Yes. You can move your The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time progress to another Nintendo Switch in two ways: use Nintendo’s nearby-console save transfer while the original Switch is available, or download an eligible Save Data Cloud backup. Nearby transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it does require both consoles, an internet connection and the same Nintendo Account. Cloud restoration requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an existing backup.
Ocarina of Time is accessed through Nintendo 64 Classics, so Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is needed to open that library. That library requirement is separate from the requirements for moving the save itself.

Choose the transfer method that fits your situation
| Decision | Nearby console transfer | Save Data Cloud restore |
|---|---|---|
| Is the old Switch required? | Yes, it must be usable during the transfer. | No, provided an eligible backup exists. |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership | Not required. | Required to access and download cloud backups. |
| Connection requirements | Both consoles online and physically near each other. | Internet access and sign-in to the Nintendo Account that owns the backup. |
| Destination result | The selected save is moved to the receiving console. | The selected backup replaces that game’s existing destination save. |
| Best choice | The original Switch is available and you want a direct move. | The original Switch is lost, damaged, unavailable or already erased, but a backup is available. |
Use nearby transfer when possible. It avoids membership requirements and lets you choose the current save directly from the old console. Use the cloud method only when the backup is the version you want and you accept that downloading it overwrites the destination save for that game.
These are save-data operations, not full console migrations. They do not move screenshots, videos, downloaded games, controllers or microSD-card contents. If you need those items on the new system, use Nintendo’s separate user, system or storage-transfer procedures. For Ocarina of Time progress specifically, the relevant save entry is what matters.

Prepare both consoles before moving the save
Do these checks before opening the transfer screens:
- Update the system software on both Switch consoles and install the Nintendo 64 Classics software on the destination console if it is not already available to the intended user.
- Connect both consoles to the internet. Nintendo’s nearby-transfer procedure also requires the systems to be near each other.
- Sign in with the same Nintendo Account on the user profiles that will send and receive the save. Nintendo ties the transfer to matching account-linked users.
- Charge both systems or keep them connected to power. Do not shut down, reset or erase the source while the transfer is in progress.
- Make sure the destination has enough free storage for the software and its data.
- If you are considering cloud restoration, verify that the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active and that the relevant account has a usable backup with a timestamp you recognize.
Nearby transfer requires the consoles to communicate over the internet while they are close together; it is not a method for sending a save remotely from another household. Keep both systems awake and within practical range until the prompts say the process is complete. If either console loses connection, return to the transfer screen and check the status before trying again.
Ocarina of Time does not use a physical Switch cartridge in this setup. It is played through Nintendo 64 Classics, and access to that library currently requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. You can therefore transfer a save locally without Nintendo Switch Online, but you still need the appropriate library access to launch the game on the destination system. No replacement cartridge, accessory, repair tool or special cable is required by Nintendo’s documented procedure.

Transfer Ocarina of Time locally from the old Switch
This is Nintendo’s direct console-to-console method. It sends the selected save rather than creating a second permanent copy.
- Open the sending console’s transfer menu. From the HOME Menu, go to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Choose the sending user. Select the user profile that owns the Ocarina of Time progress. The corresponding user on the destination must be linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Select the software save. Choose the Ocarina of Time-related entry that appears in the list, then continue. Nintendo’s published transfer instructions do not identify the exact label used for this game’s save entry, so do not expect a guaranteed wording such as “Ocarina of Time Save Data.” Select the relevant entry displayed on your consoles.
- Open the receiving console’s transfer menu. On the destination Switch, use the corresponding transfer screen and choose the option for receiving save data from another console.
- Pair the consoles. Keep both systems close together and follow the active on-screen prompts. Nintendo varies some of the remaining screens according to the source and target system types, so follow the wording shown rather than relying on a button sequence from a different model.
- Wait for completion. Leave both consoles powered on and connected until each system reports that the transfer has finished. Do not launch the game, put either system to sleep or remove the user during this stage.
- Verify on the destination. Open Nintendo 64 Classics with the receiving user, start Ocarina of Time and check that your expected in-game progress is present before changing anything on the old console.
Nintendo states that a nearby transfer does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The selected save is deleted from the sending console after it has been transferred, so this is a move operation, not a backup or duplication feature. Keep the old Switch intact until you have launched the game and confirmed the correct progress on the new one.
This menu is different from transferring an entire user. If you only need Ocarina of Time, select the save-data transfer command and the appropriate software entry. A complete user transfer may include additional account and save information and has its own prompts and consequences. Read each confirmation screen so you do not accidentally move more data than intended.
The official nearby-transfer instructions are available from Nintendo Support’s “How to Transfer Your Save Data To a Nearby Console”.

