There is no single, officially documented Kindle-to-Kobo migration. Handle it as two separate tasks: move a book file that Kobo can legally read, and preserve Kindle highlights or notes in a separate record. A non-protected EPUB or PDF can be sideloaded to a Kobo eReader by USB. Some Kobo models also accept non-protected files through Google Drive. Kindle Store purchases and their annotations do not automatically become Kobo books or Kobo notes.
This guide explains what works, what does not, and how to avoid losing your reading history while changing ecosystems.
The short answer
- Books: Copy a non-protected EPUB or PDF to the Kobo using the documented USB process. A Kindle Store download is not automatically a Kobo-compatible EPUB.
- Protected Kindle purchases: Kobo’s support documentation does not provide a method for converting Kindle Store DRM into a Kobo-readable file. Do not try to bypass DRM.
- Highlights and notes: Kindle synchronization keeps annotations available across Kindle apps and devices, but that is ecosystem synchronization, not an export into Kobo’s annotation list.
- Alternative delivery: Forma, Sage, Elipsa, Elipsa 2E and Libra Colour models can use Kobo’s Google Drive workflow for eligible, non-protected files when the device software supports it.
- Existing downloads: Amazon announced that Download & Transfer via USB would no longer be available from February 26, 2025. That retirement did not create a supported Kindle-to-Kobo export path.
Why a Kindle library does not simply appear on Kobo
A purchase is a license, not a universal file
A Kindle Store purchase is delivered under Amazon’s account and rights system. Even when the title is technically an ebook, the downloaded object may be protected and tied to Kindle software or approved Kindle hardware. Dragging a Kindle app cache, a device folder or a Kindle download onto a Kobo does not turn it into an authorized Kobo book.

They do not document importing a Kindle Store license, authenticating an Amazon purchase on Kobo, or converting Kindle protection. The practical test is therefore not “Did I buy the book?” but “Do I have an authorized, non-protected file that Kobo accepts?”

Format support is not the same as DRM support
Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI among its supported formats. Kobo Original and Kobo Wi Fi are listed as not supporting EPUB3. Those format names describe file containers; they do not remove encryption or change the terms attached to a book.
The USB sideload instructions specifically cover non-protected EPUB and PDF files. Kobo says Adobe DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files require Adobe Digital Editions when they are exported to a non-Kobo device. That workflow applies to compatible Adobe DRM content; it does not establish a way to unlock or convert Kindle Store titles.
Choose the route that matches your file and goal
| Route | Use it when | What you need | What it delivers | Kindle highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USB sideload | You have a non-protected EPUB or PDF and a computer. | Kobo eReader, compatible USB data cable and computer. | Book copied to that Kobo device and imported locally. | Not transferred. |
| Google Drive | You own an eligible Kobo model and the file is non-protected. | Supported Kobo model, current-enough software, Google Drive access and a file in the Rakuten Kobo folder. | File downloaded to the eReader after synchronization. | Not transferred. |
| Adobe Digital Editions | You have compatible Adobe DRM EPUB or PDF content. | Authorized Adobe Digital Editions workflow and a file whose rights permit it. | Potentially transfers that Adobe-protected content; it is not a Kindle conversion tool. | Not transferred. |
| Kindle synchronization | You want to keep reading and annotating inside Kindle apps or Kindle devices. | The same Amazon account and supported Kindle surfaces. | Notes and highlights remain available within the Kindle ecosystem. | Preserved inside Kindle, not imported to Kobo. |
Prepare each title before moving anything
Do this inventory first. It prevents you from deleting a Kindle copy while assuming that Kobo can open it.
- List the titles you want on Kobo. Record the author, edition or ISBN shown in your Kindle library, and whether the book has notes you cannot replace.
- Identify the actual source file. A DRM-free EPUB or PDF that you obtained from a publisher, library, author or other authorized source is a candidate for sideloading. A Kindle Store download or Kindle app cache is not automatically a candidate.
- Check protection before copying. If the file asks for an Adobe authorization or is otherwise encrypted, follow the rights holder’s supported workflow. Do not rename an extension, strip encryption or use an unofficial DRM-removal process.
- Keep the Kindle original available. Leave the title and its annotations in your Kindle account or on a Kindle device until you have verified the Kobo copy and separately saved important notes.
- Confirm the Kobo model. The broad Kobo format list does not mean every model handles every format. Older models have limitations, including the documented EPUB3 limitation for Kobo Original and Kobo Wi Fi.
Method 1: Sideload a non-protected EPUB or PDF by USB
This is Kobo’s broadly documented computer method for an unprotected file. It is usually the clearest option when you have a computer and a compatible cable.
- Turn on the Kobo. Wake the eReader and let it finish starting up before connecting it.
- Connect it to the computer. Use a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable. Kobo should display a prompt asking whether to connect to the computer.
- Choose Connect on the eReader. The device should mount as a drive named
KOBOeReaderor a similar Kobo drive name. - Open the Kobo drive on the computer. Locate the non-protected EPUB or PDF you have permission to use. Do not copy a Kindle application folder, a cached book, or an encrypted purchase merely because it has an ebook-looking filename.
- Copy the file to the Kobo drive. You can place the book in the drive’s main area or an ordinary folder you create for organization. Keep the original file on the computer until import is confirmed.
- Eject the Kobo safely. Use the computer’s eject command before unplugging. Removing it while a file is still being written can leave an incomplete book or damage the device’s storage index.
- Wait for import. After disconnection, Kobo scans the new file and adds it to the library. Large PDFs can take longer to process than text-heavy EPUBs.
- Open and verify the book. Check the cover, table of contents, several chapters, font controls and page turns. If the book is a PDF, confirm that the page size is usable on your Kobo screen; a technically successful import may still require zooming and panning.
What USB sideloading does not do
The imported item is local to that eReader. Kobo’s instructions do not make a USB-sideloaded file appear automatically in your other Kobo apps or eReaders after synchronization. Treat the computer copy as your backup and repeat the sideload on another device if you need the same file there.
If the Kobo drive never appears
- Unlock the eReader and look for the connection prompt; selecting charge-only mode will not mount storage.
- Try another USB port and a known data-capable cable.
- Restart both the Kobo and the computer, then reconnect after the Kobo has fully started.
- Check whether the computer can see another removable drive. A missing drive can indicate a cable, port or operating-system issue rather than a book-format problem.
If the file is visible but the book is missing
- Confirm the copy completed before ejecting.
- Check the filename extension and make sure the file is not zero bytes or still inside a compressed archive.
- Try a known-good, non-protected EPUB or PDF. If that imports, the original file’s protection or structure is the likely cause.
- Remove only the failed copy from the Kobo drive after safely reconnecting; keep the original elsewhere.
Method 2: Add a book with Google Drive
Kobo documents Google Drive as a cloud-delivery option for a limited set of models. Its help page states: “If you have a non-protected ePub or PDF file, you can add it to your eReader using Google Drive.” This is a delivery convenience, not a way to change a Kindle license or remove DRM.

