The safest way to move data to a Google Pixel 10 is to use the Pixel’s setup wizard while both phones are available. Back up the old Android phone, charge both devices, connect them by strong Wi-Fi or a USB-C data cable, pair them when the Pixel displays its QR-code instructions, and select the categories you want to copy. Pixel 10 supports both wireless and USB-C transfer. Because it is a Pixel 9-or-later model, it can also add data later through Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch if you finish setup first.
Keep a separate backup of important app data. Messages, photos, contacts, files, call history, WhatsApp chats, apps, settings and Wi-Fi details can usually be included, but manufacturer-specific app data, hidden files, some downloads and data from apps that do not use Android backup may not move automatically.
What to do before transferring anything
A transfer is easier to recover when the old phone still works. Complete these checks before turning on the Pixel 10’s copy process.
Back up the old Android phone
Run the old phone’s normal Google Account backup and let synchronization finish. Back up important information inside its own app as well. For example, if WhatsApp contains chats you cannot replace, use WhatsApp’s in-app chat-backup control instead of assuming the general Android backup contains every conversation.

Check any other app that stores data only locally, including authenticator, note-taking, recording, document, finance or health apps. Google warns that data held by apps made specifically for another manufacturer may not transfer. A separate export or cloud backup is the only dependable way to protect information those apps do not expose to Android backup.
Make accounts, passwords and passkeys available
Confirm that the Google Account used on the old phone is the one you intend to use on the Pixel 10. Sync apps with that account, and save passwords and passkeys so they can be available on the new device. If an app uses a non-Google account, verify that you know its sign-in details; non-Google accounts and their data are not guaranteed to be restored by a standard Android-to-Android copy.
Charge both phones and use a reliable connection
Charge the old phone and the Pixel 10 before starting. Keep them close together and connect both to strong Wi-Fi for a wireless transfer. If Wi-Fi is weak or unreliable, have a USB-C cable that supports data transfer, not merely charging. The cable must fit the old phone’s port and the Pixel 10’s USB-C port.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck storage on the Pixel 10
Estimate how much data is on the old phone and make sure the Pixel 10 has enough free space. Google notes that a transfer can pause when the destination phone runs out of storage. Delete unwanted videos, downloads or duplicate files on the old phone first if space is tight.

