The safest way to move data to a CMF by Nothing phone is to start the CMF’s initial setup, choose the Android data-copy option, and follow the prompts to connect your old phone. You can use a suitable cable or wireless transfer when the setup wizard offers it. Review the categories before copying, restore WhatsApp separately from its backup, and check the new phone before erasing the old one.
These instructions describe the general Nothing and Google Android transfer process. Exact labels, QR-code screens, and post-setup options can differ between CMF models and Android versions.
What to prepare before you start
Keep both phones available until you have checked the new CMF phone. The transfer normally begins during the new phone’s first-time setup, so preparing first prevents avoidable interruptions.

- Charge the old Android phone and the CMF phone. A large transfer can take from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on how much data is being moved.
- Make sure you know the old phone’s PIN, pattern, or password. You must be able to unlock it when the new phone asks for permission.
- Have the Google Account email address and password used on the old phone available. The account helps the new phone download apps and restore backed-up content.
Connect the new phone
Turn on Wi-Fi or mobile data on the CMF phone. A stable Wi-Fi connection is recommended, especially if you will use wireless transfer or need to download apps after copying. Insert the SIM during setup if the wizard asks you to do so, or follow the wizard’s instruction for doing it later.

Make a backup before switching
Google recommends backing up the old phone before moving to a new one. A backup gives you a fallback if the direct copy is interrupted or if the old phone becomes unavailable. It is also essential for app-specific data such as WhatsApp, which has its own backup and restore process.
Decide whether you can use a cable
A wired transfer requires a data cable that fits both phones. If the connectors differ, an adapter may be necessary. Do not buy a cable automatically: wireless transfer is an official alternative when the CMF setup wizard offers it.
Start the CMF phone’s Android setup
Transfer is normally initiated while the CMF phone is being set up for the first time. The wording can vary, but look for an option referring to copying apps and data, setting up with another device, or transferring data from an Android phone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Turn on the CMF phone. Choose your language and accept the initial setup prompts.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Complete the network step so the phone can authenticate your Google Account and download apps.
- Choose the Android transfer option. When the wizard asks whether you want to copy apps and data or use another device, select the option for an Android phone.
- Prepare the old phone when prompted. Unlock it and approve any connection or permission request. Some versions of the Nothing instructions show a QR code to scan; others use a direct cable connection.
- Sign in to your Google Account. Use the account associated with the old phone when the CMF phone requests it. The account is used for app downloads and eligible backed-up content.
If you have already completed setup, the phone may show a “Finish setting up” or copy-data path, but that option is not present in exactly the same place on every CMF model or Android version. When it is absent, restoring from a Google Account backup may be the practical alternative.

Choose wired or wireless transfer
The two direct-device methods follow the same basic flow: connect the phones, authorize the old phone, select data, and wait for copying to finish. Google’s Android Help describes the relationship plainly: “Both methods support the same data.” The choice is mainly about the equipment you have and the connection experience offered by your particular CMF setup screen.
| Method | What you need | Advantages | Limitations and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired | A compatible data cable for both phones; an adapter may be required when the ports differ. | Provides a direct physical connection and avoids relying on a wireless pairing step. | The cable must fit both phones and support data, not only charging. Approve the connection on the old phone. |
| Wireless | Both phones powered on, unlocked when requested, and connected according to the CMF wizard’s pairing instructions. | No additional cable or adapter is needed when the option is available. | The exact pairing screens vary by model and Android version. Follow the prompts on both phones and keep them near each other while they work. |
| Google backup restore | An existing Google Account backup and access to that account. | Useful when the old phone is missing, damaged, or no longer available for direct copying. | This is a backup-based recovery path, not a live phone-to-phone clone. What comes back depends on what was backed up and on Android-version compatibility. |
For a wired copy
- Connect the old Android phone and the CMF phone with the cable supplied by the setup process or another compatible data cable.
- If the ports do not match, connect an appropriate adapter between the cable and one phone.
- Unlock the old phone and approve the connection or any “trust” or permission request it displays.
- Return to the CMF screen and continue to the data-selection page.
If the CMF phone does not recognize the connection, disconnect and reconnect both ends while the old phone is unlocked. Try another known data-capable cable if one is available; a charge-only cable cannot carry the transfer.
For a wireless copy
- Select the wireless option when the CMF setup wizard presents wired and wireless choices.
- Follow the pairing instructions shown on the CMF phone and then on the old Android phone.
- Keep both phones powered on and nearby until the wizard reports that copying has finished.
Do not switch to a cable simply because the screens look different from a guide for another Android model. Google and Nothing both note that the exact steps can vary by device and Android version.
Review what will be copied
Before pressing the final Copy button, inspect the categories selected by the wizard. You can deselect categories you do not want on the CMF phone. More importantly, the standard Android copy process is not a guaranteed clone of every account, app database, setting, or media file.

