There is no single “move my Mac to PC” button for everything. The dependable approach is to transfer files, photos, and passwords as three separate jobs using iCloud for Windows, then make independent local copies where you need offline access or a second backup.

On the Mac, enable the relevant iCloud services under your Apple Account. On a Windows 11 or later PC, install iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store, sign in to the same Apple Account, and enable iCloud Drive, Photos, or Passwords as needed. Files and photos may remain cloud-only until you download them; passwords require a temporary, readable CSV export that must be deleted after import.

What this method transfers—and what it does not

iCloud for Windows can expose supported iCloud Drive files, iCloud Photos, and iCloud Passwords on a Windows PC. It is a synchronization and download workflow, not a complete computer-to-computer migration utility. It does not copy macOS applications, macOS settings, system accounts, or every category of data stored on the Mac. Apple’s features and system requirements can vary by region and over time, so check the current iCloud for Windows requirements during installation.

The steps below intentionally keep the three data types separate. A file can be safely copied out of iCloud Drive, a photo library needs different download and fidelity checks, and a password export has security risks that do not apply to ordinary documents.

What you need

  • A Mac signed in to the Apple Account that owns the iCloud data.
  • A Windows 11 or later PC with internet access and enough local disk space for the copies you intend to keep.
  • iCloud for Windows installed from the Microsoft Store and signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • For passwords, access to the Mac’s Passwords app and a controlled temporary location for the CSV export.
  • Optional: a removable USB drive for carrying downloaded files or photos after they are present locally. A drive is transport storage only; it does not make a password CSV safe.

Prepare the Mac and Windows PC

  1. On the Mac, install pending operating-system updates if practical, connect to power, and confirm that the correct Apple Account is shown in System Settings.
  2. Check that iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos have finished syncing before you begin downloading on Windows. Items still uploading from the Mac will not be available as complete copies on the PC.
  3. On Windows, install iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store, sign in with the same Apple Account, and allow the app to complete its initial setup.
  4. Decide whether you want synchronized access, an independent local copy, or both. Synchronized folders continue to reflect changes on connected devices; a local copy outside iCloud needs its own backup.
  5. Check available storage. Apple provides 5 GB of free iCloud storage per account. When that storage is full, new photos and videos stop uploading and iCloud Drive and other iCloud apps do not remain current across devices.

Transfer files with iCloud Drive

Enable iCloud Drive on the Mac

  1. Open System Settings and select [your name].
  2. Choose iCloud, then Drive.
  3. Turn on Sync this Mac.
  4. Enable Desktop & Documents Folders only if you want those folders included in iCloud Drive. Enabling it can place a large amount of data into the cloud, so check available iCloud storage first.
  5. Leave the Mac connected to the internet until the files finish syncing. A file that has not uploaded cannot be downloaded by the PC.

Open and download the files on Windows

  1. Open iCloud for Windows and enable iCloud Drive.
  2. Open File Explorer and select iCloud Drive in the navigation pane.
  3. Browse to the files or folders you need. Cloud placeholders may appear before the content is stored locally.
  4. Download an item before opening it. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “You must download a file before you can open it.” Depending on the item and current app version, opening or selecting it may start the download.
  5. For data that must remain available offline, right-click the file or folder and choose Always keep on this device. Wait for the download to complete before disconnecting from the internet or shutting down the Mac.

Make an independent Windows copy

A synchronized iCloud Drive folder is not the same as a separate archive. To create an independent copy, first make sure the content is downloaded, then copy it to a folder outside iCloud Drive, such as a folder under C:Users<your-user-name>Documents or an external drive. Include that destination in your normal Windows backup.

Do not drag an item out of iCloud Drive when you still want it on the Mac or on other connected devices. Apple says moving an item out removes it from iCloud Drive and from those connected devices. Use Copy first, verify the destination, and only then decide whether the cloud version should be removed.

File-transfer checks

  • Open several representative documents, images, and folders from the Windows destination, not only from the iCloud Drive view.
  • Compare folder names and approximate item counts with the Mac.
  • Confirm that large files completed downloading rather than remaining placeholders.
  • Check applications and formats separately. A file may transfer correctly even when Windows does not have a program that can open the Mac-created format.

Transfer photos and videos

Confirm the Mac’s photo library is synced

  1. On the Mac, open System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and confirm that iCloud Photos is enabled.
  2. Open the Photos app and wait for pending uploads to finish. Keep the Mac online and powered during a large upload.
  3. Remember that an iCloud storage limit can stop new photos and videos from uploading. If recent items are missing on Windows, check the Mac’s sync status and available iCloud storage before repeating the download.

Download through iCloud for Windows

  1. In iCloud for Windows, turn on Photos and apply the change.
  2. Open the iCloud Photos folder in File Explorer.
  3. Select the photos or videos to download. Allow the download to finish before copying them elsewhere.
  4. For an archive, select Always keep on this device for the required files or folders, then copy the downloaded items to a separate local folder that is included in your Windows backup.

Download through iCloud.com

If you need only a selection, sign in to iCloud.com/photos in a browser, select the desired photos or videos, and download them. This can be more practical than synchronizing the entire library when the PC has limited disk space. After downloading, move or copy the files into an ordinary local folder and back that folder up.

Understand Shared Albums’ limitations

Do not use Shared Albums as a full-fidelity archive. Apple states that photos and videos copied from Shared Albums are not full resolution and do not include comments or likes. Use the originals available through iCloud Photos when preserving quality and associated library information matters.

