The safest Mac-to-Windows migration uses separate workflows: export photo files from Photos or download them from iCloud Photos, export Safari data into temporary files, then import bookmarks and passwords through the Windows browser’s supported formats. Do not assume one archive will move everything automatically. Photos, browsing data, and passwords have different file formats, security risks, and verification steps.
This guide covers a local-drive transfer and an iCloud-based transfer, then shows how to move Safari bookmarks, history, extensions, credit cards, and passwords into Microsoft Edge on Windows. It also explains what to verify and what to delete when the migration is complete.
Before you start
Make a short migration plan before exporting anything. You need the Mac, the Windows PC, access to the Apple Account used for iCloud if applicable, and enough temporary storage for exported files. An external drive is optional for a local photo copy; the iCloud route can work without removable storage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Update macOS, Windows, Safari, and Edge as far as your devices allow.
- Sign in to the same Apple Account that contains your iCloud Photos library.
- Decide whether you need ordinary rendered photos, the original imported files, or continued access to an iCloud-synchronized library.
- Prepare a temporary, controlled location for Safari and password exports. Anyone who can open these files may be able to read sensitive information.
- Keep the Mac available until you have opened representative photos, checked bookmarks, and tested important passwords on Windows.
Do not treat iCloud Photos as an independent backup. Apple describes it as synchronization: edits and deletions are reflected across devices using the library. Keep a separate local export if you need an offline copy that will not change when the synchronized library changes. Apple’s iCloud Photos guide explains this behavior.

Choose the right photo-transfer route
| Route | Best when | Internet dependency | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos export to local storage | You want a separate local collection or the Mac is not relying on cloud access | None after the export | Files copied to a location you select, such as an external drive |
| Export unmodified originals | You need the original imported files rather than Photos-rendered versions | None after the export | Original file formats; Live Photos become a still image plus a video |
| iCloud Photos on Windows | Your library already lives in iCloud and you want access or downloads on the PC | Yes | Windows access to the cloud library, with files downloaded when requested |
| iCloud.com download | You need selected items without installing iCloud for Windows | Yes | Downloaded files from the web interface |
Apple’s documentation does not establish a required drive format, capacity, or transfer speed for Photos export. Choose storage with enough free space for the files you intend to copy, and follow the drive manufacturer’s instructions for using it with both computers.
Export photos from Photos to a local drive
Use the standard export for a usable Windows copy
- Connect the external drive, or choose another destination that the Mac can write to.
- Open Photos on the Mac and select the photos or videos you want to move.
- Choose File > Export.
- Choose the export settings offered by Photos, such as the file type, quality, and naming options, then continue.
- Select the destination on the external drive or another folder and start the export.
- Wait for Photos to finish before ejecting the drive. On Windows, open several files from different dates and, if relevant, different cameras or phones.
The standard export is appropriate when you want files that can be browsed and opened independently on Windows. Your selected settings determine whether Photos creates converted copies or retains available metadata. Apple’s procedure is documented in the Photos export guide.
Export unmodified originals when file fidelity matters
If you need the original imported files rather than versions rendered with Photos adjustments, select the items and choose File > Export > Export Unmodified Original. Pick a destination and complete the export. This route is useful for archiving camera originals, preserving the source files for later editing, or avoiding a conversion that changes the file delivered by the camera or phone. Apple lists the available original-file options in its original-format export documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn unmodified-original export does not preserve a Live Photo as one combined object. Apple states that a Live Photo is exported as two separate files: a still image and a video. Keep both files together if you want to retain the moving-photo experience or edit the pair later.

Check the local copy before wiping or selling the Mac
- Open photos and videos from the beginning, middle, and end of the export.
- Check that folders or filenames are organized in a way you can understand on Windows.
- Confirm that Live Photo pairs have both components.
- Compare the number of selected items with the number copied, remembering that one Live Photo can produce two files.
- Only after verification should you erase the Mac’s library or disconnect the external copy.
Download an iCloud Photos library on Windows
Use iCloud for Windows
- Install iCloud for Windows from an official Apple or Microsoft distribution and sign in with the Apple Account that owns the library.
- Enable Photos in iCloud for Windows and complete the setup.
- Open the iCloud Photos location in File Explorer.
- Browse the thumbnails and download the photos or videos you need. Apple’s Windows guide explains that thumbnails can appear before the full files are downloaded.
- Open downloaded files from Windows to verify that the content is available offline.
Apple’s overview of using iCloud Photos on a PC is at Apple Support. Details about downloading files in File Explorer are in the iCloud for Windows guide.
This route is convenient for an existing iCloud Photos user, but it is a synchronization and access method rather than a frozen archive. Changes made in the synchronized library can appear on connected devices. If you need a point-in-time local copy, use Photos export as well.
Use iCloud.com for selected downloads
Open iCloud.com in a browser on Windows, sign in, open Photos, select the items, and use the download control. This avoids installing iCloud for Windows and is practical for a limited selection. For a very large library, browser downloads can be slower to manage than the File Explorer integration; the Apple support page above describes the available PC access methods.
Understand Shared Photo Library limitations
Apple’s Windows documentation says automatic changes for a Shared Photo Library require iCloud for Windows 14 or later. The setup guide also states that Shared Albums storage can be moved only to another folder on the C: drive, not to an external drive. Check your iCloud for Windows version and storage location before assuming a shared library will behave like your personal library. Apple’s setup details cover these version-specific conditions.

