The safest way to move from an old Android phone to a OnePlus 16 is to use the transfer option offered during the new phone’s setup, then check your important data before changing or erasing the old phone. OnePlus documents both wireless and cable-based Android-to-Android transfers, and its Clone Phone app can move many common categories without a network connection. The published instructions are generic OnePlus guidance, not verified OnePlus 16 screenshots, so follow the prompts actually displayed on your new phone.
What you can transfer to a OnePlus 16
An Android-to-Android move can include contacts, text messages, call history, calendar entries, photos, videos, audio and apps. OnePlus’s Clone Phone listing also says that data for certain apps can be moved. “Certain apps” is an important qualification: it does not mean every app’s internal data, account session or offline files will be copied.
Google’s Android setup process can copy apps and data from an old Android device as part of setting up the new phone. A phone managed by a business or school may be restricted from transferring all content, according to Google’s Android transfer guidance. Banking, authentication, work-management and other security-sensitive apps commonly require a fresh sign-in or separate re-enrollment even when the app itself is installed.

OnePlus describes its transfer page with the phrase “Data transfer has never been simpler.” That is promotional wording from OnePlus’s Steps to Transfer Your Phone page, not a measured claim about speed, reliability or completeness. No published migration-success, transfer-speed or completeness statistic establishes how a OnePlus 16 will perform.

Before you start: a preparation checklist
- Keep both phones together and charge them. A transfer can take long enough that a low battery interrupts setup.
- Unlock the old phone and confirm that its important content is still accessible. Open the photo gallery, contacts, messages and any app whose data you cannot replace.
- Install pending system or app updates only if the old phone remains stable and you have enough time. Do not begin a major update immediately before a time-critical move.
- Know the screen lock, Google account details and other credentials used on the old phone. You may need them when the new phone asks for confirmation.
- Decide whether you will use the new phone’s setup transfer, Clone Phone, Wi-Fi transfer or a cable. The choices shown can vary by phone, Android version and region.
- If choosing a wired route, obtain a suitable data cable. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable is a useful search phrase when both phones have USB-C ports, but confirm both connectors and data-transfer support before buying. OnePlus documents cable transfer but does not establish that a cable is included with every phone or regional package.
- Leave the old phone unchanged. Do not factory-reset it, trade it in or delete its files until you have verified the new phone.
Have a separate copy of irreplaceable photos or documents if possible. A phone-to-phone transfer is a convenience, not a substitute for a backup strategy.
Choose the route that matches your situation
| Route | Connection or requirement | What the published guidance establishes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android setup copy | Follow the choices shown while setting up the new phone | Google supports copying apps and data from an old Android device; managed devices may not transfer everything. | Use this when the OnePlus 16 offers transfer during first-time setup. |
| Clone Phone | Clone Phone available on the new OnePlus; the app listing describes Android-to-OnePlus transfer without a network connection | Lists contacts, SMS, call history, calendar, photos, videos, audio and apps, including data for certain apps. | Useful when you want OnePlus’s phone-to-phone utility and its category selection. |
| Wi-Fi transfer | Both phones participate in the wireless transfer flow shown by OnePlus | OnePlus’s guide presents connecting the old Android phone over Wi-Fi, choosing apps and data, and waiting for completion. | Choose it when you do not have a suitable cable. |
| Cable transfer | A compatible data cable and connectors on both phones | OnePlus’s guide presents a wired Android-to-Android workflow; it does not promise a cable in every box. | Choose it when the setup screen offers cable transfer and you have the right data cable. |
The general OnePlus instructions do not verify the exact OnePlus 16 menu labels, hardware configuration or regional availability. Treat the table as a choice of documented methods, then use the wording and buttons actually shown on your device.
Method 1: use the OnePlus 16 setup transfer
This is usually the most convenient starting point because the transfer choices appear while the new phone is being configured. The labels below describe the type of choice to look for, not guaranteed OnePlus 16 wording.
- Turn on the OnePlus 16 and begin its initial setup.
- When setup asks whether you want to copy apps or data from another device, choose the Android-to-Android transfer option.
- Keep the old phone unlocked and nearby. Approve the connection or pairing request shown on the old phone.
- Read the source and destination descriptions carefully so the old phone is selected as the device sending data and the OnePlus 16 as the receiving device.
- Choose the categories or individual items offered by the setup flow. Include only what you need if storage on the new phone is limited.
- Start the copy and leave both devices alone until the new phone reports completion. Do not switch off either phone or disconnect a cable during a wired transfer.
- Finish the remaining setup prompts, then perform the verification checks in the section below before changing the old phone.
If you already completed setup without copying data, the same transfer choice may not be available in exactly the same place. Do not assume that a factory reset is necessary: first inspect the settings and apps on the new phone for a transfer or migration option, and consult the on-device help. The retrieved OnePlus material does not establish a OnePlus 16-specific menu path.

