The fastest, most dependable way to transfer pictures from a Samsung Galaxy S10 is a USB connection. Use a USB-C cable that carries data, approve access on the phone, choose Transferring files/Android Auto if Android asks, and copy images from Internal storage > DCIM > Camera to a folder on your computer. A Mac can use the same USB connection with its Photos import workflow, while Samsung Smart Switch is better when you want a broader computer backup instead of a handful of photographs.
The exact notification wording can vary with the S10’s Android/One UI version, your computer’s operating system and, on Mac, the macOS release. The sequence below follows Samsung’s documented Galaxy workflows and identifies where those differences matter.
Choose the transfer method that matches your goal
There are two practical routes. USB file browsing is the direct choice for selected pictures: it exposes the phone’s storage so you can copy original files into a folder or import them into a photo library. Smart Switch is an application-driven backup intended for broader device data. It is usually unnecessary when you only need a few images.

What you need before connecting
- A data-capable USB cable. Use USB-C-to-USB-C when the computer has a USB-C port, or USB-A-to-USB-C when it has a conventional USB-A port. Samsung warns that “some charging cables do not support data transfer”; a charge-only lead can power the S10 without exposing its files.
- An unlocked phone. Keep the screen on while the initial connection prompt appears. If Android asks whether to allow access to phone data, approve it.
- Free storage on the computer. Copying creates a second set of files; do not erase the originals until you have checked the copies.
- A direct USB port when possible. A hub, monitor port or adapter can interrupt the connection. If detection is unreliable, connect directly to the computer.
Transfer S10 pictures to a Windows PC over USB
Windows uses the phone’s Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) connection. The S10 may show slightly different labels, but the sequence is the same.

- Connect the cable. Plug the USB-C end into the Galaxy S10 and the other end into the appropriate PC port. Use a cable known to carry data, not only power.
- Allow phone-data access. When the S10 displays Allow access to phone data, tap Allow. Without this permission, Windows may show only charging.
- Select file transfer. Swipe down to open notifications and tap the USB notification. Choose Transferring files/Android Auto (or the equivalent File transfer label). Leave the phone unlocked until Windows finishes identifying it.
- Open the device in File Explorer. On the PC, open File Explorer, select the Galaxy S10 under This PC, and open Internal storage.
- Open the camera folder. Go to
DCIM > Camera. Camera photos and videos are commonly stored there. Select individual files, useCtrl+Afor everything in that folder, or select a date range. - Copy to a named PC folder. Press
Ctrl+C, create or open a destination such asPictures rom Galaxy S10, and press
eceived 2026-10Ctrl+V. Dragging the selection to the destination also works. Copy rather than move so the phone originals remain intact while you verify the result. - Wait for completion. Large videos and many high-resolution images can take time. Do not unplug while the copy dialog is active. Open several files from the PC folder after it finishes, then use Windows’ eject option before disconnecting.
Find pictures that are not in DCIM/Camera
Screenshots, downloaded images and pictures saved by messaging or social applications may use different folders. On the S10, open the image in Gallery, tap the three-dot menu (or Details), and read the listed path. Recreate that path under Internal storage in File Explorer, then copy the files from there. The Gallery details path is more reliable than guessing a folder name because each app can choose its own storage location.
Import S10 photos to a Mac
Samsung’s Mac instructions describe a general Galaxy USB workflow: connect the phone, change the USB mode to file or picture transfer, grant access, and import or drag photos into the Mac’s Photos library. Samsung’s example uses newer Galaxy and Mac hardware than the S10, so treat the labels as version-dependent rather than proof that every S10 displays identical screens.

