buy or borrow.
  • Generation IV software: The Pokémon Platinum manual documents the complete Pal Park procedure and names all five compatible GBA games. If you use another Generation IV title, check that title’s own manual for its menu wording and restrictions rather than assuming Platinum’s instructions are identical.
  • Generation V software: Pokémon Black, White, Black Version 2, or White Version 2 are the titles accepted by Poké Transporter.
  • 3DS-family access: You need Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter available on a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system, with the relevant account state already working. Compatibility documentation does not guarantee that a user can newly download either application today.
  • Pokémon HOME: The Bank-to-HOME operation requires a paid HOME Premium Plan. Nintendo Switch Online is not required for this particular HOME function.
  • Accounts: HOME uses a Nintendo Account. If you perform the move without a 3DS, Pokémon Support requires linking the Nintendo Network ID associated with Bank to the Nintendo Account used by HOME.

Step 1: Migrate the Pokémon from GBA to Pal Park

Prepare the Pokémon on the GBA cartridge

The Platinum manual requires the Generation IV game to have the National Pokédex before the migration option becomes available. Make sure the Pokémon you intend to send are in the party or PC in a state the game can select, and remove anything that makes a Pokémon ineligible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pokémon holding Mail cannot migrate.
  • Pokémon that know a hidden move cannot migrate. Replace the move before beginning if you want that Pokémon to make the trip.
  • Platinum limits the procedure to six Pokémon from one GBA Game Pak in a 24-hour period. This is a Platinum manual rule, not a universal claim about every Generation IV game.

Perform the Pal Park migration in Platinum

  1. Insert the GBA Game Pak into the GBA slot of the Nintendo DS system.
  2. Insert the Generation IV game card into the DS card slot and start the game.
  3. After the National Pokédex requirement is met, choose “Migrate From” on the Platinum start menu.
  4. Select up to six eligible Pokémon from the inserted GBA Game Pak.
  5. Read the confirmation carefully. Confirming migration removes those Pokémon from the original GBA cartridge; they are not returned to it.
  6. Restart the Generation IV game as instructed, enter Pal Park, and catch the migrated Pokémon there.

Pal Park is not a temporary link to the cartridge. Once you confirm the migration, the original save no longer contains those Pokémon, so check names, moves, held items, and the number selected before accepting.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the migration option is missing

  • Check that the game has the National Pokédex.
  • Confirm that the console really has a GBA Game Pak slot. Systems without that slot cannot read the cartridge for this step.
  • Verify that the inserted cartridge is Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen.
  • Remove Mail and replace any hidden move before trying again.
  • If you have already migrated six Pokémon, wait for the 24-hour window described in the Platinum manual.

Step 2: Move the Pokémon from Generation IV to Generation V

After catching the Pokémon in the Generation IV game, continue through the game’s Poké Transfer facility to a compatible Generation V title. The documented destination titles are Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2.

A scan of the Pokémon Black manual identifies the Poké Transfer Lab on Route 15 and a National Pokédex requirement. Because the available scan is a third-party copy and menu details can vary by version, use it as a general orientation and verify the exact unlock conditions and prompts in the manual for your own Generation V game.

What to verify before this handoff

  • Your Generation V game is one of the four titles accepted by Poké Transporter later.
  • The Generation V National Pokédex and any in-game prerequisites required by that version are complete.
  • The Pokémon are in the Generation IV game, not still on the GBA cartridge.
  • You understand the transfer rules shown by the Generation V facility before confirming them.

This is a game-to-game transfer step. It is not a way to put a GBA cartridge into a 3DS, Pokémon Bank, HOME, or a current Switch title.

Step 3: Send Generation V Pokémon through Poké Transporter to Bank

Nintendo’s compatibility list names Black, White, Black Version 2, and White Version 2 as Poké Transporter source games. Once the Pokémon are in one of those games, Transporter can move supported Pokémon into Pokémon Bank.

Generation V game Accepted as a Poké Transporter source?
Pokémon Black Yes
Pokémon White Yes
Pokémon Black Version 2 Yes
Pokémon White Version 2 Yes

The list does not describe a direct GBA-cartridge connection. The GBA Pokémon must already have passed through Pal Park and the Generation IV-to-V transfer before Transporter is relevant.

Service-access caution

Bank and Transporter are legacy 3DS services. The compatibility page documents which games they support, but it does not establish that every account can newly download the applications now. Before buying hardware or a cartridge for this project, confirm that the needed apps are installed and that your account can open them.

