The safest way to transfer data to a new iPad mini is to make a fresh backup of the old iPad first, then use Quick Start if both iPads are available. Quick Start can transfer directly between compatible iPads. If the old iPad is unavailable, restore an iCloud backup; if you have a local backup, restore it with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.

Keep the old iPad, its backup, your Apple Account password, and any required cable available until the new iPad mini has finished downloading content and you have checked that the transfer succeeded.

Choose the right transfer method

Apple supports three practical routes for moving data from an old iPad to a new iPad mini: Quick Start, an iCloud backup, or a backup stored on a computer. The best choice depends less on the iPad mini model than on what you have available at the start.

Method Use it when Requirements and trade-offs
Quick Start and direct transfer Both iPads are with you and meet Apple’s compatibility requirements. Keep the iPads near each other and connected to power. Apple’s iPad guide describes wireless direct transfer when both devices run iPadOS 13 or later. The process is guided by the setup screens.
iCloud backup The old iPad is unavailable, or you prefer a cloud restore. You need the correct Apple Account, an available backup, Wi-Fi, and enough time for content to download after setup. Temporary iCloud storage may be offered to eligible purchasers of a new device, but it is not guaranteed.
Computer backup You already have a local backup or want to restore over USB. You need a compatible USB cable, a Mac or Windows computer, and the password for an encrypted backup if the backup was protected.

If you are unsure, make a fresh backup first and start with Quick Start. That gives you a fallback if direct migration is interrupted or the new iPad mini has to be erased and set up again.

Prepare the old iPad and new iPad mini

Preparation prevents the most serious transfer mistake: erasing or disconnecting the only usable copy of your data before the new iPad mini is ready.

1. Keep the old iPad available

Do not trade in, sell, erase, or send the old iPad for repair until you have checked the new device. Even when Quick Start is used, retaining the old iPad gives you another opportunity to create a backup or repeat the setup.

2. Make a fresh backup

Create a current iCloud or computer backup before beginning the new-device setup. A recent backup is especially important if you choose the iCloud or computer route, because the restore list may contain several older copies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm the Apple Account password

Have the password for the Apple Account used on the old iPad ready. You may need it to sign in during setup or to access iCloud content. If you use a computer backup and that backup is encrypted, also locate the separate password created for the encrypted backup.

4. Put both iPads on power

Connect both devices to power before starting a direct transfer. For iCloud setup, connect the new iPad mini to power as well; restoration and later downloads can continue for a long time, depending on the backup and network.

5. Check wireless and cable conditions

  • For Quick Start, keep the iPads close together and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the old iPad.
  • For an iCloud restore, use a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
  • For a computer restore, inspect the connector on each iPad and the available port on the computer. Use an existing cable if it fits both ends and supports data, rather than assuming every charging cable can transfer a backup.

Exact setup labels can vary by iPadOS release and region. Follow the wording shown on your devices if it differs slightly from the labels below.

Transfer directly with Quick Start

Quick Start is the most convenient option when the old iPad is present. Apple’s iPad guide describes wireless transfer of all data from the previous device when both iPads use iPadOS 13 or later. If either iPad is on an older release, use an iCloud or computer backup instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the setup pairing

  1. Turn on the new iPad mini. If it has not been configured, it will display the Hello screen.
  2. Place the old iPad next to the new iPad mini and unlock the old device.
  3. Follow the Quick Start prompt that appears on the old iPad. If no prompt appears, confirm that Bluetooth is enabled, move the devices closer together, and connect both to power.
  4. Use the old iPad to scan the animation shown on the new iPad mini when prompted.
  5. Enter the old iPad’s passcode on the new iPad mini.
  6. Sign in with the Apple Account requested by setup. This is why confirming the password before starting matters.

Select direct transfer or iCloud

Quick Start may offer a direct transfer from the old iPad or an iCloud-based option. Choose direct transfer when both iPads are available and the wireless connection is stable. Choose the iCloud route if you need to keep using the old iPad, if the direct connection is unreliable, or if the setup screen presents iCloud as the more practical choice.

Leave the devices alone while migration runs

Keep the iPads near each other and connected to power until the migration finishes. Do not reset the old iPad, turn off Bluetooth during pairing, or move one device out of range. The initial transfer can finish before every app, photo, song, or other iCloud item has downloaded; the new iPad mini may continue completing that work afterward.

If Quick Start cannot be used

Quick Start is not a requirement for owning a new iPad mini. If the old iPad is missing, incompatible, or unable to stay connected, canceling the attempt does not remove the backup you made beforehand. Start the new iPad mini from its setup flow and use the iCloud or computer instructions below.

Restore the new iPad mini from iCloud

Use this method when the old iPad is not available or when you have a current iCloud backup you want to restore. The new iPad mini must be at the Hello/setup stage for Apple’s restore-from-backup steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore during first-time setup

  1. Turn on the new iPad mini and proceed from the Hello screen until setup asks how you want to transfer your apps and data.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted.
  3. Choose Restore from iCloud Backup or the equivalent iCloud restore option shown on the screen.
  4. Sign in with the Apple Account that owns the backup.
  5. Review the available backups. Check each backup’s date and size, then select the one created from the old iPad that you intend to use.
  6. Keep the iPad mini connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restore runs.

Apple may offer temporary iCloud storage when you buy a new device, but eligibility is conditional. Do not assume that offer will appear or that it replaces a backup you already made. If the temporary-storage option is shown, follow the on-screen instructions and still keep the old iPad until the new one is verified.

