To transfer music to a dedicated digital audio player, first identify the exact player model, then connect it with the correct USB cable and copy audio files into the folder specified by that model’s manual. On players that support ordinary file transfer, this is a straightforward drag-and-drop job in Windows File Explorer or macOS Finder. Other models require a manufacturer application, a particular USB mode, or a different destination such as a microSD card.
The model is the deciding factor: it determines the folder name, supported formats, computer software, USB setting, storage targets and whether playlists can be transferred. The procedures below use Sony Walkman documentation as clearly labeled examples, not as universal instructions for every player.
Identify the player before you copy anything
Look at the label on the player, its settings screen, the original packaging or the manual and record the complete model number. “Walkman,” “MP3 player” or “digital audio player” is not specific enough. Two generations from the same manufacturer can use different folders or software.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Model and region: Write down the full model designation, including letters and numbers. Support pages and manuals are usually model-specific.
- Computer operating system: Note whether you are using Windows or macOS and, if relevant, whether the computer is managed by an organization.
- Storage destination: Determine whether the player has internal storage, a removable microSD card, or both. A card may need to be selected as a separate destination.
- USB behavior: Find out whether the player offers a “File Transfer,” “MTP,” “USB storage” or similar mode when connected.
- Supported audio: Check the manual for accepted file formats, sample rates, bit depths, maximum folder depth and filename restrictions.
- Transfer method: Confirm whether the maker documents Explorer/Finder copying, a desktop application, or both.
Do not assume that instructions for one model apply to another. Sony’s NW-A55-series guide documents direct copying, while Sony help pages for other generations list combinations of Media Go, Content Transfer, Music Center for PC, Explorer and Finder. The NW-A55 guide identifies itself as a 2018 edition and notes that its content can change with product updates, so check the current help page for your exact device as well.

Prepare the computer and music files
Use files you are authorized to transfer
Copy only music that you own or are otherwise permitted to use on another device. A purchase or subscription does not necessarily mean that the downloaded file is unrestricted. Sony’s documented iTunes drag-and-drop workflow does not support DRM-protected files. Subscription downloads can also be protected. There is no supported transfer step that removes copy protection; obtain an unprotected file through an authorized source instead.
Check the player’s formats and space
Compare each file’s format with the model’s compatibility list. A file can copy successfully and still fail to appear or play if the player does not support its codec, container, sample rate or bit depth. Check free space on internal memory and on any card before starting. Leave room for the player’s database and firmware rather than filling the medium to its last megabyte.
Organize without changing required names
Create a temporary folder on the computer containing only the albums or tracks you intend to transfer. Keep the original files untouched so you can retry after correcting a format or folder problem. Do not rename the player’s required destination folders. Sony specifically warns NW-A55 owners not to change root-folder names, place music outside the designated folders, or format the player’s memory on a computer.

Use a reliable connection
Use the supplied USB cable whenever possible. If it is missing or damaged, check the model’s cable specification before buying a replacement; a charge-only cable may not carry data. Connect directly to the computer rather than through a hub when troubleshooting, because Sony notes that a USB hub can prevent recognition or transfer on some systems.

Windows: general drag-and-drop procedure
Use this workflow only when the manual says the player supports file-manager transfer. The folder name in step 4 is model-dependent; do not substitute the name from another device.
- Connect the player. Turn it on, unlock it if necessary, and attach it to the computer with the data cable supplied for the model.
- Select the USB function. If the player asks what the connection should do, choose File Transfer or the equivalent data-transfer option, not charging-only.
- Open File Explorer. In Windows, select This PC and open the player’s device entry. If the model presents internal memory and a card separately, identify the destination named in the manual.
- Open the designated music folder. Use the exact folder and hierarchy specified by the manufacturer. Some devices have a folder named
MUSIC; others use a different structure. - Copy the files. In a second File Explorer window, select the prepared tracks or album folders, then drag them into the destination. You can also use Copy and Paste.
- Wait for completion. Keep the player connected while Windows finishes the copy. Large lossless files or many albums can take time even when the progress window appears idle.
- Safely disconnect. Close any open player folders, use Windows’ eject control, and disconnect only after copying has completed. Follow any additional shutdown instruction in the player’s manual.
If the manual specifies separate locations for internal memory and removable storage, repeat the operation for the intended destination. Never improvise a new top-level folder because the player may index only its documented locations.
Sony NW-A55-series example
Sony’s NW-A55-series Help Guide is an explicit example of direct Windows transfer. After connecting the player, open the WALKMAN device in File Explorer, open MUSIC, and drag files or folders into that folder. Wait until the copy finishes before disconnecting. The guide also documents transferring music to a microSD card: select the card’s destination described in the guide rather than placing files in an arbitrary folder.
For this family, the folder names and hierarchy are functional. Sony warns against changing root-folder names, copying music outside the designated folders, disconnecting during transfer or formatting the player’s memory from the computer. Those cautions are specific to the documented model and illustrate why a generic “copy files anywhere” rule is unsafe.