| Category | What the general guidance says | What to check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Text messages | Nothing’s general Android-to-Nothing instructions include texts in a cable transfer. | Open the messaging app on the CMF phone and check recent and older conversations. |
| Photos and videos | Videos are included in Nothing’s listed transfer categories. | Open the photo or gallery app and spot-check recent and older media. |
| Contacts and calendar | Nothing lists contacts and calendar content among transferable items. | Confirm that the expected account is visible and that entries are present. Contacts or calendars synchronized through a non-Google service may not be copied by the standard Google flow. |
| Music | Music is included in Nothing’s general cable-transfer description. | Check the destination app or storage location used by your music files. |
| Apps | The Google Account can help download apps. Apps that do not transfer can be downloaded from Google Play. | Open the app list and identify anything missing. An app download does not guarantee that its internal data was restored. |
| App data | Google warns that apps that do not use Android backup may not bring their data across. | Open important apps and verify their content. Some may require their own sign-in, export, or restore procedure. |
| Accounts and synchronized data | Data for accounts other than Google Accounts may not be included. Contacts and calendars synchronized to other services may also be omitted. | Add or sign in to those services separately and confirm synchronization. |
| Ringtones and some settings | Google lists ringtones and some phone settings among items that may not copy automatically. | Set the ringtone and review important preferences manually after transfer. |
Use the selection screen as a decision point rather than accepting every category without checking. If a category is not important to you, deselecting it can shorten the process; if it is important, plan a separate verification step.
Transfer WhatsApp chats separately
WhatsApp should not be treated as a guaranteed part of the general phone copy. Google’s Android guidance says WhatsApp chats and data are restored from the cloud after you sign in to the new Android phone and open WhatsApp, but the old phone must have WhatsApp backups enabled first.
- On the old Android phone, open WhatsApp and turn on its chat backup feature before starting the switch.
- Allow the backup to complete while the old phone is connected to a reliable network.
- Finish the CMF phone’s setup and sign in with the account and phone number associated with the WhatsApp backup.
- Install or open WhatsApp on the CMF phone.
- When WhatsApp offers to restore the backup, follow its prompts and wait for the restore to finish before judging the chat history.
The phone-to-phone copy can move other categories while WhatsApp handles its own cloud restore. If WhatsApp does not offer the expected backup, check that the old-phone backup completed and that the same account and phone number are being used.
How long the transfer takes
Nothing’s support guidance gives a practical range of a few minutes to over an hour, depending on the volume of data. A phone with a small number of contacts and apps may finish quickly; a phone containing many videos and other large files can take substantially longer.

Verify the CMF phone before erasing the old one
Google advises clearing the old device only after confirming that the data copied. Verification is the point at which you discover omissions while the source phone is still available.
- Open the messaging app and inspect several conversations, including older messages.
- Open the contacts and calendar apps and check entries that matter to you.
- Browse photos and videos from different dates, not just the newest item.
- Review the installed-app list and download missing apps from Google Play when necessary.
- Open important apps to determine whether their internal data is present or whether they require a separate restore.
- Restore WhatsApp and confirm that the expected chats are visible.
- Check any non-Google account, contact source, or calendar service you used on the old phone.
- Review ringtones and key phone settings that Google identifies as possible exclusions.
Keep the old phone intact until these checks are complete. If something is missing, you can repeat the relevant backup or sign in to the original service while you still have access to it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the old Android phone is unavailable
When direct phone-to-phone transfer is impossible, use a Google Account backup during the CMF phone’s setup if one exists and you can access the account. The backup and restore behavior depends on the phone and Android version, so the available screens may not match a particular online guide.
Android-version compatibility
A backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older Android version. If the CMF phone is running an older version than the phone that created the backup, the result can be incomplete. Install available system updates before restoring when the setup process offers them, but do not assume that every model exposes the same update or restore sequence.

What a backup cannot guarantee
A Google backup is limited to what was actually backed up. It does not automatically recover data from apps that do not use Android backup, accounts outside Google, non-Google contact and calendar services, ringtones, or every phone setting. WhatsApp still requires its own backup and restore flow.
If you skipped transfer during setup
Look in the CMF phone’s setup-related prompts for a “Finish setting up” or copy-data option. Some devices expose a post-setup path and others do not. If the option is missing, use the Google Account backup restore route where the phone provides it, or sign in to individual services and download missing apps manually.
Avoid factory-resetting the CMF phone merely because a particular menu label is absent. First check the phone’s current setup prompts and confirm whether your model supports post-setup copying. The exact path is model- and version-dependent.
Troubleshooting common transfer problems
The transfer prompt never appears
- Confirm that you are still in the CMF phone’s initial setup flow and have selected the option referring to another device or copying apps and data.
- Unlock the old phone and keep it nearby.
- Check that the CMF phone has a Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection and that the old phone can be unlocked with its PIN, pattern, or password.
- If setup has already been completed, look for a device-specific “Finish setting up” path or restore from a Google Account backup.
The cable connection fails
- Make sure the cable fits both phones and supports data transfer.
- Use an adapter if the connectors differ.
- Reconnect with the old phone unlocked and approve its permission request.
- If the connection still fails, select wireless transfer if the CMF wizard offers it.
Some apps or data are missing
- Check whether the missing item belongs to a non-Google account or a service that does not use Android backup.
- Download missing apps from Google Play.
- Open the app’s own settings for an export, backup, or restore option.
- For WhatsApp, confirm that the old phone’s WhatsApp backup completed and repeat the cloud restore on the CMF phone.
The copy is taking a long time
Large collections of photos, videos, and app content can make the process last more than an hour. Keep both phones powered and connected, and wait for the completion message. Interrupting the process can leave you with less data than repeating it carefully.
When it is safe to wipe the old phone
Only erase or give away the old Android phone after the CMF phone contains the information you need and app-specific restores are complete. Confirm the categories that matter most, verify WhatsApp independently, and check any non-Google services before clearing the old device. This final check protects you from treating a partial transfer as a complete one.
The Bottom Line
Start the CMF phone’s setup with both phones charged and the old phone unlocked, use wired or wireless copying as offered, review every category, restore WhatsApp separately, and erase the old phone only after verification.
