The correct transfer method depends on what you call a “draft.” A document you wrote on a computer can be sent to a Kindle with Amazon’s Send to Kindle service or copied with a USB cable. A handwritten draft in a Kindle Scribe notebook must be exported from the Scribe through its Share menu, usually by email or, on supported models, through a connected Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive account. These are different workflows: sending a file to a Kindle does not export a Scribe notebook back to your computer.

Choose the transfer route before you start

Use the table below to match the item, direction and destination you actually need. Choosing the wrong route is the most common reason a transfer appears to “fail”—for example, a Scribe notebook is not exposed as an ordinary editable file in the same way as a document copied to Kindle storage.

What you have Direction Best route What you receive
PDF, Word file, text file or another supported document on a computer Computer to Kindle Send to Kindle A copy in the Kindle library, delivered wirelessly
Any file you want to place directly in Kindle storage Computer to Kindle USB connection A local file on the reader; steps depend on Windows, macOS and Kindle generation
Handwritten notes in a Kindle Scribe notebook Kindle to computer Scribe Share by email An exported copy downloaded from a link
Scribe documents or notebooks and a supported cloud account Either direction Connected Google Drive or OneDrive A manually imported or exported copy; not automatic synchronization

Before transferring, identify three things: the Kindle model and release generation, your computer’s operating system, and whether the draft is a conventional document or handwritten Scribe content. Also decide whether you need a library copy, a file stored locally on the reader, or an exported PDF/text copy on the computer.

Send a computer document to Kindle wirelessly

For a draft that already exists on your computer, Send to Kindle is normally the simplest option because it avoids cables and places the document in your Kindle library. Amazon’s transfer help lists these supported file types: PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM or HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG or JPEG, BMP and EPUB. The stated limit is 200 MB per file.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

Step-by-step

  1. Save the latest version of the draft on your computer in one of the supported formats. If the file is larger than 200 MB, reduce its size or divide the material into smaller files before sending.
  2. Open Amazon’s Send to Kindle service while signed in to the Amazon account used by the Kindle.
  3. Select the document, or drag it into the upload area, and choose the Kindle devices or apps that should receive it.
  4. Submit the transfer and leave the Kindle connected to Wi-Fi. The document should appear in the selected Kindle library after delivery.
  5. Open the document on the Kindle and check page breaks, images, fonts and any notes before treating it as the authoritative draft.

This route is appropriate when the goal is reading, annotating or continuing to work with a personal document in the Kindle environment. It is not an export of a Scribe notebook: a document sent from the computer remains a document sent to the device.

Format and feature considerations

  • PDF preserves the source page layout most closely, but it may be less flexible for changing font size or reflowing text.
  • DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML and EPUB are more document-oriented formats, but their appearance can change when rendered for a Kindle screen.
  • Amazon’s personal-document guidance associates some Scribe writing features with documents imported through Send to Kindle. A PDF loaded directly by USB does not support the same set of Scribe features.
  • The 200 MB figure is a per-file product limit, not a promise about upload speed or delivery time.

Copy files with USB on Windows

A USB transfer is useful when you need a local copy in the Kindle’s storage, when wireless delivery is unavailable, or when you are moving several files under your own folder structure. Use a USB cable that supports data, not only charging.

Step-by-step in File Explorer

  1. Unlock the Kindle and connect it to the Windows computer with a data-capable USB cable.
  2. Open File Explorer and look under This PC. Amazon’s Windows instructions describe supported devices appearing as Kindle or Kindle Scribe.
  3. Open the device’s internal storage. Copy the draft into the storage location appropriate for the file type, then wait for the copy operation to finish.
  4. Use Windows’ eject command before unplugging the cable. Removing the cable during a copy can leave an incomplete file.
  5. On the Kindle, open the library or the relevant document area and verify that the file opens.

Amazon specifies that the full Windows file path must not exceed 256 characters for a successful transfer. This includes the drive and folders as well as the file name. If Windows reports a path-related error, move the draft to a short folder such as a top-level Documents folder and give it a concise name, then try again.