Method 2: use Clone Phone
What Clone Phone can cover
The Google Play listing for Clone Phone, published by OnePlus Ltd. and shown as updated November 10, 2025, lists contacts, SMS, call history, calendar, photos, videos, audio and apps. It also describes data for certain apps. Supported data can vary with the phones’ systems and Android versions, so treat the list as a set of supported categories rather than a promise that every item will arrive intact.
Practical procedure
- On the new OnePlus, open Clone Phone if it is installed or available through the phone’s normal app-distribution channel.
- Select the option indicating that this phone is the new or receiving phone.
- On the old Android phone, open the corresponding Clone Phone flow when prompted and identify it as the old or sending phone.
- Allow the connection and grant only the permissions needed for the categories you intend to move. Android may display permission dialogs separately.
- Review the category list. Select contacts, messages, call history, calendar, photos, videos, audio and apps as appropriate.
- For apps, expect installation of the app package to be different from restoration of its private data. Record any app that is especially important and plan to open and sign in to it manually.
- Start the transfer. The listing says Android-to-OnePlus migration can occur without a network connection, but keep the phones close and do not leave the app until it reports that the operation is finished.
- Check the destination phone before deleting anything on the old phone.
Clone Phone is not evidence of a complete clone of the old handset. Secure app databases, protected media, downloaded files in unusual folders and account tokens may be excluded or require separate handling.
Method 3: follow OnePlus’s Wi-Fi transfer flow
OnePlus’s transfer guide presents an Android-to-Android wireless route. The page is generic, so your OnePlus 16 may use different names or arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the transfer or copy-data choice on the new OnePlus when setup presents it.
- Select the wireless or Wi-Fi method if it is offered.
- On the old Android phone, join the connection or scan the pairing prompt requested by the new phone.
- Approve the connection on both devices. Keep them close together and connected to power if practical.
- Review the available apps and data, then choose what to copy.
- Start the transfer and wait for the completion message. Avoid using either phone for unrelated tasks while the copy is running.
- Continue setup on the OnePlus 16 and verify the result.
No product is required for this documented wireless route. If the phones cannot establish the connection, return to the setup screen and choose another offered method rather than assuming that a particular Wi-Fi band, router or accessory is required; the published instructions do not specify those details.