- Connect with a data cable. Use USB-C-to-USB-C if the Mac has USB-C, or a USB-A-to-USB-C cable with a compatible port or adapter.
- Approve access on the S10. Tap Allow on the phone’s data-access prompt. Open the USB notification and select a file- or picture-transfer mode if the prompt does not appear automatically.
- Open the Mac’s import workflow. Launch Photos. If the S10 appears as an available device, select it and choose the pictures to import. Depending on macOS and the Android/One UI version, you may instead need a file-browsing window supplied by the system or another installed Android-transfer utility.
- Choose an import destination. Import into an existing Photos library or create an album for the S10 transfer. If you prefer ordinary files, drag the selected images from the phone’s storage into a Finder folder when that storage is available.
- Verify before disconnecting. Open several imported pictures in Photos or Finder, confirm that the count and dates look right, and then eject or disconnect the phone.
If the S10 never appears on the Mac, check the phone’s USB mode and permissions first. Support can depend on the macOS release and Android/One UI build, so do not assume that a menu shown for a newer Galaxy will be present word-for-word on an S10.

Use Smart Switch for a broader computer backup
Samsung Smart Switch for Windows or Mac is an alternative when the objective is a device backup rather than simply selecting pictures. Samsung says its desktop application can back up device data to a computer. It can therefore preserve more than the camera folder, but it adds an application and compatibility requirements.

- Download and install the current Smart Switch desktop application for your computer’s operating system from Samsung’s official support channel.
- Open Smart Switch, connect the S10 with a data-capable USB cable, unlock the phone and approve data access.
- Choose the computer-backup command and review what categories Smart Switch offers before starting.
- Leave the phone connected until the backup reports completion. Keep the backup folder on a drive with enough free space.
- For a few readily accessible pictures, use the USB copy method instead; Smart Switch is not required merely to duplicate files from
DCIM/Camera.
Check Smart Switch’s current supported macOS or Windows versions and device requirements before installing. Those requirements can change independently of the S10’s hardware.
Troubleshoot a phone that charges but does not show files
Work through these checks in order; each one eliminates a common failure without risking the originals.

1. Confirm the cable carries data
Try a known-good USB-C cable that is specified for data transfer. A cable can fit perfectly and charge normally while lacking the wires needed for MTP. If changing the cable immediately makes the phone appear, keep the original for charging only.
2. Reapprove access and select MTP
Unlock the S10, reconnect it and accept Allow access to phone data. Pull down the notification shade, tap the USB status message and choose Transferring files/Android Auto or File transfer. A setting of Charging phone will not expose folders.

3. Change the physical connection
Use another USB port on the computer, preferably a port directly on the machine rather than a hub, dock or monitor. If an adapter is involved, test a different adapter or a native port. Reconnect only after the phone is unlocked and the computer is ready.
4. Restart both sides
Disconnect the cable, restart the S10 and restart Windows or macOS, then reconnect and repeat the permission and USB-mode steps. A fresh MTP session often clears a stalled device enumeration.
5. Follow Samsung’s driver guidance on Windows
If Windows still does not detect the phone, use Samsung’s official troubleshooting path. When Smart Switch is installed, its additional-functions area includes an option to reinstall the device driver; reinstall it, reconnect the S10 and test again. Driver behavior depends on the Windows build, so use the current Samsung instructions rather than an old third-party driver package.

A correctly connected phone can still appear to be missing a picture if the image is stored outside DCIM/Camera. Use Gallery’s Details view to identify the path, then browse to that folder in Internal storage. Screenshots, browser downloads and app media commonly use separate directories.
Verify the transfer safely
- Compare the number of selected files with the number in the destination folder.
- Open several recent and older images, plus at least one video if you copied videos.
- Check that filenames, dates and orientation look correct in the computer’s viewer.
- Keep the S10 originals until the computer copies open correctly and, for important memories, until a second backup exists.
- Use the computer’s eject command or close the import session before unplugging to avoid an incomplete file.
Which approach should you use?
Choose USB browsing when you need a small, controlled selection, want the original files in ordinary folders, or need to locate media in a specific app directory. Choose the Mac Photos import path when your library is the destination and the phone is recognized by Photos. Choose Smart Switch when you want a wider device backup and are prepared to verify its current software compatibility. In every case, the decisive prerequisites are a data-capable cable, permission on the S10 and the correct USB transfer mode.