Cloud restore is useful when the old Switch cannot be used, but it works only when the Nintendo Account has an eligible backup for the game and you can sign in to that account. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to access Save Data Cloud.
Download from the game’s software menu
- On the destination Switch, highlight the Nintendo 64 Classics software on the HOME Menu. Do not start it.
- Press the + or − button to open the software options.
- Select Save Data Cloud, then choose the user profile associated with the backup.
- Review the available backup and its timestamp. Make sure it represents the progress you want before confirming.
- Select Download Save Data and follow the confirmation prompts.
- Launch Nintendo 64 Classics with that user and check Ocarina of Time before making new progress.
Use System Settings instead
You can also reach the same function through System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Choose the user, select the compatible software entry and then choose the download command. The labels can vary slightly by system software version, but the destination is the Save Data Cloud section.
Cloud backups are associated with the Nintendo Account user that created them. Signing in with a different local profile, even on the same console, will not necessarily show the backup you expect. If several users played Nintendo 64 Classics, check each account deliberately rather than downloading the first entry listed.
Nintendo warns that downloaded data replaces the existing save data on the console for that game and that the overwritten destination data cannot be recovered. The official wording is: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game.” See Nintendo’s cloud-backup download instructions.

If the destination already contains newer Ocarina of Time progress, copy or preserve that progress by another supported method before downloading. There is no undo command for the overwritten destination save. Check the backup date and time, especially if the old console was used after the last cloud upload.
If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expired, Nintendo says you can restore access to prior cloud backups by resubscribing within 180 days. Do not assume that an old backup remains downloadable indefinitely without membership. If more than 180 days have passed, or if no backup is listed, the cloud method may not be available.
Understand the two different Nintendo Switch Online requirements
Nearby transfer does not need the subscription
Nintendo explicitly says, “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use this feature,” in its nearby-transfer guidance. You still need internet access on both consoles for the transfer session, but internet connectivity is not the same as an Online subscription.
Cloud restore does need an active membership
Save Data Cloud is an Online service. The account that owns the backup must have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership when you download it. The backup must also be eligible for cloud storage; not every Switch title supports the feature in every circumstance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExpansion Pack controls access to Nintendo 64 Classics
Nintendo 64 Classics is part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack library. Nintendo’s current Suspend Point guidance states that an active Expansion Pack membership is required to access Nintendo 64 Classics. This affects whether you can open Ocarina of Time, not whether the nearby-transfer menu can move a save.
In practical terms, a player with two consoles can perform a nearby move without paying for Nintendo Switch Online, then use the Expansion Pack membership separately to launch the Nintendo 64 library. A player relying on cloud restore needs the Online membership for the download and the Expansion Pack access needed to play Ocarina of Time.
Ocarina of Time saves, Suspend Points and what the transfer list means
Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics documentation covers two kinds of progress-management features: the game’s own save behavior and Suspend Points created from the Suspend Menu. For Nintendo 64 Classics, you can create a Suspend Point from that menu and overwrite one of four available slots.
The available support material does not establish whether a particular Ocarina of Time in-game save and a Suspend Point appear as separate entries in the system transfer list. It also does not publish a universal save-entry label for Ocarina of Time. Treat the list shown on your consoles as authoritative: select the relevant software entry, and after the move check both your normal in-game progress and any Suspend Point you rely on.
If you want to preserve a particular moment before moving, create or update the desired Suspend Point on the old console first, then complete the transfer and verify it on the destination. Do not assume that a Suspend Point is an independent backup unless it is visible and usable after the transfer. The four-slot limit applies to the Suspend Point feature, so overwriting a slot on the source can remove the earlier point from that slot before you transfer.
Moving from a Switch to a Switch 2
Nintendo supports save-data compatibility between Switch and Switch 2 for some software, but compatibility depends on the individual game. Before starting, check whether the Ocarina of Time/Nintendo 64 Classics entry is supported on the exact source and destination systems you have. The transfer screens may differ when one console is a Switch 2, so follow the prompts shown on each device.
If the software is not compatible on the destination, a successful system-level transfer cannot make it playable there. Confirm that the destination can access Nintendo 64 Classics with the intended Nintendo Account and Expansion Pack membership, and verify the specific software entry before erasing or trading in the old console. Do not infer compatibility solely because another Nintendo 64 title works on both systems; Nintendo evaluates software compatibility individually.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems
The transfer option is missing
- Install pending system updates on both consoles and restart them.
- Return to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data and confirm that you selected the save-transfer feature rather than the separate user-transfer workflow.
