Connect the NW-ZX900 with USB-C, choose File Transfer, and copy your music into WALKMAN > Internal shared storage > Music or the microSD card’s Music folder. For albums to group correctly, keep Album Artist, Album, Artist, track number, disc number, and year tags consistent; for cover art, use a JPEG or PNG whose filename exactly matches the album-folder name.

What you are transferring to

The Sony NW-ZX900 is an Android-based Walkman Digital Media Player with a 5-inch display. Sony’s US product page listed it at $1,899.99 in 2026; price, availability, preorder status, and delivery estimates can change. The player has approximately 33 GB of actual available internal memory after system use, so the usable space is lower than the device’s nominal storage capacity.

You can copy files to either the player’s internal shared storage or a microSD card installed in the Walkman. Sony’s transfer guide documents both destinations, but it does not state a maximum microSD capacity. Check the help guide for your exact NW-ZX900 model and region before buying a particular card size.

Prepare the music before connecting the Walkman

Check the files and available space

  • Confirm that you own the music or have permission to transfer it for private listening.
  • Estimate the size of the albums you plan to copy and compare it with free internal or microSD storage.
  • Keep the original files in a backup location. A transfer is a copy, not a backup of your computer library.

Choose a stable folder layout

A predictable hierarchy makes the files easy to inspect and move between storage locations:

Music/
  Artist Name/
    2024 - Album Title/
      01 - Track Title.flac
      02 - Track Title.flac

The folder names help you manage files, but the Walkman’s album and artist grouping is driven primarily by embedded metadata. A beautifully organized folder tree cannot correct inconsistent tags inside the audio files.

Normalize the important tags

Before copying, make the following fields agree across every track that belongs to one album:

  • Album Artist: use one value for the album. This is especially important for compilations, where individual tracks may have different performing artists.
  • Album: spell and punctuate the title identically on every track.
  • Artist: enter the performing artist for each track.
  • Track number: include the correct sequence, including leading zeros if your tag editor supports them.
  • Disc number: set this for multi-disc releases so discs do not interleave.
  • Year: use one consistent release year for the album.

Avoid small variations such as “The Band” versus “Band,” different punctuation, trailing spaces, or alternate spellings. Those differences can make one physical album appear as several albums in the library.

Transfer music from Windows with File Explorer

Direct USB copying is the clearest Sony-documented sequence and exposes the destination folders, which makes it easier to diagnose a failed transfer.

1. Connect the Walkman directly

  1. Turn on and unlock the NW-ZX900.
  2. Connect it directly to a computer USB port with the supplied USB Type-C cable when possible. Avoid an unpowered hub during setup and troubleshooting.

Sony warns that some third-party USB-C-to-USB-C cables may charge but fail to carry data. If the player is not detected, return to the supplied cable before trying more complicated fixes.

2. Select the correct USB mode

  1. When the Use USB for notification appears, select File Transfer.
  2. Tap OK.

If no notification appears, unlock the Walkman and open Settings > Connected devices > USB. Choose File Transfer there. The computer cannot browse the music folders while the player is left in a charge-only mode.

3. Open the internal Music folder

  1. In Windows File Explorer, select WALKMAN.
  2. Open Internal shared storage.
  3. Open the existing Music folder.

Do not rename the default Music folder. Using the existing folder keeps the destination predictable for the Walkman’s media scanner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Copy artists, albums, or tracks

Drag an artist folder, an album folder, or individual tracks into the Music folder. You can copy several artists in one operation if the computer has enough free space for the temporary transfer.

Leave the Walkman connected until Windows reports that copying has finished and the file-operation window has closed. Large lossless albums can take longer than their file count suggests.

5. Copy to a microSD card instead

  1. In File Explorer, select the microSD card’s storage location shown under the Walkman.
  2. Open that storage location’s Music folder.
  3. Copy the same artist-and-album hierarchy there.

The card must be mounted and visible before you select it. If it does not appear, solve the connection or storage issue first rather than creating unrelated folders on the computer.

6. Eject safely

After the copy completes, use Windows’ eject command for the Walkman or its mounted storage, then disconnect the cable. Never pull the USB cable while a file is still moving; an incomplete file can be unreadable and may require copying again.

Transfer from macOS

Sony’s current workflow is still USB file transfer followed by copying files into the Music folder. On macOS, keep the NW-ZX900 unlocked, select File Transfer on the player, and open the Walkman’s mounted storage in the file-transfer utility available for your macOS version.

  • Made with a rigid aluminum frame and gold solder inside a precisely engineered chassis
  • Up to 36 hours of 44.1KHz FLAC playback
  • Supported by Android
  • Connect to a PC to access your music collection
  1. Connect the Walkman directly with the supplied USB-C cable.
  2. Choose File Transfer on the player. If necessary, use Settings > Connected devices > USB > File Transfer.
  3. In the transfer utility, open internal shared storage and then Music, or open the microSD card’s Music folder.
  4. Copy your artist and album folders.
  5. Wait for the operation to finish, eject the mounted storage in the utility, and then disconnect.

The exact browser and eject behavior varies with the macOS release and the file-transfer utility, so labels may not look identical to Windows File Explorer. The destination folder sequence remains the same.

Make albums appear correctly in the library

Use folders for maintenance, tags for grouping

Keep one album in one album folder and avoid scattering its tracks across unrelated directories. This makes a missing track easy to find, but the player’s library still reads the metadata embedded in each file. If an album is split or merged unexpectedly, correct the tags on the computer, delete the incorrectly copied versions from the Walkman, and copy the corrected files again.

