To transfer FLAC to a Sony Walkman, use a data-capable USB cable, select File Transfer when the player shows Use USB for, then use Music Center for PC on supported Windows models or the model-documented file-copy method. Some Walkman players accept Windows Explorer drag-and-drop into the Music folder; Mac users commonly need Sony’s Content Transfer utility or another method specified in the exact model’s Help Guide. Compatibility is model-specific, so confirm the player’s supported formats, storage locations and transfer software before copying a large library.

What you need before transferring music

Walkman instructions differ by generation and model. A current player with USB Type-C may expose a phone-like USB choice, while an older model may use a different connector, transfer mode or Sony utility. The same FLAC file can be accepted by Music Center for PC yet remain unplayable on a particular Walkman if that model’s firmware has narrower limits for codecs, sample rates, bit depth or file size.

  • The exact model number: Find it on the player, its packaging or its system-information screen, then open that model’s Sony Help Guide. Use the guide’s format and transfer tables as the final authority.
  • A data-capable cable: Use the supplied cable when possible. A charging-only cable, damaged cable or incompatible USB-C connection can power the player without creating a data connection.
  • A computer with enough free space: You need room for the source files and, if you use a managed library, any temporary conversion or indexing work.
  • Available Walkman storage: Check internal memory and, on models that support it, the inserted SD card. A transfer can fail or stop partway when the destination is full.
  • Supported audio formats: Sony’s Music Center for PC format list includes FLAC (.flac), WAV, DSD, ALAC, AIFF and APE, among others. Playback support on the player itself can be narrower.

Do not assume that a Walkman’s ability to appear as a USB drive proves that every audio format will play. Copy a small, representative album first, including the highest-resolution files in your collection, and verify playback before moving the rest.

Windows: transfer with Music Center for PC

Music Center for PC is Sony’s current Windows workflow for models that list it as compatible. Sony says support for the older Media Go software has ended, so installing Media Go is not a current solution. Music Center can organize a library and send selected tracks to the player, but the exact screens and available transfer options depend on the Walkman model.

1. Install or open the compatible Sony software

Check the Walkman’s Help Guide or Sony support page for the model-specific Music Center for PC requirement. Install the current version identified for that player, then open it before connecting the Walkman if the guide recommends that order. Let the application finish any first-run library scan; interrupting a scan while transferring can make it harder to tell whether a track is in the computer library or on the device.

2. Connect directly and choose the correct USB mode

  1. Unlock the Walkman.
  2. Connect it directly to a computer USB port with a known-good data cable. Bypass a USB hub while troubleshooting recognition or transfer errors.
  3. When the Walkman displays Use USB for, choose File Transfer. A charge-only or differently configured USB mode will not provide the file access Music Center needs.
  4. Wait for Windows and Music Center for PC to identify the player. Do not start copying until the Walkman is shown as the connected destination.

3. Select tracks and send them to the Walkman

In Music Center for PC, select the connected Walkman, choose the albums, artists, playlists or individual tracks to send, and start the transfer using the command shown for that device. Keep the cable attached until the application reports completion. Closing the program, putting the computer to sleep or unplugging the player during the operation can leave an incomplete file or an out-of-date music index.

If the player offers a destination choice, select internal memory or the supported SD card intentionally. A removable card may be the better destination for a large library, but only if the Walkman model supports music playback from that card and the card is correctly inserted and recognized.

4. Prevent an unintended AAC conversion

Sony documents an Auto assign transfer setting that can convert files to AAC. AAC is not the original FLAC stream, so do not use that setting when preserving the source lossless format is your goal. Choose a transfer mode that keeps the original format whenever Music Center and the model provide that choice. If the software offers no preservation option for a particular player, consult the model’s guide before transferring the rest of the library.

Windows: copy files with File Explorer

Some Walkman models expose their storage directly and document ordinary drag-and-drop. Sony’s Help Guide states: “You can transfer music content directly by dragging and dropping it from Windows Explorer.” This method is useful when you already maintain folders and do not need Music Center’s library or playlist management.

  1. Unlock the Walkman and connect it directly to Windows with a data-capable cable.
  2. Select File Transfer under Use USB for when that prompt appears.
  3. Open File Explorer, choose This PC, and open the device listed as WALKMAN (the displayed name can vary).
  4. Open the player’s Music folder. If the exact Help Guide specifies a different destination, follow that guide instead.
  5. Drag FLAC files or complete album folders from your computer into Music. Keeping artist and album folders intact makes later browsing easier, but the player’s indexing rules determine how they are displayed.
  6. Wait for all copy dialogs to finish, then use Windows’ safe-eject command before disconnecting.

Do not use Explorer drag-and-drop merely because another Walkman model supported it. Older players can require a Sony application, a particular transfer mode or a different folder structure. If the device appears in Windows but the Help Guide does not describe direct file access, use the documented software workflow instead.

Mac: follow the model-specific Sony method

Sony lists Content Transfer for Mac and notes that transfer methods vary by Walkman model. Some players document direct Finder copying, while legacy models may require another utility or transfer mode. There is no universal Mac procedure that is safe to apply to every generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact Walkman model and read its Mac transfer instructions in the Sony Help Guide.
  2. Install Content Transfer if that guide lists it, or use the other Sony-provided method named there.
  3. Connect the player directly with the appropriate data cable, avoiding hubs while diagnosing a connection problem.
  4. Unlock the Walkman and select File Transfer if the Use USB for menu is shown.
  5. In Content Transfer, select the FLAC or other lossless tracks and the destination specified for the player. If Finder copying is explicitly supported, open the Walkman volume and copy to the documented Music folder.
  6. Wait for the transfer to finish and eject the Walkman from macOS before unplugging it.