Allow content to download after the restore

A restored backup does not necessarily mean every item is immediately present. Photos, apps, music, and other iCloud content can continue downloading after the initial setup. Leave the iPad mini on Wi-Fi and power and avoid judging the transfer by the first screen you see after setup. Apple states: “The time it takes to restore varies depending on the backup size and your network speed.”

If the new iPad mini is already set up

Apple’s restore-from-backup procedure expects the new iPad to be at the Hello/setup stage. If you have already completed setup, confirm that the desired backup exists before erasing the device. Then open Settings, choose General, select Transfer or Reset iPad, and use the erase option to return the iPad mini to the setup screen. Erasing removes the current contents of the new device, so do not do it until you have verified the backup you plan to restore.

Restore a computer backup over USB

A computer restore is useful when you have a local backup, limited Wi-Fi, or prefer not to rely on a cloud download for the initial setup. Apple lists Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes as computer-based routes; which app you see depends on your computer’s operating system and software.

Know which computer app to use

  • On macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, use Finder.
  • On Windows 10 or later, use Apple Devices when it is installed and available.
  • Apple also lists iTunes as a transfer route on systems where it remains the applicable software.

Labels can differ between versions. The required action is to select the connected iPad and choose the command to restore a backup.

Create or confirm the local backup

  1. Connect the old iPad to the computer with a compatible USB data cable.
  2. Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes and select the old iPad.
  3. Use the backup command to create a current backup or confirm that a recent backup is listed.
  4. If you enable encrypted local backup, record its password securely. An encrypted backup will ask for that password when you restore it.
  5. Wait for the backup to finish before disconnecting the old iPad.

If you already made the backup earlier, check its date and size before restoring. A backup that predates important changes on the old iPad may not contain the latest versions of your data.

Restore the backup to the new iPad mini

  1. Start the new iPad mini and continue until the setup process reaches the transfer or restore screen.
  2. Connect the iPad mini to the computer with the compatible USB cable.
  3. Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes and select the new iPad mini.
  4. Choose Restore Backup.
  5. Select the intended backup by checking its date and size.
  6. Enter the encrypted-backup password if the software requests it.
  7. Keep the iPad mini connected until the restore completes, then leave it on power and Wi-Fi so cloud content and app downloads can finish.

If the new iPad mini is already configured, return it to the Hello/setup screen before using this restore procedure. Confirm the backup first, because erasing the iPad mini removes its current setup and content.

What to check after setup

Post-setup downloads can make the iPad mini appear incomplete even when the backup restored correctly. Use a deliberate verification rather than erasing the old iPad immediately.

  • Open Photos and confirm that recent pictures and videos begin appearing.
  • Check the Home Screen and App Library for the apps you expect. Apps may still be downloading.
  • Open the Music app or other media locations and confirm that your library is being restored or redownloaded.
  • Check files and other iCloud content that you relied on from the old iPad.
  • Confirm that the Apple Account shown in Settings is the account associated with the backup.
  • Leave the iPad mini connected to Wi-Fi and power until pending downloads have stopped or clearly progressed.

Do not erase the old iPad merely because the first setup screen looks correct. Keep it available until the content you care about has been checked and the new iPad mini can be used normally.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems

Quick Start does not appear

Unlock the old iPad, enable Bluetooth, place both iPads next to each other, and connect them to power. If the old iPad or new iPad mini does not meet the iPadOS 13-or-later requirement described for direct wireless transfer, switch to iCloud or a computer backup. If the prompt still does not appear, restart both devices and begin again from the Hello screen.

The direct transfer stops or fails

Keep both iPads powered and nearby, then allow the setup process to retry. If the attempt cannot be completed, use the fresh backup you created before starting. If the new iPad mini has reached a partial setup state, erase it only after confirming that the backup is present, then restore from iCloud or a computer.

The backup list shows several choices

Compare the date and size shown for each backup. Select the copy made from the old iPad most recently, unless you have a specific reason to use an older version. Do not select by position alone; the newest-looking entry is not necessarily the backup from the iPad you want to migrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no usable iCloud backup

Return to the old iPad if you still have it and make a fresh backup. Temporary iCloud storage is available only to eligible new-device purchasers, so its absence is not an error. A computer backup is the alternative when the old iPad is available but cloud storage or network access is a problem.

The computer asks for an encrypted-backup password

The password belongs to the encrypted local backup, not necessarily the Apple Account. Locate the password you set when encryption was enabled. The computer restore cannot proceed through that prompt without the required password; if you have another current backup, return to the iCloud or alternate computer-backup route instead.

The cable is not recognized

Disconnect and reconnect the cable, try another compatible data cable if available, and check the ports on both the iPad and computer. A cable that supplies power may not support data transfer. If the computer still does not detect the iPad, use iCloud or another computer connection rather than erasing the old device.

The new iPad mini is already configured

Backup restoration through setup requires the Hello screen. Verify that the intended backup exists, then erase the new iPad mini and repeat setup. Do not erase it first and investigate the backup afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final transfer checklist

  1. The old iPad remains available.
  2. A fresh iCloud or computer backup exists.
  3. The Apple Account password is known.
  4. The encrypted-backup password is available if you used encryption.
  5. Both iPads are powered for Quick Start, or the new iPad mini has Wi-Fi and power for an iCloud restore.
  6. The USB cable fits the iPad and computer if you are using a local backup.
  7. The selected backup’s date and size match the old iPad.
  8. Photos, apps, music, files, and other important iCloud content have been checked on the new iPad mini.
  9. The old iPad has not been erased until verification is complete.