Handle compilations and guest artists

For a compilation, set the same Album and Album Artist on every track while retaining each track’s individual Artist. A guest artist can remain in the Artist field without changing the shared Album Artist value. This prevents each guest credit from creating a separate album entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle multi-disc albums

Set both track number and disc number. Keep the album title identical across discs unless you intentionally want separate album entries. The disc number tells the player how to order tracks when the release spans more than one disc.

Add cover art that the Walkman can read

For folder-based artwork, rename the image so its filename is exactly the same as the album-folder name, while retaining the image extension, and place it inside that album folder. For example:

Music/Artist Name/2024 - Album Title/
  2024 - Album Title.jpg
  01 - Track Title.flac

Sony lists these displayed cover-art formats: baseline JPEG, progressive JPEG, non-interlaced PNG, and interlaced PNG. If artwork is missing, check the spelling, capitalization, spaces, and extension in both names. An image that is merely similar to the folder name may not be matched.

Internal storage or microSD?

Destination Space information Portability Best use
Internal shared storage Approximately 33 GB actually available after system use on the NW-ZX900. Always installed; moving the library requires another USB copy. A smaller, frequently used collection that should remain with the player.
microSD card Maximum supported capacity is not stated in Sony’s transfer guide; verify it in the exact NW-ZX900 help guide or regional specification. The card can be moved between compatible devices, but it should be ejected and handled carefully. A larger library or a collection you want to move without recopying every file.

Whichever destination you choose, use its Music folder. Do not create a substitute folder with a different name and expect the library scanner to treat it as the standard music location.

File Explorer versus Music Center for PC

Direct folder copying and Sony’s Music Center for PC represent different working styles. The supplied transfer instructions clearly document USB file transfer and the Music folders; they do not establish a complete feature or compatibility matrix for every Music Center for PC release. Treat the table as a decision aid, then confirm support in the current Sony software documentation for your Windows version.

Consideration Windows File Explorer Music Center for PC
Metadata control You edit tags in your chosen tag editor and can inspect the exact folders and filenames being copied. Exact metadata-editing behavior for the NW-ZX900 is not stated in the transfer guide; verify the current version before relying on it.
Batch-transfer convenience Drag complete artist or album folders in one operation. May suit a managed-library workflow, but the supported import and device-transfer steps depend on the installed version.
Troubleshooting visibility Clear: you can see whether WALKMAN, internal shared storage, the card, and Music are present. When a transfer fails, use the direct folder view to determine whether the problem is USB mode, cable, storage, or metadata.

For a first transfer or a device that is not recognized, start with File Explorer because it follows the documented folder path and exposes each decision point.

Choose the right USB cable and connection

Connection choice Reliability guidance What to do if it fails
Supplied USB Type-C cable Preferred starting point; it is the cable Sony supplies for the player. Try a different computer USB port and connect directly, without an unpowered hub.
Third-party USB-C cable Some USB-C-to-USB-C cables may not support data transfer even if they charge the Walkman. Replace it with the supplied cable or a confirmed data-capable cable.

Troubleshoot transfer problems

The USB prompt never appears

  1. Unlock the Walkman.
  2. Open Settings > Connected devices > USB.
  3. Select File Transfer.

Reconnect after changing the mode. A locked screen or charge-only setting can prevent the computer from presenting the storage.

The Walkman is missing from File Explorer

  • Disconnect it and try another USB port on the computer.
  • Connect directly rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • Use the supplied USB-C cable, since some third-party cables do not carry data.
  • Confirm that the Walkman is unlocked and still set to File Transfer.

If it remains absent on one computer, testing another computer helps distinguish a computer-port problem from a player, cable, or USB-mode problem.

The transfer stops or reports an error

  • Check free space in the selected internal or microSD destination.
  • Make sure you opened that destination’s Music folder rather than a different directory.
  • Retry a smaller album to determine whether the issue is space or one particular file.
  • Keep the cable connected until the copy window has finished.

Albums are merged, duplicated, or split

Compare the embedded Album Artist, Album, Artist, track number, and disc number fields. Normalize spelling, punctuation, and spacing, then remove the incorrectly copied versions and transfer the corrected files. Folder names alone will not fix a metadata conflict.

Cover art does not show

  • Confirm that the image filename exactly matches the album-folder name.
  • Keep the image inside that album folder.
  • Use baseline or progressive JPEG, or non-interlaced or interlaced PNG, as listed by Sony.
  • Check that the extension was not changed or hidden by the computer.

The card is not available as a destination

Confirm that the microSD card is seated and mounted, then reopen the Walkman’s storage in File Explorer or the macOS transfer utility. If the card appears but has no Music folder, use the card’s existing music location as documented for the player; do not format the player from the computer to solve a folder problem.

Actions to avoid

  • Do not rename the default Music folder.
  • Do not copy music into unrelated folders and assume the player will group it correctly.
  • Do not format the Walkman from the computer as a first-line troubleshooting step.
  • Do not disconnect the USB cable while data is moving.
  • Do not assume every USB-C-to-USB-C cable supports data transfer.

Verify the library after copying

  1. Open the Walkman’s Music library after the transfer has completed.
  2. Check one ordinary album, one compilation, and one multi-disc album if your collection includes them.
  3. Confirm track order, Album Artist grouping, and artwork.
  4. If one album is wrong, correct its tags on the computer and recopy that album rather than changing unrelated files.

Music transferred to the NW-ZX900 is for private use under Sony’s guide. Other uses require permission from the relevant copyright holders.