Prepare messages and SIM-stored texts
Update Google Messages on the old phone and make it the default messaging app before starting the Pixel transfer. If messages are stored on the old phone’s SIM rather than in its main storage, move them to main storage first so the transfer process can see them. Keep the old phone available until you have checked that recent conversations arrived.
Choose wireless or USB-C transfer
| Method | When it makes sense | What you need | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless | You want the simplest setup and both phones can maintain a strong Wi-Fi connection. | Both phones charged, near each other and connected as directed by the Pixel. | The Pixel detects the available connection and uses the supported transfer route. A weak connection can make the process slow or interrupt it. |
| USB-C cable | Wi-Fi is weak, congested or unreliable, or you prefer a wired connection. | A USB-C-to-USB-C cable that supports data and fits the old phone. | For Android-to-Pixel transfer, Google says a Quick Switch Adapter is not required when you use USB-C to USB-C. |
Pixel 8 and later phones support both wireless and cable transfer, so the Pixel 10 supports both. A cable is optional when wireless transfer works; it is not a requirement for setup.
Transfer data during Pixel 10 setup
Use this route when the Pixel 10 is new, has been reset, or has not completed its first-time setup.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn on the Pixel 10. Start the setup wizard and choose the option to copy data from a Pixel or Android device when it appears.
- Keep the old Android phone unlocked and nearby. Follow the Pixel’s pairing instructions. For Pixel 8 and later, Google describes using a setup notification and a QR code to connect the phones.
- Approve the connection. The Pixel may ask for the old phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern or password. Enter it on the old phone when prompted; this authorizes access to the selected data.
- Choose what to copy. Review the category list rather than accepting it blindly. Select the items you need, paying attention to the amount of photos, videos and files that will consume Pixel storage.
- Connect by the method you selected. Continue wirelessly, or connect the USB-C data cable when the Pixel asks for it. Do not substitute a charge-only cable.
- Leave both phones alone while copying runs. Keep them close, connected to power if necessary, and do not erase the old phone. The Pixel may continue downloading and installing apps after the main copy has completed.
- Complete mobile-network setup. Follow the Pixel and carrier prompts to install or transfer the SIM or eSIM. Cellular activation is separate from copying files and apps.
- Verify before wiping the old phone. Open recent conversations, contacts, photos, files and the apps that contain valuable data. Keep the old phone and its backup until those checks are complete.
What can transfer to the Pixel 10
Google’s Pixel transfer information identifies the following categories as available for Android-to-Pixel copying. Availability can depend on the old phone, the app used to hold the data and whether the item is synchronized.
Rank #3
- Move Files Fast: Transfer music, movies, or entire seasons of TV shows in seconds at 40 Gbps.
- HD Display: Connect your laptop to an external monitor to mirror or extend your screen in up to 8K@60Hz or 4K@144Hz.
- Huge Range of Power: Supports a maximum 240W charge when paired up with a compatible charger. Charge virtually any USB-C device from phones and accessories to laptops.
- Built to Last: Proven in lab tests to withstand up to 5,000 bends.
- What You Get: Anker 515 USB-C to USB-C Cable (USB4, 3.3ft), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
| Category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Google Accounts | Accounts selected during setup can be added to the Pixel 10. |
| Passwords and passkeys | These depend on the Google password or passkey service and synchronization being enabled. |
| Device settings | Supported settings can be copied, but the two phones may still expose different options or defaults. |
| Contacts | Contacts synchronized with Google are the most dependable. Contacts held only by a non-Google service may need that service’s own sync or export. |
| Calendar events | Events synchronized with Google can transfer. Non-Google calendars are not guaranteed by the standard Android copy. |
| Text messages and attachments | These can transfer when the old phone’s messages are accessible to the transfer process. Check SIM-stored messages and move them to main storage first. |
| Photos and videos | Selected media can be copied, subject to available Pixel storage. |
| Files and folders | Visible files may transfer, but downloads, hidden folders and unsupported locations may be excluded. |
| Wi-Fi details | Saved Wi-Fi login information can be included where supported. |
| Call history | Supported call records can be copied. |
| WhatsApp chat history | Chat history is listed as a transferable category, but keep WhatsApp’s own backup available as an additional safeguard. |
| Apps | Apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play can be downloaded to the Pixel. The app package and its data are not always the same thing. |
| MP3 and other audio files | Audio files in locations recognized by the transfer process can be copied. |
| Custom-photo wallpaper | A custom wallpaper based on a photo may transfer. |
Data that may not copy automatically
A completed transfer does not mean every byte of the old phone was cloned. Plan for these exceptions.
- Manufacturer-specific app data: Data stored inside an app made for another phone manufacturer may not be supported on the Pixel.
- Apps installed outside Google Play: Sideloaded or otherwise unsupported app packages may not be copied through the normal Android transfer.
- Downloads and hidden folders: PDFs and other downloads, along with files in hidden directories, may be omitted even when ordinary files transfer.
- Apps without Android backup: An app developer can choose not to participate in Android backup, leaving its local data behind.
- Non-Google accounts: Email, calendar, contacts and files belonging to another provider may require that provider’s app and synchronization.
- Non-Google-synchronized contacts and calendars: Records stored only on the old device or in an unsupported account may not appear on the Pixel.
- Recordings: Google’s Pixel transfer table says recordings do not transfer from another Android phone.
- Home-screen layout: The arrangement of the old Android phone’s home screen does not transfer.
- Notes and alarms: These depend on using Google apps; notes or alarms kept in another manufacturer’s app may be left behind.
For any irreplaceable item, use the original app’s export or backup function and retain the old phone until you have opened the copy on the Pixel 10.
Add data after setup with Android Switch
Pixel 9 and later models can add data after initial setup, so the Pixel 10 can use this route. It is useful when you skipped copying, received the old phone later, or want to bring over another supported category.

