For most Android phones and Windows PCs, Google Quick Share is the simplest wireless method: it sends files in either direction over a nearby connection, without a cable. Install the correct Windows app, enable Bluetooth and the required network connection, make both devices visible, then approve the transfer on the receiving device.

Phone Link with Link to Windows is a useful alternative if your Android phone is eligible and you already use Microsoft’s connected-phone features. It requires newer Android and app versions, pairing with the same Microsoft account, and the devices on the same Wi-Fi network. The steps below explain the prerequisites, both transfer directions, privacy controls, file limitations, and fixes for discovery problems.

Choose the right wireless method

There are two supported approaches for this Android-to-Windows task. Quick Share is the general-purpose nearby transfer tool and works from Android to Windows or Windows to Android. Phone Link is better suited to people who already have an eligible Android phone paired with Windows and want file sharing alongside Phone Link features.

Method Best fit Important requirements and limits
Google Quick Share Nearby transfers in either direction Android 6.0 or later; a compatible 64-bit Windows PC; Bluetooth on both devices; Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the PC; visibility settings must allow discovery. Samsung PCs use Samsung’s Quick Share app.
Phone Link + Link to Windows People who already pair an eligible Android phone with Windows Android 10 or later, supported device eligibility, specified minimum app versions, the same Microsoft account, and the same Wi-Fi network. File sharing is intended for locally saved files.
Windows Nearby sharing Sharing between nearby Windows PCs Microsoft documents this as a Windows-to-Windows feature; it does not by itself provide Android-to-Windows transfer.

Official documentation does not provide a comparable transfer-speed figure for these methods. Actual performance depends on the files, radios, distance, interference, and both devices, so do not choose between them based on an assumed speed rating.

Use Quick Share for most Android-to-Windows transfers

Check compatibility before installing

Google’s current Android help page says Quick Share on Android works with Android 6.0 or later. On Windows, the general requirement is 64-bit Windows 10 or later. Google’s product page specifies Windows 11 or later for ARM-based PCs, so an ARM computer should be treated separately from the general Windows requirement. See Google’s Quick Share requirements and instructions and the Quick Share Windows product page for the current supported combinations.

Use Google’s Quick Share for Windows on a non-Samsung PC. If the Windows computer itself is a Samsung PC, Google directs owners to Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store instead. This distinction applies to the computer, not merely to the brand of the Android phone.

Install the Windows app and prepare the radios

  1. Install the appropriate Quick Share app for the PC type described above.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on both the Android device and the Windows PC.
  3. On the Windows PC, turn on Wi-Fi or connect through Ethernet. The PC needs one of these network connections even though the transfer is discovered through nearby-device features.
  4. Place the devices close together. Google’s product page gives a working-distance guideline of within 16 feet (5 meters).

Google warns that, on some networks, a Windows PC without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) extended advertising support may not be found by other devices. This is a discovery limitation, not a file-format problem; keep it in mind if the apps are installed and the radios appear enabled but the computer never appears.

Set visibility and receiving permissions

On both devices, open Quick Share’s visibility or receiving controls and review who can find the device. Google’s choices include Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one. A setting of No one prevents normal discovery, while a restricted setting can hide a device from an account or contact that is not allowed.

For routine personal transfers, Google recommends signing in and selecting Contacts or Your devices for a more private setup. If a computer is not appearing, temporarily check whether its visibility mode allows the phone to see it; restore the narrower setting afterward.

Send a file from Android to Windows

Once Quick Share is installed and both devices are discoverable, the Android-to-PC flow is short:

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
  1. On the Android phone or tablet, select the file you want to send in the relevant file manager, gallery, or app.
  2. Tap Share, then choose Quick Share from the share options.
  3. Wait for the nearby-device list and select the visible Windows PC.
  4. Look at the Windows computer and accept the incoming request. The receiving screen may need to be unlocked before the request appears or can be accepted.
  5. Leave both devices nearby until the transfer finishes.

The recipient must approve the request; a visible device is not silently given every file. Google’s product page says Quick Share transfers are protected by end-to-end encryption. The recipient confirmation and the visibility mode are therefore important parts of both the workflow and the privacy model.

Send files from Windows to Android

Quick Share also works in the opposite direction:

  1. Open the Quick Share app on Windows.
  2. Choose the files or folders to send, or drag them into the app window.
  3. Select the visible Android phone or tablet from the nearby-device list.
  4. Accept the request on the Android device.
  5. Keep the devices within the nearby range until the Windows app reports completion.

