For a Sony Walkman WM1AM2 or WM1ZM2, Windows users can transfer music either with Sony Music Center for PC or by dragging files in Windows Explorer. Mac users need a utility that supports Android file transfer. In every case, select File Transfer on the Walkman, copy files into the documented Music folder, wait for the copy to finish, and disconnect safely. Internal storage and a microSD card are both supported destinations.
What you need before transferring music
This procedure applies to the Sony Walkman Signature Series models WM1AM2 and WM1ZM2. Prepare the following:
- The Walkman, powered on and unlocked if it requests access.
- The supplied USB Type-C cable or another cable that supports data, not charging only.
- A Windows computer with Music Center for PC version 2.4 or later, or Windows Explorer.
- For a Mac, an up-to-date utility designed to transfer files to Android devices. Sony’s player guide describes this software category but does not designate one vendor.
- Your music files arranged and tagged in the source library before copying.
Keep the computer awake for the entire operation. Sony warns that putting the computer into sleep or standby during transfer or import can interrupt the process. Do not unplug the Type-C cable while files are being copied; an interruption can damage data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the transfer method
| Method | Best for | How it handles your library | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Music Center for PC | Windows users who want album and track selection inside Sony’s library software | Select albums or tracks, choose internal storage or microSD, and use the transfer command | Recognition is not assured with versions earlier than 2.4 |
| Windows Explorer | Windows users who already have correctly organized folders | Direct drag-and-drop into the Walkman’s Music folder | You manage folders, duplicates, artwork and metadata yourself |
| Android file-transfer utility on macOS | Mac users | Copies files through an Android-compatible device connection | Software support, device recognition and metadata behavior vary by utility and version |
The files ultimately belong in the Walkman’s Music location. The choice of software changes how you start and monitor the copy; it does not change that destination.

Transfer music on Windows with Music Center for PC
Sony’s official Windows route is Music Center for PC. Use version 2.4 or later: Sony warns that an earlier release may fail to recognize the player.
Step 1: Install or update Music Center
- Install Music Center for PC and confirm that the installed version is 2.4 or later.
- Open Music Center before connecting the Walkman, or leave it ready to detect the player.
Step 2: Connect in File Transfer mode
- Connect the Walkman to the computer with a data-capable USB Type-C cable.
- On the Walkman, open the Use USB for menu.
- Select File Transfer. Do not select a playback-only mode if your goal is to copy files.
Step 3: Pick the destination
- In Music Center, select the connected Walkman.
- Choose either the player’s internal storage or the inserted microSD card as the destination.
Step 4: Select and transfer music
- Browse Music Center’s library and select the albums or tracks to copy.
- Click the transfer arrow. Leave the cable connected while Music Center completes the operation.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then use the computer’s safe-eject process before disconnecting.
If the Walkman does not appear, check the version first, reconnect with File Transfer selected, and try a different known-good data cable. If a USB-C-to-USB-C connection continues to fail, follow the USB-C troubleshooting section below.
Drag and drop music with Windows Explorer
You do not need Music Center for a straightforward Windows copy. Sony’s Help Guide explicitly supports transferring content directly by dragging and dropping from Windows Explorer.
Copy to internal storage
- Connect the Walkman and select File Transfer in Use USB for.
- Open Windows Explorer and select the connected device, usually shown as WALKMAN.
- Open Internal shared storage, then open the Music folder.
- Drag your prepared album folders or individual files into Music.
- Wait until Windows reports that the copy is complete. Eject the Walkman safely before unplugging it.
Copy to a microSD card
- Insert and mount the microSD card in the Walkman.
- Connect the player, select File Transfer, and open WALKMAN in Explorer.
- Open the microSD card’s storage location rather than Internal shared storage.
- Open or create its Music folder and drag the album folders or files there.
- Allow the copy to finish, safely eject the device, and then disconnect.
Explorer gives you maximum control over folder names, but it will not clean up inconsistent tags, duplicate files or missing artwork. Organize the source folders first.

Transfer music from a Mac
Sony’s player guide directs Mac owners to software designed to transfer files to an Android device. It does not name a particular utility. Because macOS support and device-recognition behavior can change, verify that the utility you choose currently supports Android USB file transfer and your macOS release before installing it.
General Mac procedure
- Install a currently supported Android file-transfer utility from its verified vendor.
- Connect the Walkman with a data-capable USB cable.
- On the Walkman, open Use USB for and choose File Transfer.
- In the utility, wait for the Walkman and its storage volumes to appear.
- Open the internal storage’s Music folder, or the microSD card’s Music folder.
- Copy your organized album folders into the chosen destination.
- Wait for the utility to finish, eject the device using its own disconnect control when available, and then unplug the cable.
If the utility cannot see the Walkman, confirm that the phone-style USB mode is File Transfer, keep the Mac awake, and test a different data cable or USB port. Do not assume that a cable that charges the Walkman can also carry data.
What to verify before relying on a Mac utility
- Device recognition: the utility should list the WM1AM2 or WM1ZM2 storage after you select File Transfer.
- Reliability: it should complete a test copy without disconnecting or reporting an incomplete transfer.
- Metadata preservation: confirm that artist, album, track-number and title tags remain intact after a small test transfer.
Those checks are especially important because Sony’s guidance specifies the software category, not a single guaranteed Mac application.

