The safest way to move data from an old Android phone to an OPPO Reno is to use OPPO Clone Phone. It can copy contacts, messages, call history, photos, videos, audio, documents, settings, apps and some app data directly between the phones, without erasing the old device. If the Reno has not been set up yet, Google’s Android setup wizard is an equally valid option and supports either a wireless transfer or a compatible USB-C data cable. Back up WhatsApp, Google Photos and Google contacts before you begin, then verify the Reno before you reset or sell the old phone.

Before you start: protect the data on the old phone

A phone-to-phone transfer is usually straightforward, but it is not a substitute for backups. Prepare both devices first so that an interrupted transfer does not become your only copy of important information.

Charge both phones and connect the old phone to Wi-Fi

Charge both phones to a comfortable level, ideally above 50 percent, and keep them near one another. Connect the old Android phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi is needed for backups and is also useful when the Reno must download Clone Phone or restore applications after the transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update the apps that contain important information

Install pending updates for WhatsApp, Google Photos, your contacts app and any other application whose data matters. Updates can improve the chance that the app’s own backup can be read on the Reno. Do not uninstall apps or clear their storage on the old phone until you have finished checking the new one.

Back up WhatsApp before moving anything

On the old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup. Choose the Google account you intend to use on the Reno, run Back up, and wait for the date and time of the latest backup to update. Include videos if they are important to you, remembering that they use considerably more storage. WhatsApp’s backup is separate from the general phone transfer, so do not assume that copying the WhatsApp app also copies every chat.

Confirm Google Photos and contacts are backed up

In Google Photos, open your account menu and check that Backup is complete. In the old phone’s account settings, confirm that Contacts synchronization is enabled for the Google account you will use on the Reno. Google’s Android guidance states that contacts synchronized to that account appear after you sign in on the new phone. Photos stored only in a local folder or on a removable card should also be copied through Clone Phone or another independent method.

Record information that cannot be copied automatically

Before starting, make a short list of accounts and security items that may require manual action:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Banking, payment, government and work apps that require a fresh device registration.
  • Two-factor authentication codes or an authenticator app that does not support cloud synchronization.
  • eSIM activation details and the SIM PIN, if applicable.
  • Passwords saved only inside the old phone rather than in a synchronized password manager.
  • Downloaded media protected by digital rights management (DRM).

Keep the old phone unlocked and available throughout the process. You may need it to approve logins or receive verification codes.

Method 1: transfer with OPPO Clone Phone

Clone Phone is OPPO’s primary device-to-device migration route. It works when the Reno is already set up and lets you choose categories rather than forcing a complete copy. OPPO’s Android instructions summarize the process as downloading Clone Phone on the old device and opening it on the new OPPO device. The exact menu names can differ slightly by Reno model and ColorOS release.

1. Open Clone Phone on the Reno

  1. On the Reno, open the app drawer or use Settings search to find Clone Phone.
  2. Open it and select the option describing the old device as Old phone, Old Android phone or Other Android Phone.
  3. Leave the pairing screen open. Depending on the ColorOS version, the Reno will display a QR code or instructions for connecting the old phone.

On some ColorOS 14.1 installations, the manual directs you to scan a QR code shown on the Reno. Scanning it can take the old phone to the correct Clone Phone download page.

2. Install and pair the old phone

  1. On the old Android phone, install OPPO Clone Phone from Google Play, or scan the QR code displayed by the Reno if that option is offered.
  2. Open Clone Phone on the old phone and choose that it is the source or old device.
  3. Allow the permissions the app requests. Depending on the Android version, these can include access to contacts, call logs, messages, photos, videos, files and nearby devices.
  4. When the Reno appears, confirm the pairing on both phones. If a code is shown, check that it matches before accepting.

Do not switch either phone to a different Wi-Fi network during pairing. Keep the screens awake if the transfer repeatedly pauses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Select the categories to copy

Clone Phone presents selectable data categories. The labels and availability vary by Reno model, source phone and ColorOS version, but OPPO documents the following types:

Category Typical contents Important qualification
Contacts Phone contacts and, where supported, contact details Cloud-synchronized Google contacts can also reappear after account sign-in.
Messages SMS and MMS stored on the old phone Some messaging services keep history on their own servers or inside their app.
Call logs Recent incoming, outgoing and missed calls The amount retained can depend on the source phone and Android version.
Photos and videos Camera files and other supported media folders Check local folders and removable-card content separately.
Music and audio Supported locally stored audio files Streaming downloads may be protected or require a fresh download.
Documents and files Supported files in storage Review Downloads, Documents and app-specific folders after copying.
System settings Settings that the Reno and source Android version can interpret Not every setting exists on both devices.
Installed apps and app data Apps available for installation and some transferable data Logins, protected data and operating-system-specific data may not move.

OPPO’s Play listing also identifies WeChat and QQ chat records in supported situations. Treat those as app-specific transfers rather than a guarantee for every account, region or app version.

