To move your GTA Online profile from PS4 to PS5, sign in to the Rockstar Games account linked to that profile, open GTA Online on PS5, choose Online on the landing page, select the PS4 profile, and confirm migration. If you skip the prompt the first time, open Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile later. Your PS4 profile stays on PS4, but progress made on PS4 and PS5 will no longer sync after the move.
What this process actually transfers
This is a migration of a GTA Online profile between console generations, not a general copy of every GTA V save. The supported move covered here is PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5. Rockstar’s migration instructions were last updated February 24, 2026.
The destination PS5 must have access to the PS5 version of GTA Online, and you must use the Rockstar Games account associated with the PS4 profile. The instructions do not require a particular accessory or a physical disc. If you already have legitimate digital or other access to the destination version, do not buy another copy solely for migration.

Before you start
- Sign in on PS5 with the Rockstar Games account connected to the GTA Online profile you intend to move.
- Make sure GTA Online is installed and can be launched on the PS5.
- Decide whether you are ready to treat PS4 and PS5 as separate progression states after migration. The original profile remains on PS4, but later changes on either generation are not synchronized.
- If you use Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack benefits, confirm that the PS4 character you migrate is the one that had access to those benefits.
- Have both the PlayStation account and Rockstar account details available if you need to verify which identity is linked. Migration is tied to the Rockstar profile, not simply to the console on which you are playing.
Migration is account-specific. A PS5 can show a profile-selection prompt, but selecting the wrong Rockstar account can make the expected character unavailable. Sign out and use the account associated with the intended PS4 profile before trying again.

Step-by-step: migrate GTA Online from PS4 to PS5
1. Sign in to the associated Rockstar Games account
On the PS5, use the Rockstar Games account linked to the PS4 GTA Online profile. This association is the key identity check for the migration; the procedure is not a manual character export that lets you choose an unrelated account.
2. Launch GTA Online on PS5
Start the PS5 version and wait for the GTA Online landing page. Choose Online from that page rather than entering another mode first.
3. Select the PS4 profile
The game presents the PS4 profile available for migration. Select the profile you want to move, review the prompt, and confirm. Do not confirm until the displayed profile is the one you recognize, particularly if the account has more than one character or has been used on multiple consoles.

Rockstar says an alert reports successful completion. Let the migration finish before closing the game or changing accounts. The alert confirms the profile migration; it does not mean that future PS4 and PS5 activity will share one live progression record.
5. Use the fallback menu if you declined the first prompt
If you rejected or skipped migration on first entry, start GTA Online again and open Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile. Follow the same profile-selection and confirmation prompts. The menu route is the official way to begin later instead of relying on the initial landing-page offer.
What carries over from PS4 to PS5

“Transfers” means the item is part of the migrated profile under the conditions Rockstar specifies. It does not create a shared, continuously updated wallet or character between two generations.
The most important limitation: no cross-generation syncing
After migration, the PS4 profile remains on the older console, but Rockstar states that GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced. Think of the migration as establishing a starting state on PS5. If you subsequently earn money, buy property, change a character, or otherwise advance on one generation, those changes should be treated as belonging to that generation’s separate progression state.

Choose one generation as your primary game before making substantial new progress. Returning to PS4 does not merge its later activity into PS5, and playing on PS5 does not update the PS4 state.
How to plan around the split
Finish any last PS4 session you want represented in the starting profile before confirming migration. Once the PS5 profile is established, use the PS5 version for new purchases, jobs and character changes if that is where you want your long-term progression. Keep in mind that the PS4 copy is retained for access, but it is not a backup that automatically receives PS5 changes.

If two people share a console, check the Rockstar account each person uses before launching the game. A console user switch alone does not combine accounts or make a second profile eligible. The migration screen only works with the profile associated with the signed-in Rockstar identity.
GTA$ rules: earned versus purchased currency
Earned GTA$
GTA$ earned through gameplay transfers regardless of platform family, according to Rockstar’s platform-change guidance. For the PS4-to-PS5 move, those earned funds are part of the migrated profile.
Purchased GTA$
Purchased GTA$ follow a narrower rule: they transfer only within the same console family. PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 qualifies as a same-family move. The warning applies when a player attempts to move between different families; Rockstar says unspent purchased GTA$ are not eligible for that kind of transfer.
Do not interpret the same-family rule as permission to move a PlayStation profile to Xbox or PC. Platform eligibility and currency eligibility are separate questions, and the destination must first be a supported migration path.
Checking your balance
After the completion alert, check the profile on PS5 before spending money. Earned funds should be part of the migrated state, while purchased funds are governed by the same-family rule. If a balance does not look right, record the account, the two console generations and the exact on-screen result before contacting Rockstar Support; do not attempt a second migration with a different account.
Which platform moves are supported?
For this guide, the relevant supported destination is PS5 from PS4. Rockstar’s character-transfer guidance distinguishes that same-family generation move from unsupported family changes.

