The most direct way to move data from an older Android phone to a vivo foldable is vivo’s EasyShare Phone clone. On the new vivo, open EasyShare > Phone clone, choose Android as the old-phone type, scan the QR code shown by the old phone, select what to copy, and accept the transfer. Keep both phones charged and unlocked, confirm that the vivo has enough free storage, and do not erase the old phone until you have checked your important data.
Android’s own setup transfer is a separate option. It can copy apps, contacts, messages, photos, videos, settings and other categories by cable or Wi-Fi, but it is not a complete byte-for-byte clone. Downloads such as PDFs, hidden-folder media, some app data, non-Google accounts and several settings may need separate handling. If the old phone is unavailable, restore an existing Google Account backup during setup, subject to backup availability and Android-version compatibility.
Choose the transfer route that fits your situation
There are three practical routes. Your choice depends mainly on whether the old phone is present and unlockable, whether the vivo foldable has already been set up, and whether you have a suitable cable.
| Route | Old phone required? | Connection | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| vivo EasyShare Phone clone | Yes, and it must be usable to generate the pairing code | QR-paired direct transfer between phones | A vivo-specific migration after or during setup | Exact menu labels and availability can vary by vivo model, region and software version; same-app data on the destination can be overwritten |
| Android setup transfer | Normally yes and unlockable | Compatible cable or supported Wi-Fi transfer | Copying broad Android categories while setting up the new phone | Some downloads, hidden-folder media, app data, accounts and settings are excluded |
| Google Account backup restore | No, if a usable backup already exists | Internet connection during setup | Recovering data when the old phone is lost, damaged or unavailable | Only backed-up categories can be restored, and Android-version differences can make restoration incomplete |
You can use more than one route, but plan the order. Running a second migration after apps have been configured may replace destination data, and vivo specifically warns that data for the same apps on the new phone will be overwritten when file transfer finishes.

Prepare both phones before copying anything
Charge, unlock and connect
- Charge both phones, preferably well above the minimum needed for the expected transfer.
- Make sure you know the old phone’s screen lock and can unlock it. A phone that cannot be unlocked cannot reliably authorize copying or display its transfer code.
- Connect the new vivo foldable to the internet. Google’s setup transfer requires an internet connection, and cloud restoration also needs one.
- Keep the phones close together during a direct or wireless transfer and avoid restarting either device until the process reports completion.
Check destination storage
Open the vivo’s storage settings and compare free space with the photos, videos, downloads and other files you intend to copy. A transfer can fail or stop if the destination fills. Do not assume that the advertised capacity is all available: the operating system and preinstalled software already use part of it.
Audit the old phone first
Make a short list of content that would be difficult to replace: contacts, camera photos, videos, text messages, call history, documents, authenticator access, work files and data inside high-priority apps. This list determines what you must verify later. It also exposes items that a standard Android transfer does not promise to copy, such as PDFs in Downloads or data belonging to non-Google accounts.
Decide whether the destination already contains data
If the vivo foldable has been used, review what is already on it before starting. EasyShare’s warning about overwriting data from the same apps matters most when you have already signed in, created files or configured accounts on the new phone. Back up anything on the vivo that you do not want replaced.

Method 1: Transfer with vivo EasyShare Phone clone
vivo’s documented direct migration path uses EasyShare and a QR-code pairing step. The wording and icon arrangement shown in a manual may not be identical on every vivo foldable, so follow the prompts displayed by your phone.
Rank #2
- Move Files Fast: Transfer music, movies, or entire seasons of TV shows in seconds at 40 Gbps.
- HD Display: Connect your laptop to an external monitor to mirror or extend your screen in up to 8K@60Hz or 4K@144Hz.