Do not infer Mac compatibility from a successful charge connection. A player can draw power while remaining unavailable for data, and a legacy model may not mount as a normal removable drive at all.

Which method should you use?

Method Operating system Best fit Preserves original lossless file? Library and playlist management Direct file access Destination
Music Center for PC Windows Models Sony lists as compatible Yes, when a preservation mode is selected; Auto assign transfer can convert to AAC Yes No; transfer is managed in the application Internal memory or supported SD card, if offered
Windows Explorer Windows Models whose Help Guide documents drag-and-drop Yes, because the source file is copied unchanged Folder-based organization; no required library database Yes Usually the documented Music folder on internal storage or a supported card
Content Transfer Mac Models Sony lists for the utility Follow the model’s transfer options; verify that no conversion is selected Utility-dependent Only where the model’s guide also documents it Model-specific internal or removable storage
Finder drag-and-drop Mac Only models whose Help Guide explicitly supports it Yes when copied as a file Folder-based Yes The folder named by the model guide, commonly Music

The “preserves” column describes the transfer operation, not guaranteed playback. A file can remain unchanged and still exceed the Walkman’s supported sample rate, bit depth, codec profile or size limit.

FLAC, WAV, DSD and other lossless formats

FLAC is a lossless, compressed format: decoding reproduces the original PCM audio data, while the compression reduces storage compared with an uncompressed WAV file. WAV, AIFF, ALAC, DSD and APE have different encoding and playback requirements. The practical question is not whether a format is called lossless; it is whether the exact Walkman firmware supports that format and the file’s technical parameters.

  • FLAC: Listed by Sony for Music Center for PC, but verify playback support for the exact player.
  • WAV and AIFF: Uncompressed or lightly structured files can consume substantially more storage; confirm the model’s limits before transferring a large collection.
  • ALAC: A lossless format whose support is model-dependent even when desktop software can catalog it.
  • DSD: Requires model-specific support and may have stricter sample-rate or file-handling rules.
  • APE and other formats: Music Center may list them, but the player’s Help Guide determines whether they play directly.

Keep the original files on the computer as a backup. If a transfer utility offers conversion, conversion to a lossy format such as AAC changes the stored audio and cannot be described as lossless. Select a no-conversion or original-format option when available, then test the resulting files on the Walkman.

Organize a library so the Walkman can find it

For direct copying, use clear folder names such as Artist/Album/Track.flac and keep each album’s files together. The Walkman may display metadata rather than folder names, so correct artist, album, title and track-number tags are important. Folder organization does not repair missing or inconsistent tags, and changing tags on the computer after copying may require another transfer before the player’s index reflects the change.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For Music Center, decide whether you want its managed library, playlists and device synchronization or simply a one-time copy. Managed transfers are convenient for regularly updated collections; Explorer or Finder copying gives you direct control over folders. Whichever approach you choose, avoid editing or deleting files on the Walkman while a transfer or indexing operation is still running.

Storage: internal memory versus a microSD card

Use internal memory when the model does not support removable storage or when you want the simplest single-device setup. Models with a supported microSD or microSDXC card can place a larger library on the card, but card playback, maximum capacity and supported file systems are model-specific. Check the Help Guide before buying or formatting a card.

After inserting a card, confirm that the Walkman recognizes it and that the transfer software offers it as a destination. If the card is absent from the destination list, do not assume the transfer failed; the model may not support music playback from that card, the card may need to be reseated, or the software may require a different transfer path.

Troubleshooting failed transfers and missing tracks

The Walkman charges but is not recognized

  • Unlock the player and select File Transfer in the USB prompt.
  • Replace the cable with the supplied cable or a known-good data cable; some USB-C cables carry power only.
  • Connect directly to the computer instead of through a hub.
  • Try another USB port, then reconnect after closing and reopening the transfer application.

Music Center sees the player but will not copy a track

  • Check free space on the selected internal or removable destination.
  • Confirm that the file’s format, sample rate, bit depth and size are within the exact model’s limits.
  • Review the transfer setting for automatic conversion. Disable Auto assign transfer when you need the original FLAC or other lossless file.
  • Copy one known-compatible track as a test before retrying a full album.

Explorer shows the device but there is no usable music folder

Direct file access may not be supported for that model, or the player may be in the wrong USB mode. Return to the model’s Help Guide and use Music Center, Content Transfer or the other documented method rather than creating arbitrary folders.

The files copied but do not appear in the music library

Allow the Walkman to finish scanning after the copy, then safely eject and reconnect if the model’s guide recommends a rescan. Check that the files are in the documented destination and that their tags and formats are supported. A successful copy operation only proves that bytes reached storage; it does not prove that the player can index or decode them.

Playback stops or skips

Compare the affected file’s codec, sample rate, bit depth and size with the limits in the model guide. Test a standard FLAC from the same album to separate a file-specific issue from a connection or storage problem. If only high-resolution files fail, the player’s playback specification—not the transfer method—may be the limiting factor.

The transfer was interrupted

Leave the Walkman connected until the application or operating system reports completion. If a cable was removed early, delete the incomplete copy from the destination, reconnect, and transfer it again. Keep the original source file untouched so you can retry without quality loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe, repeatable transfer routine

  1. Record the exact Walkman model and read its current Help Guide.
  2. Confirm supported formats and technical limits for the files you intend to copy.
  3. Choose Music Center for PC on a compatible Windows model, Content Transfer on a Mac model that lists it, or direct file copying only when the guide documents it.
  4. Connect directly with a data-capable cable and select File Transfer.
  5. Choose internal memory or the supported SD card, check free space, and disable any automatic lossy conversion.
  6. Transfer a small test album, wait for indexing, and play several tracks.
  7. Transfer the remaining library, keep the cable connected throughout, and safely eject the Walkman before disconnecting.
