The best transfer method depends on the phone you are replacing. From Android, use Apple’s Move to iOS during the iPhone 17 Pro’s initial setup; it can bring over photos, videos, albums, WhatsApp messages and media, contacts, messages, files, calendars and other listed data. From another iPhone, use Quick Start. In both cases, keep the phones close together and connected to power until the transfer finishes.
If the iPhone 17 Pro is already set up, Move to iOS is no longer available without erasing the iPhone. You can either reset it and start again or move content manually.

Preparation prevents the most common failures: an incomplete WhatsApp move, a full destination, or a transfer that stops when one phone sleeps or loses power.

- Make sure the iPhone 17 Pro has enough free storage for the selected data. If the old phone contains more data than the iPhone can hold, remove or archive items before starting.
- On Android, turn on Wi-Fi. Temporarily disabling cellular data can help if the phone keeps switching away from the temporary transfer network.
- Update Chrome on Android if browser bookmarks are important to you.
- Have a USB-C data cable available if you want Apple’s documented wired transfer option. It must carry data, not only power, and its connectors must fit both phones.
- Keep the Android phone unlocked and the Move to iOS app visible. Do not answer calls, switch apps or let either phone go to sleep while data is being copied.
Transfer from Android with Move to iOS
This is the supported all-in-one route for an Android phone moving to an iPhone 17 Pro. Start it while the iPhone is still being configured.

1. Start iPhone setup
- Turn on the iPhone 17 Pro and follow the setup screens until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Choose Set Up Without Another Device (the wording may identify an Apple device), then choose From Android and Transfer with App.
- The iPhone displays a six-digit or ten-digit code. Leave that screen open.
2. Install and connect Move to iOS
- On Android, install and open Apple’s Move to iOS app.
- Accept the terms and grant the permissions it requests.
- Enter the code shown on the iPhone. The iPhone creates a temporary Wi-Fi network; join it when Move to iOS asks.
3. Select what to copy
Choose the content categories you want. Apple lists contacts, message history, SMS messages, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, accessibility settings, display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history and calendars as transferable items. The selection screen can take time to calculate the total, especially when the Android phone contains a large photo library.
4. Let the transfer finish
Keep both phones nearby, charging and untouched. The Android phone may appear finished before the iPhone is done; wait until the iPhone’s progress bar completes. Opening another app, taking a call or moving out of range can interrupt the process.
5. Complete setup and install matched apps
Finish the remaining iPhone setup screens. Some free Android apps are matched only when an equivalent is available in both Google Play and the App Store and supports Apple’s transfer feature. The iOS versions are downloaded from the App Store after migration; Android application files themselves are not copied. Paid apps, Android-only apps and unsupported apps require an iOS equivalent or a separate reinstall decision.

Selection is not an all-or-nothing commitment: choose the categories that fit the iPhone’s available space and your needs. If you omit a category, plan a separate manual move instead of expecting it to appear later. Keep the old phone unchanged until you have checked every category you selected.
Use a USB-C cable for a wired Android transfer
Apple documents connecting the Android phone directly to the iPhone with a USB-C cable as an alternative that can be faster than the temporary wireless network. Connect the phones before or when Move to iOS prompts for a connection, then follow the same code, content-selection and completion steps. Use a known-good data cable; a charge-only cable cannot carry the transfer. Keep both devices powered even when they are physically connected.
A wired connection is most useful when the wireless handoff repeatedly drops or when a large photo and video library makes the temporary network impractical. It does not change the categories Apple supports: you still select content in Move to iOS and wait for the iPhone’s progress bar. If the cable is loose, disconnecting it can interrupt the same way a Wi-Fi interruption does, so avoid moving either phone during the copy.
How to transfer photos and videos
Automatic transfer during setup
Select the photo and video categories in Move to iOS. Camera photos, videos and photo albums are included in Apple’s listed Android transfer content. Leave the devices connected until the iPhone progress bar reaches the end before opening Photos and judging the result.
If automatic migration is unavailable
If you cannot erase the iPhone or Move to iOS will not run, use a computer-based manual method: copy the Android phone’s photos and videos to the computer, then sync or import them to the iPhone using the computer’s supported Apple device workflow. Cloud photo accounts can also be installed and configured on the iPhone so their libraries appear after sign-in. Manual methods require you to verify albums, originals and available iPhone storage yourself; they do not reproduce the single guided migration.

For a manual move, work in batches if the library is large: copy the source files first, confirm that the computer can open them, then import or sync them to the iPhone. Keep the Android originals until you have checked dates, videos and representative albums on the iPhone. A cloud account can show its library after you install its iOS app and sign in, but that is a service-specific sync rather than a complete device migration.
How to transfer WhatsApp chats and media
WhatsApp messages and media are explicitly included in Apple’s transferable-content list. During the Move to iOS selection step, select WhatsApp. Do not open WhatsApp on the iPhone and assume the move failed while the iPhone is still processing data. Keep both phones charging and wait for the complete iPhone progress bar, then finish setup and open WhatsApp on the iPhone to complete its normal sign-in and restoration prompts.
Only the WhatsApp content included in the migration selection is handled by this route. If the transfer is interrupted or the destination runs out of space, repeat the migration after checking storage; a partial result should not be treated as a complete chat history.