4. Start the transfer and leave both phones alone

  1. Review the selected categories and the estimated amount of data.
  2. Tap Start, Transfer or the equivalent button on the Reno.
  3. Keep both phones close, unlocked and connected to power if the copy is large.
  4. Do not open other apps, disable Wi-Fi or restart either phone until Clone Phone reports completion.

The transfer is direct between the devices; it does not require you to erase the source phone. OPPO states that Clone Phone does not delete files on the old phone. However, it can overwrite apps and app data that already exist on the Reno. If the Reno contains anything valuable, back it up before starting or remove duplicate accounts and files first.

Method 2: use Google’s Android setup wizard

Google’s Copy apps & data flow is best when the Reno is still at first-time setup. Google says the cable and wireless options support the same categories of data; the difference is how the phones communicate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless setup

  1. Turn on the new Reno and follow the setup screens until you reach Copy apps & data.
  2. Choose the wireless option and sign in with the Google account used on the old phone when prompted.
  3. On the old phone, follow the approval prompt, scan the displayed pattern or QR code if requested, and confirm the connection.
  4. Review the data categories, select what you want, and start the copy.
  5. Keep both phones near each other and connected to power until setup finishes.

Wireless setup is convenient when you do not have a suitable cable. It can take longer for a large photo or video library, and the phones must remain close enough to maintain their temporary connection.

Wired setup with a USB-C data-transfer cable

  1. At Copy apps & data, choose the cable option.
  2. Connect the phones with a compatible USB-C data-transfer cable. A cable that only charges will not work.
  3. Unlock the old phone and approve the connection or choose the appropriate USB prompt.
  4. Follow the Reno’s on-screen instructions to select data and begin copying.
  5. Keep the cable connected until the setup wizard confirms completion.

A wired connection is the clearest physical option when the phones support compatible USB-C data transfer. If the old phone uses a different connector, you need a compatible adapter and a cable that carries data, not merely power.

When Google setup is unavailable

If you already completed the Reno’s initial setup, the setup wizard normally cannot be reopened without resetting the phone. Do not reset merely to gain access to the wizard unless you have backed up the Reno and are comfortable setting it up again. In that situation, Clone Phone is usually the less disruptive choice.

Move WhatsApp correctly

WhatsApp deserves its own procedure because chat history is restored from WhatsApp’s backup and account process. Moving the app icon or copying general app data does not guarantee that every conversation will appear.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  1. On the old phone, complete WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up.
  2. Confirm that the backup timestamp is current and that it uses the Google account you will sign in with on the Reno.
  3. Transfer the rest of your phone with Clone Phone or Google setup.
  4. Install or open WhatsApp on the Reno after the phone transfer.
  5. Verify the same phone number and sign in to the Google account containing the backup.
  6. When WhatsApp offers to restore the backup, accept it and leave the app open until messages and media finish restoring.

Google’s Android guidance says WhatsApp chats and data are restored from the cloud when you sign in on the new Android phone and open WhatsApp while a backup is available. If WhatsApp does not offer a restore, stop before creating a new empty backup on the Reno; check the phone number, Google account, backup timestamp and available storage on the old phone and in the account.

What transfers automatically—and what may need a separate process

No migration method can reproduce every detail of an Android phone because manufacturers, Android releases and app developers store data differently. Plan for a mixed result rather than assuming that a completed progress bar means every account is ready.

Data or service Most reliable route What to expect on the Reno
Google-synced contacts Sign in to the same Google account; Clone Phone is an additional option Contacts should synchronize after account setup.
Google Photos library Complete Google Photos backup, then sign in Cloud photos appear in Photos; local-only files still need device transfer.
SMS and call history Clone Phone or Google setup Supported records can copy, but retention and compatibility vary.
Camera photos and videos Clone Phone, Google Photos or a computer backup Check both the Photos app and local storage folders.
Installed apps Clone Phone or Google setup Compatible apps can be installed again; some require manual downloads.
App logins The app’s own sign-in and recovery process Expect to authenticate again, especially for banking and work apps.
Banking credentials and security keys Each provider’s device-transfer procedure Usually not copied for security reasons.
DRM-protected downloads Sign in to the service and download again Protected files may not be transferable as ordinary files.
Data held only inside an app That app’s export, backup or cloud restore Operating-system differences can prevent Clone Phone from moving it.

OPPO warns that some app data may not transfer because of operating-system differences, even when both devices run Android. Available categories also vary by ColorOS version and device. For anything irreplaceable, use the app’s documented export or cloud-backup function in addition to the phone-to-phone copy.

Cloud restore when the old phone is unavailable

If the old phone is lost, damaged or already wiped, a direct Clone Phone transfer is not possible. Recovery then depends on the backups you made before the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. During Reno setup, sign in with the Google account used on the old phone.
  2. Choose the available device backup when Android offers a restore.
  3. Open Google Photos and wait for the backed-up library to populate.
  4. Open Contacts and allow synchronization to complete.
  5. Install WhatsApp, verify the same phone number and accept the available cloud backup.
  6. Reinstall apps that are missing and use each app’s own recovery process.