- Open Phone clone on the old Android phone. Use the old phone to start the sender side of the transfer and generate its QR code. If the old phone offers a role such as “old phone,” “send” or “source,” select it.
- Open EasyShare on the vivo foldable. Go to EasyShare > Phone clone. Select Android when asked what type of old phone you are using.
- Scan the QR code. Use the vivo’s scanner to read the code displayed on the old phone. Keep both screens awake while they pair.
- Review the file selection. Select the categories or files you want to clone. Scroll through the selection rather than accepting it blindly, especially if the vivo already contains app data or if storage is limited.
- Start and accept the transfer. Begin cloning on the old phone and accept or receive the transfer on the vivo when prompted. Leave both phones nearby and avoid opening other demanding apps.
- Wait for the completion message. A transfer that appears finished should still be checked in the destination’s file manager, gallery, contacts and relevant apps.
What the overwrite warning means
vivo’s manual states: “When file transfer is complete, the data of the same apps on the new phone will be overwritten.” In practical terms, selecting app-related content can replace data already associated with those apps on the vivo. If you have already created messages, files, game progress or settings on the new phone, save or export them first, or remove them from the selection if they are not needed.
When Phone clone is the better first choice
Use EasyShare first when the old phone is available, you want a direct vivo workflow, and you are comfortable reviewing the items that will be copied. It is especially useful after initial setup if you do not want to reset the new phone merely to reach Android’s setup-copy screen. It does not remove the need to inspect app-specific accounts, downloads or files in unusual folders.
Method 2: Use Android’s setup transfer
Google’s Android setup flow offers a broader setup-time copy path. It supports a cable, which Google recommends when available, or a wireless option on devices that support it.
Start during initial setup
- Turn on the vivo foldable and begin its setup.
- When prompted to copy apps and data, choose that option rather than skipping it.
- Choose a cable or wireless transfer according to the options shown on the vivo.
- For a cable transfer, use a data cable that physically fits both phones. If the connectors differ, an appropriate adapter may be required. A charging-only cable will not perform a data copy.
- For wireless transfer, follow the pairing instructions shown on both phones. Wi-Fi transfer is not available on every device.
- Unlock the old phone when requested, review the categories available for copying, and start the transfer.
- Keep both phones connected and follow the progress prompts. Google describes the duration as ranging from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data and the transfer process.
What Android setup can copy
Google says setup transfer can copy apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages and their multimedia attachments, most phone settings, wallpaper and call history. Which settings and app data are available can vary with the device and Android version.

What Android setup does not promise to copy
- Downloaded files such as PDFs.
- Photos, videos and music stored in hidden folders.
- Applications installed outside Google Play.
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Non-Google accounts and the data associated with them.
- Contacts and calendars synchronized with non-Google services.
- Ringtones and certain settings.
These exclusions are why “transfer everything” should be treated as a goal requiring verification, not as a guarantee of an exact clone. An app may appear on the vivo while its account, local database or downloaded content still needs an in-app sign-in or restore.
Restore a Google Account backup when the old phone is unavailable
If the old Android phone is lost, damaged or no longer usable, choose the restore-from-backup option during the vivo’s setup. This works only if backup was enabled on the old device and the relevant data was actually included in the stored backup.
- Connect the vivo to the internet during setup.
- Sign in with the Google Account used for the old phone’s backup.
- When setup offers available backups, inspect the date and device details and select the appropriate one.
- Review the categories offered for restoration and continue.
- After setup, open important apps and complete any sign-in or in-app restore steps they require.
Google’s backup guidance is version-sensitive. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. The phones should be on the same Android version, or the vivo should run a later version. If the version relationship is unfavorable, some content may not transfer even though a backup exists.
WhatsApp requires its own backup path
Google says WhatsApp chats and data restore from the cloud after you sign in and open WhatsApp on the new device. WhatsApp backup must have been enabled on the old phone first. A normal phone-to-phone copy should not be treated as proof that every WhatsApp conversation is available; open the app on the vivo and follow its restore prompt.
Rank #4

