Quick Share is the simplest wireless route for moving photos, videos, and documents between a nearby Android phone or tablet and a Windows PC. Install the correct Windows app, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (or Ethernet), make both devices discoverable, then choose the other device from Quick Share. Google says shared files are encrypted. Google’s Android Help instructions cover the current setup and transfer process.
This guide explains compatibility, installation, privacy settings, both transfer directions, file locations, and the fixes for devices that do not appear or transfers that stall.
What Quick Share can do
Quick Share transfers supported content—including images, videos, and documents—between nearby Android devices and Windows computers. You select the receiving device rather than creating a cloud link or sending an email attachment. The recipient normally accepts an on-screen request before the transfer starts.
Quick Share is a local, proximity-based transfer method. Google specifies that the devices should be on the same network and within 5 metres of one another. Bluetooth helps the devices discover each other, while Wi-Fi or Ethernet provides the network connection used by the apps. It is not necessary to buy a special adapter when your existing PC already meets these requirements.

For privacy, configure visibility before you send. A device set to No one or an equivalent restricted state will not appear to other people, even when Bluetooth is enabled. When the transfer succeeds on Windows, the received item is placed in the Downloads/Quick Share folder.
Google Android Help states: “When you share files, they’re encrypted.” That statement describes Quick Share’s file-sharing protection; it does not remove the need to check who can discover your device.
Check compatibility before installing
Use this checklist against the computer and Android device you intend to pair. These are compatibility requirements, not speed or performance guarantees.
| Component | Requirement or limitation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows edition | 64-bit Windows 10 or later | Open Windows Settings and check the system type and version. ARM-based Windows computers require Windows 11 or later. |
| Android device | Android 6.0 or later | Check the Android version in the phone or tablet’s About section. |
| Wireless and network services | Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Turn Bluetooth on for both devices. Connect both devices to the same network when possible. |
| Distance | Within 5 metres | Keep the phone and PC close together during discovery and transfer. |
| Windows app | Google’s Quick Share app on most PCs | Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app from Microsoft Store instead. |
| Regional availability | Available in the United States and most countries; Google’s documentation excludes Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria | Availability can change. If you are in a restricted or uncertain region, verify the current guidance before troubleshooting the installation. |
There is one less-obvious discovery limitation: Google notes that a Windows computer without Bluetooth Low Energy extended advertising support may not be findable by other people on certain networks. This affects discovery in particular network and hardware combinations; it is not evidence that every PC needs a particular Bluetooth dongle.

Google does not publish a transfer-speed figure or a universal file-size ceiling in the cited help pages. Expect the result to depend on the devices, their network, distance, and the files being sent rather than on a promised benchmark.
Install and prepare Quick Share on Windows
Install Google’s Windows app
- Download Google’s Quick Share app from the official Android Help page and run the installer.
- Open Quick Share after installation. Use a standard, guest, or child Windows account. Do not launch the app as administrator; elevated mode can interfere with drag-and-drop and normal sharing behavior.
- Sign in with a Google Account if you want all available options. Google’s setup also asks you to choose a name for the PC and decide who can share with it.
- Turn on Bluetooth and connect the PC to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. For the most reliable discovery, connect the PC and Android device to the same network and place them within 5 metres.
- Leave Quick Share open while you test the first transfer. If Windows asks for notification permission, allow it so incoming requests are visible.
Use the Samsung app on a Samsung PC
Samsung PCs are the exception to the general Windows installation path. Install Samsung’s Quick Share app from Microsoft Store rather than Google’s Windows package, then open it and configure its device name and visibility. The Android-side steps remain the same: choose Quick Share from the Share menu and select the PC.
Set visibility and privacy deliberately
Visibility determines whether another device can find you. On Windows, open Quick Share and choose the visibility setting in its sharing preferences. The available Windows choices are:
Recommended Free Tools
| Windows setting | Who can discover the PC | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone | Nearby people using Quick Share | Useful for a one-off exchange in a trusted place, but more open than necessary for routine use. |
| Contacts | People represented in your configured contacts | A narrower option for regular sharing with known people; signing in exposes the full set of options. |
| Your devices | Your signed-in devices | The most convenient restricted choice when you own both endpoints. |
| No one | No other device | Use when you want Quick Share installed but temporarily unavailable for incoming discovery. |
On Android, Quick Share visibility includes Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone for 10 minutes. The 10-minute Everyone option automatically returns to the previous setting afterward. Android’s receiving screen can be visible to nearby people while the phone is in Receive mode, so leave that mode when you finish. When receiving from someone else, keep the Android receiving screen unlocked so the request can be accepted.

For the Android menus and current naming, see Google’s Quick Share help. Labels can vary slightly by Android version and manufacturer, but the visibility controls serve the same purpose.
Send files from Android to Windows
This direction is usually fastest when the file is already open in a phone or tablet app.
- On Android, open the photo, video, document, or other supported item you want to send.
- Tap Share (or the app’s share icon), then choose Quick Share. If Quick Share is not listed, scroll the share sheet or use its search option.
- Wait for nearby devices to appear. Tap the Windows computer’s name.
- Watch the PC. Accept the incoming request in Quick Share if Windows prompts you.
- Keep both devices nearby until the progress indicator finishes. Do not switch off Bluetooth or disconnect the PC from its network during the transfer.
Windows saves the received file under Downloads/Quick Share. Open File Explorer, select Downloads, and then open the Quick Share folder. If you send several files with the same name, Windows may add a number to prevent overwriting an existing file.