- On a computer or mobile device, place the authorized, non-protected EPUB or PDF in the Rakuten Kobo folder that Kobo identifies for Drive imports.
- On the eligible Kobo, open the Google Drive or cloud-import function and sign in or authorize the account if prompted.
- Synchronize the eReader so it can see the file.
- Select the file for download, then wait for the transfer to finish before opening it.
- Open the book and check the layout, chapters and reading position.
If the file is encrypted, Drive does not solve that problem. Kobo says encrypted DRM files require Adobe Digital Editions, and the relevant DRM scheme and publisher terms still determine whether the file can be used on that device.
How to handle DRM-protected titles
There are two separate questions: whether the file is protected, and whether the protection system is one Kobo and the rights holder support. An Adobe DRM EPUB or PDF may have an authorized Digital Editions path. A Kindle Store title remains governed by Amazon’s delivery and licensing system; Kobo’s instructions do not document converting it for Kobo.
Do not rely on advice that recommends changing a file extension, copying hidden Kindle folders, or removing protection. Those actions can violate the book’s terms, produce an unusable file, and leave you without a reliable copy. If a title is essential, keep reading it in Kindle, look for an authorized DRM-free edition from the publisher or author, or buy a Kobo edition when available. None of those options transfers the original Kindle annotations automatically.
Preserve Kindle highlights and notes separately
What Kindle synchronization provides
Amazon’s Kindle help describes synchronization of books, notes and text highlights across Kindle surfaces. That lets you continue viewing annotations in supported Kindle apps and devices using the same account. Handwritten annotations are treated separately and are available across Kindle Scribe devices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Synchronization should be understood as access within Kindle, not as a portable annotation file that Kobo can import. Kobo’s annotation list is built for books opened in Kobo’s environment; a matching title in both stores does not give Kobo the other vendor’s note database.