- Not supported: PlayStation to Xbox, Xbox to PlayStation, or a console-family move to PC.
If you are changing both console family and generation, the PS4-to-PS5 procedure cannot be used as a workaround. The migration prompt and the profile’s eligibility result determine what Rockstar will allow.
Cost and equipment considerations
Rockstar’s migration instructions do not list a migration fee, special cable, accessory, replacement part or separate transfer utility. You do need access to the PS5 edition of GTA Online. A PS5 copy of Grand Theft Auto V may be relevant if you do not already have destination-version access, but the support instructions do not say that a physical disc is mandatory. Check your existing digital entitlement or disc-based access before buying anything.
Buying a new copy does not repair an ineligible account, change the linked Rockstar identity or make an unsupported platform-family transfer possible. The purchase question and the account-migration question are separate.

Why the migration option may be unavailable
Rockstar’s save-migration error guidance lists several reasons a profile may be ineligible. The game’s result is account-specific, and Rockstar does not publish a numeric threshold for the phrase “insufficient progress.”

Profile banned or suspended
A banned or suspended profile may not be migrated. Resolve any account-enforcement issue through Rockstar’s support process; repeatedly reopening the migration menu does not remove a suspension.
Profile already migrated
Rockstar may reject a profile that has already completed migration. Check whether the PS5 account is already using the profile before attempting the process again.
Illegitimate progress
Profiles containing progress Rockstar identifies as illegitimate can be refused. The migration screen’s result is the authoritative indication for that account.
Insufficient progress
Rockstar names insufficient progress as another possible reason, but does not state a public numeric requirement. Do not rely on an invented level, rank, cash balance, or play-time cutoff. If the game reports this condition, follow the in-game result and contact Rockstar Support for account-specific clarification.

If the expected character is absent, verify the Rockstar Games account first. Migration is tied to the account associated with the PS4 profile, so changing the console user without changing the linked Rockstar identity may not reveal the profile you expect.
What to do when migration fails
- Read the exact message shown by GTA Online and note whether it identifies an already-migrated, banned or suspended, illegitimate, or insufficient-progress condition.
- Quit to the console menu, confirm that the PS5 is signed in to the correct Rockstar Games account, and relaunch GTA Online.
- If you only skipped the original offer, use Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile rather than waiting for the landing page to show it again.
- Do not create a replacement character or spend money expecting that to repair an eligibility decision; the documented reasons are evaluated against the existing profile.
- Contact Rockstar Support when the result is unclear or appears inconsistent with your account history. Include the exact message and the platform generations involved.
There is no published numeric test that lets players calculate eligibility in advance. The in-game migration result and Rockstar Support are therefore the reliable checks for an individual account.
Online migration is different from Story Mode save migration
Do not use the GTA Online profile procedure to move a Story Mode save. Rockstar documents Story Mode save migration separately. GTA Online uses the Online landing-page prompt or the Migrate Profile menu; Story Mode has its own save upload and download process.
If your goal is to continue a single-player campaign, identify the Story Mode save you want and follow Rockstar’s separate “Migrating your GTAV Story Mode Save Game from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S” instructions, last updated May 1, 2024. Starting an Online migration will not substitute for that save process.

Examples of how the rules affect real situations
You want to keep using both consoles
Complete the migration, then choose which generation is primary. The PS4 copy remains, but progress made afterward on either console will not synchronize. If you buy property on PS5 and later play PS4, do not expect that purchase to appear there.
You bought GTA$ on PS4 and are moving to PS5
Because both systems belong to the PlayStation family, purchased GTA$ are covered by the same-family rule. Earned GTA$ also transfer under Rockstar’s stated policy.
You are moving from PlayStation to Xbox
The PS4-to-PS5 instructions do not apply. Rockstar’s transfer guidance does not permit migration between PlayStation and Xbox families, and unspent purchased GTA$ are not eligible for a cross-family move.
You skipped the prompt and cannot find it
Enter GTA Online, open the Pause Menu, choose Online, then choose Migrate Profile. This is the documented later-entry path.
Your account has a Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack entitlement
On PS5, those benefits are available through a migrated character that had access to them on PS4. A newly created or unrelated character does not satisfy that condition.
You see no profile at all
First verify the Rockstar Games account and the PS5 edition you launched. A missing profile is not evidence that the PS4 save was erased; it can indicate that the console is using a different Rockstar identity or that the profile did not meet an eligibility condition. Use the exact message shown in the game when contacting support.

- Launching the wrong edition or signing in with a different Rockstar account, then assuming the PS4 character was deleted.
- Confirming a profile without checking its name or character details when more than one profile is associated with the account.
- Expecting later PS4 play to update the migrated PS5 state, or expecting PS5 purchases to appear on PS4.
- Confusing Online profile migration with Story Mode save upload and download.
- Assuming purchased GTA$ follow the same rule as earned GTA$ on every platform change.
- Inventing a rank or cash threshold for eligibility when Rockstar has published no numeric cutoff.
- Buying another copy of the game, creating a new character or repeatedly retrying when the account is banned, suspended or otherwise ineligible.
Post-migration checklist
- Confirm that the completion alert appeared.
- Check that the expected character and profile are displayed on PS5.
- Verify that your expected GTA$ balance and eligible benefits are present before making new purchases.
- Record that the PS4 profile remains separate and will not receive future PS5 changes.
- Use the PS5 profile as your primary state if you want all new progress to remain in the current-generation version.
- Keep the exact migration message if anything is missing; it gives Rockstar Support a starting point for account-specific help.

Do earned GTA$ transfer from PS4 to PS5?
