You can move a disc game’s data to a new PlayStation, but the transfer does not turn the game into a digital copy. To install and play a disc-based game, use a compatible destination console with a disc drive and insert the original game disc. For a PS4-to-PS5 or PS5-to-PS5 move, Sony’s same-network Data Transfer process is the most direct option when you still have the old console.
What transfers—and what does not
Console Data Transfer copies game data and other selected content to the new console. A disc-based game’s license remains tied to its disc: after transferring data, insert that game disc in the destination console to install the game, and keep it inserted when you play. The transfer does not create a digital license or remove the need for the disc. Sony’s transfer instructions explain the installation step.
Saved progress is separate from the game’s installed data. Sony supports moving saves during console transfer, using PlayStation Plus cloud storage, and copying PS4 saves to a USB drive. PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB. The available route depends on whether the save is from a PS4 or PS5 and whether you have access to the old console or cloud storage.
Choose a transfer method
| Method | Best for | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Console-to-console Data Transfer | Moving from PS4 to PS5 or from one PS5 to another when the old console is available | Connect both consoles to the same network and follow the destination console’s prompts. You can transfer game data and supported other content; a disc is still required for a disc-based game. |
| USB extended storage | Making game data already stored on an external drive available on the destination console | PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games stored there must be moved to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing. |
| Cloud storage or USB save copying | Moving saved progress rather than installed game data | PlayStation Plus cloud storage is an option for members. PS4 saves can also be copied to a compatible USB drive; PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB. |
| Reinstall from disc | Installing a disc-based game when you do not have the old console or transferred game data | Insert the original disc into a destination console with a disc drive. The disc must be compatible with that console. |
Transfer PS4 disc games to a PS5
- Prepare the PS4. Sign in on the PS4 with the account you will use on the PS5, install the latest system software, and synchronize trophies.
- Connect both consoles to the same network. A LAN cable can make transfer faster if the consoles would otherwise use Wi-Fi; it is optional, not a requirement.
- Start Data Transfer on the PS5. During initial setup, follow the transfer prompts. If the PS5 is already set up, go to Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Leave the consoles on and connected. Do not power them off or change network settings during the transfer. Sony warns that doing so may damage or lose data.
- Install the disc game. Once the game data is available, insert the original disc into a PS5 with a disc drive and follow any installation prompts. Keep the disc available to play.
- Move saved progress if needed. Choose transfer during the console transfer, retrieve a save from PlayStation Plus cloud storage, or copy a PS4 save with USB. The save does not necessarily move just because the game data does.
Data already saved on the destination PS5 does not transfer over; Sony’s instructions do not describe the process as merging existing destination data. For a child account, Data Transfer cannot be done during the PS5’s initial setup. Finish setup first, or use an adult account during initial setup and transfer both accounts then.

Transfer games from one PS5 to another
Sony supports Data Transfer between PS5 consoles. Sign in to the same account on the destination, connect both consoles to the same network, and follow the destination PS5’s transfer prompts. The process can copy games playable on PS5 as well as saved data, user and account information, screenshots, clips, and console settings. For disc-based games, insert the original disc into the destination console to install and play; the transferred data is not a replacement for the disc.
Use USB extended storage for game data
If your games are already on a USB extended storage drive, connect that drive to the destination console to access its game data. This is different from copying saved progress to a USB drive: the storage guide covers game files, while PS4 save copying is a separate function. Sony’s extended-storage instructions distinguish how PS4 and PS5 games work:

- PS4 games: You can play them directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games: You can store them on USB extended storage, but must move them to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play.
- Saved data: PS4 saves can be copied to compatible USB storage. PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB.
Check disc-drive and game compatibility
The destination hardware must be able to read the disc, and the game must be supported. A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot use PS4 Blu-ray game discs. Sony says more than 4,000 PS4 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5, but that vendor-published count is not a promise that every title works. Sony’s PS5 page describes the Digital Edition as playing digital games only, while its backward-compatibility support page notes that some PS4 games may not be playable on PS5. Check the specific title’s compatibility before relying on it.

If you no longer have the old console
Without the source console, you cannot use console-to-console Data Transfer from it. If you have the game disc and the destination has a compatible disc drive, install the game by inserting the disc. If game data is on a USB extended storage drive, connect it to the destination and follow the console prompts, observing the PS4-versus-PS5 playback limits above. For saved progress, check PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you used it; a PS4 save previously copied to USB can be copied to the new console. PS5 saves have no USB-copy route.

If the transfer or installation does not work
- The PS5 cannot use the disc: Check whether the destination has a disc drive and whether the game is compatible with that console.
- The game data moved but the game will not start: Insert the original disc. A data transfer does not replace the disc-based license.
- The transfer option does not appear: Confirm both consoles are updated, signed into the intended account, and connected to the same network; then use the PS5 path Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue.
- A PS5 game on USB will not launch: Move it to console storage or an M.2 SSD first.
- Saved progress is missing: Check separately for a transferred save, a PlayStation Plus cloud save, or a USB-copied PS4 save. Installed game data alone does not establish that the save transferred.