Export Safari browsing data on the Mac
Safari’s current export command packages several categories into a ZIP file. Apple says the export can include bookmarks, history, extensions, credit cards, and passwords. Safari profiles have separate history and extensions, while bookmarks, credit cards, and passwords are shared across profiles. That distinction matters if you use profiles for work and personal browsing.
- Open Safari on the Mac.
- Choose File > Export Browsing Data to File.
- Select the categories you want to export.
- Choose a temporary, access-controlled destination and save the ZIP.
- Keep the ZIP available only while you complete the import.
Follow Apple’s exact interface guidance at Export browsing data from Safari. The Safari ZIP is not encrypted, according to Apple. Anyone who can access it may be able to inspect its contents, so do not send it through an unsecured shared folder or leave it on a borrowed computer.
Import bookmarks and passwords into Edge on Windows
Microsoft Edge separates file-based imports by data type. Microsoft documents favorites or bookmarks in an HTML file and passwords in a CSV file, as well as an import option for Chrome. The documentation reviewed does not establish that Safari’s multi-item ZIP can be fed directly into Edge as-is. Exporting a ZIP from Safari is therefore a staging step; use the formats Edge explicitly offers or the import choices shown by your installed Edge version.
Open Edge’s import page
- Open Microsoft Edge on Windows.
- Open Settings and more, then choose Settings.
- Choose Profiles > Import browser data.
- Review the available source and file-type options before selecting a file.
Microsoft’s current instructions are at Import your favorites and passwords in Microsoft Edge.

Import favorites or bookmarks from HTML
Edge’s file import expects an HTML bookmarks file. If your Safari export provides a bookmarks HTML file, select the favorites or bookmarks HTML option on the import page, browse to that file, and start the import. Afterward, open the Favorites menu and check folders, nested folders, and a sample of URLs. A bookmark can import successfully while its website has moved or requires a new sign-in, so test important destinations rather than relying only on the item count.
If the Safari ZIP does not present a bookmarks HTML file that Edge accepts, do not rename the ZIP or guess at a conversion. Use the import choices available in your current Safari and Edge versions, or recreate a small number of critical bookmarks manually while retaining the original export temporarily.
Import passwords from CSV
- On Edge’s Profiles > Import browser data page, choose the password import option.
- Select the CSV file that Edge accepts and begin the import.
- Wait for the confirmation and inspect the saved-password list.
- Open a few high-value sites and sign in to verify that the imported credentials work.
- Delete the CSV immediately after verification.
Password CSV exports are unprotected. Microsoft recommends permanently deleting the CSV after use; on Windows, that means removing it and then emptying the Recycle Bin, or using Shift+Delete when you are certain the file is no longer needed. Do not keep a password CSV in Downloads, email, cloud storage, or an external drive as a backup.
Handle history, extensions, and credit cards separately
Safari’s export can contain history, extensions, and credit cards, but Edge’s documented file imports focus on favorites in HTML and passwords in CSV, alongside a Chrome import route. Do not promise that every Safari category will transfer automatically. Review Edge’s import screen for the options available in your release. Reinstall extensions from their legitimate publishers, sign in to them again, and manually recreate payment details if Edge does not offer a supported import for the exported category. Treat any exported credit-card data as sensitive even when it is not imported.

Secure the temporary files
Protect the Safari ZIP
Apple warns that the Safari browsing-data ZIP is unencrypted. Store it only in a location you control, avoid copying it to a shared service, and delete it after the required imports. If you created multiple copies while troubleshooting, find and remove every copy from the Mac, Windows PC, external drive, and browser download folder.
Protect the password CSV
A password CSV is effectively a readable list of credentials. Keep the transfer offline where practical, do not open it in a spreadsheet that may autosave a copy, and remove it permanently after Edge confirms the import. If the import failed, retain only the minimum time needed to diagnose the format, then export a fresh file rather than distributing the old one.
Revoke unnecessary access
After migration, sign out of the Apple Account on a computer you are giving away, remove any temporary Windows user account, eject removable storage safely, and check cloud services for shared links. If an export was exposed, change the affected passwords from a trusted device and enable multifactor authentication where the service supports it.
Verify the migration on Windows
Photo verification
- Open ordinary photos, videos, and at least one Live Photo pair.
- Check dates, orientation, and visible edits on representative files.
- Confirm that the local copy opens when the external drive is disconnected from the internet.
- If using iCloud for Windows, confirm that files marked as available locally open without waiting for a new download.
Browser verification
- Search Favorites for several old folders and links.
- Open a selection of bookmarks, including sites with deep paths.
- Check Edge’s saved-password list for expected entries without exposing the CSV again.
- Test a few accounts, then confirm that multifactor prompts and security keys still work.
- Look for extensions you actually need and install them through their normal Edge-compatible source.
When an import appears incomplete
- Confirm that you selected the correct file type: HTML for favorites and CSV for passwords.
- Open the export on the Mac only long enough to confirm that the expected category exists.
- Check whether Safari used separate profiles for history or extensions.
- Retry with a newly generated export instead of repeatedly moving a potentially exposed temporary file.
- Manually recreate only the missing items, then delete all temporary exports.
Which route should you use?
Choose local Photos export when you want a self-contained collection, need original imported files, or want an offline copy independent of synchronization. Choose iCloud for Windows when your library already lives in iCloud and you want ongoing access from Windows. Use iCloud.com for a small, selected download without installing the Windows client. For browser data, export from Safari, then match each category to the import format Edge documents. A Safari ZIP is not a guaranteed one-click migration package, and sensitive exports should exist only for the short period required to complete and verify the move.