Photo-transfer checks

  • Open a sample of downloaded images and videos from the independent Windows folder.
  • Check both older and recently captured items, because an upload that was still pending on the Mac will not appear as a complete download.
  • Verify that the file dates and extensions meet your intended editing or backup workflow.
  • Keep a second backup of irreplaceable images; iCloud synchronization is not a substitute for an independently stored copy.

Transfer saved passwords

Password migration is different from file and photo synchronization. The Mac exports eligible saved passwords to a CSV file, and the CSV is readable by anyone who obtains it. Plan the export and import so the file exists for the shortest practical time.

Export from Passwords on the Mac

  1. Open the Mac’s Passwords app.
  2. Choose File > Export All Passwords to File. If you need only some entries, select those entries and use the option to export the selected passwords instead.
  3. Save the CSV to a controlled location that is not shared with other users or automatically synchronized to an unwanted service.
  4. Do not email the CSV, upload it to a public or shared folder, or leave it on removable media after the transfer.

Apple’s warning is unambiguous: “Passwords you export are not encrypted and are visible to anyone who has access to the file.”

Import into iCloud Passwords on Windows

  1. Open iCloud for Windows and sign in to the same Apple Account.
  2. Enable Passwords and open iCloud Passwords as provided by the installed app.
  3. Choose Add Password > Import Passwords.
  4. Select the CSV exported from the Mac and let the import finish.
  5. Review the app’s report or list of entries it could not import. Correct malformed or unsupported rows individually rather than assuming every line succeeded.
  6. Open several imported entries and test the intended sign-in workflow before deleting the Mac copy.
  7. Delete the CSV using the Windows recycle-bin controls, then empty the recycle bin if the computer is shared or managed. Also remove any duplicate CSV left on the Mac, a USB drive, or a cloud-synchronized folder.

Know what the CSV does not contain

The Mac export cannot include Wi-Fi passwords, passwords shared with a group unless you created that group, or access to accounts that use Sign in with Apple. The Windows import also does not replace existing iCloud Passwords entries; it adds eligible imported records alongside what is already present. These limits can leave gaps even when the import reports success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Password-transfer security checks

  • Use a private, access-controlled account on both computers during export and import.
  • Keep the CSV only on local storage you control while it exists.
  • Do not treat a successful import as proof that excluded categories migrated; document Wi-Fi credentials and shared-group passwords separately using an approved secure process.
  • After deletion, check recent files and the recycle bin on every device that temporarily held the CSV.

Choose between cloud sync and a local copy

Choice What it gives you Trade-off Best use
iCloud sync Supported files, photos, and passwords remain available through the same Apple Account on connected devices. Items can be cloud-only, depend on account access and internet connectivity, and consume iCloud storage. Keeping a Mac and Windows PC working with the same current data.
Downloaded local copy A separate Windows folder that can be opened offline and backed up independently. Uses PC or external-drive space and will not automatically reflect later iCloud changes. Archives, offline work, and protection against accidental synchronized deletion.
Selective download Only chosen files or photos occupy local disk space. You must identify what to download and may overlook items that remain placeholders. Small projects or PCs with limited storage.
Full local availability Pinning or copying an entire required set makes it available without an internet connection. Requires enough disk space and time for every item to download. Travel, offline editing, or a complete local photo/file working set.
Shared Album download A convenient way to obtain copies of items shared in an album. Copies are not full resolution and omit comments and likes. Reference copies where original fidelity and album metadata are not required.

Use a removable drive safely

A USB flash drive or external disk can carry downloaded files and photos between computers or provide a second local copy. Download the items to Windows first, safely eject the drive, and verify the destination before deleting anything from iCloud. Apple’s documented workflow does not specify a particular drive capacity or model, so choose one based on the size of the downloaded data and your backup plan.

Do not use an ordinary removable drive as the only place for a password CSV. The CSV remains readable if the drive is lost or inspected. If a removable drive temporarily holds the export, keep it under your control and delete the file as soon as the import and verification are complete.

Troubleshoot common failures

A file appears in File Explorer but will not open

It is probably a cloud placeholder. Download it first, then use Always keep on this device when it must remain offline. Confirm that the download icon or status has changed before opening it.

Recent files or photos are missing

Check the Mac’s iCloud Drive or Photos sync status, internet connection, and available iCloud storage. A full 5 GB account prevents new photos and videos from uploading and stops iCloud data from staying current. Wait for the Mac upload to finish, then refresh iCloud for Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moving a file removed it from the Mac

That behavior is expected when an item is moved out of the iCloud Drive folder: the move removes it from iCloud Drive and connected devices. Restore the item to iCloud Drive if needed, then use a copy operation to create a Windows-only version.

The password import has missing entries

Review the import list for rows that could not be imported, then check whether the missing credentials belong to an excluded category: Wi-Fi passwords, group-shared passwords you did not create, or Sign in with Apple access. Existing iCloud Passwords entries are not replaced by the import, so search for duplicates before creating a manual correction.

Windows has no room for a full download

Download only the files and photos needed immediately, pin critical items, and store a complete archive on an adequately sized external disk. Keep the synchronized iCloud view for items that do not need offline access, while ensuring that irreplaceable local copies are included in a separate backup.

Final verification checklist

  • Files open from a folder outside iCloud Drive.
  • Photos and videos open from the independent Windows copy, including recent and older samples.
  • Required files are pinned or copied for offline use.
  • The password import list has been reviewed and excluded categories have been identified.
  • The unencrypted CSV has been deleted from the Mac, Windows PC, removable media, and recycle bins.
  • Independent local folders are included in a Windows backup.
  • The Mac’s originals remain available when you intended to keep synchronized copies.
