You cannot transfer a Mafia III: Definitive Edition campaign save or achievement progress from PS4 or Xbox One to the newer-generation edition on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. 2K Support says the behavior is intentional. The supported information available for this game provides no cloud, USB, account-linking, or other workaround, so moving to the new-generation edition means starting the campaign again and earning its achievements again.
This applies specifically to Mafia III: Definitive Edition, the Lincoln Clay game. It should not be confused with Mafia: Definitive Edition, the separate remake about Tommy Angelo.
The short answer: there is no supported transfer
If you finished part of Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PS4 or Xbox One, that progress does not carry into the newer-generation edition on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. You should plan on a new campaign, not a continuation of the old one.

This is not limited to one type of progress. The policy covers the campaign save itself and achievement progress. Mission completion, district control, equipment, money, collectibles, upgrades, and other state stored in the old save are not imported. Achievements earned on the old version are not carried into the destination version either.

2K Support representative 2K Zer0 gave the direct answer in a support response posted October 8, 2026: “This is intended. Save Files and Achievements will not transfer over from your old console, to your new console.” That wording describes a deliberate compatibility rule rather than a temporary outage or a setting that can be corrected.
What transfers between generations
The cross-generation transfer policy is simple: nothing from your old Mafia III: Definitive Edition progression is carried into the newer-generation edition. The affected source and destination combinations are:

The same rule applies whether you are moving from a physical copy or a digital copy. The issue is the old-generation save and the destination edition’s compatibility, not whether the game was originally installed from a disc or downloaded from a store.
Because the policy is intentional, deleting local data, reinstalling the game, changing a console setting, or signing out and back in will not turn an old-generation save into a compatible new-generation save. Those actions can affect what data is visible on a console, but they do not create an import function that 2K has not provided.
What to expect on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
Your campaign starts as new progression
When you launch the newer-generation edition, do not expect your previous chapter, district-control state, weapons, money, collectibles, or mission history to appear. The official answer gives no supported import operation, and it identifies the old save as non-transferable. Plan for a fresh campaign rather than a continuation of Lincoln Clay’s previous story.
A new-game screen or an empty save list on the new console is therefore consistent with the published policy. It does not, by itself, prove that your PS4 or Xbox One save was corrupted. The destination edition is not being told to resume the old campaign because that cross-generation handoff is not supported.
Achievements must be earned again
The same statement explicitly includes achievements. Trophies or achievements earned while playing the PS4 or Xbox One version are not carried into the newer-generation version under this upgrade path. Treat the destination edition as a separate progression record for completion purposes.

Your old console copy is not erased
“Does not transfer” describes the move to the newer-generation edition; it does not say that the original console’s local save is automatically deleted. If you want to preserve the old playthrough, avoid removing the old game and its saved data until you have confirmed that you no longer need it. The old save still cannot be imported into the new-generation edition.

Keeping the old installation is useful if you want to revisit a completed mission, compare your previous choices, or finish an unfinished run on the original version. It is preservation, not a migration step.
Why cloud, USB, and a 2K account do not solve this
Cloud synchronization
Cloud storage can synchronize data that a platform treats as compatible, but the 2K response does not identify Mafia III: Definitive Edition saves as cross-generation compatible. It provides no supported cloud-migration procedure. A save appearing in online storage is therefore not evidence that the newer-generation edition can read it.
Cloud backup and game-version conversion are different functions. A platform may successfully upload an old save for safekeeping while the newer edition refuses to list it as usable data. If that happens, repeatedly downloading the same file will not change its format or make it an approved import.
USB copying
Copying a PS4 or Xbox One save to removable storage does not change the save’s game-version format or compatibility status. No official source supplies a USB conversion method for this title, so do not follow guides that promise to edit, rename, or manually inject the file.
Unverified file-editing instructions also create a separate risk: they can overwrite the only copy of an old playthrough. If preserving that save matters, keep the original data untouched rather than experimenting with a supposed conversion.
2K account linking
Signing into the same 2K account on both consoles should not be presented as a campaign-save transfer. The account-related information discussed by 2K concerns loyalty rewards, which are separate from story progression and achievement records. Account login cannot be used as a confirmed import mechanism for this game.
An account can identify you across products or make an eligible reward available, but that is not the same as storing Lincoln Clay’s mission state. A successful account sign-in, restored profile name, or visible reward does not demonstrate that the old campaign has moved.
Generation labels do not change the rule
Support and store pages may call PS4 and Xbox One “Gen 8” and PS5 and Xbox Series X|S “Gen 9.” Those labels describe the console generations, not different save-backup settings. Whether a page uses generation numbers or the console names, the relevant combination remains an old-generation Mafia III: Definitive Edition save and a newer-generation edition.
The transfer question is also separate from backward compatibility. If a console can run an older version of a game, that does not mean the native newer-generation edition will import its save. Readers should identify which software is actually launching before assuming that a console upgrade has preserved progression.