A practical preservation routine
- Prioritize irreplaceable notes. Start with research quotations, work notes, addresses, study material and highlights that you would struggle to recreate.
- Open the title’s notes or highlights view on a Kindle device or app. Use the view your current Kindle software provides and make an independent copy in a personal document, note system or secure archive.
- Capture context. For each entry, record the book title, author, chapter or location shown by Kindle, and your own explanation of why the passage matters. Location numbers can differ between editions.
- Keep the original Kindle access until checking the archive. Open several entries from the saved document and compare them with the Kindle view before removing downloads or changing accounts.
- Only then load a Kobo-readable file. If you have a separate non-protected EPUB or PDF, sideload it and treat the saved notes as a companion reference rather than expecting them to appear at the same passages.
Different editions can have different pagination, paragraph breaks and even altered text. A highlight copied from one edition may not land at the same location in another, even when the title and author are identical.
Kobo annotation export is not Kindle annotation import
Kobo can export annotations from eligible books purchased from Kobo or Kobo Plus. Depending on the book and its permissions, the export can be a PDF, HTML, TXT or Markdown file. Kobo warns that the feature does not work for every book and can depend on author approval. Exported files remain in the account for 30 days.
| Feature | Supported source | Output or scope | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle sync | Books, notes and text highlights in the Kindle ecosystem | Access across supported Kindle surfaces | Not a Kobo import. |
| Kobo annotation export | Eligible Kobo-purchased or Kobo Plus books | PDF, HTML, TXT or Markdown | May require author approval; files remain available for 30 days. |
| Readwise integration | Kobo annotations managed through the service described by Kobo | Annotation viewing and management with supported exports | The documented feature does not establish direct import of Kindle annotations into Kobo books. |
If you are moving from Kindle, the Kobo export function is useful only after you have annotations in Kobo. It cannot reach backward into your Kindle library and attach old highlights to a newly sideloaded book.

In an Amazon staff forum response dated February 2025, Amazon announced that Download & Transfer via USB would no longer be available starting February 26, 2025. Amazon also said content downloaded previously could still be read, and that Kindle apps and supported Wi-Fi Kindles remained available.
This change matters because older migration guides may tell you to download a Kindle file to a computer and then copy it elsewhere. That historical instruction is no longer a dependable route for new downloads, and it never supplied a supported method for importing Kindle highlights into Kobo.

“My Kindle book has an EPUB-looking extension.”
An extension alone does not prove that the file is unprotected or authorized for Kobo. Check the source and protection status. Use the Kobo USB process only when you have a legitimate, non-protected file.

Kindle software can authenticate and decrypt content that a Kobo cannot. Successful reading in the Kindle app does not demonstrate cross-device compatibility.

“My highlights still sync on Kindle, so why are they absent on Kobo?”
Kindle synchronization and Kobo annotation storage are separate systems. Keep the Kindle view or an independent archive for those notes; there is no documented automatic handoff.
“Google Drive shows the file, but Kobo refuses it.”
Verify that the model is one of the supported models, the software is current enough, and the file is non-protected. Google Drive changes delivery, not the file’s format or rights.
“The EPUB imports but looks wrong.”
Check whether the file is a valid EPUB and whether its design depends on features your model does not support. A model listed as not supporting EPUB3 may require an EPUB2 edition. For complex layouts, compare an authorized alternate edition rather than editing the file blindly.
“The PDF is readable only after constant zooming.”
That is a layout limitation of fixed-page PDF content, not necessarily a transfer failure. Look for an authorized reflowable EPUB edition if comfortable reading is more important than preserving the original page design.

- Do you have a non-protected EPUB or PDF? Use USB, or Google Drive if your Kobo model is eligible.
- Do you have only a Kindle Store purchase? Keep it in Kindle unless you obtain a separate authorized Kobo-readable edition. Do not assume the Kindle download can be copied.
- Are the annotations important? Preserve them independently before changing devices or deleting downloads.
- Do you need the book on several Kobo devices? Plan for device-local sideloading; do not assume a USB copy will populate Kobo apps or other eReaders.
- Is the file Adobe DRM-protected? Use the authorized Adobe Digital Editions route if the rights holder supports that device; this is distinct from Kindle Store content.
- Are you following an old guide mentioning Download & Transfer via USB? Treat it as outdated for new downloads after February 26, 2025.
What a successful move looks like
You have a Kobo-readable file obtained under terms that allow the transfer, the file opens and displays correctly on the target model, and your important Kindle highlights exist in a separate archive you can search. That is the reliable outcome supported by the current workflows: the reading file moves through an authorized file-delivery path, while annotations remain a separately managed record.