If the phone is not listed, check its Quick Share receiving mode and visibility setting, make sure its screen is unlocked, and confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices. A phone configured as hidden or as No one will not be offered as a normal recipient.

Why Quick Share cannot find the other device

Use this order rather than changing several settings at once:

  1. Confirm the prerequisites. Bluetooth must be on for both devices. The Windows PC must also have Wi-Fi or Ethernet enabled, and it must meet the supported Windows architecture and version requirements.
  2. Check visibility on both sides. Review the Quick Share audience and receiving mode. A restrictive option can be correct for privacy but will prevent discovery by an unapproved device.
  3. Unlock and accept the receiver. The receiving screen may need to be unlocked, and the transfer does not begin until the recipient approves it.
  4. Reduce distance and interference. Bring the devices within 16 feet (5 meters), as Google’s product page recommends, and retry.
  5. Consider the Windows BLE caveat. Google notes that PCs lacking BLE extended advertising support may not be found on some networks. This can explain a discovery failure even when the app and basic radio settings look correct.

A USB Bluetooth adapter may help a desktop that has no Bluetooth meet the basic radio prerequisite. However, the official guidance does not verify any particular adapter or promise that an adapter supplies BLE extended advertising or fixes every discovery problem. Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the PC is still required.

Use Phone Link when its requirements fit

Understand the two sets of requirements

Phone Link sharing is a feature-specific alternative, not a replacement for Quick Share’s requirements. Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup page lists Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, plus Android 10 or later and a supported selection of Android devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s separate file-transfer guide gives the minimums for the file-sharing feature itself: Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows version 1.24032.518.0 or later, and Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or later. Because the file-sharing page and the general setup page describe different feature baselines, use the newer or more specific requirement that applies to the feature you are trying to use, and update both apps if a transfer option is missing.

Pair the phone and PC

  1. Install or open Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on the Android device.
  2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account on both devices.
  3. Complete the pairing flow for the eligible Android phone.
  4. Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. Microsoft lists this same-network condition for setup and connected operation.

Phone Link’s device support is selective rather than universal across every Android model. If your phone is not eligible, Quick Share is the more broadly applicable route when its Android and Windows requirements are met.

Transfer with Phone Link in either direction

Windows to Android

  1. In Windows, select a locally saved file.
  2. Use the file’s Share command and choose Phone Link.
  3. Select the connected Android device if prompted and approve the request on the phone.
  4. Look for the received file on Android under Downloads > Sent from your PC.

Microsoft says cloud-stored files are shared as links rather than transferred as file data. If you need the actual file copied to the phone, first make sure a local copy is available on the Windows PC.

Android to Windows

  1. On Android, select the locally stored file.
  2. Open the Android share drawer and choose Link to Windows – Send to PC.
  3. Choose the connected Windows PC and approve the request if prompted.
  4. Wait for Phone Link to complete the transfer before closing the sharing flow.

Phone Link drag-and-drop limitations

Microsoft documents restrictions in its drag-and-drop flow. Folders and selecting 100 files are listed among unsupported cases, so use individual locally stored files or a supported selection instead. Also, minimizing Phone Link while a drag-and-drop transfer is in progress cancels that transfer; keep the app visible until it finishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse Windows Nearby sharing with Android transfer

Windows has a separate Nearby sharing feature for sharing between nearby Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It is useful for PC-to-PC sharing, but enabling it does not make an Android phone appear in the Windows sharing list. For Android-to-Windows transfers, use Quick Share or, when the phone and software qualify, Phone Link.

Preparation checklist before a large transfer

Before sending a group of photos, videos, or documents, verify the basics in one pass. Confirm the Android version, Windows edition and architecture, the correct Quick Share app for the PC brand, and Bluetooth status on both devices. On Windows, verify that Wi-Fi is connected or Ethernet is plugged in; an idle Wi-Fi adapter that is not connected does not satisfy the same practical condition as an active network connection. Put the devices on a desk within the 16-foot (5-meter) guideline and keep the receiving screen unlocked while you initiate the request.

For Phone Link, check the Android 10 minimum, Windows update baseline, supported-device eligibility, both app versions, the same Microsoft account, and the same Wi-Fi network. These checks prevent a common mistake: applying Quick Share’s Android 6.0 requirement to Phone Link, or assuming that a phone paired for notifications automatically qualifies for file sharing.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The PC is missing from Android’s Quick Share list

First check that the Windows app is running and that the PC’s visibility is not set to No one. Unlock the Windows screen, confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and bring the devices closer. If those checks pass, the BLE extended-advertising limitation may apply on that network. Changing visibility can establish whether discovery is the issue, but it cannot guarantee a fix for unsupported BLE behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone appears, but the request never completes

Make sure the phone is unlocked and that someone accepts the incoming prompt. A listed device is only a potential recipient; Quick Share waits for explicit approval. Keep both screens available until completion rather than switching the receiving device into a locked or hidden state.