USB pitfalls on Windows

  • Charging but no device: the cable may be power-only. Try a known data cable and another USB port.
  • Device appears but the file is missing: wait for the copy to finish, eject safely, reconnect and check the destination folder and file extension.
  • Copy is rejected: shorten the complete path to 256 characters or fewer and remove unusual characters from folder and file names.
  • Document opens differently: USB copies do not automatically gain the Scribe writing support associated with Send to Kindle imports. Use Send to Kindle when those features matter.

Copy files with USB on a Mac

Mac instructions depend on the Kindle generation. Amazon’s current help says Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require a separate application such as Send to Kindle for Mac for USB file management. Earlier Kindle models generally do not require that application, although Amazon notes a legacy macOS exception. Confirm the model-specific requirement rather than assuming that a Kindle will mount like a normal external drive.

Newer Kindle and Scribe models

  1. Install and open Amazon’s Send to Kindle for Mac application if your model requires it.
  2. Connect the unlocked Kindle with a USB data cable.
  3. Open the application’s USB File Manager.
  4. Drag the draft into the device’s available storage area and wait until the transfer completes.
  5. Eject the Kindle through the application or macOS before disconnecting it, then open the file on the reader.

The Mac USB File Manager does not support transferring more than 2,000 files at one time. Split a large batch into smaller groups. Amazon also says it cannot guarantee third-party Mac transfer software, so an unofficial utility that worked with an older Kindle may not be reliable with a newer model.

Earlier Kindle models

Some earlier models can be accessed directly through Finder after a USB connection, but support varies by model and macOS version. If the Kindle does not appear, do not repeatedly install unrelated transfer utilities. Check Amazon’s instructions for the exact Kindle generation and use Send to Kindle wirelessly when the file only needs to reach the library.

Export a handwritten Kindle Scribe notebook to a computer

A handwritten Scribe notebook uses the reader’s sharing tools rather than ordinary USB drag-and-drop. The Share workflow creates an exported copy and sends the recipient a download link. Amazon says the link expires after seven days, so download it promptly and store the file with the rest of the draft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step email export

  1. Open the notebook containing the handwritten draft on the Kindle Scribe.
  2. Open the notebook’s Share menu.
  3. Choose Quick send to the registered email address, or choose Share via email if you need to select or enter a recipient.
  4. Send the message and open it on the computer.
  5. Follow the download link in the message before it expires. Save the exported file locally and rename it clearly, for example with the notebook name and export date.

Email sharing is a copy workflow. Editing or renaming the downloaded file on the computer does not alter the original notebook on the Scribe. If you need another version after making changes on the Scribe, export the notebook again.

Export-format limits

The exact choices shown in Share depend on the Scribe model and software version. Amazon’s current feature information says some conversion-to-text and searchable-PDF options are limited to Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later. Do not assume that every Scribe can convert handwriting to editable text or create a searchable PDF; check the options displayed on the specific reader.

Use Google Drive or OneDrive with an eligible Scribe

Supported newer Kindle Scribe models can connect to Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive for document exchange. Amazon describes this as manual import and export, not continuous synchronization: “Files don’t automatically sync between your Kindle Scribe and cloud drives. You’ll need to import or export files manually.”

Import a computer file from a connected drive

  1. Connect the eligible Scribe to the supported Google Drive or OneDrive account through the Scribe’s account or cloud-drive settings.
  2. On the computer, place the draft in that connected drive and confirm that the upload has completed.
  3. On the Scribe, open the cloud-drive import option and select the file.
  4. Wait for the import to finish, then open the document on the Scribe and check its layout.

Export a Scribe document or notebook to a connected drive

  1. Confirm that the cloud account is connected and that the destination folder is available.
  2. On the Scribe, choose the document or notebook and use its export or share control.
  3. Select the connected Google Drive or OneDrive destination and start the export.
  4. On the computer, open the drive and wait for the exported copy to appear before editing or moving it.

