Use Samsung Smart Switch. On the new Galaxy, open Smart Switch, tap Receive data, choose Galaxy/Android, and select Wireless or Cable. On the old Galaxy, choose Send data, approve the connection, select the categories to move, and start the transfer. Smart Switch can also use a PC or supported external storage as an intermediate backup.

The exact location of Smart Switch and wording of menus varies by Galaxy model, Android version, and region. Look under Settings > Accounts and backup if it is not already shown in the app list. Do not erase the old phone until you have checked the new phone’s photos, videos, accounts, messages, and important settings.

What Smart Switch can do

Smart Switch is Samsung’s first-party migration tool for moving content from one Galaxy phone to another. It supports a direct wireless connection, a wired USB connection, and backup-and-restore workflows through a computer or supported external storage. It is designed to move far more than camera images: Samsung lists contacts, calendar entries, messages, music, call logs, photos, videos, and other content among the available categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a guaranteed bit-for-bit clone. The categories offered depend on the source phone, the destination phone, operating-system versions, app support, and the type of content. Samsung’s regional guidance identifies some settings, app data, and home-screen layout as Galaxy-only categories. DRM-protected content cannot be transferred according to Samsung’s Gulf support guidance. Review the selectable categories on screen rather than assuming everything on the old phone will appear on the new one.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Choose the right transfer method

Method Best for What you need to check Main trade-off
Wireless A normal move when you want to avoid buying or finding a cable. Keep both phones close, leave them on chargers, and allow Smart Switch to pair them. Transfer time varies with the amount of photos, videos, and other media. Samsung does not publish a universal duration.
USB cable A large library or a move where you want Samsung’s relatively faster wired option. Use a cable compatible with both ports. Some combinations require a USB-OTG adapter. Samsung’s cable guidance calls for at least 20% battery on the devices. You may need an adapter or a different cable, and the phones cannot always remain connected to chargers in the same way as during wireless transfer.
PC backup and restore Keeping an intermediate backup, or transferring when a direct phone-to-phone connection is unavailable. Enough free computer storage, a compatible data cable, and time for two separate Smart Switch operations. It is a two-stage process and needs a computer, but it gives you a recoverable backup during the move.
Supported external storage Creating an intermediate copy on USB storage or a microSD card where the phone supports it. Check whether each Galaxy has the required port, card slot, adapter, and enough storage capacity. Hardware support differs by model; many newer phones do not include a microSD slot.

Samsung’s official US setup guidance says, “If you have a large amount of data to transfer, a wired connection is recommended because it is relatively faster.” That is a recommendation, not a published benchmark. A wired connection is not guaranteed to finish in a particular number of minutes.

Prepare both Galaxy phones before starting

  1. Charge the phones. For a cable transfer, Samsung says to begin with at least 20% battery. For wireless transfer, Samsung’s US photo instructions recommend plugging both phones into chargers throughout the process.
  2. Keep the old phone intact. Do not factory-reset it, remove its memory card, or uninstall apps until the new phone has been checked.
  3. Install or update Smart Switch. It is commonly available in the new phone’s setup flow and may also be found in the app list or under Settings > Accounts and backup. If the menu name differs, use the Settings search box for “Smart Switch.”
  4. Clear practical obstacles. Close heavy apps, unlock both screens when prompted, and keep the devices on a stable surface. A wireless move can be interrupted if one phone goes into a restrictive power-saving state.
  5. Check capacity. The new phone needs enough free storage for the categories you select. If the old phone contains more media than the new phone can hold, plan to leave some files in cloud storage, on a computer, or on supported external storage.
  6. Record critical sign-ins and security details. Smart Switch does not remove the need to sign in again to every service. Make sure you can access password managers, two-factor authentication, banking apps, encrypted notes, and other accounts before wiping the old phone.

Transfer directly over Wi-Fi

Wireless is the simplest route when both phones are available and you do not want to source an adapter. It uses a direct Smart Switch connection rather than requiring a home Wi-Fi network, but the phones still need to remain near each other.

