To transfer an old Apple Watch to an Apple Watch SE 3, pair the SE 3 with the iPhone that backed up the old watch, then choose the previous watch backup when setup offers it. Keep the iPhone unlocked and nearby, leave both devices connected to power or with sufficient charge, and let setup and synchronization finish before using the new watch.
The Apple Watch normally backs up through its paired iPhone. If you are also replacing the iPhone, restore the latest iPhone backup first; that backup includes Apple Watch data.
The two transfer situations
Your steps depend on whether the iPhone is staying the same.

Before you begin
Check compatibility and update the iPhone
For Apple Watch SE 3 setup, Apple specifies an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Install available iPhone updates before beginning, then turn on Bluetooth and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular service. These are setup prerequisites, not optional performance tips; an older iPhone model or an earlier iOS release may not be offered as a compatible pairing device.
- Use an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
- Have the Apple Account sign-in details and the old watch passcode available.
- Keep the old watch, the iPhone and the new SE 3 close together during the handoff.
Prepare the old watch backup
The paired iPhone backs up Apple Watch content automatically when the devices are near one another. Apple states: “When you unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone, the watch is backed up to your iPhone to make sure the latest data is saved.” If you are replacing the watch, do not erase or discard the old one before its final backup has completed.
Unpairing the old watch from the iPhone performs a backup as part of the process. If you want the newest possible copy, keep the watch and iPhone together, allow normal synchronization, and then use the unpair command in the Apple Watch app before starting the SE 3 setup.
Check Health and Activity protection
Health and Activity information needs special attention when you are moving an iPhone as well as a watch.
- For an iCloud-based iPhone backup, confirm that Health is syncing in iCloud.
- For a computer-based iPhone backup, turn on backup encryption. Apple says an encrypted computer backup is required to preserve Health and Activity content.
- Use the same Apple Account on the replacement devices. Health and Activity data stored in iCloud updates on devices signed in to that account.
When transferring to a new iPhone, Apple says both iPhones need Wi-Fi, and the Apple Watch and the new iPhone should each have at least 50 percent charge. Meet those conditions before starting the phone migration.
How do I transfer data from my old Apple Watch to my new Apple Watch?
Use these steps when you are keeping the same iPhone.
- Finish the old-watch backup. Keep the old watch and iPhone near each other. The iPhone is the ordinary backup destination, so allow automatic backup and synchronization to run. If you are retiring the old watch, unpair it from the iPhone; unpairing makes a current backup before the watch is removed.
- Turn on the Apple Watch SE 3. Place it beside the unlocked iPhone. Follow the pairing prompt that appears on the iPhone. If no prompt appears, open the Apple Watch app and use its option to add or pair a watch.
- Choose the setup path. If the iPhone already has another Apple Watch configured, Apple presents setup choices. Review Express Setup, or choose the option to customize setup when you want to select a specific backup from the previous watch.
- Select the old watch backup. Choose the most recent backup associated with the watch you are replacing. This is the restore step that brings backed-up settings and watch data to the SE 3.
- Complete the on-screen requirements. Sign in to the Apple Account if asked, create or enter the watch passcode, review settings, and install any required watch software update. The exact prompts can vary with the iPhone’s software and the watch backup.
- Leave both devices together. Keep the iPhone unlocked or nearby as requested, and keep the SE 3 close until setup and synchronization finish. Interrupting the process can leave the watch only partially configured.
What Express Setup means
Express Setup is the quicker path offered when the iPhone recognizes that another Apple Watch has already been configured. It applies the standard setup choices with fewer individual decisions. If preserving a particular old-watch configuration is your priority, use the customization option and explicitly select the previous watch backup rather than relying on default choices.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat the restore does not mean
A restore is based on the information saved in the selected backup; it is not a live copy of every change ever made on the old watch. Activity, Workouts or settings changed after the last successful backup may not appear. Health information that is stored and synchronized in iCloud follows the Apple Account and iCloud settings rather than depending solely on the watch backup.

How do I restore my Apple Watch from a backup?
Restoration occurs during initial pairing, not from a separate “restore later” screen on a watch that has already been configured. Start the SE 3 setup, wait for the iPhone to show the available previous-watch choices, select the customization path, and pick the backup you want.
If you have already completed setup as a new watch and now want to use an older backup, the watch must generally be erased and paired again before a backup can be chosen. Erasing removes the current watch setup, so first make sure there is nothing on the newly configured watch that you still need.
The backup list can contain more than one entry if the iPhone has backed up different watches or has retained multiple backups. Select the entry belonging to the watch you are replacing and prefer the newest one unless you have a specific reason to use an earlier copy.