Step 4: Move Pokémon Bank boxes into Pokémon HOME

Pokémon Support requires a paid Pokémon HOME Premium Plan for a Bank-to-HOME move. This is the point at which the Pokémon leave the 3DS service, so decide on your HOME organization and intended games before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transfer with a Nintendo 3DS

  1. Open Pokémon HOME and choose the function to move Pokémon from Pokémon Bank.
  2. HOME displays a temporary Moving Key.
  3. On the 3DS, open Pokémon Bank, select the boxes to move, and begin the transfer.
  4. Enter the Moving Key from HOME in Bank before it expires. Pokémon Support gives the key a three-minute validity period.
  5. Wait for the transfer to complete, then check the boxes in HOME.

Transfer without a 3DS

Pokémon Support also describes a no-3DS option. Link the Nintendo Network ID used with Bank to the Nintendo Account used with HOME, then start the move from HOME. This method moves all Pokémon in Bank at once rather than letting you choose individual boxes, so review the contents and account linkage first.

The one-way warning

Pokémon moved from Bank to HOME cannot be moved back to Bank. Do not plan on returning them to a Nintendo 3DS Pokémon game after this handoff.

Step 5: Check whether a newer Pokémon game accepts each Pokémon

Being in HOME does not make a Pokémon usable in every linked game. Compatibility is checked per Pokémon and per destination title.

  1. Open the Pokémon HOME mobile app and inspect the Pokémon’s “Games it can travel to” section, or use the connected-games view on Switch.
  2. Look for the specific game you want to play.
  3. If the game is grayed out, that Pokémon cannot be used there through HOME.
  4. Check every important Pokémon before moving a whole box or purchasing a destination game.

This check matters even when two games are connected to HOME. A species, form, move set, or game-specific rule can make one Pokémon eligible for one title but not another. HOME’s individual display is the authoritative planning screen for your account and current software.

Common failure points and practical fixes

The DS cannot see the GBA cartridge

A DS model without a GBA Game Pak slot cannot perform Pal Park. Use a compatible DS-family system and make sure the cartridge is fully seated. A 3DS, Switch, or a modern DS model without that slot is not a substitute for this first handoff.

Pal Park rejects a selected Pokémon

Look for Mail or a hidden move. Remove the held Mail and replace the move in the GBA game, then try again. Also check that you have not reached Platinum’s six-Pokémon-per-24-hour limit.

“Migrate From” is unavailable

The Platinum procedure requires the National Pokédex. Confirm that requirement and the cartridge combination before troubleshooting the console.

Poké Transporter will not accept the game

Transporter is documented for Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. A Pokémon still in a GBA or Generation IV game has not reached the correct stage. Move it into a listed Generation V title first.

You do not have a 3DS available for the Bank move

Use the no-3DS process only after confirming that the Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account are correctly linked. That route moves every Pokémon in Bank, not a hand-picked selection.

A Pokémon is in HOME but unavailable in the target game

Open the mobile app’s “Games it can travel to” view or the Switch connected-games view. A grayed-out destination means the Pokémon cannot be used there; choose an eligible game rather than attempting repeated transfers.

Plan around the Pokémon Bank shutdown

The current Pokémon Bank service page states that service will end on Thursday, February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. PST. It also says Bank-to-HOME transfers will no longer be possible after that point. Treat the displayed time zone and wording as authoritative for planning, and recheck the official Bank page because service dates can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm Bank and Poké Transporter access before buying or borrowing the remaining hardware.
  2. Complete Pal Park and the Generation IV-to-V transfer well before the deadline; the six-per-24-hour Platinum limit can make a large collection take several days.
  3. Move the Generation V Pokémon into Bank, organize the boxes, and verify your HOME account linkage.
  4. Start the Premium Bank-to-HOME transfer early enough to resolve account or service problems before the stated cutoff.
  5. After arrival in HOME, check destination eligibility before opening a newer game and attempting to withdraw anything.

What this process can and cannot do

  • It can: carry eligible Pokémon from the five named GBA games through Pal Park, a compatible Generation IV title, a listed Generation V title, Bank, and HOME, provided you have the required hardware, software, accounts, and service access.
  • It cannot: read a GBA cartridge directly with HOME, Bank, a 3DS, or a current Switch game.
  • It cannot: restore Pokémon to the original GBA cartridge after Pal Park migration.
  • It cannot: reverse a completed Bank-to-HOME move.
  • It cannot: guarantee that every Pokémon in HOME can enter every newer release; use HOME’s per-Pokémon compatibility display.