Method 4: transfer with a cable
The same OnePlus page presents a cable workflow. It does not say that every OnePlus package includes a cable, and it does not establish that every old Android phone uses the same connector. Check both ends and make sure the cable supports data, not only charging.
- Connect the old Android phone and the OnePlus 16 with a compatible data cable when the new phone’s setup asks you to do so.
- Unlock the old phone and accept any prompt asking whether to allow data access or trust the connected device.
- On the new phone, select the option to copy apps and data from the connected Android device.
- Review the categories and items offered by the setup flow.
- Keep the cable firmly connected while the transfer runs. If a connector is loose, stop and reconnect only when the phone’s instructions allow it.
- Wait for the new phone to report completion, then finish setup and inspect the transferred content.
If the new phone charges but does not detect the old phone, the cable may be charge-only, a connector may be incompatible, or the old phone may require an on-screen USB permission. Try a known data cable or the wireless route. Do not infer from charging behavior that data transfer is working.
Verify the new phone before you erase the old one
A completion message means the transfer process ended; it does not prove that every app, account or file was restored. Use a deliberate checklist while the old phone is still available.
Contacts and communication
- Open Contacts and search for several people, including a recently added contact and one with notes or multiple numbers.
- Open the messaging app and check recent conversations, media attachments and any conversation you must retain.
- Review call history for the period that matters to you.
- Open Calendar and inspect upcoming events, recurring events and reminders.
Photos, videos, audio and files
- Scroll through recent and older photos, then open several videos and audio files rather than checking only thumbnails.
- Look in the new phone’s file manager for downloads and documents you deliberately kept on the old phone.
- Compare important folders or albums on both phones. A category selection can move camera media without moving every file stored elsewhere.
Apps and account access
- Confirm that the apps you rely on are installed and launch correctly.
- Open important apps one by one. Sign in again when requested, and follow each app’s own recovery or device-approval process.
- Pay special attention to banking, password-manager, authenticator, work and school apps. Their security design may prevent private data or active sessions from being copied.
- Check app-specific offline downloads, saved projects and locally stored documents.
Keep the old phone powered and unchanged until these checks pass. Only then should you sign out, remove accounts, move a SIM or eSIM according to your carrier’s instructions, and factory-reset or hand over the old device.

Troubleshoot an incomplete or interrupted transfer
The transfer does not start
Unlock both phones, confirm that the old phone is the sender and the OnePlus 16 is the receiver, and restart the transfer flow. If a wireless pairing request is waiting on one phone, approve it there. For cable transfer, reseat both connectors and try a cable known to carry data. If the setup screen offers Wi-Fi, use it instead of forcing a connection that the phones do not recognize.
Some apps are present but their data is missing
This is consistent with Clone Phone’s qualification that data is supported for certain apps, not all apps. Open the affected app and use its own sign-in, cloud-restore or export/import process. If the old phone still works, look for an in-app backup before wiping it.
Photos or documents are missing
Check whether they were stored locally, in a cloud account or inside an app. Recheck the source phone’s folders and albums, then copy only the missing files using the transfer option the phones provide. Do not delete the originals while you are comparing.

- 【Reliable & Supported】 Designed with a durable nylon braided jacket, this USB-C cable offers improved flexibility and long-lasting performance, tested to endure 40,000+ bends. Tinplate-reinforced connectors help protect against breakage at stress points. With gold-plated USB-C contacts, 86% high-purity tinned copper conductors, and a triple-layer shielding system (graphene + aluminum foil + internal shielding), it ensures reduced interference and consistently stable transmission
The process stops partway through
Charge both phones, close unrelated apps, ensure there is enough free storage on the OnePlus 16 and retry with fewer categories if the interface permits. A staged transfer can make it easier to identify a problematic category. Keep the old phone intact until the smaller batches have been checked.
What changes if the old phone is an iPhone?
This guide is for Android-to-Android migration. OnePlus and Google publish separate iPhone-to-Android material. Google’s Switch to Android guidance notes that the content available depends on the transfer method and compatible devices, and WhatsApp history may involve a distinct step. Do not apply the Android-to-Android Clone Phone or setup assumptions to an iPhone; use the iPhone-specific instructions shown for the method and devices you have.
OnePlus 16-specific limitations to keep in mind
The available OnePlus pages describe generic transfer flows, while the OxygenOS 16 page does not, by itself, verify the exact transfer screens, hardware combinations or regional availability of a OnePlus 16. Consequently:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Use only the cable or wireless option the two phones offer and support.
- Expect supported categories and app behavior to vary with Android versions and app security rules.
- Do not erase the old phone until contacts, messages, media, files and important app access have been checked.
With those qualifications, the practical decision is straightforward: start with the OnePlus 16’s setup transfer, choose Clone Phone when it is available and its category selection fits your needs, use Wi-Fi when you lack a suitable cable, and choose a verified data cable when the wired option is offered.