Send files from Windows to Android
Use the Quick Share window
- Open Quick Share on Windows.
- Select Choose files, or drag the files into the Quick Share window.
- When nearby devices appear, select the Android phone or tablet.
- Select Share.
- On Android, accept the request when it appears. Keep the receiving screen unlocked while accepting.
You can select more than one item in the file picker. The app’s progress state is the useful indication that the transfer is still active; do not close Quick Share until it completes.
If drag-and-drop does nothing
Drag-and-drop can fail when Quick Share was opened with administrator privileges. Close it, reopen it normally under a standard, guest, or child account, and try again. If the problem remains, right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Send with Quick Share, then select the Android device. This context-menu route avoids the drag-and-drop handoff while using the same receiving process.

Work through these checks in order. They address discovery rather than file corruption.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Confirm both sides are ready. Quick Share must be installed and enabled on Windows and available in Android’s Share menu. Open the Windows app rather than assuming it is running in the background.
- Check the receiver’s visibility. Temporarily choose a setting that permits the other device—such as Everyone or Everyone for 10 minutes—then return to a more private setting after the transfer.
- Turn on Bluetooth. Enable it on both devices. Discovery can fail even when Wi-Fi is working if Bluetooth is off.
- Check the network. Enable Wi-Fi or Ethernet and connect both devices to the same network. A phone’s mobile-data connection alone does not satisfy that local-network check.
- Reduce the distance. Move the devices within 5 metres and remove unnecessary obstacles or intermediate rooms while testing.
- Rule out a busy receiver. Finish or cancel another Quick Share transfer. A receiver already handling a transfer may not accept a new request.
- Reopen the app. Close Quick Share on Windows and open it again; on Android, close and reopen the sharing app. If discovery still fails, restart both devices.
Office, school, and guest networks
Some managed networks block device-to-device traffic even though they provide internet access. Google suggests creating a temporary hotspot from the phone and connecting the Windows PC to that hotspot, then retrying Quick Share. This changes the local network path; it does not require the hotspot to provide a separate internet subscription.

Bluetooth Low Energy discovery limitation
If the PC works for your own devices but other people cannot find it on a particular network, the computer may lack Bluetooth Low Energy extended advertising support. Google documents this as a possible limitation for discovery by other people. Check the PC’s Bluetooth hardware and network behavior before replacing equipment; the help page does not prescribe a universal adapter.
When a request never arrives or a transfer stalls
Windows shows no notification
Open Windows notification settings and make sure notifications for Quick Share are enabled. Also turn off Focus Assist or Do not disturb temporarily; either can suppress the incoming approval prompt. Return those modes to your preferred setting after testing.
The progress indicator stops
- Keep both devices within 5 metres and confirm Bluetooth and the shared network are still active.
- Check that the receiving device has not changed visibility or locked itself before accepting.
- Cancel the stalled transfer, close and reopen Quick Share, and retry with one small file. A single-file test separates a discovery problem from a file or network problem.
- If the app remains unresponsive, restart the Android device and Windows PC, then repeat the setup checks.
There is no published universal speed or file-size limit to use as a diagnosis. A long transfer is not automatically an error, particularly on a congested or weak local network; judge it by whether progress continues and whether the request was accepted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuick Share versus a USB cable
Wireless sharing is convenient when the devices are nearby and you do not want to find a cable. USB is the dependable fallback when a managed network blocks local discovery, Bluetooth is unavailable, or you need a direct wired connection.
| Consideration | Quick Share | USB file transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi or Ethernet; devices should share a network and stay within 5 metres | Physical cable between the Android device and computer |
| Best use | Wireless exchange of photos, videos, and documents between nearby devices | Fallback when wireless discovery or a managed network is the obstacle |
| Approval | Receiver normally accepts an on-screen request | Android normally requires selecting a USB file-transfer mode after connection |
| Hardware caveat | Requires compatible Bluetooth and network services | Not every USB cable carries data; connector compatibility and data support must both be checked |
For the wired method, connect the Android device with a USB data cable, unlock it, select the USB notification, and choose the file-transfer option when Android offers one. Google’s Android/computer transfer guide explicitly warns that some USB cables charge only and cannot transfer files. If the phone is not detected, try a known data-capable cable and a compatible port before changing software settings.
A practical first-transfer checklist
- Windows is 64-bit Windows 10 or later, or Windows 11 or later on ARM; Android is version 6.0 or later.
- The correct app is installed: Google’s app on most PCs, Samsung’s Microsoft Store app on Samsung PCs.
- Quick Share is not running as administrator.
- Bluetooth is on, Wi-Fi or Ethernet is available, and both devices use the same network.
- The devices are within 5 metres.
- The receiving device’s visibility allows the sender to find it.
- Windows notifications are enabled and Focus Assist or Do not disturb is not hiding the request.
- The Android receiving screen is unlocked when accepting.
- You know where Windows will save the result:
Downloads/Quick Share.
Choosing the right method
Use Quick Share when both devices meet the compatibility requirements, are close together, and you want a cable-free exchange with an explicit approval step. Use USB when the local network is controlled or unreliable, discovery remains blocked after the checks above, or you already have a verified data cable. In either case, start with one small file, confirm it arrives in the expected location, and then send the rest.