  1. On the new Galaxy, open Smart Switch. If it is not visible, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device or search Settings for Smart Switch; the label varies by software version.
  2. Tap Receive data, then choose Galaxy/Android.
  3. When Smart Switch asks for a connection type, select Wireless.
  4. On the old Galaxy, open Smart Switch, tap Send data, and choose Wireless.
  5. Approve the pairing request on the phones. Samsung’s US photo-transfer instructions specify keeping the devices within about 4 inches during that flow. Keep them close and plugged into chargers rather than moving them around.
  6. Wait while Smart Switch scans the old phone. It will present categories such as images, videos, contacts, messages, call logs, music, calendar data, applications, and settings. Availability differs by source and destination.
  7. Select the categories you actually want. Open category details where available and deselect large or unnecessary items if the new phone has limited storage.
  8. Tap Transfer or Start, then leave both phones undisturbed until Smart Switch reports completion. The elapsed time depends on the amount of multimedia and other data; Samsung does not state one fixed wireless duration.
  9. Keep the old phone available while the new phone finishes installing supported applications and processing transferred data. The transfer screen can finish before every app has completed its own installation or sign-in work.

Transfer with a USB cable

Use a cable when the old phone contains a large photo or video library, when wireless pairing is unreliable, or when you want Samsung’s relatively faster recommended route for a large transfer. The correct cable depends on the ports on both phones. A USB-OTG adapter may be required for some phone-and-cable combinations, so inspect the connectors before buying anything.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Check both Galaxy models’ ports and gather a data-capable cable. A charge-only cable will not establish the Smart Switch connection. If the connectors differ, add the appropriate OTG or port adapter.
  2. Charge both devices to at least 20%, the minimum Samsung specifies in its cable-transfer guidance. More charge is preferable for a very large move.
  3. Open Smart Switch on the new phone and tap Receive data.
  4. Choose Galaxy/Android, then select Cable.
  5. Connect the phones. If an adapter is used, connect it to the phone indicated by Smart Switch and follow the on-screen pairing prompt.
  6. Open Smart Switch on the old phone if it does not launch automatically. Tap Send data and approve the connection.
  7. Review the categories Smart Switch finds. Select photos, videos, settings, contacts, messages, or other supported content individually rather than treating the move as a guaranteed full clone.
  8. Start the transfer and do not disconnect the cable until Smart Switch says it is complete. A loose connector can stop the process or require it to restart.
  9. After the cable step, allow time for applications to install and for their data to become available. Some apps will still request a fresh sign-in or additional setup.

If the phones do not recognize one another, try another known data cable, reseat the adapter, unlock both screens, and check that the cable is connected in the direction shown by Smart Switch. Do not assume a cable that charges both phones also supports data.

Use a PC as an intermediate backup

Smart Switch can back up the old Galaxy to a computer and then restore selected content to the new Galaxy. This route is useful when you want a second copy before changing phones or when direct wireless and cable transfers are not practical.

  1. Install the current desktop Smart Switch software for your computer from Samsung’s official support channel.
  2. Connect the old Galaxy with a compatible data cable and allow any USB or trust prompt on the phone.
  3. In the computer application, choose the backup command and select the categories to include. Wait for the backup to finish before disconnecting.
  4. Disconnect the old phone and connect the new Galaxy.
  5. Choose the restore command in the desktop Smart Switch application. Select the backup you just created and review the available categories.
  6. Restore the needed content, then leave the new phone connected until the application reports completion.
  7. Open Gallery, Contacts, Messages, and key settings on the new phone. Keep the computer backup until you are satisfied that the restored data is usable.

A PC backup is an intermediate copy, not proof that every private app database, encrypted item, or cloud account has been reproduced. Treat app sign-ins and protected content as separate verification tasks.

Back up and restore with external storage

On supported setups, Smart Switch can write a backup to USB storage or a microSD card and restore it to the new Galaxy. This can be convenient when you have no computer, but support depends on the phone’s ports, adapters, card slot, and software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the old phone can write to the chosen storage device and that the storage has more free space than the backup requires.
  2. Connect the USB storage with the necessary adapter, or insert a supported microSD card.
  3. Open Smart Switch on the old phone and choose the backup option for external storage. Select the categories and start the backup.
  4. Safely disconnect the storage from the old phone after Smart Switch confirms completion.
  5. Connect or insert the storage in the new Galaxy, open Smart Switch, and choose the restore option.
  6. Select the backup and the categories to restore. Keep the storage until you have verified the result.