Amazon’s Cloud Drive FAQ lists compatible imports including PDF, DOC and DOCX, TXT, RTF, PPT, Google Slides, image formats, HTML, EPUB and Google Docs. Files must be under 200 MB. Availability depends on the Scribe generation and the connected account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important cloud-drive restriction

A file transferred to the Scribe by USB cannot later be exported from the Scribe back to Google Drive or OneDrive. If you expect a round trip between the reader and a cloud drive, import the file through the connected drive in the first place, or use the email Share workflow for the return copy.

Preserve Scribe writing features when importing documents

The import route affects what you can do with a personal document on Scribe. Amazon’s guidance says some Scribe writing features are supported when a personal document is imported through Send to Kindle, but not when a PDF is loaded by USB. Therefore, choose the route based not only on speed but also on whether you need to write on, mark up or otherwise use Scribe-specific features with the imported document.

Goal Prefer Reason
Read a document in the Kindle library Send to Kindle Wireless delivery and broad supported-format list
Place a local file on the device without using the library USB Direct storage copy
Use supported Scribe writing features on a personal document Send to Kindle Amazon associates these features with that import route
Return a handwritten notebook to a computer Scribe Share by email Creates a downloadable exported copy
Maintain a manually managed exchange with a cloud account Connected Drive import/export Suitable for eligible models, subject to the USB restriction

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete transfer

The Kindle is not detected by the computer

  • Unlock the Kindle before connecting it.
  • Replace a charging-only cable with a data-capable USB cable.
  • Try another USB port and reconnect after safely ejecting the device.
  • On a Mac, check whether the Kindle generation requires Send to Kindle for Mac and its USB File Manager.

The file exceeds a limit

  • Send to Kindle and the Scribe cloud-drive import guidance state a maximum of 200 MB per file.
  • For a Windows USB transfer, shorten the complete path to 256 characters or fewer.
  • For Mac USB transfers, divide a batch containing more than 2,000 files into smaller batches.

The document arrives but does not look right

  • Open the file on the Kindle before deleting the source copy.
  • For a fixed-layout draft, compare PDF rendering with the original page layout.
  • For reflowable text, expect differences in pagination, fonts or image placement.
  • If the purpose is Scribe writing support, resend through Send to Kindle instead of loading a PDF by USB.

The exported Scribe link no longer works

Amazon says email-share download links expire after seven days. Reopen the notebook and send a new Share message, then download the replacement link on the computer.

The cloud-drive copy is missing

  • Confirm that the account is connected on the eligible Scribe.
  • Check that the file is under 200 MB and uses a listed compatible format.
  • Remember that import and export are manual; wait for the operation to complete rather than expecting an automatic background update.
  • If the source was copied to the Scribe by USB, export it by email instead because Amazon does not support exporting that USB-transferred file back to a connected drive.

A practical workflow for a continuing draft

For a draft that moves repeatedly between a computer and a Kindle Scribe, choose one primary source of truth and use one return path. For example, keep the editable master on the computer, send reading copies through Send to Kindle, and export handwritten annotations from Scribe by email when needed. If your Scribe supports a connected drive, use that drive for both import and export from the beginning rather than mixing USB imports with cloud exports. Keep dated filenames for every exported copy so that a handwritten revision cannot be mistaken for the latest editable document.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before disconnecting a cable or closing a transfer screen, verify the result on the destination device. A successful copy operation only proves that bytes moved; it does not prove that the Kindle can render the format or that the Scribe offers the handwriting features you expected.

Which method should you use?

  • Computer document to Kindle, no cable: use Send to Kindle and stay within the supported formats and 200 MB per-file limit.
  • Computer document to local Kindle storage: use USB; Windows uses File Explorer, while many 2024-era Kindle models and Kindle Scribe on Mac require Send to Kindle for Mac’s USB File Manager.
  • Handwritten Scribe notebook to computer: use Share, send it by email and download the link within seven days.
  • Repeated exchange with a cloud account: use connected Google Drive or OneDrive on an eligible Scribe, remembering that transfers are manual.
  • Scribe writing features on an imported personal document: choose Send to Kindle rather than loading a PDF by USB.