- Connect both systems to the internet and keep them close together.
- Check that the sending and receiving users are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Make sure you are not looking inside the Nintendo 64 Classics software menu; the nearby transfer command is a system-level setting.
Ocarina of Time is not listed
- Confirm that you are using the user profile that played the game.
- Make sure the Nintendo 64 Classics software is installed or otherwise available to that user on the destination.
- Look for the relevant software entry without assuming a specific title format; Nintendo has not documented one fixed label for this transfer screen.
- Check whether you are transferring from the console that actually contains the save. A newly installed copy of the software alone does not create progress.
- If the entry still does not appear, stop before deleting the source console. A cloud restore is possible only if a compatible backup exists.
The cloud menu is unavailable
- Check that the Nintendo Account is signed in and that Nintendo Switch Online is active.
- Review the Save Data Cloud screen for a backup timestamp. No timestamp generally means there is no downloadable backup for that user and software.
- Verify that you selected the correct user; cloud backups belong to the account profile that created them.
- If membership lapsed, determine whether you are still within Nintendo’s 180-day resubscription window for restoring access to previous backups.
- Confirm that the destination software is compatible with cloud saves and that you are connected to the internet.
The destination starts with the wrong progress
Stop playing before creating more saves. For a local transfer, confirm that the correct user and software entry were selected and repeat only after checking the source. For a cloud restore, compare the backup timestamp with the progress you expected; downloading a different backup replaces the destination data again.
The old console was reset too soon
If the source save was deleted by a completed nearby transfer, it should now be on the destination. If the old console was erased before a transfer completed and no cloud backup exists, Nintendo’s documented methods do not provide another recovery path. This is why verification on the new console must happen before formatting, selling, trading in or deleting the old system.
Final verification checklist
- Open Nintendo 64 Classics using the same Nintendo Account-linked user.
- Launch Ocarina of Time and confirm the expected in-game save, location and items.
- Open the Suspend Menu and check any Suspend Point you intended to keep.
- Close and reopen the software once to ensure the progress persists.
- Only after verification, reset, sell, trade in or otherwise erase the old Switch.
For most players with both consoles in hand, nearby transfer is the safest route: it requires no Nintendo Switch Online subscription and moves the selected save directly. Cloud restore is the fallback when the old console is unavailable and a valid, account-owned backup can be downloaded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my Ocarina of Time save without Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes. Nintendo’s nearby-console save transfer does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Both consoles must be online, close to each other and using users linked to the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo Switch Online is required for a Save Data Cloud download, not for the direct local move.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to transfer the save?
No for the transfer itself. Expansion Pack is required to access Nintendo 64 Classics, where Ocarina of Time is played. You can move the save locally without an Online membership, but you need the appropriate Expansion Pack access to launch the library and verify the game on the destination.
What happens to the save on my old Switch after a nearby transfer?
Nintendo’s nearby transfer moves the selected save and deletes it from the sending console after completion. It is not a copy operation. Keep the old Switch powered on and unchanged until you launch Ocarina of Time on the new console and confirm the expected progress.
Can I restore the save if my old Switch is lost or broken?
Only if an eligible Save Data Cloud backup exists for the Nintendo Account user who played the game. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to download it, and the backup must be visible with a usable timestamp. Downloading replaces the destination’s existing save for that game.
Can I move an Ocarina of Time save from Switch to Switch 2?
Nintendo supports save compatibility for some software, but compatibility is software-dependent. Check the Ocarina of Time/Nintendo 64 Classics entry on the exact consoles involved before transferring. The prompts may differ when a Switch 2 is one of the systems.
Will my Suspend Points transfer with the normal save?
Nintendo documents Suspend Points for Nintendo 64 Classics, including four overwriteable slots, but its transfer guidance does not specify whether an in-game save and a Suspend Point appear as separate transferable entries. After transferring, open the Suspend Menu and verify every point you need; do not treat a Suspend Point as a separate backup unless it is present and usable.

What if Ocarina of Time is not shown in the transfer list?
Use the user profile that originally played the game and look for the relevant software entry without expecting one fixed title label. Update both systems, confirm the consoles are online and nearby, and check the same Nintendo Account on both users. Do not erase the old console while the entry is missing; a cloud restore works only if a backup exists.
The Bottom Line
With the old Switch available, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data. It requires internet access and matching Nintendo Account users, but no Nintendo Switch Online membership, and it deletes the selected source save after moving it. If the old console is unavailable, use Save Data Cloud only when an account-owned backup and active Nintendo Switch Online membership are available; downloading replaces the destination save. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is needed separately to open Nintendo 64 Classics and play Ocarina of Time.