Phone Link has no sharing option

Check the file-sharing minimums separately from the general Phone Link setup requirements. Update Phone Link to at least 1.24032.156.0 and Link to Windows to at least 1.24032.518.0, use Android 10 or later, and confirm that the phone is among Microsoft’s supported devices. A cloud-only item will offer a link, not a file copy, and an unsupported drag-and-drop selection may hide or reject the action.

Privacy and practical-use checklist

  • Use Contacts or Your devices in Quick Share when you want a narrower audience than Everyone.
  • Switch visibility away from No one only long enough to make an intentional transfer, then restore the preferred setting.
  • Check the recipient’s screen is unlocked and that the incoming request is accepted.
  • Keep both devices close; Google gives 16 feet (5 meters) as the Quick Share distance guideline.
  • For Phone Link, verify the Android version, Windows update level, app versions, same-account sign-in, same-Wi-Fi connection, and device eligibility.
  • Use locally saved files with Phone Link when you need the file itself rather than a cloud link.
  • Do not expect Windows Nearby sharing alone to connect Android to Windows.
  • Remember that Quick Share requests require recipient confirmation, and Google states that transfers use end-to-end encryption.

Which option should you use?

Choose Quick Share first when you need a straightforward nearby transfer and your phone runs Android 6.0 or later. It handles Android-to-Windows and Windows-to-Android transfers, gives you explicit visibility controls, and asks the receiver to approve each transfer. Choose Phone Link when your Android phone is among the supported devices, the required app versions are installed, and you already want Microsoft’s paired-phone workflow on the same Wi-Fi network. Neither method has an official speed comparison in the cited documentation, so reliability, eligibility, privacy settings, and the direction of the transfer are more useful decision criteria than a claimed throughput number.

Quick decision guide

  • You need the broadest Android compatibility: start with Quick Share, which supports Android 6.0 and later when the Windows requirements are met.
  • You own a Samsung Windows PC: install Samsung’s Quick Share app rather than Google’s Windows package.
  • You already use Phone Link: try its sharing flow if the Android 10, app-version, supported-device, account, and same-Wi-Fi conditions all match.
  • You are sharing between two Windows computers: Windows Nearby sharing is the relevant Microsoft feature, not the Android workflow in this guide.
  • You need a cloud file copied locally: download it to the sending device first when using Phone Link; otherwise Microsoft shares a link.

Why can’t my PC find my phone?

Check Bluetooth on both devices, Wi-Fi or Ethernet on Windows, Quick Share visibility, the phone’s receiving mode, and whether the phone screen is unlocked. Move within 16 feet (5 meters). Google also warns that a Windows PC without BLE extended advertising support may not be discoverable on some networks.

Does Quick Share work on every Windows computer?

The general Windows requirement is 64-bit Windows 10 or later. ARM-based PCs have a separate Windows 11-or-later requirement. Non-Samsung PCs use Google’s Quick Share app; Samsung PCs use Samsung’s Quick Share app.

Can I use Phone Link instead of Quick Share?

Yes, if the phone is among Microsoft’s supported Android devices and meets the feature requirements. File sharing requires Android 10 or later, the stated minimum Phone Link and Link to Windows versions, a compatible Windows installation, the same Microsoft account, and the same Wi-Fi network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Phone Link copy a file stored only in the cloud?

No. Microsoft says cloud-stored items are shared as links. Download the item to the Windows PC first if you need the file data copied to Android.

Can I transfer folders with Phone Link drag and drop?

Microsoft lists folders and a selection of 100 files among unsupported drag-and-drop cases. Use individual locally saved files or a supported selection, and do not minimize Phone Link during the transfer because minimizing cancels it.

Is Windows Nearby sharing the same as Quick Share?

No. Microsoft’s Windows Nearby sharing documentation covers sharing between nearby Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. It does not by itself provide Android-to-Windows transfer; use Quick Share or eligible Phone Link instead.

The Bottom Line

For most people, install the correct Quick Share app, enable Bluetooth and Windows Wi-Fi or Ethernet, set a deliberate visibility audience, and approve the request on the receiving device. Use Phone Link when its Android, Windows, app-version, account, device-support, and same-Wi-Fi requirements fit your setup. Keep devices within 16 feet (5 meters), and treat visibility and receiver approval as essential parts of both discovery and privacy.