Windows and iTunes: a limited Sony Walkman workflow
Sony also describes dragging music from iTunes for Windows into a Walkman’s MUSIC folder, but only for Walkman models that support drag-and-drop. Confirm that capability in the exact model’s manual before trying it.
- Connect the Walkman with its supplied USB cable.
- Choose the player’s file-transfer USB option if prompted.
- Open File Explorer and open the Walkman’s documented
MUSICdestination. - Open iTunes for Windows and select the tracks you want to copy.
- Drag the selected tracks into the open music folder.
- Wait for Windows to finish copying, then eject the Walkman safely.
This process copies compatible, unprotected audio files; it is not a synchronization service. Sony states that DRM-protected files are unsupported, playlists cannot be transferred by this drag-and-drop method, and content beyond a model’s permitted folder-hierarchy limit will not be playable. If you need a playlist, recreate it on the player using files that have already been copied, or use a model-specific application that explicitly supports playlist transfer.
macOS: Finder and model-specific applications
Finder copying
For a model that documents Finder transfer, connect the player, choose its file-transfer mode, open Finder and select the device in the sidebar. Open the required music folder, then drag compatible files or folders from a Finder window into it. Leave the device connected until the copy is complete and eject it from Finder before unplugging.
Sony’s NW-A55 documentation describes Finder as a direct-transfer route as well as Windows Explorer. The same guide also describes Content Transfer for a Mac workflow using Finder or iTunes as the source. The destination and folder rules remain those of the NW-A55; they should not be generalized to every Walkman or every digital audio player.

When Finder does not expose a usable folder
If the player appears in Finder but has no documented writable music folder, stop rather than creating one at random. The model may require a manufacturer application, a particular driver, a different USB mode or a card reader. Search the manufacturer’s support page by the full model number and use the current macOS instructions for that model.
Choosing between file-manager transfer and manufacturer software
Use the method the exact model supports. The practical differences are summarized below.
| Method | Model support | Windows/macOS | Playlist handling | Format conversion | Storage target | DRM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explorer or Finder drag-and-drop | Only models that document direct file copying | Usually both, but verify the manual | Normally copies audio files, not playlists | Not inherent; files must already be compatible | Internal memory or a documented card folder | Protected files remain unsupported |
| iTunes-for-Windows drag-and-drop | Supported Sony Walkman models only | Windows with iTunes | Sony says iTunes playlists do not transfer this way | Not stated in Sony’s described workflow | The Walkman folder selected in Explorer | Sony says DRM-protected files are unsupported |
| Manufacturer transfer application | Only models and software versions listed by the manufacturer | Varies by application and release | May offer library or playlist features; verify for the model | Depends on the application; do not assume conversion | May expose internal and/or card storage | Depends on file rights and application support; protected files are not automatically transferable |
| Copy to a card with a reader | Models that support removable storage and document this route | Depends on the computer and card reader | Usually file copying rather than playlist synchronization | No automatic conversion | microSD card | Requires files the player can legally read and play |
Sony’s support material illustrates the variation: one model may support Explorer and Finder, while another help page lists Content Transfer, Media Go or another legacy utility. Do not install an old program merely because it appears in a forum post. Confirm that the software is still available, supports your operating system and is documented for your model.