The same preparation rules still apply: keep both phones charged and nearby, use a strong connection or a USB-C data cable, and check available Pixel storage. Android Switch does not make unsupported app data transferable; it only gives you another opportunity to copy categories the phones can provide.

Restore from a Google Account backup when the old phone is gone
If the old Android phone is lost, damaged or already erased, a Google Account backup may still restore much of its supported content. During Pixel 10 setup, choose the option to restore from a previous device backup, sign in to the Google Account that contains the backup, select the relevant backup and choose the categories to restore.
Pixel 9 and later also document a post-setup restore path: open Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start, then follow the prompts to restore from the available cloud backup. Google’s cloud-restore instructions state that only one previous device can be restored this way. To restore a different previous device, the Pixel must be reset and the restore selected during setup.
Cloud restoration is limited to what the old phone actually backed up. It cannot recover data that was excluded from Android backup, stored only in a hidden folder, held by an unsupported app or never synchronized. Use each app’s own backup when the old phone is still available.
Troubleshoot common transfer problems
The Pixel cannot find the old phone
- Keep the phones close together and make sure both are unlocked.
- Confirm that both phones are following the Pixel’s pairing instructions and that the old phone has responded to the setup notification or QR-code flow.
- Switch to a USB-C-to-USB-C data cable if the wireless connection is weak.
The cable connects but no data is detected
Check that the cable supports data, not just charging, and that it fits the old phone securely. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable is the supported direct Android-to-Pixel option described by Google; an additional Quick Switch Adapter is not needed for that connection.

The transfer pauses or stops partway through
Check the Pixel 10’s free storage first. Google warns that a full destination can pause the process. Keep both phones powered and near each other, and retry with a cable if Wi-Fi is unstable. If the main copy completes but apps are still missing, allow time for Google Play to download and install them.
Messages are missing
On the old phone, update Google Messages and make it the default messaging app. Check whether some messages were stored on the SIM and move them to the phone’s main storage before trying again. Reopen several old and recent conversations on the Pixel rather than checking only the message count.
An app appears but its data is empty
The app itself may have been reinstalled without its private data. Sign in, check the app’s own backup or export, and contact the app’s developer if its data was not included in Android backup. Manufacturer-specific apps and apps that do not use Android backup are common causes.

Look in the old phone’s file manager for the original location. Downloads, hidden folders and recordings have special transfer limitations, so copy them separately to a computer, a supported cloud service or another storage location before erasing the old phone.
Verify the Pixel 10 before erasing the old phone
Use this checklist after setup or Android Switch finishes:
- Sign in to every important Google and non-Google account.
- Open recent text conversations and confirm attachments are present.
- Check contacts, calendar events, call history and Wi-Fi networks.
- Browse photos, videos, documents, downloads and music, including folders you use frequently.
- Open WhatsApp and verify the chats that matter.
- Launch finance, authentication, notes, health and work apps and confirm their records.
- Check that the SIM or eSIM is active and that calls and messages work through your carrier.
- Confirm that the Pixel has enough free storage after apps and media finish downloading.
- Keep the old phone and its backups until these checks pass.
Bottom line
Start the Pixel 10 transfer during setup whenever possible: back up the old Android phone, prepare passwords and app backups, use wireless or a USB-C data cable, and review the categories before copying. Pixel 10 supports both connection methods, does not need a Quick Switch Adapter for Android-to-Android USB-C transfer, and can add supported data later through Android Switch. Treat manufacturer-specific app data, recordings, hidden files, unsupported apps and non-Google accounts as separate migration tasks, and do not erase the old phone until the information you need is visible on the new one.