If you are also moving to a new iPhone
When the iPhone changes, migrate the phone first. Apple’s Pair your Apple Watch with a new iPhone guidance treats the iPhone backup as the container for the watch backup.
1. Update the old devices
Install available updates on the old iPhone and Apple Watch before creating the phone backup. Updating first reduces the chance that the new iPhone cannot recognize the watch backup or requires an avoidable compatibility update during setup.
2. Back up the old iPhone
Back up the old iPhone to iCloud or to a computer. Apple says backing up the iPhone also backs up Apple Watch data. If you use a computer, enable encryption before starting the backup so Health and Activity content is included.
If you use iCloud, verify Health synchronization in the iPhone’s iCloud settings and make sure the backup is tied to the Apple Account you will use on the new iPhone. A backup that belongs to a different account will not provide the same iCloud Health data on the replacement device.
3. Configure the new iPhone from the latest backup
Start the new iPhone and choose the most recent backup of the old iPhone when the setup assistant asks how to transfer your information. Keep both iPhones connected to Wi-Fi. Do not choose an older phone backup simply because it appears first; check the backup date and select the latest one that contains your watch and phone data.

4. Finish Apple Watch pairing
During the new-iPhone setup, Apple may ask you to keep the Apple Watch unlocked and on your wrist. Follow that prompt. If the new iPhone does not automatically continue with the watch, open the Apple Watch app after the phone migration and follow its pairing flow.
When the app offers a previous-watch backup, select it. Keep the SE 3 and new iPhone close together while the watch restores, downloads any required software and synchronizes information. The new iPhone may continue restoring apps and other content in the background, so allow that process to complete before judging whether all watch-related data has appeared.
5. Verify the Apple Account and Health data
Sign in with the same Apple Account used on the old iPhone. Health data stored in iCloud updates on devices signed in to that account. If you used a computer backup, the backup must have been encrypted for Health and Activity content to be carried forward.
What happens to Health, Activity and sharing data?
Health data in iCloud
Apple says Health and Activity data stored in iCloud updates across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This synchronization is separate from selecting an Apple Watch backup during pairing. If Health data is not appearing, first verify that iCloud Health syncing is enabled and that the new iPhone uses the same account.
Health and Activity in a computer backup
When a computer is the backup destination, encryption matters. Apple’s transfer guidance says to encrypt the computer backup to save Health and Activity content. An unencrypted computer backup can restore much of the iPhone and watch configuration while omitting those protected records.
Activity Sharing
Apple states that iCloud does not store Activity Sharing data. Therefore, a successful watch restore or iCloud Health synchronization should not be interpreted as a promise that Activity Sharing history will reappear. This is a limitation of what Apple stores in iCloud, not an indication that pairing failed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the old iPhone is gone
If the Apple Watch is still paired to an old iPhone that is no longer available, Apple’s recovery guidance says to erase the watch, pair it with the new iPhone, and then try restoring from a backup. Erasing is necessary because the watch still belongs to the unavailable pairing relationship.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Erase the Apple Watch using the watch’s available erase option.
- Bring the erased watch near the new iPhone and start pairing.
- When setup presents backups, attempt to restore the most recent available copy.
- If no backup is available, choose the option to set up the watch as new.
Any changes made after the last backup can be lost. Apple specifically notes that a restore may not include Activity, Workouts or settings changed after that backup. If there is no backup at all, setting up as new is the only available path for that watch.

Restore the old configuration or start as new?
| Choice | Best when | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Restore a previous backup | You want the SE 3 to retain the old watch’s backed-up settings and data. | The selected backup is applied during pairing. Anything changed after that backup is outside the restore. |
| Set up as new | You want a clean configuration, or no usable backup exists. | The SE 3 starts without the old watch’s backed-up settings. You configure preferences and apps again. |
| Express Setup | You want the quickest standard setup offered by the iPhone. | The iPhone applies the standard setup flow with fewer customization decisions. |
Choose restore when continuity matters more than a clean start. Choose set up as new when the old configuration is unwanted, the backup is unavailable, or you deliberately want to review every setting rather than carry it forward.
Troubleshooting the transfer
The pairing prompt does not appear
Unlock the iPhone, place it beside the SE 3, confirm Bluetooth is on, and open the Apple Watch app manually. Use the app’s add-watch or pairing flow if automatic detection does not start.

No previous watch backup is listed
Confirm that the old watch was paired with this iPhone and that its final backup completed. Update the iPhone and Apple Watch, then check the restore choices again. If the old iPhone is unavailable, follow the erase-and-pair process instead; a backup cannot be created after the old phone is gone.
Health or Activity records are missing
For iCloud transfers, check Health syncing and the Apple Account on the new iPhone. For computer transfers, confirm that the backup was encrypted. Remember that iCloud does not store Activity Sharing data, and records changed after the last watch backup may not be included.
The restore appears incomplete
Keep the watch near the iPhone and allow setup, software updates and synchronization to finish. Check the watch again after the iPhone has completed its own backup restoration. If the selected backup predates recent changes, those changes cannot be recreated by repeating the same restore.
The watch is still linked to the unavailable old iPhone
Erase the watch, pair it with the new iPhone and try the available backup. Without a backup, select set up as new; there is no watch-only method to retrieve changes that were never saved.