- Insert a compatible, properly formatted card while the player is powered down if the manual requires that procedure.
- Reconnect the player or use the documented card-transfer route.
- In Explorer, Finder or the manufacturer application, select the card’s destination rather than internal memory.
- Copy files into the music folder required for the card.
- Wait for completion, eject the player or card safely and allow the player to rescan its library.
Do not format the player’s memory from a computer unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to do so. A format can erase music and system data and may create a file system the player does not support.
Confirm that the transfer worked
After reconnecting or opening the player’s library, check one album and one individual track rather than assuming that a completed copy equals a playable file.
- Confirm that the files exist in the exact folder the manual names.
- Check that the number of tracks and approximate sizes match the computer’s source folder.
- Start playback and verify that the player reads the codec and metadata.
- If the player has a library-scan or database-refresh command, run it according to the manual.
- For a card destination, verify that the player is reading the card and not showing only internal storage.
Keep the original computer files until playback has been verified. A copy operation can finish while an incompatible file remains unusable.
Troubleshooting transfer problems
The computer does not show the player
- Check both ends of the cable and try another known data-capable cable that meets the model’s specification.
- Unlock the player and select File Transfer when its USB prompt appears.
- Connect directly to the computer instead of through a USB hub; Sony identifies hubs as a possible cause of transfer failure.
- Try another USB port and restart the player and computer if the device remains absent.
- Check the model’s support page for a required driver or desktop application.
The player appears but copying fails
- Check free space on the selected internal memory or card.
- Confirm that the connection is direct if a hub was involved.
- Copy one small, known-compatible file first. If that works, add albums in smaller batches to identify a problematic file or path.
- Do not disconnect while Windows, Finder or the manufacturer application reports activity.
Files copied but songs do not appear
- Verify the exact folder and hierarchy required by the model; for the NW-A55 example, music belongs in
MUSIC. - Check that the player supports the file’s format and encoding parameters.
- Look for a library-rescan command or restart the player so it can index new content.
- Ensure the files were copied to the intended storage. A card can be mounted separately from internal memory.
- Shorten unusually deep paths or filenames only if the manual identifies a hierarchy or naming limit.
An iTunes track will not copy
Check whether the file is DRM-protected. Sony’s iTunes instructions exclude protected content, and subscription downloads may have similar restrictions. Do not attempt to remove the protection. Use a legitimately transferable version in a format supported by the player. Also remember that the described iTunes process transfers selected audio files, not iTunes playlists.
The transfer was interrupted
Do not unplug immediately if the computer still shows a copy operation. Once the system is stable, eject the player using the operating system’s control and reconnect it. Inspect the destination for partial files and recopy affected tracks. Sony warns that disconnecting during transfer can damage data or leave files unusable.
The player plays some files but not others
Compare a working and failing file’s format, codec, sample rate, bit depth and metadata against the manual. A folder can contain a mixture of supported and unsupported files; successful copying does not convert them. Re-encode only from an authorized source and only when the player’s documentation permits that format.
A practical decision path
- Need only local audio files? If the manual supports Explorer or Finder, use direct copying and the documented music folder.
- Starting from iTunes on Windows? Use the Sony drag-and-drop procedure only when the Walkman model is listed as supporting it. Expect files, not playlists, and exclude DRM-protected tracks.
- Need playlists, library management or model-specific syncing? Check the manufacturer’s current application for the exact model and operating system.
- Need more capacity? Add a compatible microSD card only when the player supports it, then use the card destination and folder rules in its manual.
- Nothing is recognized? Work through cable, USB mode, direct connection, storage and model-specific software checks before changing folders or formatting anything.
What to remember
There is no universal folder or transfer application for dedicated audio players. The reliable sequence is model identification, compatibility and rights checks, the manufacturer’s documented destination, an uninterrupted copy, and a safe eject. Sony’s NW-A55 guide demonstrates that ordinary drag-and-drop can be all you need, while Sony’s other support pages demonstrate why a different model may require different software. Treat the model manual as the authority at every step.