Do not buy a microSD card on the assumption that every Galaxy accepts one; many models omit a card slot. USB storage also needs a compatible adapter and enough capacity.

What transfers, and what requires separate checking

Content What to expect What to verify afterward
Photos and videos Usually offered as selectable media categories when stored locally on the old phone. Open Gallery, inspect recent and older folders, and check a few videos from different dates.
Contacts and calendar Often available for transfer, subject to where the data is stored and which accounts are enabled. Confirm the correct account is displayed and that entries are not merely present on the old device or in a cloud account that has not synchronized.
Messages and call logs Common Smart Switch categories, with availability determined by the phones and software. Open representative conversations and check recent call history.
Music and other local files May be selectable if the files are stored locally and are not restricted. Check folders and playback. DRM-protected content cannot be transferred according to Samsung’s Gulf guidance.
Settings and home layout Some settings, app data, and home-screen layout are identified by Samsung’s Caribbean guidance as Galaxy-only categories. Compare Wi-Fi networks, notification behavior, launcher pages, ringtones, and other settings that matter to you.
Applications Smart Switch can identify apps and may reinstall supported applications, but app availability and private data vary. Open every important app, sign in again where requested, and check locally stored projects or downloads.
Secure, encrypted, or account-bound data May be excluded or require the app’s own export and restore process. Use the service’s documented migration method and confirm access before wiping the old phone.

Verify the new phone before wiping the old one

Verification is the part that prevents a successful-looking transfer from becoming a data-loss incident. Smart Switch’s completion message means the selected operation ended; it does not guarantee that every app’s private or cloud data is ready.

Troubleshoot common Smart Switch problems

The new phone cannot find the old phone wirelessly

  • Make sure Smart Switch is open on both phones, with Receive data selected on the new phone and Send data on the old phone.
  • Move the phones very close together; Samsung’s US photo flow specifies about 4 inches.
  • Plug both phones into chargers and unlock them when a permission prompt appears.
  • Cancel the attempt on both phones, restart Smart Switch, and try pairing again.
  • If wireless continues to fail, use a compatible data cable instead of repeatedly retrying the same connection.

The cable is connected but no transfer starts

  • Confirm that the cable carries data and that the phone ports and adapter are compatible.
  • Unlock both devices and accept USB, permission, or pairing prompts.
  • Check that both phones have at least 20% battery, as specified for Samsung’s cable workflow.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the cable firmly. If possible, try another known data cable or the PC backup route.

The transfer stops or reports insufficient space

  • Check available storage on the new Galaxy before starting again.
  • Return to Smart Switch’s category list and exclude duplicated downloads, very large videos, or content you already backed up elsewhere.
  • Use a PC or supported external storage as an intermediate copy when the destination phone cannot hold the entire local library.
  • Do not delete the old copies until you have opened representative files on the new phone.

An app is present but its data is missing

App installation and private data are separate from the basic transfer. Open the app, sign in, and use its own backup or export feature where required. Encrypted databases, authentication tokens, offline downloads, and account-protected content may not be transferable through Smart Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photos appear incomplete

Check whether the missing items were stored only in a cloud service, on a removable card, inside a protected folder, or in an app-specific directory. Reconnect the old phone and run Smart Switch again with the relevant category selected, or restore from the PC or external-storage backup. Samsung also points users to Google Photos for backing up photos and videos; that can preserve media, but it does not replace Smart Switch when the goal includes device settings.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

When a second backup is the safer choice

Use two copies before resetting the old phone if the data is irreplaceable, the transfer crosses different Android versions, the old phone is damaged, or the new phone has less storage. A direct Smart Switch move is convenient, while a PC or supported external-storage backup gives you an intermediate recovery option. Cloud photo backup can provide another copy of media, but it does not automatically reproduce settings, messages, app state, or the home-screen layout.

Regional and software-version differences

Samsung’s menus and available categories vary by Galaxy model, Android version, and region. The core sequence—Receive data on the new phone, Send data on the old phone, choose a connection, select categories, and start—remains the useful pattern, but labels can differ. Samsung’s US pages document the close-range wireless photo flow and wired recommendation; Gulf and Caribbean guidance supplies additional limits on protected content and Galaxy-only categories. If your screen does not match these names, search Settings for Smart Switch and follow the categories shown for your two devices.