Organize the library so the Walkman is easy to browse
Use one album folder per release
Under Music, use a predictable hierarchy such as:
Music/Artist Name/Album Name/01 - Track Title.flac
Sony specifically documents keeping one folder per album. An artist folder above the album is optional but makes a large card easier to maintain. Use a stable naming style for every album and avoid mixing several spellings of the same artist.

Fix tags before you copy
Folder names help with file management, while embedded tags drive how music applications identify artist, album, title and track order. Before transferring, make the following consistent in your source library:
- Artist and album-artist spelling, including punctuation and accents.
- Album title and, where relevant, disc number and total discs.
- Track number and title, with leading zeroes if that is your convention.
- Compilation or various-artist fields, so guest appearances do not create unwanted duplicate artist entries.
Correcting tags after a large copy means finding and replacing files on the Walkman. A clean source library prevents that rework.
Add album art with a supported filename and format
Sony documents an optional cover-art method: give the image the same base name as the album folder. For example, an album folder named Kind of Blue can contain an image named Kind of Blue.jpg. Supported image forms listed by Sony are baseline JPEG, progressive JPEG and non-interlaced PNG. Keep the image in the album folder and use the same spelling, including spaces and punctuation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep internal storage and the card logically separate
Do not scatter an album’s files between internal storage and microSD unless you have a deliberate reason. A complete album in one location is easier to back up, move and troubleshoot. If you later replace the card, preserve the same top-level Music structure so the player can rescan a familiar layout.

Internal storage or microSD: which should hold your music?
Both destinations are documented by Sony, so the practical decision is capacity and handling rather than basic compatibility.
| Consideration | Internal storage | microSD card |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer location | WALKMAN > Internal shared storage > Music |
The card’s storage volume, inside its Music folder |
| Capacity strategy | Fixed capacity built into the player; exact available space depends on the model and existing content | Removable capacity; the usable amount depends on the card and free space |
| Removability | Not removable | Can be removed for replacement, backup or use in another compatible device after unmounting safely |
| Best fit | A core collection you always want with the player | A growing, rotating or very large library that benefits from expansion |
| Risk to manage | Moving the library later requires another transfer | Removing or replacing the card makes its music unavailable until the card is reinserted |
Choose internal storage for albums that must remain available even when no card is inserted. Choose microSD when removability and expansion matter more. Whichever you choose, use the correct storage volume’s Music folder; copying to a similarly named folder elsewhere will not make the tracks appear.

The Walkman is not recognized
- On the player, reopen Use USB for and select File Transfer.
- With Music Center, confirm version 2.4 or later. Earlier versions may not recognize the player.
- Try another USB port and a cable known to carry data.
- Close other software that may have claimed the USB connection, then reconnect.
- Keep the computer awake while the device is being detected and copied.
A USB-C-to-USB-C connection fails
A Sony support article last modified January 19, 2026, warns that transferring content may fail when the Walkman and computer are connected with a USB Type-C-to-Type-C cable. If that describes your setup, Sony recommends using Music Center for PC and enabling Auto assign transfer: The file will always be converted to AAC format and then transferred. Apply that setting in Music Center, retry the transfer, and keep the player in File Transfer mode.
If you are using Explorer or a Mac utility, first try a different data-capable cable and USB port. A replacement cable should support data transfer; charging capability alone is not enough.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The copy stops partway through
- Do not disconnect the cable during the copy; Sony warns that doing so can damage data.
- Disable sleep or standby temporarily on the computer.
- Copy a small album as a test. If that succeeds, retry the larger batch in smaller groups.
- Check free space on the selected internal storage or microSD card.
- After a failed attempt, remove any obviously incomplete file before copying it again, so you do not mistake a partial file for a valid track.
Files copied successfully but are missing from the music view
- Reconnect the player and confirm the files are inside the correct storage volume’s Music folder.
- Check that the transfer actually completed rather than leaving zero-byte or partial files.
- Safely disconnect the Walkman and allow it to rescan its storage.
- Inspect tags and filenames if only certain albums or tracks are missing. Inconsistent artist, album or track fields can make entries appear in an unexpected group.
Use the documented folder and safe-disconnect checks first. Unverified forum fixes should not replace those basic manufacturer instructions.
ATRAC files will not play
Sony states that the player does not support ATRAC. Music Center for PC can convert ATRAC to AAC during transfer. If your source library contains ATRAC, use Music Center’s conversion workflow rather than copying the unsupported files unchanged.
Music Center for PC versus Explorer
| Capability | Music Center for PC | Windows Explorer |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer style | Select albums or tracks and click the transfer arrow | Drag folders or files into the destination |
| Required version | Version 2.4 or later for reliable recognition according to Sony’s guide | No Music Center installation required |
| Library management | Provides a music-library workflow and can handle supported conversion, including ATRAC to AAC | No catalog management or format conversion |
| Folder control | Less manual file handling | Full control over the exact folder and filename layout |
| Best choice when | You want software-assisted selection, transfer and conversion | Your library is already tagged and organized and you want a direct copy |
Neither method removes the need for a correct destination and safe disconnection. Music Center is the more managed route; Explorer is the simpler route for a prepared folder tree.
Do not confuse USB-DAC playback with file transfer
The Walkman can also operate as a USB-DAC for listening to audio from a computer. That mode sends the computer’s playback audio to the Walkman’s output; it is not a way to copy music files into internal storage or onto a microSD card. To build the Walkman’s local library, select File Transfer and use Music Center, Explorer or an Android-compatible Mac utility.
Quick Recap