Make sure you have the right Mafia game
Search results and support pages use very similar names, which can produce the wrong answer. The two titles are distinct:

The similarly titled 2K article Mafia: Definitive Edition Now on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is about Tommy Angelo’s game, not Mafia III. That article was published July 28, 2026, updated October 8, 2026, and discusses an August 14, 2026 release for that separately titled game. Its wording must not be used as proof of a Mafia III release date or transfer path.
Check the title before troubleshooting
- Look for the complete game name in your console library, store page, or installed-game details.
- Confirm that the title contains “Mafia III: Definitive Edition,” not “Mafia: Definitive Edition.”
- On Xbox, distinguish the Xbox One installation from the store listing named “Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S.”
- On PlayStation, verify whether you are launching the PS4 software or the newer-generation edition on PS5.
- Match the protagonist if you are checking screenshots or guides: Lincoln Clay means Mafia III; Tommy Angelo means the first game.
Identifying the Xbox Series X|S destination edition
Microsoft’s official store lists Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S as a distinct edition, published by 2K and developed by Hangar 13. The listing describes it as optimized for Xbox Series X|S and says it includes the base game, story downloadable content, and bonus packs. See the official Microsoft Store listing when checking the exact destination title.
That store information confirms which Xbox edition you are looking at; it does not promise that an Xbox One save becomes readable on Xbox Series X|S. Buying or downloading the destination edition is consequently an edition change, not a save-conversion service.
Do not infer a transfer feature from the words “optimized for Xbox Series X|S,” the inclusion of downloadable content, or the publisher and developer names. Those details identify the product and its included content. They do not override 2K’s separate statement about saves and achievements.

Purchasing the appropriate newer-generation release may give you the version intended for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, but it does not purchase a campaign import. Budget your decision around a fresh playthrough and a new achievement run. No current price, discount, or store promotion changes the compatibility rule.
On Xbox, use the exact Series X|S product name when checking ownership or availability. On PlayStation, verify the edition shown in your library before launching. If a store page offers an older-generation version or a similarly titled first-game remake, that is a product-identification issue, not evidence that your Mafia III save can transfer.
A safe way to move forward
- Preserve the old playthrough. Leave the PS4 or Xbox One installation and its saved data intact if you may want to revisit that campaign. Do not delete the only copy while testing downloads or account settings.
- Record your old progress if useful. Note completed missions, collectibles, or achievement goals you may want to repeat. This record helps you plan the replay, but it is not an import file.
- Verify the destination title. On the new console, check that the installed software is Mafia III: Definitive Edition for the appropriate newer-generation platform, rather than the separate first-game remake.
- Check the platform edition. On Xbox, look for Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S. On PS5, confirm whether the icon launches the PS4 software or the newer-generation edition.
- Launch without expecting an import menu. The official policy supplies no migration step. If the destination edition offers only new-game progression, that is consistent with the stated compatibility rule.
- Start the campaign again. Recreate your progress in the newer-generation edition; the previous mission and collectible state cannot be carried across by a supported method.

“I upgraded my console and the game is asking me to start over.”
That is the expected result for the newer-generation edition. The support response classifies both the save and achievements as non-transferable, so starting over is not evidence that your old console failed to upload correctly.

“My cloud save is visible, but the new version does not load it.”
Visibility in cloud storage and compatibility with a different game edition are separate issues. The available official guidance does not provide a way to make that save readable by the newer-generation Mafia III edition.
“Can I copy the file with a USB drive?”
No supported USB process is identified. A copied file remains an old-generation save and is not converted merely by being moved to another storage device.
“Will signing into my 2K account restore my progress?”
No. Account-linked loyalty rewards are separate from campaign saves and achievements. The support response does not describe account login as a migration method.

Whichever option you choose, do not delete the old save in the hope that the console will recreate it in a compatible form. The official policy gives no reason to expect that behavior, and preserving the old data costs less risk than trying an unsupported conversion.
Bottom line for buying the newer edition
If faster performance or newer-generation optimization is your reason for moving to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, you can use the appropriate Mafia III: Definitive Edition release, but budget time for a fresh playthrough. The Xbox Series X|S listing confirms the destination edition and its included content; neither that listing nor 2K’s support response offers a way to import the PS4 or Xbox One campaign.
Keep the old installation if preserving the completed playthrough matters, verify the exact game title before troubleshooting, and make the purchase decision with the achievement reset and new campaign in mind. The clearest expectation is also the safest one: your old Mafia III save stays with the old-generation version, while PS5 or Xbox Series X|S starts a separate progression record.
