Use Android’s Credential Exchange when both password-manager apps support it: open the new manager, choose its import or copy-from-another-provider option, select the old manager from Android’s compatible-provider list, then review and approve the transfer. This moves passwords and, where supported, passkeys without creating a download file. Google announced the feature on September 10, 2026.
What Android’s direct transfer changes
Credential Exchange is Android’s system-level route for moving credentials between compatible password managers. Instead of exporting a CSV, you authorize the destination app to request supported passwords and passkeys from the source app. Android presents the available providers and coordinates the handoff.
Google currently names Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager and Dashlane as participating apps, with additional partners planned. The feature is not guaranteed on every phone or app release: both managers, Android, and the device configuration must support the exchange.
The direct route is the safest first choice because it avoids leaving a plaintext export on storage, email, cloud drives or a computer.

Prepare both managers before moving anything
- Install and sign in to the destination manager on the Android phone.
- Update both password-manager apps and Android if updates are available.
- Unlock the source manager and confirm that its vault is accessible.
- Decide which account will become the destination for autofill and passkeys.
- Keep the old manager installed until logins and passkeys have been tested.
Transfer passwords and passkeys directly with Credential Exchange
- Open the destination password-manager app.
- Start its Import, Copy from another provider or similarly named migration action. The exact wording differs by app version.
- When Android displays compatible password providers, select the source manager.
- Review the credentials and permissions shown by the two apps, then approve the exchange.
- Wait for the destination app to finish processing, and check its item count before changing or deleting anything in the old vault.
For example, when moving from Google Password Manager to Bitwarden on Android, begin in Bitwarden’s import or provider-copy flow, choose Google Password Manager when Android lists it, approve the transfer, and then test Bitwarden as the active provider. If Google Password Manager or Bitwarden does not appear, the phone or installed app versions do not currently expose a compatible exchange; use the file-based method below instead.
If direct transfer is unavailable
Use a source export in a format the destination can read. The destination manager’s import screen normally identifies supported formats and may offer a source-specific preset.

Export from the old manager
Follow the source app’s export command and choose its supported format. Bitwarden documents imports from 1Password and from browser exports, including an Android mobile path. 1Password documents CSV and application-based imports.

Anyone who obtains the file may be able to read every password. Do not email it, upload it to a shared or online location, or leave it in a downloads folder. Keep it only in a protected local location for the duration of the import, then delete it and empty the trash or recycle bin.

Import into the new manager
- Open the destination manager’s import tool.
- Select the source manager or the exact export format, such as CSV, when prompted.
- Choose the local export file and start the import.
- Resolve duplicate, unsupported or malformed records reported by the destination.
- After the import completes, compare totals and inspect important records before removing the source vault.

Why passkeys may not transfer
Passkeys are not ordinary password records. Their private keys are handled through platform and provider APIs, so a CSV containing usernames and passwords cannot reproduce them. Credential Exchange is the appropriate route when both managers implement passkey transfer.
A file migration can complete successfully while omitting passkeys. In the documented 1Password/Bitwarden file-migration path, passkeys and shared-collection items are not imported. Treat a successful password count as insufficient proof that passkeys moved.

Fallback when a passkey is missing
- Open the website or app for the account and sign in using another available method, such as the existing password or account recovery.
- In that account’s security settings, choose the option to add or create a new passkey.
- When Android asks where to save it, select the destination manager.
- Sign out and test the new passkey in the browser and the app.
- Remove the old passkey only after the replacement works and another recovery method is available.
Google Password Manager details
Chrome Help documents importing passwords and passkeys into Google Password Manager on Android. When passkeys are exported from a new device, Google may require the old device’s screen lock or the Google Password Manager PIN. Have that old-device authentication available before starting an export or device change.

Verify the migration before deleting the old vault
- In Android settings, confirm that the destination manager is selected for autofill and for passkey storage. The exact settings labels vary by Android release; search Settings for Autofill and Passkeys if necessary.
- Test several password logins in a browser and in at least one installed app.
- Test at least one passkey login in a browser and an app that support passkeys.
- Compare item counts and inspect high-value accounts, passkeys, two-factor authentication secrets, secure notes and shared items.
- Keep the old manager available until these checks pass. Then delete any export file and remove the old provider or app.
Troubleshooting common failures
The source manager is not listed
Update both apps, reopen the destination’s import flow, and verify that the source is installed and unlocked. If it still does not appear, that app/device combination does not currently support Credential Exchange; use a supported export format.

Passwords transferred but passkeys did not
This usually indicates a file migration or a provider that exchanges passwords but not passkeys. Add replacement passkeys from each service while you can still authenticate with the old manager.
The import count is lower than expected
Look for duplicate merging, unsupported record types, shared collections and excluded folders. Compare the source and destination by category rather than relying only on the final total.
Autofill still opens the old manager
Change Android’s autofill provider to the destination and repeat a login test in both Chrome and an installed app. A successful import does not automatically change the system-wide provider selection.