Data-by-data checklist
| Data | Likely route | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts | Android setup can copy phone- or SIM-stored contacts | Check contacts stored in non-Google services separately; confirm names, numbers and groups on the vivo |
| Photos and videos | Android setup and Phone clone may copy selected media | Inspect camera folders, albums and hidden folders; compare counts for irreplaceable media |
| Text messages and attachments | Android setup can copy messages and their multimedia | Open several old conversations and confirm attachments where they matter |
| Apps | Android setup can copy apps; Phone clone can copy selected app-related data | Open high-priority apps, sign in, and check local data; apps outside Google Play may need separate installation |
| Downloads and documents | Not guaranteed by Android setup | Use the old phone’s file manager to locate PDFs and other files, then copy them separately if needed |
| Music and ringtones | Some music may copy; ringtones are listed among setup exclusions | Check locally stored tracks and recreate or copy custom ringtones |
| Accounts and calendars | Google data may restore when you sign in | Non-Google accounts and their synchronized data need their own sign-in or export process |
| Call history and settings | Android setup can copy call history and most settings | Review device-specific settings, permissions, notifications and wireless preferences because support varies |
| Cloud restore after backup and sign-in | Confirm that a backup existed on the old phone and complete WhatsApp’s restore prompt |
Verify the vivo before retiring the old phone
Do not factory-reset, trade in or give away the old phone immediately after a completion message. Verification is the safety step that catches excluded files, incomplete app restores and account-specific data.
- Contacts: search for several people, including entries stored on the phone or SIM, and check that important numbers are present.
- Photos and videos: open recent, old and favorite items. Check albums and use the file manager for folders that the gallery may not show.
- Messages: open representative conversations, including ones with media or information you need for work or records.
- Files: look in Downloads and document folders for PDFs, scans, receipts and exported files. These are specifically not guaranteed by Android setup transfer.
- Apps: launch banking, work, password, authentication, messaging and navigation apps. Confirm sign-in, local records and any in-app restore.
- WhatsApp: open it, sign in and confirm that the expected cloud backup restored.
- Calls and settings: inspect call history, alarms, notification behavior, wallpaper and other settings you rely on daily.
Keep the old phone powered off but available until every high-priority item has another verified copy. If something is missing, you may still be able to copy it manually or repeat a narrower transfer without losing the original.
Troubleshoot common transfer failures
The cable is not detected
- Unplug and firmly reseat both ends.
- Try another cable known to support data, not only charging.
- Check that any adapter is fully attached and compatible with the connectors.
- Inspect the old phone’s port for lint or debris and clean it only with a safe, non-damaging method.
- Unlock the old phone and respond to any USB or trust prompt.
- If cable troubleshooting fails, use the supported Wi-Fi route or EasyShare Phone clone instead.
Wireless transfer is missing or very slow
Google says only certain devices support Wi-Fi transfer. Follow the vivo’s setup prompts rather than assuming that every Android phone can use the same wireless method. If the phone requests a cable, provide a compatible one. For a slow transfer, keep the devices close, prevent them from sleeping and reduce competing network activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou skipped copying during setup
Some phones later show a Finish setting up notification or a manufacturer-specific copy-data option in Settings. Availability varies. Look for those options before considering a reset. A factory reset erases data currently on the vivo, so first back up anything new on it and confirm the current model’s instructions. Do not reset solely because a generic menu path is absent.

The old phone is unavailable and no backup appears
Restore can use only a backup that exists and contains the needed categories. If no backup was enabled, or the backup is incomplete, official Android guidance does not promise recovery of data that was never backed up. Check that you signed in with the correct Google Account and that the selected backup belongs to the old device, but do not assume a missing cloud copy can be reconstructed automatically.
The transfer completed but content is missing
First check whether the missing item belongs to an excluded category. Look in the old phone’s Downloads and hidden folders, verify non-Google account synchronization, and open the affected app for its own restore or sign-in process. If the missing data was selected in EasyShare but the destination already had the same app, review whether the overwrite warning explains the result.
Important vivo foldable model and software caveat
The documented EasyShare workflow is generic rather than a guarantee for every vivo foldable, country or firmware release. The available vivo manuals show the Phone clone path and QR sequence, but they do not establish identical screens, labels or feature availability on every model. Use the on-screen EasyShare prompts as the final authority for your phone. If a model-specific manual presents a different path, follow that current manual.
The same caution applies to Android setup transfer. The categories offered, wireless support and post-setup recovery options can vary with Android version and manufacturer software. Treat the tables in this guide as planning guidance, then use the choices displayed on the devices.
A practical final checklist
- Both phones are charged and the old phone can be unlocked.
- The vivo has internet access and enough free storage.
- You have decided between EasyShare, Android setup transfer and Google backup restore.
- You reviewed what is already stored on the vivo before allowing app data to be replaced.
- You have a compatible data cable and adapter only if you choose the cable route.
- You noted documents, hidden-folder media, non-Google accounts and app-specific data that need separate checks.
- You completed WhatsApp’s own cloud restore if applicable.
- You checked contacts, photos, messages, files, important apps, call history and settings.
- The old phone remains available until missing items are resolved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer data to a vivo foldable after I have finished setup?
Yes. vivo’s EasyShare Phone clone is designed as a direct phone-to-phone route that can be opened after setup. Android’s copy-data screen is primarily part of initial setup, although some phones later offer a Finish setting up or manufacturer-specific copy option.
Will every app transfer with its data?
No. Android says some app data is copied, but apps that do not use Android backup, apps installed outside Google Play and app-specific local data may require separate installation, sign-in or restore steps.
Do I need to buy cloud storage to restore my old phone?
No purchase is established as necessary here. Cloud restore uses an existing Google Account backup; whether it works depends on backup availability, included categories and Android-version compatibility.