If WhatsApp appears empty, first confirm that it was selected, that the iPhone bar reached completion and that the normal account setup on the iPhone was finished. Do not wipe the Android phone until recent and older conversations and media have been inspected.
What happens to Android apps
Move to iOS does not convert Android binaries into iPhone apps. It can identify some free apps when a supported counterpart exists in both stores. Those counterparts are then downloaded from the App Store. Review the App Store downloads after setup and sign in to each service again if required.
- Matched free apps: download their iOS versions from the App Store after migration.
- Paid apps: check whether the developer offers an iOS purchase or subscription; an Android purchase does not automatically install an iOS copy.
- Android-only apps: find an iOS alternative or continue using the old Android phone for that task.
- Unsupported apps: reinstall manually and restore their data using the app maker’s own account or backup system.
Music, books and PDFs are not part of the automatic app-and-data result described above. Move those manually, using the original service or a computer-based file transfer.
Make a short list of essential apps before starting: banking, authentication, messaging, work and travel apps often need a fresh sign-in or a separate restore. The migration can place a matching app in the App Store queue, but it does not guarantee that the app’s private data, Android purchase history or device-specific settings will appear. Test critical apps while the old phone is still available.

Use Quick Start when the old device is an iPhone or iPad. The current device must have iOS 11 or later, Wi-Fi connected and Bluetooth enabled.

- Turn on the iPhone 17 Pro and place it beside the old iPhone.
- Ensure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on and both phones are connected to power.
- When the Quick Start prompt appears on the old phone, follow the onscreen instructions and use the old phone’s camera to authenticate the new one when requested.
- Enter the old device passcode on the iPhone 17 Pro and set up Face ID or other security prompts.
- At the transfer choice, select Transfer Directly from iPhone or download apps and data from iCloud.
- Leave both devices close together and powered until the transfer completes. Direct transfer time varies with the amount of data; the iCloud option also depends on network conditions.
With direct transfer, you cannot use either device normally until the transfer is complete. If the old iPhone is unavailable, an up-to-date iCloud backup is the practical alternative.
Choose direct transfer when both iPhones are present and you want the device-to-device route. Choose the iCloud option when the old phone is not available or when its data is already safely in iCloud. Either way, the amount of data and network conditions affect the wait, so do not interpret a long pause as failure while the devices remain connected and show progress.
If the iPhone 17 Pro is already set up
Reset and run the supported migration
Apple’s Move to iOS workflow is available during initial setup. To use it after setup, erase the iPhone and return it to the Hello screen, then start the Android procedure above. Erasing removes data currently on the iPhone, so copy anything new on it before resetting. After the reset, generate a new transfer code and select the categories again.

Keep the setup and move data manually
If you do not want to erase the iPhone, use manual methods. Sign in to the same mail, calendar, contacts, cloud-storage, photo and messaging services on iOS; copy photos and files through a computer or the service’s own app; reinstall iOS versions of apps individually; and use each app’s supported account or backup restore. This approach avoids a reset but requires separate verification for every category.
A practical manual order is accounts first, then contacts and calendars, followed by photos and files, apps, and finally app-specific data such as WhatsApp. Verify each stage before moving to the next. This makes it easier to identify whether a missing item belongs to the iPhone’s system transfer, a cloud account that has not finished syncing, or an app that requires its own restore process.
Troubleshoot a stalled or incomplete Android transfer
Move to iOS stops, disconnects or reports an error
- Keep Move to iOS on screen on Android and do not switch to another app.
- Turn off cellular data temporarily so Android does not leave the iPhone’s temporary Wi-Fi network.
- Check settings that automatically change Wi-Fi networks or optimize battery usage; pause those features for the migration.
- Restart both phones and begin again with both connected to power.
- Try the direct USB-C connection if wireless transfer repeatedly drops.
Only some content appears
Check which categories were selected and whether the iPhone had enough free storage. A migration is not complete until the iPhone progress bar finishes. For a genuinely interrupted move, reset the iPhone to the Hello screen, start setup again and generate a new six-digit code. If the same category repeatedly fails, move that category manually after setup rather than assuming the missing data is safely present.
The iPhone reports insufficient storage
Stop and compare the selected Android data with the iPhone’s available capacity. Reduce the selection, remove unnecessary downloads or photos from the source, or free space on the destination before retrying. WhatsApp media and video libraries can account for a large share of the required space.
WhatsApp looks empty
Confirm that WhatsApp was selected in Move to iOS, that the iPhone bar completed, and that you are using the same WhatsApp account information on the iPhone. If the migration was interrupted, erase and retry after checking storage; do not rely on a partial transfer.

The code or temporary network does not work
Leave the iPhone on the code screen while opening Move to iOS, re-enter the newly displayed six-digit or ten-digit code, and make sure Android has joined the temporary network created by the iPhone. If the connection still fails, restart both devices and generate a new code rather than reusing an old interrupted session.
Verify the result before wiping the old phone
- Open Photos and check recent images, older dates, videos and representative albums.
- Open WhatsApp and inspect recent and older conversations plus media in several chats.
- Review Contacts, Messages, Calendar, Mail and call history for the categories you selected.
- Open Files and confirm important folders and documents.
- Launch every critical app, install missing iOS versions and sign in.
- Check that the iPhone has enough free storage after the transfer.
- Keep the old phone intact until these checks pass and any required two-factor-authentication codes or account recovery details have been moved.