A cloud restore cannot recover files that never reached a backup. Local-only photos, downloads, recordings and app databases may be permanently unavailable if the old phone cannot be accessed.

Verify the Reno before you erase the old phone

Use the following checklist while the old device is still intact:

  • Open Contacts and search for several names, including contacts with phone numbers, email addresses and labels.
  • Open Google Photos, check recent and older dates, and inspect albums that matter.
  • Open Messages and confirm that recent conversations and any required verification texts are present.
  • Review the call log and place a test call after inserting or activating the SIM.
  • Open Files and inspect Downloads, Documents, recordings and any folders used by your camera or work apps.
  • Open WhatsApp, check several recent chats, and open important media or documents.
  • Launch your most important apps and complete any required sign-in, device approval or security setup.
  • Check that the Reno has enough free storage for restored media and future updates.
  • Confirm that photos, contacts and WhatsApp show recent backup or synchronization times on the Reno.

Only after these checks should you factory-reset, trade in or give away the old phone. A successful transfer leaves the source files in place, so you have a recovery opportunity if a category was missed.

Troubleshooting common transfer problems

Clone Phone cannot find the other device

  • Confirm Clone Phone is open on both phones and that each phone is assigned the correct old/new role.
  • Turn off a VPN or aggressive battery-saving mode temporarily; these can interfere with local discovery.
  • Keep the phones close and accept every nearby-device, network and storage permission.
  • Restart both phones and repeat pairing from the Reno’s Clone Phone screen.
  • If the Reno shows a QR code, use that code to install the current Clone Phone version rather than downloading an unrelated transfer app.

The transfer stops or reports insufficient storage

  • Connect both phones to power and prevent the screens from locking.
  • Check the Reno’s free storage against the selected data size.
  • Run the transfer in smaller groups, such as contacts and messages first, then media and files.
  • Remove duplicate downloads or temporary files from the Reno before retrying.
  • For a very large media library, finish the essential categories first and use Google Photos or a computer copy for the remainder.

Apps appear, but their data or login is missing

This is usually a compatibility or security limitation rather than a failed transfer. Open the app’s own backup or restore settings, sign in again, and complete its device-registration process. Banking, workplace, authenticator and payment apps commonly require this step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WhatsApp offers no backup

  • Check that the Reno is signed in to the same Google account used for the old backup.
  • Verify the same phone number before accepting a restore.
  • On the old phone, confirm that WhatsApp’s backup timestamp is current and that the backup completed.
  • Make sure the Reno has enough storage and a stable Wi-Fi connection.
  • Do not create a new empty backup on the Reno until you have resolved the account or number mismatch.

The Reno is already set up and you want Google’s wizard

Google’s Copy apps & data flow is primarily a first-time setup feature. Rather than resetting the Reno and risking its current contents, use Clone Phone for the remaining categories. Reset only after backing up anything already stored on the Reno and understanding that a reset erases it.

The Reno is already configured OPPO Clone Phone It works after setup and offers broad category selection.
You are turning on the Reno for the first time Google Copy apps & data The setup wizard is built into Android and supports wireless or wired transfer.
You have a reliable compatible USB-C cable Google’s wired setup A direct cable connection avoids dependence on a temporary wireless link.
You do not have the old phone Google account, Photos and WhatsApp cloud restores Recovery depends on backups made before the old phone became unavailable.
You need maximum control over categories Clone Phone You can select contacts, files, media, settings, apps and other supported groups individually.

For most owners, the practical sequence is: back up the old phone, use Clone Phone, restore WhatsApp separately, sign in to Google services, and verify everything before wiping the source device. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a cable to transfer from an Android phone to an OPPO Reno?

No. Clone Phone and Google’s setup wizard can transfer wirelessly. If you prefer a wired method during first-time setup, use a compatible USB-C data-transfer cable; a charge-only cable will not work.

Will transferring data delete anything from my old phone?

OPPO says Clone Phone does not delete files on the source phone. Keep the old phone until you have checked the Reno, because the new phone can overwrite apps or app data already stored on it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I transfer WhatsApp chats and photos?

Yes, but use WhatsApp’s own Google-account backup and restore process for chats. Photos can come from Google Photos backup or a device transfer; local-only photos need to be copied from the old phone.

Why are some apps asking me to log in again?

Security-sensitive credentials and data tied to the old operating system often cannot be copied. Banking, work, payment and authenticator apps may require their own recovery or device-registration steps.

What if my OPPO Reno is already set up?

Use Clone Phone rather than resetting the Reno. Google’s Copy apps & data wizard is intended for first-time setup, while Clone Phone can be opened after setup.
