Use Samsung Smart Switch to move data from your old Galaxy phone to your new one. The old phone sends, the new phone receives, and you can transfer wirelessly or with a compatible cable. Wireless avoids extra accessories; a cable may need an adapter depending on the phones. Smart Switch lets you choose from the content it supports, so review its selections rather than assuming every app, account, or setting will transfer.
What you need before starting
- Have both phones available and open Smart Switch on each. Recent Galaxy devices normally include the app; if it is missing, download Smart Switch. - For wireless transfer, keep both phones close together. Samsung’s US instructions say to keep them within four inches and plugged into chargers. Samsung US Smart Switch instructions
- For wired transfer, check that your cable fits both phones; depending on their models and ports, an adapter may be needed. Samsung Canada support
- A Samsung UK Android-transfer FAQ specifies at least 500 MB of free internal storage on both devices and says a wired transfer requires USB support for “Transferring media files (MTP).” Treat these as Samsung’s published setup guidance; your device’s prompts take priority. Samsung UK FAQ
How to transfer data wirelessly with Smart Switch
- Open Smart Switch on both phones. If it is not installed on a device, download it before continuing.
- On the old phone, tap Send from this phone. On the new phone, tap Receive on this phone. Exact labels can differ; follow the equivalent Send and Receive options displayed on your devices. Samsung US Smart Switch instructions
- Choose Wireless when asked how to connect, then follow the connection prompts on both phones. Keep them close; Samsung US recommends a separation of no more than four inches and keeping both phones on chargers. Samsung US Smart Switch instructions
- Review the categories Smart Switch offers, select what you want to move, and start the transfer.
- Wait for the transfer to finish and follow any remaining on-screen prompts before setting the phones aside.
Samsung describes wireless as its preferred way to copy data to a new device. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that wireless will be faster for every phone or amount of data. Samsung Smart Switch support
How to transfer data with a cable
- Connect the two phones with a compatible data cable. Use an adapter if the phones’ connectors require one. Samsung does not specify one cable that works universally across models. Samsung Canada support
- Open Smart Switch if prompted. Choose Send on the old phone and Receive on the new one; the precise wording may vary.
- Choose the content to transfer from the options shown, then begin.
- Keep the phones connected until the transfer is complete. Do not unplug the cable while data is transferring. Samsung Canada support
What Smart Switch can move
Samsung lists possible transfer categories such as contacts, schedule, messages, photos, videos, music, call log, and documents. The actual list depends on the connected devices. Samsung marks some categories—including voice memos, alarm settings, home- and lock-screen images, Wi-Fi settings, email settings, and app data—as Galaxy-device-only. Which transfer method should you use?

Can you use a computer instead?
Samsung also documents backing up a phone to a computer with Smart Switch and restoring that backup to the new device. This adds a backup-and-restore step and requires a computer and USB connection.
